INCREDIBLE!
My 8-year-old grandson's eyes popped when he saw this book.The images really jump out of the page at you, which is to be expected in a 3-D book.On top of that, there are a number of fascinating sports action shots.One in particular of a rock climber is just amazing.If your children love sports, buy this book.(The only downside is it comes with only 1 pair of 3-D glasses, so be prepared to have siblings fighting over who gets to use them!

Not just for kids - WOW!10 STARS!
Over the past few years, I have gotten into 3D photography. It is only recently I have decided to buy some books showcasing 3D photography.I've bought maybe a dozen, and I must say this book is INCREDIBLE.

I am far from being a kid - I enjoyed this book thoroughly.The photos presented are just fantastic.David Klutho is an amazing 3D photographer.I'm not into sports much, but this book is very entertaining.The photo I like best is the one with the all of the sports gear - baseball, hockey puck, etc - which is laid flat and viewed from an angle - the object appear like a real baseball, hockey puck, etc - which you can reach down and pick up - this is a very neat trick. (they are called Phantograms - which is any 3D photo that appears to pop right off of the page)

There's a lot of "out-of-window" action going on in the book, which is really nice.Anaglyphs, by their very nature are known for muted colors and ghosting of images in each eye.These photos can be viewed very nicely with not much of either - the author really knows how to shoot photos for anaglyph - something I am not good at (yet).

The author is well aware of the rules of sterecopy, or stereographic photography, and it shows in every photo shown in this book.I find myself viewing these images again and again.

I would recommend this book to anyone who want's to see photographs in a way they have never seen them before.

I'd give the book 10 starts if I could.

Stunning 3D
This book is stunning in its 3D photography - one of the best analglyph (red/blue) books I have ever seen. The price is right from this vendor - bought 2 so far will buy another soon. If I have one very minor criticism, it is that there is some ghosting with the cyan lens of the right side. Maybe if the cyan lens were slightly darker it might help. That's why I keep a pair of red/blue glasses with me as well. Most of the pictures are excellent. Make sure that you have a lot of light to view the pictures esp. sunlight. Analglyphs need much light. Also make sure that the light enters from the top of the book - not the sides - you'll get glare from side lighting. I like to place the book near a sunny window. Get yourself a copy - one for your kids. It is truly a spectacular book. 3D photog. is a hobby (one of many) of mine. Hopefully you got yourself the Sports Illustrated 3D issues. No 3-D effect!
The book has printed with poor quality. Or the glasses inside doesn't have the right lenses: 3D effect is not good, with a lot of ghosting effect.

eye-poppin 3-D pets
I pd for this book over a month ago and have not rec'd it. In all the yers I've ordered books from Amazon this is a first, very disappointed as this was one of my grandsons B'day presents.

Authors and publishers are so clever these days about finding great new ways to get kids interested in reading. Talk about making a book truly interactive! This one comes with two pairs of 3-D glasses neatly tucked in a pocket on the inside cover. Don't lose them - you'll need these wild glasses to make the animals leap right off the pages.

Phantograms are a form of an optical illusion. The illusion of depth is produced with a combination of two images that appear smudged (or as this book calls it, "a blurry mess") to the naked eye. Once you don the special specs however, the color filtering power of the glasses makes the image appear to be three dimensional! To kids, this bit of science translates to be really, really cool.

Not just a barrage of fancy photos, this book is also chock full of valuable information for exactly twenty-eight types of pets. A full page of information is provided on each animal, including instructions on how to care for that pet, habits, temperaments and helpful hints. You actually get a sense of what it would be like to own each animal - before you really do own that animal.

Of course, the big hook here is the 3D glasses and really neat rise-from-the-pages animals. But this is also a great resource when your family just isn't sure which pet would be the best fit for your household. Thinking about getting a potbellied pig? Maybe you didn't know that they are easy to train and can be taught lots of fun tricks. Or is a leopard gecko more your speed? Be careful not to grab that little guy by the tail, as it will break right off. Read about those animals, plus Guinea pigs, ferrets, frogs, parrots, tarantulas and more.

Overall, this is a wonderful book on household animals that will capture (and hold) the attention of children of many ages. 50 years of 3D cinema knowledge in their own words
As this book consists of a collection of conversations of noted people in the field of 3D Cinema with the author, I began reading with a fear that I was about to read slap-on-the-back style accolades to and from some of the past directors of notorious 3D "B" movies from the 1950s. I was quickly wrong and as they say in the classics, I couldn't put it down.
Having seen some recent IMAX 3D films that were very impressive, and with the promise of new autostereoscopic screens on the horizon (televisions that don't require any eyewear for the 3D experience), I wanted to learn more about this field of filmmaking. There are few good publications on this subject currently so this purchase was a punt.
Ray Zone has put together insightful discussions covering fifty years of directors, cinematographers, and techs, from directors of the cheesy red and green glasses 3D horror flicks of the 50s/60s, to the producers of some of the better of the IMAX 3D productions. These interviews show a clear sense of the limitations and the potential of the 3D medium through each individual's experience - even James Cameron shows an impressive knowledge and enthusiasm for 3D from his 3D work (although his interview here appears to have been made prior to his much anticipated 3D drama "Avatar", due for release late 2009).
The "level" of the knowledge expected of the reader is of someone who has a good understanding of the filmmaking process, especially photography, so is not really for the hobbyist, although the chatty nature of the conversations makes this an easy read.
The tacky front cover image of this book belies the knowledge within, I guess giving an understandable nod to the cheese factor of the 50s era 3D films. Pity this book doesn't come with a DVD in the back and some red/green glasses so I could combine the discussions with the examples cited. As a sign of the infectious nature of it's contents, after reading this book I immediately bought three 3D movies on Blu-ray from Amazon so I could put some of the espoused theories of 3D from these filmmakers to test (without actually trying to shoot a 3D movie myself yet). My learning curve is steep and I can't wait to see what comes next.
Any filmmaker who is thinking of entering the brave new (old) world of 3D cinema should read this book. It is great for insights into the technical, historical, cinematographical, and business side of 3D Cinema, and is a good primer for the future creators of 3D.

The best 3D Civil War photo presentation ever produced
As good as were Bob Zeller's previous 3D books, this one is a giant step forward. The anaglyph (red/green) presentation is far more accessible and John Richter's unparalleled digital restorations make these photos clearer than any Civil War images presented to the public--even including the original stereoviews issued during and after the war.

The text flows through the era and highlights not only Abraham Lincoln, but key the places and characters associated with him. The images conspire with the text to bring all these to life. Lastly, Kate Chase has never looked so beautiful as when she leaps off of page 87--her innocent, young face belying her calculating charm and political savvy.

A great book, beautifully designed and affordable, too.

Total Disappointment
Ipre-ordered this book and could not wait until it shipped. I should have waited. Very,very few 3-d photos of Lincoln.While mildly interesting with other 3-d Civil War scenes, the title would leave you to believe it was heavily illustrated with 3-d Lincoln photos. It is not. With so many stereo photos of Lincoln available, why were they not used?? I urge you to save the purchase price of this book.My copy is heading to the first garage sale I give. Sorry guys, but y'all really dropped the ball on this one.

A Lesson From a Master
I am a 79 year old retired photographer.I have been involved in three dimensional photography since 1952.In that time I have taken several thousand stereo slides, but in no way do I equal the stereoscopic accomplishments of Harold Lloyd.The man was one of my idols not only because of his achievments in stereography, but because of his abilities as a consummate performer in motion pictures.

This book is meaningless to the one eyed mind.Those whose satisfaction is gratified by a one eyed picture of reality are now being slowly awakened to the fact that we see in three dimensions, something some of us have been aware of for the past fifty-six years . . . and, much longer.Because of new technology and the public's realization that we see in 3D(how long did that take to come about?) stereoscopy will finally come into it's own.

This book is one of my Bibles and I think that when people realize what they are seeing out of BOTH eyes, they will embrace, enjoy and cherish this volume as much as I do.

A great history of stereoscopic photography
This book is a fantastic resource for those interested in the history of stereo photography during the Civil War. The author focuses more on the stereo aspects of the war than on the war itself which is good because unlike the war in general, there is little written about stereo photography during this time. Many of the stereo images presented are very rare and some have never been published before this printing. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in stereo photography or lesser known aspects of this time period but those looking for another general book on the civil war may not find what they are looking for in this book.

OK.I really like the 3-D effect!
I've got The Civil War In Depth and The Civil War Collection, so I've got my Bob Zeller itch sated.I enjoyed the stereoscopic photos in both I and II, but you know what?Once the novelty of viewing Civil War photos in stereo wears off, you're left with two books that are more or less devoted to one little niche of Civil War historiana and a hand full of images to view.For a pretty hefty price tag, too.

I'm not into collecting Civil War stereophotographs.I like looking at them and am mildly interested in viewing the photos for their own merits as windows onto the greatest struggle the US has ever been through.But I don't have the passion for collecting them, and I'm not really interested in Civil War photographers; I've always been thrilled by the image of Pickett's charge, or of the assault on the stone wall at the base or Marie's Heights.I wish The Civil War In Depth II had more photos, more depth, and less focus on photography and photographers.I cruised throught he book and thought, "That's it?"

A small peak through a time machine
"The Civil War in Depth, Volume II" is Bob Zeller's followup to his first book of Civil War stereo photographs, published three years ago. As he explains in the foreward, Zeller had not intended to do a sequel, even though there had been some outstanding stereo views he had not been able to include in the first volume. Less than two years ago, however, he was granted access to a phenomenal collection of Civil War stereo photos compiled by Robin Stanford, an amateur historian (and that is "amateur" in all the best senses). Photos from Ms. Stanford's collection provide nearly half the images in the present volume.

In this book we see in three-dimensions battlefields and campgrounds, generals and private soldiers, the living and the dead, great cities and slave plantations. Viewing these images is like being granted a small peak through a time machine. They give an unmatched immediacy to the Civil War and the people who lived through it -- or died in its battles. The photographs of the dead (some familiar from their usual "mono" reproductions) are especially powerful, the reality of battlefield death driven home when you for the first time see the soldiers' bodies seemingly at your feet.

Stereophotography of the Civil War
This book in an excellant introduction to Civil War stereophotography. The pictures are wonderfully composed and provide insight into the war. There is a good foundation placed and a simple history written.

History in 3-D
"Civil War in Depth" is a fascinating piece of work.The stereoscopic photographs literally jump off the page when viewed properly with the enclosed 3-D viewer.Many of these views were previouslypublished using only one side.Thus the true look and clarity of detailwas lost, but within these pages the pictures come back to life!

Inspeaking with Mr. Zeller at Chambersfest 99' in Chambersburg, PA, I foundmany of these views were never seen until most recently; with several moreunseen views recently surfacing after publication.If the opportunity everpresents itself, by all means, see his slide presentation based upon hisresearch.

Many thanks to Bob Zeller for the excellent work and detailthat went into this publication and I hope to see more newly discoveredviews in a possible up and coming book.

Very enjoyable and informative book
After a recommendation from a 3D enthusiast friend, I got a copy of this excellent book in order to share the pictures on a 3D Forum I'm in.The photos are great, but every one of them needed enhancing to bring out better dimensional qualities.You can view nearly every image in my Flickr photoset here (I did not put up the comic pages): [...].As for the information shared within the book, it is highly engaging and entertaining.The author takes you from the beginning of stereographic photography (covering all the different kinds of viewers and cameras that came out) up to the five year craze from 1950 to 1955 that included movies, comics, magazine ads, etc., then the decline after that, followed by the slight rise in popularity in the 70s and early 80s.Due to the book coming out in 1983, it doesn't cover a lot of the 3D movies that came out during that era, only gives details about various upcoming films.On the whole, this is a must-have book for any 3D fan.

An excellent introduction to 3-D in various media.
When I had formed an interest in 3-D, I was looking for a book with coverage of 3-D movies. A friend of mine, who was a flea market dealer had a copy of 'Amazing 3-D' and traded it to me. What impressed me about this book was that the coverage was much more than 3-D movies. It includes chapters on stereo photography, 3-D comics, and a good general history of 3-D. This book was published in 1982 and is still considered by many 3-D enthusiasts to be the best general introduction to 3-D and reference to 3-D in comics and movies. The 3-D boom of the early eighties was kicked off by the 1981 movie "Comin' at Ya in 3-D". Dan Symmes, co-author of 'Amazing 3-D', was critical of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" calling it 'bad 3-D'. Of course those of us who saw and thoroughly enjoyed "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" were unaware that we were enjoying 'bad 3-D'. Frankly, it was an egotistical remark from someone who failed to realize that if it had not been for "Comin' at Ya in 3-D", this book would never had been published. It was then that the so-called 3-D experts proceeded to make their own 'good 3-D' movies and frankly bored the hell out of their audience thus killing interest in 3-D movies by the end of 1983. Symmes developed his own 3-D movie camera system which he called 'Dimension 3'. The subsequent company Dimension 3 converted polarized 3-D films to anaglyph 3-D (red/blue) for television broadcast and were also responsible for the conversion of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" to anaglyph for the DVD release. Their conversion process is also known as 'horrible 3-D' although they will tell you they are the only ones who know how to do 3-D right. Despite Symmes ego, he is one of the foremost experts in 3-D and sharing his knowledge of the subject certainly is a treat for anybody who is interested in 3-D in any of its various applications. thought it'd be fun, but...
This book just wasn't there for me.The 3-D effect really doesn't work very well at all and the photographs are pretty sub par.If you want a good physique book I'd go for something by Bruce of LA or Champion.It's a fun concept, but just falls short.

Nice idea with some disappointments
This is a cool book with some incredibly nice photographs done in an amazing technology that should have been perfected by now and utilized in every medium instead of having been almost abandoned.Many of the photographs are nicely erotic and well done.

However, I was disappointed that almost every truly erotic photo, especially those depicting erect penises or sex acts, had no companion photo and therefore no 3-D effect.I was also disappointed that the publisher didn't have the good sense to make the wire binding large enough to accomodate the number of pages in the book so you could easily turn the pages without damaging them.

All in all, a nice addition to my library, but don't expect hot porn. Most of the photos are very 'soft' but nicely staged.

A treat from the past for the non-Playstation generation...
Over the years there have been some true pioneers in the art of male erotica and Denny Denfield rates highly amongst them!As the result of a bequest of numerous Athletic Model Guild publications and photos, see The Complete Reprint of Physique Pictorial: 1951-1990 (Photo & Sexy Books) in the early 1990s, I became interested in the origins of male erotica.

That, combined with my interest in photographic effects, such as 3D, inspired me to purchase this book.Thanks to David Chapman and the 3D-impaired Thomas Waugh for collating such an O-U-T-standing volume.

I only hope that some of the current generation of gay males - most of whom have no knowledge of significant events like Stonewall (1969) or the first Sydney Gay Mardi Gras (1978) - will chance upon this presentation of even earlier (1950s & 60s) gay male forays into the expression of sexuality.

Although more explicit than most of the tame (by current standards) Physique Pictorial and Athletic Model Guild (Bob Mizer: Athletic Model Guild publications (AMG): American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970, Vol. 7 (American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970)) this is an excellent collection of some of the earliest representations of the male nude as a sexual identity!

Although aimed at a specific audience, combined with the added excitement of 3D, I highly recommend this book for both the more mature and Playstation Generation X and Y gay males!!!

if you're shopping for porn this aint falcon...
...it is, however; nostalgic, titillating, risque, kitsch, 50's and early 60's style physique photo worship fun with some (almost) soft porn (think what you'd see in a playguy or blue) content. it's great parlor table partyfun and a perfect gift for those gays and single women (and perhaps a few married ones as well) that you're having difficulty finding the right gift for. if you love hard-core mapplethorpe you will be bored to tears. i found it charming. it is very saddening when you think of all the photos by mr. denfield that were destroyed over time. how fortunate to have the likes of david chapman and thomas waugh out there preserving this photographic past for the future. hopefully others will join in this preservation of gay art. ... One Stop Shopping
OK, you've purchased a DSLR and either Photoshop CS3 or Elements. Now you want to know how you can best use your new camera to capture the best images you can, so that when you get them into Photoshop you'll be able to process them to their fullest potential and really get some impressive images, much better than the point n shoot crowd.
