This book follows in the same style of Dr. Blahut's other books on coding--terse and no nonsense.It works for me but others may find it too austere.Blahut is primarily a coding expert but his general knowledge of digital communications is pretty broad.Although I have not read this book in totality, the chapters I have read support good fundamentals in an beginner to intermediate level.In general, all of Blahut's writing assume a certain level of mathematical sophistication from the reader as his arguments and proofs are short and concentrated.They are good concise reference books that are useful to researchers to get an alternate explanation.However, in general, they would not be good for the average student to learn from without support from other resources.This book is better than his other two as an intro.I would give this book 5 stars if the book go into more implementation detail, i.e. the chapter on adaptive filters gives you good theory but stops short on the ways to implement the theory. ... Very light on useful information
This book mostly states the obvious.My job involves telecom and finances, and there's no useful material that helps me do my job better.

Strother book is better
Brosnan and Messina write an excellent guide to managing costs for urban east coast businesses (i.e. New York). Much of their stuff is super-technical and a little impractical for the average telecom manager. And they don't say much about contract negotiation, RFPs, and wireless services (which can be fairly expensive nowadays).

For a much simpler perspective I suggest the book by S.C. Strother "Telecommunications Cost Management". It costs more than this book, but its well worth it. It is well-organized and more comprehensive. You get the feeling Brosnan and Messina are telecom lawyers, while Strother seems to be a telecom insider.

Everything you always wanted to know
Well maybe not everything. The technology is broad and ever changing. However this book is packed with juicy tidbits about all kinds of broad band communications.I already know a lot of the information. However there are two distinct advantages in this book. One is to tell you what you know from a different point of view; this help round out the concepts in ones head. The second advantage is the book starts from ground zero allowing non technical people the ability to communicate and make educated decisions about communications.

After this overview book you can go into more depth with the manuals from the product. However you will find yourself coming back to this book to affirm the concepts. You can use the book like a dictionary of terms or an encyclopedia.

a book on such advanced topics with no bibliography
I must admit that I am very disappointed with this book.

Being somebody who worked in some of the areas, I find most of the definitions and discussions in the book far from being precise, and incomplete. The author tries to cover too much, but in my opinion fails to do so. It just touches some technologies.

My biggest surprise was to see a book of such advanced topics with no references, or bibliograpghy, apart from some ITU Specs or IETF docs inserted into the text. The author probably has a lot of knowledge in a lot of areas, but the book should be able to point towards the real source of the information or provide pointers for more interested readers.

I must admit that I consider the money I spent on this book wasted.

I personally would have liked to see a preface, and read about the aim, intended audience of this book.

This book is needed as much as the "good book"
This book covers all the basics in Broadband circuits. As a field operations engineer, I deal with all types of circuits. DS0, DS1(T1/EC1), DS3(T3), STS,ISDN, all DSL type circuits, OC3-OC48, and DWDM. My job travels me around the U.S. alone testing and turning up circuits and this book insures me of knowing what is what when dealing with these types of circuits. Clear understanding of terms and procedures for the greenest(new person)technician in the business. I've purchased over $600.00 in books on telephony and telecom over the past 4 years and this is one of few that thats worth holding on to. A must have for broadband junkies like me.

Terrible writing, but interesting
Self-similar models provide a concise description of the traffic dynamics across different time-scales. This topic, which is important to understand network traffic properties, appeared in the early 90's and has grown steadily since then. The topic has been underlooked by practitioners due to the lack of concrete applications. This lack of practical applications however is no excuse not to understand the extent of the problem ofetwork traffic dynamics. The book reviews the state-of-the-art in self-similar traffic modelling. The authors try throughout the book to provide intuitive explanations of the formalisms and their applications to network traffic.

The book starts with an explanation of the different formalisms (models) that have been introduced in the literature: fractals and multifractals, self-similar processes, and heavy-tailed distributions. Those three types of models correspond to three different views of network traffic seen as a signal. Fractals and multifractals give the viewpoint of geometry and concentrate on the dimension(s) of the mathematical function represented by the signal. Self-similar processes give a statistical view of the signal: how do the statistical properties of the process behave under time aggregation (zooming out). The heavy-tail models concentrate on the distribution of the values of the process: how often to large values occur? This last view is the static, i.e. time-invariant, way of modeling traffic. The various ways to estimate the self-similarity parameter, called Hurst parameter, are explained. The Hurst parameter estimation problem is hard, but gives much insight into the assumtions of the different models.

The next chapter reviews the different methods to generate self-similar processes. As those processes have unusual properties compared to the better known memory-less processes, simulating them requires sophisticated tools, and the properties of the simulated time series are hard to control. The generation problem is highly related to the estimation one: generating a signal that has the right properties requires to be able to properly estimate them.

The next two chapters deal with the self-similarity of two different types of traffic: real-time and best-effort traffic. Real-time traffic has properties very dependent from the applications that generates it. Modeling real-time traffic hence requires some knowledge of how voice and video applications work. The behavior of best- effort traffic on the other hand does not require much knowledge of the underlying applications, but non stationarity from daily and weekly patterns clearly modulate its dynamics.

Finally, the last chapter concerns the main application of traffic self-similarity: queuing and performance evaluation. The influence of the self-similarity on the queue length and the blocking probability demonstrates the interest of properly understanding traffic dynamics when designing network elements. Although self-similarity remains a highly academic topic, its beauty lies in revealing the complexity of traffic dynamics.

The content of this book is very interesting for specialists in the field (although you'll not learn much compared to literature), as it gives a bit different perspective from other books on the topic. The main problem is the terrible writing (hence the three stars only). I would bet no native English speaker ever proof-read this book because there are errors almost in each paragraph. ... Thrown together but not explained well.
I was so excited when I found this book in the Sunnyvale public library. It covered a lot of subjects which would be interesting to any one in the field. But I was very dissappointed when I took the book home and tried toread it. The writer has just thrown things together without carefullyexplaining or organizing them. This book in no way qualifies as a text bookor as any book you can learn from, unless you already know the subjectquite well. Shame!

This book has a lot of technical information. But it has not been compiled properly. It is hard to understand if you are new to some of the concepts. Plus the book costs a lot. Nice book on Digital Receivers...
I have studied many books on Digital Communications but the style of the authors from Digital Receivers point of view is quite nice. It starts from very basics and builds up things gradually... I would recommend this book to every Communication Engineer who is interested in Estimation and Detection !

Very practical and advanced textbook
This is an extremely useful book for any Digital Communication System designer or engineers who wish to develop digital transmitters and (especially) receivers for a given system. Covers all aspects, including recent developments and classic algorithms used for synchronization of digital communication systems. Phase synchronization, timing offset estimation, and frequency offset synchronization are treated in detail. A particularly interesting section about effect (degradation) due to non-synchronized receiver is given. I could not quantitative and intuitive treatment of this topic anywhere else. However, this book is recommended only to those who understand the basic communication theory very well.

Across the bridge and beyond
This book is an excellent learning tool for those who are already familiar with communication theory and are interested in communication over fading channels. This book also contains very recent work that has not beencovered anywhere else, for example, relating estimation theory andinformation theory. This is highly recommended, but only for those with astrong background in communication theory.

Comprehesive treatment of digital receiver design
Floyd Gardner has written a comprehensive reviewin the IEEE Communications Magazine, September 1998, Vol.36 No.)on two recent books on the subject. (one being the book discussed here)

This book has some fantastic material in it.I am now teaching college.Whenever I get a chance to recommend a book, I always recommend my students use this book.It has a phenomenal section about telecommunication laws that is outstanding for using in lectures.It reads well, and is very helpful!

If I had a choice, I would not read this book.
As a beginner in the telecommunications field I was expecting something more simple and understandable.It is full of boring and unnecessary paragraphs, especially the ones in the blue windows.The book is very chatty and verbose.It is wasting my time. I was assigned this book at DeVry for a freshman telecommunications management course.The professor agrees that the book is written in a very complicated language. Every time he quotes the book, he stops to say: "Now, Let's translate this to English".If it was my decision, I would not choose this book for my class.

Great Text
Having taken the course that this book is for, I quickly learned the basics of Telecommunications. The author's designed the layout of the text to be an easy entry to this vast technical field.Each chapter isintroduced with a general "story", sometimes several stories,that explains in layman's terms the overall concept. Then the text explainsthe information on a more technical level. Some of the informationpresented IS outdated but all of it is relevant.The authors included this"outdated" information to show just what has been accomplished inthe arena of Telecom. But they also introduce some of what is to come. A"Thumbs Up" to both of the authors for publishing a great text.

Great for Intro to Business Communications
I did not have much previous knowledge of telecommunications and their use in the business world.I feel that this text is an excellent introduction for any executive or student who has no prior experience with this topic. It is well written and flows very well. It is written in a manner thananyone can take it and gain a world of knowledge about the telecomindustry.

Not at all very friendly!
The book drags, it explains nothing. Its out dated, and very poorly written. Absolutely the worst book I ever had to read. Have sleeping disorders try reading a few pages of this book, it is the perfect sedative. ... Read more

The book is very good, but a little difficult
I bought this book several weeks ago. Frankly, the shipping and the book is excellent. However, the content of the book is a little difficult. Author use strange word which I cannot look up in the simple dictionary. In sum, If you have enough time to read and analyze, this should be a good choice

An excelent view
Mr. Mostafa put well an "so many years" experienced view and knowledge of telecommunication projects on his book, being an important contribution for us who work on this market. I learned important topics of telecom projects so I hardly recommend this book to all of my partners.
