Editorial Review

Product Description
In the tradition of Southern school superintendents, Mildred E. Doyle was a former athlete, a jock, and a "good old boy" politician in a tailored suit. She was also a great character--courageous, mischievous, and contradictory--both beloved and considered odd. In Doyle's biography, McGarrh analyzes issues that interest educational historians and feminist scholars: women's struggles to attain and retain administrative positions; differences in the ways men and women supervise and lead; and the impact of homophobia on those who are not stereotypically "masculine" or "feminine." Kellie McGarrh's Mildred E. Doyle was characterized by ambiguity, contradictions, and paradox, and her life served both to confirm and confound generalizations about women leaders. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, the legislature of the Southwest Territory chartered Blount College in Knoxville as one of the first three colleges established west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1807, the school changed its name to East Tennessee College. The school relocated to a 40-acre tract, known today as “the Hill,” in 1828 and was renamed East Tennessee University in 1840. The Civil War literally shut down the university. Students and faculty were recruited to serve on battlefields, and troops used campus facilities as hospitals and barracks. In 1869, East Tennessee University became the state’s land-grant institution under the auspices of the 1862 Morrill Act. In 1879, the state legislature changed the name of the institution to the University of Tennessee. By the early 20th century, the university admitted women, hosted teacher institutes, and constructed new buildings. Since that time, the University of Tennessee has established campuses and programs across the state. Today, in addition to a rich sports tradition, the University of Tennessee provides Tennesseans with unparalleled opportunities. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The Vanderbilt Divinity School is one of only four university-based interdenominational institutions in the United States, and the only one in the South. As such, its history provides a distinct vantage point for viewing what has occurred in theological education since the latter part of the nineteenth century. In this book, the contributors explore the school's history in terms of four main themes: * Engagement with southern culture, present from the beginnings of the university but taking on special significance in the mid-twentieth century around the issue of race; *The transition from an institution of the church (Methodist) to an independent and interdenominational school with a liberal Protestant orientation; *The development of the modern research university, evident in the establishment of a graduate program in religion in addition to its program for the profession of ministry; *From the 1950s, a growing concern with diversity and inclusivity, in keeping with national and international issues and developments both religious and cultural, which has broadened the school's sense of ecumenism and deepened its commitments to social justice. Conflict has played an important part in shaping the history of the Vanderbilt Divinity School, from struggles over initial visions to questions of financial support and institutional control, from local debates over academic freedom to national issues of social justice. Especially noteworthy are the transformations the school has undergone since 1960: the "James Lawson affair," where the divinity school faculty resigned over the expulsion of an African American graduate student who was organizing local lunch counter sit-ins; the impact of social change on the school since the late 1960s; and the contributions of women and African Americans, including their appointment to the faculty. ... Product Description
The latest cycle of national educational critiques and reforms has created an interest in gaining historical leverage on teacher education. With a broad audience in mind, Professor Allison provides a case study of the work of teacher educators in the academy and the "field." He critically examines educationists' scholarship, status in the university, service to school and teachers, and impulse to engage in social reform. This is the first book-length study of the history of teacher education in the South. ... Read more

Middle Tennessee State University Students
Tell It Like It Is

What is it that attracts thousands of students to MTSU every year?

Davis Market, across from campus on the corner of Main Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard, is believed by some to be the center of the universe. Due to the alleged magnetic pull from the center of the universe, it is said that once you enter the store, you ll never be able to move from Murfreesboro.

Or maybe it s not just magnetism that reels students in.... What else does this large university in rural middle Tennessee have to offer? Find out by reading the College Prowler guide to MTSU. It s chock full of facts, statistics, advice, stories, and insider information from the real MTSU experts the students!

What are the students saying about life at MTSU?
I m not a big fan of Murfreesboro, but I really do like MTSU. I like the people I ve met here, and it s been a good experience. I think I m where I need to be.
During the week, the atmosphere in this town is much like at any large university. On the weekends, however, the campus is very vacant due to students proximity to home.
There are a lot of restaurants in Murfreesboro. You can go anywhere, and most of them are good.
MTSU is in theory a dry campus, but you can walk across the back of Greek Row and find boxes of empty beer bottles.
Varsity sports are not as big as they should be, but we re improving that.

Learn what else the students can tell you! Find out if MTSU truly has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

Read our Middle Tennessee State University guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for four years.

Discover if MTSU is Right For You.

College guides written by students for students.

Your ultimate source for honest, unbiased information, College Prowler delivers an inside look at the top colleges and universities in the United States. While writing our series of college guides, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university.

We think it s important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any college campus that s why we intend to publish information about all aspects of a particular college, even the terrible parts you wouldn t find in a campus brochure. While we do keep an eye out for the occasional extremist the cheerleader or the cynic we take pride in letting the college students tell it like it is. We strive to create a college guide that s as representative as possible of each particular campus. Our guides cover both the good and the bad, and whether the survey responses point to recurring trends or varying opinions, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

When reading our guides and looking at our college rankings, keep in mind that every college is different and that the students who make up each college are not uniform as a result, it is important to assess colleges on a case-by-case basis. Because it s impossible to summarize an entire college with a single number or description, each guide provides a dialogue, not a decision, that s made up of 20 different topics and hundreds of student quotes. In the end, we hope that this guide will serve as a valuable tool in your college selection process. Enjoy! ... Read more
