Editorial Review Product Description Author Annabel Z. Dodd begins by pointingout that telecommunications technologies have everything to do withsignals moving over media. She then goes on to catalog some of thevarious kinds of signals and media, covering traditional switchedtelephone service, dedicated lines, public branch exchanges (PBXs),and automatic call distributors (ACDs) along the way. After that forayinto technology, she gets into the U.S. telecommunications businessenvironment, focusing heavily on the federal breakup of AT&T in 1984and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. She then explains additionaltechnologies; data communications and the Internet-ISDN, Frame Relay, and analog modems all get attention. The author also pays plenty ofattention to wireless solutions, including satellitecommunications. Unlike Newton's TelecomDictionary (which remains an excellent resource), this bookcan be successfully read from start to finish by a reader withpractically no telecommunications knowledge at the outset. Read andunderstand--that's what good technical books, like this one, enableyou to do. --David Wall Customer Reviews (55)

Informative Introduction to Telecommunications On the other hand, if you are new to telecommunications it is an excellent text to start with. It gives the reader a good foundation knowledge of coding principles, client-server, OSI Model, packet and circuit switching, ATM, the list goes on. Most subjects are covered in more detail than just a quick overview, so you actually gain an understanding of the subject matter. My favorite chapters were on network management, and network design and implementation. Also, the book is quite up-to-date with discussions on xDSL, Gigabit Ethernet, GSM, etc.
This book is NOT worth it.

Review of Competition in Telecommunications
Network Competition in Practice As usual, theoretical developments follows technologicaladvances that allow profitable entry in a typical natural monopoly market. Moreover, this book highlights the importance for policy makers in helpingentry in this market by eliminating legal entry barriers, or in some casessubsiding new becomers. Although this book is more oriented to policymakers than academics, I would like to have seeing more formal treatmentfor some of the many topics cover by professor Laffont. Nevertheless, thisbook represents an excellent summary of network competition literature. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description While building on Krattenmaker's foundation, the Benjamin/Lichtman/Shelanski text is an entirely new book. It covers new subjects - for example, the text now includes case studies of digital television and low-power FM radio; a full chapter on direct broadcast satellite service; a chapter on telecommunications mergers; and several chapters on the Internet and advanced services regulation more generally. The book also covers familiar topics but in significantly greater depth. The telephone and cable materials, for example, have been expanded and completely rewritten, emphasizing key economic concepts that are carefully explained and then tied to the relevant legal and policy issues. In short, the new book mirrors the sweeping changes that have occurred in the field in recent years, while maintaining enough of Krattenmaker's original structure that faculty who have used the earlier two editions should find it easy to integrate the new text into the course they already love to teach. A teacher's manual is available, and a 2003 supplement is forthcoming. Customer Reviews (5)
