From the supplier: There are 10 guidelines that office workers should follow for successful telecommuting. These are adopting a contract mentality, writing expected output for the week every Monday, planning meetings with supervisors or managers, attending group or team meetings, acquiring individual rooms for every telecommuter, using technology in out-of-office activities, and using a home office. The other three steps are for employees to share work experiences to other telecommuters, manage themselves for the managers, and set checkpoints to guarantee the effectiveness of the telecommuting process.

From the supplier: Insurance companies are gradually allowing more employees to work at a distance from their office through telecommuting plans. Managers have discovered that in certain professions, including customer service, telemarketers, high-level managers, and sales reps, the ability to telecommute can increase productivity and morale. Cigna has experimented with making entire departments telecommuting departments.

Description:
In 1999 the National Air Quality and Telecommuting Act established pilot telecommuting programs (ecommute) in five major US metropolitan areas. The major goal of the ecommute program was to examine whether a particular type of economic incentive, tradable emissions credits from telecommuting, represents a viable strategy for reducing vehicle miles traveled and improving air quality. A context is established for evaluating whether the envisioned trading scheme represents a feasible approach to reducing mobile source emissions and promoting telecommuting and a review of the limited experience with mobile source emissions trading programs is provided. Using two-and-one-half years of data collected in the ecommute program, telecommuting frequency, mode choice, and emissions reductions are examined. It is found that from a regulatory perspective, the most substantial drawback to such a program is its questionable environmental integrity, resulting from difficulties in designing sufficiently rigorous quantification protocols to accurately measure the emissions reductions from telecommuting. Such a program is not likely to be cost-effective because the emissions reductions from a single telecommuter are very small. ... Read more

From the supplier: Telecommuting has legal implications that are often overlooked by managers. It should be implemented on a part-time basis during the early stages of its adoption in any organization. This will allow managers and subordinates to find out if this working arrangement is effective. Managers may have to adjust their management styles to those that will better suit teleworkers. This could be done by establishing clear goals and managing by results instead of a controlled managerial style. Teleworkers should also be given copies of memos and other documents that they normally receive at the office.

From the supplier: Telecommuting is becoming a viable alternative to traditional work arrangements in recruiting and maintaining a quality workforce. In the 1990s, increasing non-work demands upon workers necessitates more flexible work designs. Telecommuting refers to a system wherein employees do most of their work at home or off-site, while reporting to the main office only a few times per week. This definition covers about 100,000 workers in the United States. A survey of telecommuters in 11 firms from a wide range of industries reveals the level of satisfaction telecommuters experience regarding their working arrangements. The questionnaire included sections on productivity, promotions, supervisory support, and other evaluative areas. The respondents revealed that communication, interaction, family and supervisory support toward telecommuters determine their levels of confidence and job satisfaction.
