Product Description
After decades of liberalization of the telecommunications industry around the world and technological convergence that allows for increasing competition, sector-specific regulation of telecommunications has been on the decline. As a result, the telecommunications industry stands in the middle of a debate that calls for either a total deregulation of access to broadband infrastructures or a separation of infrastructure from service delivery. This book proposes new approaches to dealing with the current and future issues of regulation of telecommunication markets on both a regional and a global scale.

This volume represents a valuable compendium of ideas regarding global trends in the telecommunications industry that focus on market and regulatory issues and company strategies. With an international cast of contributors, Regulation and the Evolution of the Global Telecommunications Industry also provides insight into topics including: mobile Internet development, structural function and separation, global experiences with next generation networks, technology convergence and the role of regulation, and the regulatory impact on the balance between static and dynamic efficiencies.

The empirical evidence and experiences presented here illustrate the diversity of thoughts and research that characterize this important area of academic and business research. Thus, it will be a critical reference for scholars and students of regulatory economics, policy and finance and researchers and administrators of the telecom industry. ... Read more

Product Description
China's telecommunications industry has seen revolutionary transformation and growth over the past three decades. Chinese Internet users number nearly 150 million, and the PRC expects to quickly pass the US in total numbers of connected citizens. The number of mobile and fixed-line telephone users soared from a mere 2 million in 1980 to a total of nearly 800 million in 2007. China has been the most successful developing nation in history for spreading telecommunications access at an unparalleled rapid pace.

This book tells how China conducted its remarkable "telecommunications revolution". It examines both corporate and government policy to get citizens connected to both voice and data networks, looks at the potential challenges to the one-party government when citizens get this access, and considers the new opportunities for networking now offered to the people of one of the world's fastest growing economies.

The book is based on the author's fieldwork conducted in several Chinese cities, as well as extensive archival research. It focuses on key issues such as building and running the country's Internet, mobile phone company rivalry, foreign investment in the sector, and telecommunications in China's vibrant city of Shanghai. It also considers the country's internal "digital divide", and questions how equitable the telecommunications revolution has been. Finally, it examines the ways the PRC's entry to the World Trade Organization will shape the future course of telecommunications growth. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Auful, Horrible, Full of Errors, Waste of Money!
...After reviewing the text and the associated Training CD I could not believe this ...ever got published.I found numerouse errors, omissions, and misinformation.

In conclusion...I'll steer clear of any thing these authors publish in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted and full of mistakes
The minimum requirement for a technology-oriented book would be that it gets the technology right. The Telecommunications Survival Guide does not pass this test. There are plenty of errors in there, some of them on a very conceptual level. For example, the authors confuse connection-oriented service with circuit switched service. These concepts are so basic, that they really should not be confused by any expert in the field.

The writing style is supposed to be casual and funny, which is a good approach, however, often the text is somehow convoluted. Concepts are badly explained, and even in the examples it is sometimes hard to figure out what the authors are getting at.

Overall comment: Not recommended at all, I'd give zero stars if there were the option.

1-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted and full of mistakes
The least one must expect from a "telecommunications survival guide" is that it got the facts right. This book does not pass the test. The authors get simple things wrong, which makes me wonder whether they have sufficient competency to write such a book. For example, they state that circuit switched service is the same as connectionless service. Gentlemen, this is fundamentally wrong!
Moreover, the entire book is somewhat convoluted and confusing. Sometimes I had a hard time to grasp what the authors are trying to get at.
I doubt that the Professor who wrote the positive review below has really read the book.
I strongly discourage anybody to buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of factual errors
Was provided to me by my employer (a CLEC on the west coast), and many of my 'old telco' peers were amazed at the mistakes. Many factual errors abound. Particularly, simple definitions and descriptions were all oversimplified to the point of misrepresenting the terms. Also, there is no glossary.

This book has promise, would love to compare the 2nd edition, assuming it has corrections and glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telecom Professor comments on "Telecom Survival Guide"
One of the best Telecom foundation books I have ever read.Excellent overview and comprehensive coverage of Telecom today.Particularly beneifical for readers that would like a comprehensive overview and reference for Telecom technologies in business language delivery.Witty and refreshing. My highest recommendation for professionals in Information Technology that would like a single reference for Telecom.Assumes minimal technical knowledge. Perfect book for beginning Telecom or computer students at any University or College. Project leaders, telecom and computer professionals will also enjoy this reference.I will be looking forward for future publications from Mr. and Mr. Moulton. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Becoming a bit out of date, but still a decent overview!
I had provided an earlier review of this book, so this is more
of an additional comment.

The copy I have is still one of the ones I start with to get a
basic overview of the subject matter. It is starting to get a
bit out of date, yes, but still a decent read. Again, it has some
grammatical errors (as pointed out by another reviewer), but
that is not essential to the content. Also, PCS was (and still
is to some degree) too "new" at the time this was written
to be included and this should not be held against the author.

As I have mentioned before, to dive into detail requires a copy
of the relevent standards (expensively available from Global
Engineering), so this kind of overview has a place on the shelf
- for quick basic checks, if nothing else!

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is badly written and has huge gaps.
Prospective readers should heed the following warnings:

(1) The term "cellular" is used here in the restrictive sense that excludes the PCS band.

(2) The author may know his subject, but his grasp ofEnglish grammar and syntax is pathetic.

(3) Much of the material piled together here was alreadyobsolete in the first edition, let alone the second.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of cellular communications
This is an excellent overview of the various cellular communication technologies in use today. The text has a good blend of general information about Analog AMPS, TDMA and CDMA, and also provides enough detail abouteach of these technologies to be very useful as an overview text (completedetail usually requires a perusal of the relevant EIA/TIA standards so I donot expect any text to provide that degree of information.) Please note Ihave only skimmed the radio and antenna sections of this book and cannotcomment on those chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analog and digital cellular systems in well-written volume
I found the treatment of antenna siting and signal propagation to be especially interesting. The fresnel zone treatment is excellent, and I needed this clarity in a quick response microwave TV link. The exposition of antenna patterns and Rayleigh fading propagation paths affected by multipath aided understanding of this intense subject. ... Read more

Product Description
The telecommunications industry has experienced dynamic changes over the past several years, and those exciting events and developments are reflected in the chapters of this volume. The Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC) holds an unrivaled place at the center of national public policy discourse on issues in communications and information. TPRC is one of the few places where multidisciplinary discussions take place as the norm. The papers collected here represent the current state of research in telecommunication policy, and are organized around four topics: competition, regulation, universal service, and convergence.

The contentious competition issues include bundling as a strategy in software competition, combination bidding in spectrum auctions, and anticompetitive behavior in the Internet. Regulation takes up telephone number portability, decentralized regulatory decision making versus central regulatory authority, data protection, restrictions to the flow of information over the Internet, and failed Global Information Infrastructure initiatives. Universal service addresses the persistent gap in telecommunications from a socioeconomic perspective, the availability of competitive Internet access service and cost modeling. The convergence section concentrates on the costs of Internet telephony versus circuit switched telephony, the intertwined evolution of new services, new technologies, and new consumer equipment, and the politically charged question of asymmetric regulation of Internet telephony and conventional telephone service.

3-0 out of 5 stars Catherine Harris - Great Book
The author does a great job at providing the information necessary for Teleocommunications Management. I'm a manager with SBC a large telco in St. Louis. The only item I see missing from this book as with other books is the importanace of the ability to manage management. As a telecom manager, I'm not very good at managing people or admitedly have much knowledge of telecom, but I'm great at managing my management which has allowed me to progress. This book needs to not only reflect the managerial concepts of technology, but of salesmanship and the real world scenerios I run into every day.I do however feel this is a great reference for general telecommunications information and would recommend people read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book of enterprise telecommunication system design
I think the book covers a complete discussion of every telecommunication facility development topic. The book starts from basic issues, such as selecting equipments and using them, to the cost analysis of develop the system. This makes the book comfortable for telco manager who never did business telecommunication system development before. I think this book is perfect for every telco manager. This book is, I think, also suitable for engineers and technicians to open and broaden the cost analysis of systems developed. I think the author is an expert in enterprise telecommunication system design and knows what he is doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your studying for an exam(VDV), this is the book to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete information from someone in business [....]
This book is obsolete. A new employee for our company bought a used copy of this book for himself and showed me information on TIA cabling standard that are obsolete. For our new employees, we use updated BICSI manuals. Most of the explanations are also incomplete. Overall, this book is not worth the money. To see more updated information on telecommunication installation visit our website: [....]

1-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Obsolete
Many portions of this book (the 2nd edition) are obsolete. This is due to a new TIA cabling standard (568-B) which was ratified right around the time of this book's release in the Spring of 2001.BICSI has since released a 3rd edition in 3-ring-binder format, but McGraw-Hill has not as of yet released the hardcover of the 3rd edition. If you plan on buying this book, either get the 3rd edition through BICSI or wait for McGraw-Hill to publish a hardcopy of the 3rd edition. But before you buy, read on...

Other than the now obsolete portions of this book, it is accurate, but without many exercises or detailed labs in this volume, I'd have to agree with other reviewers here and call it "lacking detail."Perhaps a lab-book is where all the details went.I have also noticed that this book goes so far out of its way to be "vendor-neutral" that it sometimes uses terms that almost nobody in the industry would recognize. This edition also fails to mention some new cabling innovations that have been around since early 2000.

Finally, just one point of interest here; the primary reviewer who has give this book a 5-star rating has a vested interest in the book as well.He is listed in the acknowledgements section of this book, so take those comments with a grain-of-salt.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete Information
This book contains old and soon to be obsolete information.Another reviewer says in his review "Its my understanding that an update is in the works and it can only get better".He is right. According to BICSI, they have written and will soon beselling a new version of this book. But this is the old book! I purchased this book now I find out that a new version is about to be released. I can't believe they are selling old book and passing them off as new material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is dissapointing
I was expecting a lot when I purchased this book.I have been in the cable installation industry for over 25 years.I was looking for a book to teach communication cabling installation to new employees and to other individuals thinking of entering the cabling installation industry. The book has two major problems.First, the book provides cabling specifications that are based on old TIA cabling standards.BICSI publishes other manuals that have more up to date information. Therefore, this book contradicts the latest TIA cabling standards and other information that is used by everyone in the cabling industry. Second, most of the book's content is filled with bulleted points organized into lists.I assume that these bulleted point must be important but there is virtually no meaningful expanation of what these bulleted points mean and why they are important. As a result, I read lots of pages but didn't learn any useful information from this book.If you purchase this book and think you will become a cabling expert, you won't! ... Product Description

In this timely book, Rob Frieden points out the myriad ways the United States has fallen behind other countries in telecommunications. Despite the appearance of robust competition and entrepreneurism in U.S. telecom markets, there is very little of either. Because of an inattentive Congress and a misguided FCC unwilling to confront real problems, industry incumbents have been able to earn healthy profits while keeping the United States in the backwaters of Internet-based information, communication, and entertainment markets. At every turn, regulators have tipped the scales in favor of large established companies, creating an environment that stifles innovation. As a consequence, Americans are stuck with relatively slow connectivity and with equipment that lacks features that have been staples in other countries for years. In telecommunications, the United States is a little like a third world country that is developing under crushing bureaucracies without recognizing that the rest of the world has passed it by. Frieden not only shows how failure can intrude on the ability of the United States to compete but suggests how to restore its competitiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars QoS Measurement and Evaluation of Telecommunications Quality
As a practicing consultant in telecommunications, I have found this book extremely practical and useful in the area of Voice Quality measurement.VOIP will never reach its potential unless it can measure up to the quality of other telecommunication services.Dr. Hardy outlines a practical and real approach to measuring the quality and comparing it to other voice services. This book will provide the novice and the expert with an understanding of this subject and it provides a handy primer to keep in your briefcase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for those who buy or sell telecomm services
Despite the title, this book is not about measuring bits and bytes in the data stream. It describes a customer-oriented methodology for measuring the quality of telecommunications service -- a methodology that has been developed and successfully applied by the author over the course of 30 years' experience in the telecomm industry. As such, it is an important book for those who buy, consult on, or sell telecomm services. Those who work in the marketing and engineering departments of service providers will also read it with profit, since it helps answers that age-old question, "What does my customer really want?"

Part I of the book defines and discusses basic concepts in the methodology, including all-important user concerns such as the accessibility, reliability, and quality of a given telecomm service. Part II of the book shows how to apply the concepts to a given type of telecomm service, first by deriving more specific user concerns from the generic ones discussed in Part I, and then by showing how to quantify and evaluate measurements of service quality.

Once they have read this book, consumers of telecomm services will be in a superior position to ask meaningful questions about the quality of service that they care about, rather than have to accept the engineering-oriented measurements that are typically produced. Equally, those who provide telecomm services will be much better able to address their customers' needs, and to show how and why their service is better than their competition's. For either class of reader, the time and effort invested to understand this book is a good investment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Telecom Signaling book I have seen
I am an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University teaching a Computer Science course in "Telecommunications and Voice over IP (VoIP)" and this is a great book!Unfortunately, I discovered the book too late to order for the class this year (hesitant due to the high price), but I am glad I found it.I used the book throughout this year's class (Jan-Apr) and it is now the textbook for the Spring 2010 class.

It covers a breadth of material in quite good detail, which makes it a challenge to use just because all of it cannot be taught in a single semester. It does give plenty of well-explained material for use.

This is a great book for telecom and VoIP signaling details!

4-0 out of 5 stars A keeper!
Six new chapters included in this edition... Access systems, CDMA, INAP, VOIP, ATM and ITU-T improvements are all here. Well presented, detailed, thorough references.A good book for looking up signaling details.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for understanding Signaling and Telecomm
I am teaching a college course on Telecommunications Technologies and have read over ten books on various communications areas, as well as numeroous web articles. This book is probably the best presentation I have read so far. It gives a precise and clear description of the topics it covers. It combines two seemingly conflicting characteristics: it is concise but comprehensive.
The presentation is very illuminating because it often explains the rationale behind features of protocols and architectures.
Descriptions of telecomm networks, transmission etc, given in the book as background, are very good for overview and general understanding.
I warmly recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it a lot!
Well written. Both this book and Manterfield's book are the best books in this area at the moment. It is clear the author is very technical skilled in Signalling, and this makes for a book that is easy to read and to understand. I do not think that if you wish to know about signalling/SS7 that you will be disappointed with buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars best signaling book
best book I have read on telecom signaling. I especially like the chapterson SS7, TUP, ISUP, ISDN Q.931. The coverage focuses more on functionalitythan on the details of the protocols, which you can anyway pick up from thestandards once you have the basic understanding. This book uses a lot ofexamples that make sense and the author appears to know the technology wellenough to provide useful insight. The materials have been digested and veryreadably presented to the reader. This is a book you can really learn a lotcomparing with other books which blatantly copy the standard text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars C'est IN-CROY-A-BLE
This book was amazing. I could not put it down. The interesting and comprehensible writing was magnificently crafted and very thought-provoking, a real page turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and readable.
There's a lot to like in this book. It's comprehensive and easily the most readable 1500 page book you are ever likely to encounter.

Two substantive criticisms (i) it can be astonishingly opinionated at times. There is a pronounced pro-Bell bias and a dismissive attitude toward regulation and regulators generally. Not every reader will consider that a bad thing, but I found it shrill and annoying.(ii) The book can be very weak and frequently inaccurate when it wanders off the law and into policy analysis.I didn't sense that the authors were particularly knowledgeable about economics or technology and it showed in a poor comprehension of the reasoning behind FCC policy.

I was surprised that another reviewer recommended Benjamin's 'Telecommunications Law and Policy' as an easier introduction.Benjamin et al is an excellent casebook, but Kellogg et al is an easier read.In fact, they are excellent complements as Benjamin provides the more authoritative reference with lots of source materials.Sharon Black's book is an excellent but basic introduction to Telecom Law.

My recommendation.Read Black, then Kellogg, then Benjamin. That's not an order of preference, just the best sequence to peel away the onion of telecom law.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to telecom issues
This is a comprehensive introduction to all sorts of telecommunications (mainly telephone regulation) issues. It's probably a bit much for the novice; something like Stuart Benjamin's Telecommunications Law and Policy is probably a better match there. But, if you want all the details, this is definitely the place to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect primer for K Street telecom associates.
There isn't anything else like this on the market. It contains all the FCC and court and DOJ lore on telecom from the beginning of the century through the 1996 Act up to the present. The spicy bits apparently werewritten by pundit Peter Huber (who isn't identified in the listing above).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and Universal
This book gives the novice a very accessible route to the world of telecommunications and gives the expert a very comprehensive reference book.Very highly recommended. The FCC wants universal service?Thisbook is universal in and of itself. ... Read more

Product Description
A concise, authoritative guide to twenty-first-century telecom project management

As the telecommunications industry experiences ongoing rapid change, projects remain the driver of the industry's evolution. Projects continue to be crucial to the success of the companies offering products and services in this area. Written by a prominent leader in the field, this pocket guide provides an overview of the telecommunications environment as it has evolved over the past few years, illustrating the need for project management and providing a basic understanding of project management concepts. Going beyond standard processes and techniques to address the special—and changing—needs of the telecom industry, the book then demonstrates the application of project management best practices in the field.

Beginning with a clear definition of a project and an outline of the players involved, the guide then helps you set your project and business objectives (and explains why they are not always the same). It explains how to analyze your project's scope and manage procurement. Next, various aspects of project risks are reviewed, along with communications requirements. From here, you'll delve into some of the core concepts of project management—building and maintaining a schedule, managing the costs, and keeping on top of developments. Then the task of managing people is explored, addressing management styles, team building, leadership, workloads, and rewards.

The guide illustrates, via sample projects, the application of project management—as advocated by the Project Management Institute—to the special needs of the telecom industry. The chapters work through three telecom projects from different corporate perspectives: the first involves the introduction of a new wireless technology, which will allow telecom services to remote cities using fourth-generation cellular technology; the second evolves an existing landline network from circuit switched to IP-based, delivering Internet services; and the third designs and installs a corporate customer network showcasing services offered by the industry.

People in both line and staff functions at telecommunications companies who manage either large or small projects will find the featured project management techniques and their real-world applications invaluable. In addition, telecom companies, manufacturers and suppliers who serve the telecom industry, Internet providers, and companies that make products for the datacom industry will also benefit from this brief, accessible guide. ...
