This volume had its origin in a symposium on theReproduction and Development of Cartilaginous Fishes thatwas held at the annual meetings of the American Elasmobranch Societyand the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists inCharleston, South Carolina in 1990. The cartilaginous fishes, classChondrichthyes, are a large and diverse group of fishes that includeapproximately 900 to 1100 living species of sharks, skates, rays andratfishes. Throughout their history, which dates back at least 400million years, they have been a successful major component of themarine ecosystem. The chondrichthyan fishes occupy a pivotal positionin comparative and evolutionary studies of vertebrate reproduction anddevelopment. They are the oldest surviving group of jawed vertebratesand they possess both the adult vertebrate Bauplan and the vertebrateprogram of embryonic development. The major features of the femalereproductive system, including its embryonic origin, structure,physiological function, and biochemistry, apparently were establishedearly in vertebrate evolution and are fully developed inchondrichthyan fishes. These features of the female reproductivesystem have been retained during the evolution of the other classes ofvertebrates. Much the same can be said for the male reproductivesystem. Moreover, viviparity, placental nourishment of developingembryos, and the hormonal regulation of these events made an initialappearance in this group. The 22 articles presented in this volumebring together a wide variety of complementary research byinvestigators from seven countries, allowing us to broaden the scopeand implications of our studies while identifying opportunities forfuture research. The appearance of a volume on the reproduction anddevelopment of cartilaginous fishes is quite opportune. The continuedexistence of these fishes, which survived the great extinction eventsof Earth's history, is now threatened by overexploitation unlessimmediate steps for their conservation are undertaken. A mothis an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. The differences between butterflies and moths are more than just taxonomy. Sometimes the names "Rhopalocera" (butterflies) and "Heterocera" (moths) are used to formalize the popular distinction. Many attempts have been made to subdivide the Lepidoptera into groups such as the Microlepidoptera and Macrolepidoptera, Frenatae and Jugatae, or Monotrysia and Ditrysia. Failure of these names to persist in modern classifications is because none of them represents a pair of "monophyletic groups". The reality is that butterflies are a small group that arose from within the "moths" and there is thus no way to group all of the remaining taxa in a monophyletic group, as it will always exclude that one descendant lineage. There are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth, with thousands of species yet to be described.
