AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS
This is a hefty book that is packed with information about the overall telecommunications industry and technology. In 594 pages, including the index, it covers everything from the basic concepts of analog and digital signals all the way to WI-FI, Wireless Broadband, Sensor Networks, and Personal Area Networks. The book is broken down into four major parts that include: Fundamentals and Voice Over IP. Industry Overview and Public Networks, Advanced Technologies, Cable TV Networks, and the Internet and, finally, Wireless Service. It also includes a well thought out Table of Contents to organize the overwhelming mass of all that technical information with second and third level headings that facilitate access to the material, as well as a useful Glossary of the major terms and concepts. For instance, the following are two examples right from the glossary. Number One. 802:11 "A set of IEEE standards for local area networks. 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g are the most common ones and are used in homes to share Internet access, in enterprises, and in hot spots." Number Two. CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) "A competitor to local telephone companies that has been granted permission by the state regulatory commission to offer local telephone service. CLECs compete with the incumbent telephone company. CLECs are also simply called local telephone companies." Of course, there are many, many additional entries that help to clear up the meaning of the hundreds of terms and phrases encountered in this voluminous book.

I liked the book. However, it does contain a mountain of telecommunications concepts and information, sometimes overwhelming, and the material is presented in a sort of encyclopedic way, one subject after the next in short bursts of explanations. So, by the time you get through with the 550 pages, you will definitely have a good introduction to the overall subject. But be advised, that if you aren't familiar with telecommunications, (if you know zero, then I suggest you read a simpler book first) it' s not only a huge field of technology; it's also extremely complicated. This is not an over night read. In fact, because of the sheer volume of information presented in this book you may have to read it more than once in order to get a real hold of the subject matter. Some of the stuff will definitely make you dose off, while other parts will grip your interest. I managed to read it twice, and I still felt like crying.

Now for all of you out there who have an interest in the topic of "mergers and acquisitions," especially as it relates to the telecommunications industry, this book should definitely appeal to you. Because it contains a multitude of examples of how the industry has grown and changed throughout the years. You'll l be able to trace the major players from their meager beginnings throughout all the ventures, combinations, mergers and out and out takeovers that are part and parcel of this complex industry. And no matter which way you cut it, this is a fascinating topic.

All in all, I give this book a high recommendation.

Good book, easy to read
I'm pleasantly surprised by this book.It is very easy to read, and flows quite nicely for someone who is just being introduced to telecomm.

Horrible
This is the worst book I have ever had to read. There are no chapter sumaries. The logic flow within chapters seems random. Complicated terms or concepts are referenced but not explained until much later, sometimes in another chapter. Much of the information is wrong. In certain sections of the book, spaces have been omitted. Thisisveryhardtoread. This book confusses more than it clarifies. Run away, take another class. Don't buy this book

Baaad to the Binding
This book may seem like a great intro book to those well-versed in Telecommunications. However, the book does a terrible job of explaining terms and jargon. A word, for example, will be used for several pages before being defined. There are very few practical examples and metaphors to illustrate concepts and add interest to the book. There are no photographs here either, only basic illustrations which do not clarify concepts, but instead require explaination.

All of my classmates are disgusted that we are required to use this text. Plans are being set for a post-semester Essential-Guide-to-Telecommunications bonfire!

Telecom with great industry overview
This third edition was basically written by mid-2001, in the shakeout of the dotcoms. In spite of the intervening period of almost 4 years, the book feels relatively up-to-date on the technical side although the recent mergers in the telecom industry might need to be addressed by the author.

The book, as stated by the author, is intended to clarify technologies, trends, and history in the telecom industry. Although it provides an overview of tech, that is not is its strength; placing the terminology in the context of the structure and the history of the telecom industry is. The book is not meant for IT specialists but people like myself that need to know enough about hardware, protocols, and systems to ensure clear communication about the telecom needs of the enterprise.

Although the book is not as technical as some might like, I felt the author did a thorough job covering the structure of telecom industry and the impact of the regulatory environment, not just in the developed countries but the emerging markets of the global marketplace also. The international background, histories, mergers and aquisitions help provide a context.

Interestingly, Dodds foresaw the importance of VoIP internationally as well as the fixed wireless leap for emerging markets. Those topics remain on the front burner. All in all, this is great book to start with. It explains all the key technologies with adequate detail while exploring options for SMBs with significant trends placed in a historical and regulatory context. Sample is not formatting correctly.
It is concerning that even after downloading the sample again and restarting the Kindle this sample book is not formatting correctly.The text runs off the bottom of the page no matter what font size is utilized.If the text to speech function is used there is audio that one cannot see.No other samples or books that I have fail this way.

Not good
I'm still waiting this book. I bought this book more than one month ago. The answer that I got when i was asking about the book was "Wait until next month and let us know if you don't receive..."

Is a shame, but I have to say that i won't buy again on amazon...

Total Telecom Immersion
This was my telecom textbook, and I literally pored over it. What a thorough resource. It is clear the whole time you read it that the author is enthralled with the scientific concepts underlying the means of intelligent communications. It can overwhelm you from time to time, but it's not for lack of clarity -- and whenever you're ready to re-immerse yourself in more information, the book is there for you.

Telcoms Essentials
This is homework, but it is also pretty interesting. Sometimes it lacks sufficient technical details for my liking, and it can also read like a marketing document at times, but it still continues clear explanations of all the important concepts. A major failing is the lack of consistent notes for acronyms - sometimes they are explained, often not, and so a lot of time is wasted re-looking them up.

A Little Out of Date and Hard to Read. Better Choices are Available.
CONS

1. It is out of date. I purchased the 25th edition, copyrighted 2009, and some of the entries apparently haven't updated since the mid-1990s. HTML 4 (published in December, 1997) is not covered, although HTML 3.2 is. Other entries, such as "DOCSIS 2.0" read as if they're out of date: "CableLabs plans to complete the 2.0 version of the specification this year, and intends to accept DOCSIS 2.0 devices for certification and qualification in 2002."

2. It contains un-necessary entries added apprently to fill up space. For example, there is an entry titled "How are you today?" There is another titled, "no worries" (Australian for "no problem.") These fake entries are not funny, but rather awkward and contrived. Especially notable is the very long review of the movie "Deep Throat" in the chronology in the front of the book.

3. It has few illustrations. Constrast this with "Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary" (Wiley, 2007), which contains diagrams of most PDUs. That work is "only" 591 pages, yet covers many subjects this book doesn't.

4. It is sometimes hard to read. The author chose to start off many entries like this: "Imagine the Internet. Everyone and his uncle uses it." I expected more focused writing for a dictionary.

It is very comprehensive. It goes beyond defining terms and provides encyclopedic material on most subjects.

Hard to work without it
The telecom industry is endlessly creative in dreaming up new names and initials for its technologies. That's why Newton's is an annual and why it's the only book (I have an ((almost)) paperless office) that sits on my desk.

A Telecom Must Have
This is a must have book for any tech in the telecom industry.It is my go to book for interpreting network lingo.The author adds humor along with the explanations, which makes for interesting reading.I use it everyday!I have priced it elsewhere, and Amazon has it for half the price. Highly recommend!

a great desk reference
regardless if you work in the telecom industry or you just work with any form of technology, this is a great reference book to keep on your desk, in your bag, or in your car/truck. there are a few terms i have found missing from the book, but that is most defiantly rare, almost any telecom term you can think of will be in here.

A classic
Speaking from over 20 years of experience working at LECs and domestic and international LD carriers, and having used various telecom and networking dictionaries over the years, I can say with certainty that Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the best -- by a mile.

Each year 500 to 1,000 new definitions are added to Newton's, and existing definitions are updated, improved, or enhanced in other ways. No other telecom dictionary on the market has even half as many definitions as Newton's. In fact, if you combine the definitions from all the other telecom dictionaries and weed out duplicates, their combined total probably still will be less than half of what's in Newton's.Harry Newton clearly loves telecom, as shown by the copiousness of the dictionary, the continuous additions to it, and the continuous refinements of it.

Our company currently has around 30 copies of the 25th edition and 300 copies of earlier editions. Newton's is used in the following departments: network engineering, network planning, circuit layout, security, legal and regulatory, enterprise sales, small and medium business sales, consumer sales, wholesale markets, sales engineering, managed network services, strategy and business development, marketing, customer service, billing operations, operator services, IT, education and training, corporate communications, outside plant, station I&M, wireless ops, and PMO; it's also used by our company's senior executives.

Users of earlier editions of Newton's will be very pleased with this 25th anniversary edition. It has more terms than ever -- probably closer to 26,000 by my reckoning (based on a 10-page random sample) than the 24,950 indicated on the book's cover -- and a much more visually appealing and readable typography than was used in earlier editions.There are some new tables in the dictionary, expansions and updates of earlier definitions, and additional timeline dates.

Another interesting change is that the 25th edition uses a much thinner paper than earlier editions. It's the kind of paper that you see in books published in parts of the Far East, for example, in China and Taiwan. There are two practical benefits of this. First, even though the dictionary has grown by over 200 pages from its previous edition -- there are now 1,274 pages in the dictionary, not 1,250 pages as incorrectly stated in various booksellers' descriptions of it -- the dictionary is actually much lighter and thinner than previous editions. You can now easily carry it around with you. Second, because of the thin paper, it makes the book more flexible. You can open it to any page, let go of the page, and the book will stay open on that page.

This dictionary belongs in every department in every telco, cellco, cableco, pubco, satco, IXC, VoIP provider, AOS provider, systems integrator, managed services provider, equipment manufacturer, data center, and carrier hotel. Anyone outside of these industries who is involved in some way with telecom or networking, or who is studying it in school, or who writes about it for a living, will also find the 25th edition an indispensible resource.

Excellent Networking book.
I would like to preface this review by stating that I am an experienced network professional with in field hands on experience, a degree, and a Network+ certification.

I had to buy this book for a class that Im taking to finish my bachelor's degree and I am extremely impressed with this book. I didn't realize how expensive this book was, but trust me, its worth the money. ( I bought it through the school).

The author covers subjects that few networking books cover in a single edition and he includes hands on labs (these labs are some of the more useful ones that I have seen and are some of the most relevant to the field of networking). This books covers topics like VLANs, RSTP, etc. I have seen almost no networking books that cover these topics (in any detail). Also, the author goes the extra mile by explaining that certain technologies are dated.

This is a very good book and one I probably wont sell.

Informative yet Expensive
This book was filled with lots of information about networks, tcpip and other protocols. It does touch on some topics pretty heavily and can get confusing for newbees but overall it is a good book. I used it for a college course but may also be a good reference book. THE PRICE IS STEEP SO NO 5 STARS FROM ME!

Expensive
This is the most expensive textbook that I have ever bought. It is the seventh edition of the book and still it has spelling errors. You would think that if you are paying that much it should be perfect.

On the other hand it is up to date in technology. Networks and telecommunications are in constant change. This book keeps up with those changes.

telecom without the intimidation
Panko succeeds where others fail: to give the reader a 'kind' introduction to telecommunications. Focusing on a basic, introductory understanding of the material, Panko offers clear, simplistic explanations and diagrams to illustrate what would otherwise be dense material. Once this material is grasped, it is easier for readers to move to a more detailed text. But from a cursory standpoint, Panko does just what he set out to do: to give an introduction to this subject with just enough of a 'bite' for students with little or no prior background to decide whether or not this is a field they might like to pursue further. ... Informative Introduction to Telecommunications
This book starts with the very basics but eventually gets into some interesting information. If you are an experienced telecomm person, you may want to stand clear of this one because it provides lengthy coverage of some basic subjects.

On the other hand, if you are new to telecommunications it is an excellent text to start with. It gives the reader a good foundation knowledge of coding principles, client-server, OSI Model, packet and circuit switching, ATM, the list goes on. Most subjects are covered in more detail than just a quick overview, so you actually gain an understanding of the subject matter.

My favorite chapters were on network management, and network design and implementation. Also, the book is quite up-to-date with discussions on xDSL, Gigabit Ethernet, GSM, etc.

This book is NOT worth it.
I had to buy this for my intro to telecom class as some of the others.This book (stinks), unless you are an art major and want to learn all the basics about telecommunications.If you are SERIOUSLY looking to get into telecommunications, or networking theory, check out Computer Networks by Andrew S. Tanenbaum.It gives you MUCH more theory, in detail, and a hell-uv-alot less (...), for less money!! (...) This is the book we should have been using.Too bad this 300 level class was for beginners.Should've been a 100 level class.......I have been doing networking and System administration for about 5 years now, and this book is great overview, really really bad for networking concepts.Even managers should know what the hell their employees are doing on a deeper level....this book skims over the important decision making processes that any good "manager" would be asking of their top engineers.Of course, if the manager would have bought a better book, they probably wouldn't need to ask!!

Def not a good book!!
I and many others in my IT Management program were forced to buy this new text book for our intro to telecom course. All I can say about this book is that it is far to broad!

A must read
If you want to really learn and understand the world of telecommunications and data communications this book is a must read.Written in plain English, Horak's book is equally useful to the uninitiated and professional alike. In 15 chapters and two appendices spanning 762 pages, Horak has created a complete course of instruction that would cost the reader thousands of dollars to attend if it were offered live. The depth and breadth of information contained in this single volume is unmatched by other books I've read.Equally important is the use of plain English and Horak's writing style making this book eminently readable.

Horak has created a full course in a single book that will give the reader more overall knowledge of telecommunications and data communications than most practitioners working in the field today. In my years in this field I have not been more impressed by a single publication.I enthusiastically recommend this book to all who want to better understand this industry: be they students, professionals, or merely interested.

Better than the Internet!
Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook contains fifteen chapters and covers a wide variety of topics. The book can be recommended for different audiences, starting from students, which decided to become Electrical Engineers, as well as for engineers and managers, and technicians who need always to have a reliable source of information. It is a timely encyclopedic work and will remain so for many years! It also is a perfect companion to Horak's other excellent work, Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary, also published by Wiley in 2007.

Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. Superb, Across-the-Board Reference
(An earlier review may also appear after trying to merge and update an older acct with a new acct.) ...I picked this volume up at TechEd 2001. It maintains its relevancy four years later. The competition between related books brought the race down to "McGraw-Hill's Encyclopedia of Networking & Telecommunications" winning by one length over the "Microsoft Encyclopedia of Networking".
Tom Sheldon provided the most well-grounded and well-rounded information to fulfill the title of an "encyclopedia of networking" compared to Mitch Tulloch's very good but more Microsofted (I think microsoft as a verb can now come into play) approach to the subject and its fields.
Sheldon's book contains a greater variety of entries and their corresponding information (i.e. terms/acronyms like "NSA" & "PKI") instead of a namebrand focused presentation. I would like to see a "Special Characters" index category like Tulloch's book has, but this is not as necessary when using the search capability of the book's CD edition (which is included and loaded with hyperlinks to outside information sources).
I highly recommend Tom Sheldon's book. It's user-friendly layout and design are easy on the eyes, and I'm glad to have it at my desk (when I'm able to return it there after tracking down who last borrowed it).

A must have networking bible for networking students
I stumbled accross the old 2nd edition in our library and a day later I was in awe of Mr Sheldons fantatistic book. Unlike most networking books their is no waffle in this one. His style of writing disects networking information into logical digestible chunks. The second edition can be downloaded from his site but I recommend you getting your hands on the latest edition if possile because it is more upto date and has lots of new additions. This book is a one stop shop for everything you need to know about networking and a priceless resource for any networking student.

My IT Bible
Firstly I'd like to say...Thanks Tom, for helping to keep me in a job! Up until recently I worked as a Network Administrator in Sydney and believe me, your books saved my bacon on more than a few occasions! I first received the electronic edition of the Encyclopedia of Networking whilst studying Computer Technology and e-business in Sydney. The encyclopedia was included as part of the overall course and many references were made in the college's learning guides to certain chapters when more detailed information was necessary on a particular topic. I'm currently involved in the area of Multimedia and Telecommunications and recently obtained a copy of the latest edition, The Encyclopedia of Networking and Telecommunications and am amazed at how much extra and updated information has been included. I keep the book close by at all times and find myself referring to it quite regularly. I could now honestly say that it's become my IT bible! It covers all aspects of networking, the Internet, Electronic Communication, topologies, protocols, security and various configurations in absolute and thorough detail. The encyclopedia also comes with a CD that can be loaded onto your computer as a PDF file and the search facility works brilliantly. I must say that if anyone is involved in, or wants to know anything about Networking and Telecommunications this book is an absolute must! Personally, I can't see how I could do my job without it. One-stop gateway to the telecom world, but don't stop here.
I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation.I read Mr Green's book to get a broader understanding of the telecom world, of which network intrusion detection occupies a smallbut highly visible part.This immense book (774 pages of text, plus URLs,acronyms, and a glossary) addressed nearly every topic I had encounteredreading communications magazines, speaking with the telecom industry, andresearching the Web.While no single book can provide the depth needed fortruly understand a specific technology, Mr Green's work provided thefoundation for future research.For example, after getting the context forSS7, I may now buy "Signalling System #7, 3rd Edition" by TravisRussell.I didn't give the book five stars, as I was not completelycomfortable absorbing the material.This is the sort of book that requiresyou to read the whole book twice in order to appreciate the early chapters. References to technologies like ATM or frame relay in the first half ofthe book make much more sense after reading chapters dedicated to thoseissues.If Mr Green had given me slightly more to grasp while reading theearly material, or had perhaps organized the book with the telecom novicein mind, I may have given five stars.Nevertheless, if you're looking forone-stop shopping for telecommunications, I highly recommend this book. Don't be fooled by the "business" classification on the dustjacket -- this book is a technical volume, with protocol headers and otherdetails included.Great work Mr Green!

Probably the best summary of the economics of access regulation in the easly chapters that you'll find anywhere (particularly after the sad passing of Jean-Jacques) and a very accessible coverage of the application of those principles to the specific case of telecommunications.

Sadly, required reading.
In it's time, I'm sure that this was a great piece of reference material. However, standards have quickly evolved past the information contained in this book. Sadly this is required reference material for my state's contractor exam - I feel better knowing that all licensed cabling contractors are tested on long outdated material.

Great......if you only want to get info on running cabling
I was looking for detailed information on end-point wiring (66/110 blocks, RJ 45, etc.) and this book was on the top of all the book sellers lists.........but it wasn't what I was hoping for.

Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent reference for the engineering behing cabling signals, planning and installing cabling.But the information on what to do with the ends of the cables isn't what I was hoping for.

He could easily have made it good

A Casebook that Actually Teaches
Law students now have free or inexpensive access to online services offering cases and supporting documents. Big 100+ dollar leather-bound casebooks might as well go extinct (though the old-timers would never allow it) unless they can add some actual teaching to their reprints of information that is easily available elsewhere. This particular book is one of the few dealing with the esoteric subject of telecommunications law and policy, and the price is almost worth it because the authors actually seem to care whether students learn the deeper nuances of the topic, rather than just expecting you analyze case after case after case with no in-depth education on legal reasoning or the latest trends in industry.

In this book the cases are actually fairly rare and are supplemented fully with government agency documents from which new rules and laws are formulated (crucial background info that is rare to nonexistent in standard casebooks) and law review articles by experts in the telecommunications field, giving the student a robust non-judicial understanding of the factors involved in recent court decisions and government regulatory strategies. The subject matter is also comprehensive and presented in an order that makes sense and efficiently uses the space available. The key to this book's success are the frequent notes and questions that appear after cases, helping the student actually think about the dry legalese they just got finished reading (though the rhetorical "what if?" questions do get out of hand at times). Overall, this is a law school casebook that actually synthesizes the information presented in a way that helps the student, and not just a publisher whose idea of education is to charge monstrous prices for a never-ending list of reprinted cases. well-written and nearly comprehensive
Benjamin, Lichtman, and Shelanski have written an excellent book on U.S. telecommunications law.The book provides a glimpse at the early history of U.S. radio telecommunications and brings the reader up to fairly recent developments. Explanations of the spectrum, arguments of why broadcast media have been regulated (children's tv, indecency, Fairness Doctrine, for example), selected court cases and FCC actions are provided."Notes and questions" are provided at the end of segments within each chapter and help the reader anticipate issues addressed subsequently.The book is well written and the authors have an enjoyable sense of humor.While the book does give attention to the Internet, readers might want to supplement the book's coverage by reading Sharon Black's "Telecommunications Law in the Internet Age" published in 2002 by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers.
