Product Description
Richard English argues here that the post-9/11 War on Terror has spectacularly failed and that we now need a radically new approach to dealing with international terrorism. Recent policies have ignored the lessons of the past, and Terrorism: How to Respond seeks to remedy this lack of vision by looking at the long history of terrorism and assessing why such violence emerges, how it is sustained, and--most crucially of all--how and why it ends.

Written by an historian who has long studied Irish terrorism and politics, this book argues that we cannot adequately respond to the practical challenge of terrorist violence around the world unless we are more honest about the precise nature of the phenomenon, and about explaining its true and complex causes. Drawing on first-hand research into terrorist organizations, Richard English offers an authoritative and accessible analysis of arguably the most urgent political problem of the twenty-first century--and how we can successfully respond to it. ... Product Description

This edited volume provides a window on the many forces that structure and shape why women and girls participate in terrorism and militancy, as well as on how states have come to view, treat, and strategize against them.

Females who carry out terrorist acts have historically been seen as mounting a challenge to the social order by violating conventional notions of gender and power, and their participation in such acts has tended to be viewed as being either as a passive victim or a feminist warrior. This volume seeks to move beyond these portrayals, to examine some of the structuring conditions that play a part in a girl or woman’s decision to commit violence. Amidst the contextual factors informing her involvement, the volume seeks also to explore the political agency of the female terrorist or militant. Several of the articles are based on research where authors had direct contact with female terrorists or militants who committed acts of political violence, or with witnesses to such acts.

Product Description
Suicide attacks are the definitive form of terrorism. More than any other terrorist tactic, they convey the ruthless willingness of present day terrorists to kill themselves for killing others. Since September 11, 2001 the number of suicide attacks around the world has risen dramatically, causing on average far more fatalities per attack than other forms of terrorism.

What drives a person to kill himself for killing others, in the name of a political or religious cause? This book is the first to report a series of studies in which failed suicide bombers and organizers of suicide attacks were subjected to systematic clinical psychological interviews and tests and were compared to non-suicide terrorists. This direct psychological examination enabled a first-hand assessment of the personality characteristics and motivation of suicide bombers. Additional interviews conducted by seasoned area specialists provided a comprehensive picture of the ways by which the suicide bombers were recruited, prepared and dispatched to their planned death, as well as how they felt and behaved along this road. This information was supplemented by data derived from interviews with the families of suicide bombers who died carrying out their attacks.

The psychological makeup of suicide terrorists is put into context in other chapters of the book, so as to provide an inclusive understanding of this phenomenon, which takes into account public atmosphere and the ways in which terrorist groups influence the suicide candidates. The book examines the characteristics of suicide terrorists in light of the most influential theories of suicide and offers a critical and innovative analysis of current explanations of suicide terrorism. ... Product Description

Guerrilla warfare is not just the tool of modern-day terrorists in the Middle East. Its roots stretch back to our very own revolution.

In Violent Politics, William R. Polk takes us on a concise, brilliant tour of insurgencies throughout history, beginning with America's own struggle for independence. Continuing on, Polk explores the role of insurgency in other notable conflicts—including the Spanish guerrilla war against Napoleon, the Irish struggle for independence, the Algerian War of National Independence, and Vietnam—eventually landing at the ongoing campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, where the lessons of this history are needed more than ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depressing but realistic
Violent Politics takes a depressing but realistic view that "hearts and minds" are the most important aspect of winning against an insurgency.Military efforts are usually too little (or too much) and too late, merely further alienating a population already traumatized by internal problems and insurgency.Such an analysis, if correct, does not bode well for US and Allied efforts in Afghanistan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, persuasive
Violent Politics is a survey of guerrilla wars or insurgent wars from the American revolution to Afghanistan. The author is a history professor and former State Department policy analyst. The book is clearly written from that point of view. A soldier would have written a different history of guerrilla wars. The book is well written; it reads like a book that had good editing and proof reading.

The thesis of Violent Politics is that the outcome of insurgent conflicts are mostly political with only a small military component. Polk references numbers: 80% political, 15% administrative and 5% military. This is supported by each of his examples. In fact he barely references the military aspects of these conflicts.

Violent Politics is laid out in eleven chapters each covering a specific conflict. Each chapter provides a brief survey of the history, politics and the progression of the guerilla war it covers. This also includes the ethnic and religious context in each case. Another interesting aspect is the outside assistance that the various insurgencies received. There is some discussion of the size of forces involved and of the weapons they had. That is usually the extent of the military information.

The authoritative factual tone of the first eleven chapters is abandoned in the Conclusion where the author discusses Americas current engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here the author sounds like any other left wing pundit. While I generally agree with the sentiment, it was not in line with the rest of the book.

I found the author persuasive that politics is the most important aspect in an insurgency. Unfortunately that leaves the occupier or outside force with very little chance of success. The author provides no advice on how to conduct such a war. Clearly the author thinks we should just not get involved in them; I don't think that is realistic. In particular the author seems to think America has no chance in either Iraq or Afghanistan.

This well written book is informative and provides much new information and perspective on an important topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Education
This book offers further proof that those who don't understand history are destined to repeat itIt is a comprehensive and clear discussion of the history of insurgency from the American Revoloution through the current mess in Iraq.I think of it as an education in one book.I found the history of the troubles in Ireland especially enlightening.Anyone who can continue to defend our incursions into Vietnam and Iraq after reading this book is delusional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Violent Politics: A History of Insurgency, Terrorism ...
An extraordinary review of the political history of terrorism from a master of the history and culture of the middle east.

3-0 out of 5 stars Original, Even if Slightly Muddled
With its accurate, and some obscure not-known-by-the-common man (and therefore very interesting) history on insurgencies, rebellions, their causes and effects, and the like, /Violent Politics/ is amazing. However, though it may be correct with its facts, and though it may have some interesting facts, the overall message seems to have something missing.

It's not to say that /Violent Politics/ or Mr. Polk draws an incorrect conclusion, however, that conclusion leaves something to be desired. It seems rushed and a bit incomplete; had it been more thoroughly covered it could have been groundbreaking. ... Read more

Product Description

Ruth Stein's pioneering study explains suicidal terrorism from a psychoanalytic perspective. She argues that most Islamic extremists undertake destructive and self-destructive actions not out of blind hatred, nor even for political gain, but to achieve an explosive merger with a transcendent awesome Father, God. The extremist is thus motivated more by his love for God than his hatred of the infidel. The contemporary Islamic terrorist kills "God's enemies" to express his intoxication with and complete submission to the God-idea. Stein further shows that this same leitmotif of filial submission and sacrifice runs through patriarchal monotheism in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough first idea over the subject
It offers to the reader a thorough view over the subject giving consice articles concerning the different aspects of the issue. It is easy reading and you will not feel boring.

3-0 out of 5 stars overpriced
The book is very overpriced at $165. But it does contain timely discussions of how cyber warfare might be conducted. Some chapters are at the high level of how cyber warface could be another form of actual warfare. But other chapters are really not about cyber warfare but about different types of malware or activities on the internet. To some extent, the book has been padded out, relative to its title.

For example, there is a chapter on steganography. "Steg". Explaining what it is and how to (try to) detect it. Technically quite accurate. Invariably, discussions about cyber warfar and terrorism mention steg. It's quite dramatic. But the reader should keep in mind that thus far, steg is one of these phenomena that is more conjectured than real. While certainly steg is possible, there have been relatively few cases of actual, non-trivial steg encoded messages or webpages. Sure, terrorists might be using it. But outside spy novels, how much so?

Another example are the mentions of phishing, interspersed through various chapters. By no stretch of the imagination can this be construed as cyber warfare or terrorism. Phishing is a scam for monetary gain. The way the book includes this is by suggesting that terrorists could finance themselves via phishing. Again, this is possible. But also a stretch. ... Product Description
This new Understanding treatise provides a compact review of the three main approaches to combating terrorism: criminal proceedings, intelligence and prevention, and military action. The three modes of responses are not the same; each has benefits and limitations, and it will be difficult to find the proper balance among them. Understanding the Law of Terrorism contributes to the search for balance by providing the tools for analysis and application of each of the three modes of response.? With regard to law enforcement, it covers the requirements of conspiracy law, the principal statutes dealing with terrorism, designation of foreign terrorist organizations, and the crime of material support of terrorist activity or organizations. It also goes into the international law dealing with crimes against humanity which could be a source of enforcement principles for terrorism.? On the intelligence front, the book deals with the structure of the Intelligence Community, the operation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and the mechanics of the Classified Information Procedure Act (CIPA).? With regard to military response, the book summarizes the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), delves into military detentions, extraordinary renditions, and harsh interrogation or torture. Finally, the book concludes with a look at the law of emergency situations and the degree to which ordinary processes of law may be suspended in times of crisis, looking at both U.S. and foreign cases.Throughout the book, there are references to the law of other nations and international law. There is also an Appendix with the principal U.S. statutes, the major international conventions and treaties, and the relevant U.S. executive orders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wake up call to all Americans
Before 9-11 This Book might not be looked at the same way it is today. Black Ice :The Invisible Threat of Cyber Terrororism brings around many misconceptions why an attack on our most important infrastructure could be carried out by Terrorists and not an Impossibilty. While This Book deals mostly with What if Scenerios, It also makes you think of things you thought were impossible. Take for example the sophistication of Hacking and Breaking into Our most Vital Systems. Terrorists know you must have training at a very high level and will Train Them at Schools in the U.S. Itself. Sound Familiar?
That's the sought of future thinking that this book will have you turning page after page and many ways o limit or stop a future attack on the internet. A great book with insightful information.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is not about the author
I have read this book and the reviews on Amazon.com.The author makes a good argument for enhanced cyber security in the USA.This is an issue that will be ignored by policy makers and the general public until an attack makes people pay attention to the realities of a computer controlled civilization. While other reviewers blast the writing style and hypothetical situations in the book it seems they have missed the point. It is not if a devastating cyber attack will occur, it is when.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Look at the State of Infrastructure Security
Dan Verton, journalist and author of The Hacker Diaries: Confessions of Teenage Hackers, has written a very enlightening book in Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism.

The book begins with a fictitious attack that is multi-faceted and very well orchestrated. While it is somewhat sensationalist or alarmist, the point of the story is to show what is possible- not probable. Verton illustrates how cyber-attacks against key communications and critical infrastructure sites can be used in conjunction with conventional attacks to maximize the ensuing damage and confusion.

After capturing your attention with the story of what could be, Verton goes on to describe various government and private sector studies and disaster-preparedness exercises that have proven time and time again what a fragile state the infrastructure is in and how the domino effect of one area can cascade to take out entire regions.

One of the main points of the book is to show how the critical infrastructure is inter-dependent. If a main gas pipeline is destroyed, electrical power plants lose their source of energy. Once the electricity is shut down the telephone, cell phone, Internet and many other industries will shut down. Water treatment facilities will not be able to function. The list goes on and on.

This is an enlightening book that everyone should read. It is important for the powers that be to understand this domino effect and take steps to protect against cyber-terrorism of this sort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific, high-quality investigative journalism
Without a doubt a book of monumental importance to the nation during this time of war and increased threat from terrorism. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in homeland security and how terrorism may be changing and evolving its strategy against the U.S.

Well-written, full of intrigue and first-hand interviews with top security officials from both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Verton had unfettered access to those directly involved in the Sept. 11 response, including Richard Clarke.

You will not find another book on this subject that is this well researched and written. And because Verton is a journalist, he wrote this book so that you don't have to be a computer expert to understand the issues.

Buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page Turner That Kept Me Reading
This guy is among the best tech journalists out there and this book is proof. Nobody has documented the cyber-terrorist threat like this. And from the negative comments I've seen here on Amazon it is clear that those people didn't read the book or care to acknowledge the compelling nature of the argument.

If you're blind to the future, you won't be interested in reading this book or giving it any credit, and that's probably par for the course for you.

But if you are an independent thinker who understands the nature of the terrorist threat, you will want to read this book and you will undoubtedly benefit and learn something from it. ... Read more

Product Description
"The war on terrorism is the first political growth industry of the new Millennium."So begins Jim Bovard's newest and, in some ways, most provocative book as he casts yet another jaundiced eye on Washington and the motives behind protecting "the homeland" and prosecuting a wildly unpopular war with Iraq. For James Bovard, as always, it all comes down to a trampling of personal liberty and an end to privacy as we know it. From airport security follies that protect no one to increased surveillance of individuals and skyrocketing numbers of detainees, the war on terrorism is taking a toll on individual liberty and no one tells the whole grisly story better than Bovard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
James Bovard's "Lost Rights" was very influential in the formation of my political ideology, yet after 9/11 I fell into the trap he repeatedly decries in "Terrorism and Tyranny": to trust with more power the government whose bureaucratic incompetence failed to avert 9/11 with the power it had in the first place.

Anyone sick of the current political debate in this country, polarized between Leftists who believe America is evil and conservatives who think it is divine and immune from criticism, ought to read this book. Bovard stakes out the middle, libertarian, ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bush's crusade.
This book is the best, most complete book on the subject of recent American foreign policy and the war on terror. A keen critique on Bush's domestic policy also.
Mr. Bovard goes back in history to the Reagan era and the first war on terror.
Following that up with the first Bush's double-crossing of Saudi Arabia when U.S. troops remained there after the Iraq-Kuwait conflict. This has served as motivation for terrorists.
From pages 39 and 40-"In 1996 the government of Sudan offered to sieze bin Laden and turn him over to the U.S. government for prosecution."
"Maj.Gen.Elfaith Erwa, the Sudanese defense minister, warned U.S.officials that if bin Laden was not taken into custody,he would go to Afghanistan.Erwa told the Wahington Post shortly after 9/11 that the high-ranking U.S. official replied 'let him go to Afghanistan.'"
These quotes highlight the prevalent incompetence of the Clinton administration when they blew an oppurtunity. Along those lines,Mr. Bovard gave some details about "Operation Infinite Reach" where the Clintons showed that they could bomb a pharmaceutical factory.

This author does an excellent job of exposing the dangers to citizens from the PATRIOT ACT. Freedom is being sacrificed in the war on terror. The Carnivore intelligence gathering system is a chilling component used to spy on Americans' internet usage, particularly e-mail.

I found his material on John Ashcroft almost humorous! The former A.G touts the F.B.I's history of "protecting civil rights and civil liberties for all Americans" while being either ignorant of or oblivious to the infamous COINTELPRO program that actually violated those liberties and rights!

The Bush domestic policy can best be explained by looking at his(and the Republican party's)two biggest campaign contributors. That would be Exxon-Mobil and Enron!

"Bush's views on forcibly spreading freedom and democracy resemble a religious crusade."-page 324. I hadn't thought of it that way, but I think the statement is accurate.

If you are looking for an outstanding book on the subjects of foreign policy and the war on terror and it's history, I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MASTER OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM
I have read all of James Bovard's books and consider James the most thorough objective investigative journalist on the planet. His LOST RIGHTS, FREEDOM IN CHAINS, THE FAIR TRADE FRAUD, FEELING OUR PAIN, THE BUSH BETRAYAL, and latest ATTENTION DEFICIT DEMOCRACY are superb and should be used as a prioritized list of problems for immediatethink tank task force action and solution. Every collectivist socialist on the planet hates James Bovard with a passion which in my view, rates Jim 10 Stars, not 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist Trash - Supoorts Child Murder
Quote for the "book":

"When you see the photos of corpses of young children being dragged from the Qana, Lebanon rubble, remember: These are not human beings. These are terrorists."

If you think this is literarture, you're as sick as Bovard.

---a zero star rating and a waste of worthless federal reserve notes

4-0 out of 5 stars Researchexcellentbut some sources of "wisdom"questionable
James Bovard is a bestselling libertarian author and lecturer, whose political commentary targets examples of governmental waste, failures, and abuses of power.
His Books:
The Fair Trade Fraud (1992)
Lost Rights (1995)
Shakedown (1996)
FREEDOM IN CHAINS: THE RISE OF THE STATE AND THE DEMISE OF THE CITIZEN (2000) Just finished this book and it is filled with examples of the "Statist" (politicians and bureaucrats) extorting money to facilitate their appetite for power and thus controlling as many aspects of life in these "United States"(separation into red and blue states does not make much difference). The research is excellent and the sources of "wisdom" are unrivaled. The EEOC and EPA appear to be the most outrageous of bureaus but closely followed by HUD and others; however, the Supreme Court clearly wins the "stuck on stupid" award between the three branches and the Senate is a clear choice in the Congress. Much of what Mr. Bovard relates is probably well known by the average political savvy reader, but his ability to back up his message with research, i.e. facts and sagacious quotes makes for an excellent read. Still, as one other reader stated, "What exactly can be done with the current apathy and addiction to the Welfare State by so many voters?". An excellent 5 star book.
FEELING YOUR PAIN: THE EXPLOSION AND ABUSE OF GOVERNMENT IN THE CLINTON-GORE YEARS(2001) An excellent recap of what the pervert, his enabler wife and a cast of spinners cum sycophants "got away with" during a low point for the country rivalled only by the Johnson and Carter year. The Nixon years were not that great either asthe 60s crowd, along with their "start, cut and run" Democrat friends, began to take over the country, after Watergate. Clinton and Hillary certainly lived up to their ''60s elite lawyer promise after practicingcrooked law/politics in Arkansas. As Bovard tells the story in his book, the Clintons set new records in corruption while conning their enemies and receiving unwavering support from their Democrat allies and the media! A 5 star for the details of the crimes already known.
****TERRORISM AND TYRANNY: TRAMPLING FREEDOM, JUSTICE, AND PEACE TO RID THE WORLD OF EVIL(2003) Anyone who read the two books above is bound to be a bit disappointed with this one;however, it is well written but seems to emphasize Bovard's libertarian roots too much for my taste. The topic is also a bit tough for a libertarian as they are creatures of "no government". National defense is not their bag and especially dealing with a threat on home turf.Civil rights and street radical will love to find out they were mistreated by their government even more than they thought. Bovard pull out all the stops in relating the excesses of big government spying and some of his sources such as Vermont Senator (who leaks intelligence), the ACLU and other "acronyms" appear to border on conjecture at times. Probably a 4 star mostly for the facts among too much philosophy, questionable sources of "wisdom" and "privacy" nonsense.
The Bush Betrayal (2004)
Quotes:
"Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner." (1994). This is my favorite and another version could be a jackass (Dems) and an elephant (Republicans) fighting over "hay" (tax receipts) that does not belong to them. They then give some back to the "original owners" (taxpayers) after eating their "fill" (outrageous retirements, perks, etc.) and providing some to their "herd" (special interests).
