Product Description
Why thyroid hormones are often an ineffective approach to hypothyroidism, what the real culprit is, and why it won't show up on your blood test.

Do you take thyroid hormones, yet still suffer from fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, or other hypothyroid symptoms? Are your symptoms steadily worsening while your blood tests stay the same? Do your symptoms go untreated because your lab tests are normal?

If so, join the millions of Americans who, despite normal test results, suffer low thyroid symptoms because they are misdiagnosed or poorly managed. As you'll learn, treating the thyroid is often ineffective, and can even make you worse. For most Americans, hypothyroidism is an immune disease, not a thyroid disease. And yet the standard of care for hypothyroidism, both in conventional and alternative medicine, is to treat the thyroid, when it is the immune system that must be the target.

Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When My Lab Tests Are Normal? will also teach you an additional six common patterns of low thyroid function (expanded to 22 in the last chapter), only one of which may be helped by thyroid hormones, if even then.

Don't waste another day feeling lousy because you're trapped in outdated standards of health care. Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When My Lab Tests Are Normal? harnesses cutting-edge scientific research for a safe, simple, and truly effective solution to low thyroid function. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most informative book
Almost two years ago I was, finally, diagnosed with Celiac .I say finally, as for most of my life I had struggled with depression, fatigue, various stomach issues, etc. My Homeopathic Dr. diagnosed me and shortly thereaftersaid I had Hashimotos also. This, for me,was a result of spending too many years as an undiagnosed Celiac -an autoimmune disease that can attack the thyroid.

.It was a lot to take in, but Dr. Kharrazian's book really helped to explain so much of what was going on in my body in regard to my poor, overwhelmed thyroid gland ..... and more.
Not only is this book very informative, but it gave me a positive way to look at the problem and hope for my future. There is just so much you can retain when you are at the Dr.'s office and this book answers a lot of the questions you might have forgotten to ask or didn't even know to ask. But, you must realize that the majority of "conventional" Dr.'s are so not on the same page and you might have to hunt around for a Dr., to work with you, who would be open to the information in Dr. Kharrazian's Book. In any case, after reading this book, you now know a lot more about what has been troubling you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This guy just wrote about my life story of Hashimoto's on Amazon!!
I wholeheartedly recommend this book.Imagine my jaw dropping to the ground when I realized that the thyroid disease was separate from the autoimmune disease. For the past twenty or more years I have had doctors continuously test for Lupus, MS, and numerous other autoimmune diseases as I vehemently told them it was so much more than just the thyroid involved.I have literally spent thousands of dollars chasing a phantom that had already been diagnosed roughly seven years prior. Yes, doctors tested for thyroid for years telling me that it wasn't my problem until one doctor finally tested for autoimmune thyroid disease!Anyway, after reading this book and deciding to give it it a try since he seemed to describe my problem exactly, I noticed a difference in symptoms within three days.Within a week other symptoms were fading such as arthritis, hair falling out and a loss of water weight. It has now been almostfour weeks and I have more energy and feel as if I can think clearer and am once again feeling like I want pick up doing my art, knitting and exercise, etc. In other words, this book has given me my life back!

5-0 out of 5 stars Does this science hold water?
I read and re-read this stimulating book. The hope and excitement of such healthy breakthroughs in thyroid treatment felt like a fun treasure hunt.
My fun ended when I found a local chiropractor, who trained with the author, gave me two free appointments and then offered to treat me for $7,000 for three months or $12,000 for a year!
Wow, looks like I will stick with my meds, gluten free mostly, watch my booze intake, and continue with acupuncture.

4-0 out of 5 stars I recommend it.
I read lots of articles by the best doctors and scientistsabout hashimoto thyroiditisand this is the first book I would recommend everyone who suffers from FOOD INTOLERANCE, to food allergies to read... I didn't know my BAD DIGESTION system would lead me to hashimoto thyroiditis..However, I don't know much about his products to able to recommend.I am not yet willing to trust in a chiropractor to treat my autoimmune systembut the book gives you clues that you can help yourself and slowly find ways to feel better. I was diagnostic with positive TPO last year and I am not in any thyroid hormone. Taking care of your immune system and thyroid will be a lifetimecommitment. Well, enjoy your readings and take care of yourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a book, simply self-promotion
The book has 316 pages. However, the index is 22 pages and the footnotes for the chapters are 20 pages (with many duplicates). The "References for Nutritional Compounds" are 46 pages, with another 32 pages of footnotes. There's also a glossary. You're left with 188 pages of "content".In that, there were at least 18 "testimonials", discussing anectodal results for specific patients by various practitioners "trained by Dr. Kharrazian".

Despite his putative credentials in "Human Nutrition", Dr. Kharrazian prefaces the Nutritional Compounds section with the statement: "The Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated the statements below. These compounds are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."Nice legaleze to CYA for a supposed nutritional expert.

There is NOTHING in the book that outlines an approach that you, a hypothyroid sufferer, could follow to improve your condition. The goal is to drive you to an alternative medicine practitioner who has trained with Dr. Kharrazian.

It was obvious in reading the book that 1. Dr. Kharrazian is aiming to increase attendance at his seminars, and 2. He is also promoting various "nutritional compounds" that will make you better (but legally aren't intended to treat, cure or prevent disease).

I have trouble seriously accepting advice where the advisor will profit if I take his advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book everyone caring for their health shoud read
This book is the BEST book I read in a long time. Such an excellent compilation of all the best advice around on weight management, healthy eating habits, how to face life with a hopeful outlook having thyroid problems. It's certainly a book for everybody wanting to get the most out of their diet and life style, it's not just for us people with thyroid problems. It sums up in a great easy-yet-thorough manner what it means to be healthy, what it takes to get there and to stay like that. I am utterly thankful. It's giving me life-long answers to life-long problems I face since I have a memory. I totally recommend this book and all other material from this author to anybody having problems of weight, of course, but if specially this is linked with other symptoms like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, mood swings, difficulties focusing, etc... If you have these symptoms, and you don't know if you may have a thyroid disfunction, do get a checkup, but do get this book and start to read now. I wish I had this book in my hands 20 years ago (and I am only 31). I am utterly thankful. It's changing my life and my way of understanding my body and my whole world.

1-0 out of 5 stars No plan in this "plan"
I purchased this book because I was looking for something that gave clear information on steps I can take on my own to help address my hypothyroidism. Don't let the subtitle of this book fool you; there is no "plan" in this book. While it does contain an enormous amount of scientific information, it doesn't have anything new and isn't easy to get useful information from. For someone like me who knows they have hypothyroidism, but has not been treated for awhile because of health insurance issues, there is nothing of use. Since there is no "plan" I am left relying on my existing knowledge -- with one heck of a paperweight in this book. It's not good for much else.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Thyroid Solution
I bought this book because I had a feeling that I wasn't being told everything I needed to know about my thyroid condition by my general practitioner, as it turned out I was right.

The book is very informative, but a bit repetitious.I'm glad I bought it as it prompted me to go to an endocrinologist who is now alleviating many of my symptoms that my general practitioner pretty much made me feel was just in my head, obviously going to find a new general m.d.

I recommend this book to anyone that's just been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, or if you just feel "not yourself."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Thyroid Solution
good book, although after I bought I found out that I did not have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Thyroid Solution
Some of the terminology was difficult to understand, or required me to do some research then re-read that section, but overall it was interesting and pertinent to my situation. It has helped me in my discussions with my physicians.

Product Description

From New York Times bestselling author and nationally recognized patient advocate Mary J. Shomon comes a groundbreaking guide to safely managing menopause through a better understanding of and better care for your thyroid.

If you're one of the forty million American women struggling through menopause, you probably know all about the symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, and depression. But what you may not know is that the drop in reproductive hormones frequently triggers a thyroid slowdown—a "thyropause"—that can be the main cause for those troublesome symptoms. In fact, you may not even need hormone therapy, wild yam and progesterone creams, or herbs like black cohosh for a symptom-free menopause. What you really need is to begin to pay attention to your thyroid.

In The Menopause Thyroid Solution, Mary J. Shomon will help you:

  • Recognize the symptoms of a thyroid problem versus those of menopause
  • Learn how to get your problems diagnosed and treated
  • Find out what and how to eat, what medications to consider, what supplements to take, and what lifestyle changes to make
  • Improve your metabolism and increase your energy

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Everyday Woman
This book is good information for anyone. It is loaded with common sense to be applied for any woman. Men, husbands, fathers will like reading it too. The book will help explain mystical oddities that seem to happen to women only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the hormone debates...
Mary Shomon clearly lays out the issues concerning the latest information, belief systems and science concerning hormones in the aging body. I have been interested in this topic for nearly 15 years...when I first heard John R. Lee, MD speak on progesterone. As an early pioneer who treated women with severe osteoporosis with ProGest, he discovered that, indeed, these women could rebuild bone!Since then, I have continued to read what I could find on the Internet about bioidentical hormones. Never sure which physicians to trust, I went without hormones. As John Lee, MD first pointed out...the lack of studies on bioidentical hormone replacement versus synthetic hormones is due to the money that the pharmeceuticals make from their own patents. However, when physicians who are well educated read the studies that do exist, they, too begin to believe in the importance of testing and supplementing the body with needed hormones. What an impact on one's quality of life!Read this book...it is written in layman's terms. It's very helpful because it empowers you to have a meaningful conversation with your physician. If your physician can't respond, give him/her a copy!!! Ultimately, you must know your own body, how it functions and what symptoms you have. It's a big responsibility to take on but it's so worth it.Ignorance is NOT bliss!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Menopause Thyroid Solution: Overcome Menopause by Solving Your Hidden Thyroid Problems
This book is excellent.Whether you have had thyroid problems for years or newly diagnosed, this book will help you understand both thyroid problems and menopause problems and how they are sometimes intertwined.I have had thyroid problems for almost 3 decades and still learned many things about thyroid that I simply never knew.I highly recommed this book for all women - young or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly helpful info for women (and those who love them) of "a certain age"
Mary Shomon has once again given some truly helpful thyroid information, this time for women "of a certain age." And, boy, can thyroid woes combined with perimenopause/menopause give many of us a one-two punch! It is so unfortunate that many doctors do not put all endocrine information together - thyroid issues AND menopause (!) - yet Mary has connected many dots and gives a wide range of well-researched information and suggestions in a balanced, holistic approach that includes everything from understanding how ALL hormones connect, nutrition, possible supplements, types of hormonal testing, the gamut of hormonal treatments available, exercise suggestions, and many alternative approaches. After reading this wonderful book, perimenopausal/menopausal women will have enough information to discuss a variety of options with health care providers to address their symptoms as well as empowering women to look beyond just what their providers know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information
In the Menopause Thyroid Solution Mary explains how the various endocrine systems overlap and influence each other. Women of all ages will benefit from the information and suggestions presented in this innovative book. Grounded in solid research and loaded with tips from some of the top experts in the field, Mary's latest book makes a perfect addition to any thyroid home library. ... Read more

Depressed, overworked, or just feelin' old are common enough complaints. But when disparate symptoms such as joint pain, weight gain, andfoggy-headedness join the ranks, it's time to think thyroid. As the"throttle" for the body's energy hormones, the thyroid affects every organand cell; when it's in trouble, any variety of ailments--physical andmental--can occur. Trouble is, physicians are more likely to treat eachsymptom independently, with pill upon pill, rather than search for a rootcause. Bolstered by 25 years of treating patients with low thyroidcondition, husband-and-wife team Richard L. Shames, M.D., and Karilee H.Shames, R.N., Ph.D., ably explain the physical and emotional profiles ofthose diagnosed with the disease, why the proverbial deck is stackedagainst them, and how each patient can forge an effective path oftreatment.

"Consider Thyroid Power a long, personal visit with a caring,prevention-oriented practitioner," state the authors. The journey beginswith thyroid basics: how this little hormone-producing tissue operates, signs that things are amiss, how other illnesses compound the problem, andhow to determine one's risk for hypothyroidism. Next, the Shameses discussthe labyrinth of diagnostic and treatment issues a patient must endure.Helpful and harmful supplements and environmental factors, repairing theimmune system (the origin of thyroid troubles), and a rich, sensitiveexploration of holistic healing nicely round out this valuable resource. Abrief section titled "Show This to Your Doctor," penned by Richard, perfectly crystallizes the book and provides an effective tool forinitiating a patient/physician dialogue. --Liane Thomas ... One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yetmost don't realize the mental and emotional components of thiscondition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden sufferingthat many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book toprovide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promisesauthor Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at BaylorCollege of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at BenTaub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains thelink between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalanceaffects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to copewith the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarilystrike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, suchas infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrualsyndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealingwith treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapsesand depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroidhealth, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent casestudies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, andquestionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier tocheck the medical information against your own situation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Arem Advocate
I found Dr. Arem through a friend of mine here in Houston, Texas. I began seeing Dr. Arem approx 11/08. He is a gentle man with an amazing sense of quiet compassion and
high intellect. I have struggled with Hashimoto Thyroiditis and Epstein-Barr for some time now (years), but never knew that so many parts of the body could be affected in so many ways.
Over the course of my 51 yr life, I have wondered why I felt certain things. After reading his book THE THYROID SOLUTION, I was so relieved to learn why I might have been feeling
the depression, mood swings, pms issues, anxiety and I always tried to examine why I experienced these things for seemingly no reason.
I learned and am still learning just how intricate not only the thyroid is, but the body as a whole and how the thyroid works so closely with the brain's chemistries, which in turn, affect the entire body. I have always also been atuned to body/mind health and nutrition, but never realized the thyroid could have so much to do with everything I was feeling from fatigue to hormonal issues. Dr. Arem is an amazing author, doctor and advocate for all of us suffering with a miriad of disorders and I thank him with all of my heart for supporting women, especially, everywhere. I encourage you all to read his book and if you can, visit Dr. Arem as a patient.

Product Description

Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the U.S. The terminology framework described in this book is an important advance in the field of cytopathology. It is a brainchild of the multidisciplinary National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of The Science Conference, held in Bethesda, MD in October, 2007. This book will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It will serve as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Thyroid FNA is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule. In the past, ambiguous and inconsistent diagnostic criteria and terminology have hampered sample interpretation and patient management. It is hoped that, by bringing together national and international thyroid experts from diverse disciplines, the book will achieve its goal: to provide the reader with a generously illustrated and user-friendly reference on this unified approach to thyroid diagnostic criteria and reporting. The book will succinctly summarize and illustrate the salient points in the diagnosis of the non-neoplastic and neoplastic thyroid diseases. The chapters will be set up as follows: 1. Background, 2. Criteria, 3. Explanatory Notes, and 4. Sample reports.

The development of the Bethesda System for Thyroid FNA parallels the development of the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, which was also the result of an NCI-sponsored multidisciplinary conference. Now in its 2nd edition (Solomon and Nayar, 2004, Springer), "The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology" revolutionized the reporting of Pap test results. Virtually every cytopathology laboratory in the U.S. (and a large number overseas) uses the Bethesda System for reporting Pap test results and thus owns at least one copy of the book. The new terminology has already received much attention in the planning of upcoming national and international meetings. We expect that the Bethesda System for thyroid FNA will have the same effect in transforming, unifying, and improving the reporting of thyroid FNA results as its sister publication did for Pap testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treating the Epidemic
Yes this book is timely but it does not address the solutions we as physicians can not practice in our current health care model. As physicians in practice the system as well as the pateare forced to treat symptoms and that is what created the epidemic in the first place. It is the short sited use of medicating our patients, overuse of antibiotics, ignoring clear signals of serious progressive disease to use palliative treatment for cost saving and expediency that got us here in the first place. It's a numbers game treat the patient quick, don't do extensive lab tests to truly understand the syndrome.

I dropped out of that model years ago and now can stop the insanity. Examine, understand, treat and retest monthly if necessary - until I'm able to slow or reverse the progression of these syndromes. In order to do this I now work for my patient not their insurance companies, yes I see a lot less numbers but I can go to bed at night knowing the patients are responding within months even weeks. The sad part of this is those millions and millions of patients without proper treatment lose cognitive function so they can't complain or picket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism four years ago. For the most part I thought it was under control, I had no idea the health problems I was having were related to the thyroid.
I first got this book on a two week loan from our local library. It is so full of wonderful information that I decided I need my own copy.
It explains all your glands and hormones and how they relate to your thyroid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thyroid book I've ever read
This is the book I wish was around when I first started having thyroid problems. It thoroughly and simply explains thyroid function, disease processes, and the interaction of hormones. The book touches on the common and obscure symptoms related to thyroid disease, and explains treatment options.

This is an excellent book of information about a Thyroid condition.I inherited this condition from My Mother but did not understand my symptoms or what was happening to my body. The only thing the doctor did was put me on Synthroid and check my Blood. No information whatsoever.
This even gives a person information on how to get free testing if you have no insurance, It explains what kind of blood tests you need as well as explaining everything your Thyroid controls.I have realized that the health problems I have been experiencing since my early 30's have been all related to my Low Thyroid condition.Amazing book!!I applaud it and recommend it highly. Thanks! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good information
Item as promissed. Fast e-mail & shipping. Well Packed. Honest seller. Will recommend. A+ Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars complete and comprehensive!
i thought this book was one of the most comprehensive ones on the market. it was very helpful....i only gave it 4 stars b/c it was a little bit technical, but the author explains things pretty well. wish it had pictures or illustrations (well, had some but maybe a bit more lay-man type drawings? but overall i'd really recommend this book for anyone with a thyroid problem, he starts with the basics: diagnosis, then treatment, symptoms, alternative therapies, experimental therapies, things you can do at home, etc. highly recommended, can't imagine you'd need another book on thyroid probs if you have this one, kinda the 'thyroid bible' so to speak.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
I was very disappointed in this book.If I could give 1/2 star to a negative star I would.I have had thyroid problems for the past 10 years and within the past 6-12 months it has started to act up.I try to keep myself informed with the latest information on health issues.I had bought Rosenthal's book, "The Thyroid Sourcebook" which wasunhelpful; so I thought since this book that has a medical doctor helping her write it

I felt mislead by the term 'sourcebook'.If you know you have thyroid disorder(s), this book is a waste of time.I felt this book was very confusing and almost contradicting. They try to be helpful and sympathetic, but then they come back and make it seem you are not do all you can, or basically that it's your fault. For the weight gain in hypothyroidism all you need to do is eat right and exercise otherwise you are lazy and it's your problem. Just work out (forget the fact that you are extremely tired). They don't account for other health issues such as adrenal, pituitary, etc. They don't really believe in using vitamin, minerals, and supplements. They believe the natural approach is a ripoff and a waste of time. They claim to have sympathy since Sara suffered with thyroid cancer and understands. They don't.It's the feeling if you don't get better from what they say, you aren't doing something right. It's all in your head.

Interestingly some of the 'myths' they claim, go against many other medical publications by thyroid specialists. That doesn't make sense to me.

I would say there are other and better books out there that give better tests, self evaluations to help you get a better understanding. This book in my opinion is a waste of time, money, hope you may have for help. This book only made me frustrated, angry, and irritated.Go look at "fat, fuzzy, frazzled." or "the thyroid solution."

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick to dismiss symptoms....
The book is well organized, and if I had thryoid cancer, I'm sure I would review it differently. However, it consistently harps that if your TSH is within normal range, you are not hypothyroid. I also states normal is different for each person, but does not tell people how to determine their personal normal. It goes on to say hypothyroidism has many symptoms of other disorders, but there is a huge void of what to do if your life is in fact non-stressful, or diet is already really good, and you don't drink or smoke, but still have symptoms. It feels like although the authors have a high degree of expertise, there is still a huge chunk of people left out of their scenario, people whom they "poo poo". There's more to this problem than they care to admit, and it is obvious by the holes that are left in the book itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book I can no longer read!
Good book as a reference! Purchased as an ebook in May 2006. Tried to access it recently and could not open it as Adobe has changed signatures. Moreover, Adobe says that it is ENTIRELY THE FAULT OF AMAZON. And, it is no longer available as an ebook even if I want to pay for it again. ..... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't read unless you are a doctor.
This book has such big words that only a doctor or expert in the medical field could understand. I wanted it to find out how my under active throid affects my sexual life and how it may affect getting pregnant. I could even disipher where in the book I would read about those topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This book is amazing! It seriously changed my life. It made me understand most of my health symptoms and problems are related to my throid disease. I wish someone would have told me all this years ago! This is thee best book out there and is so easy to read. I read it in two days because I just couldn't put it down. I am now armed with great questions for my new Endocrinologist!

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Admittedly this is a very thorough book, but as I am 66 years old, I would have liked to have know that this book is nearly exclusively meant for women in their childbearing years. This is not made clear as you may see from the title. This fixation became very irritating. Be careful before you buy it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fluoride as treatment?!
Did you know that fluoride has been used to treat hypERthyroidism?Makes it seem more important for people with Hypothyroidism to cut out fluoride when we can.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I borrowed this book from the library, and was very disappointed. Don't waste your money on this one - you can go to any allopathic (conventional) doctor and get the same limited information and ineffective treatment that this author recommends. Read "Stop the Thyroid Madness" or "The Thyroid Solution" for effective treatment options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative book
My mother recently had her thyroid removed due to cancer and this book has been a wonderful resource for her.She originally borrowed the book from her library and liked it so much that she wanted her own copy, which I bought her for Christmas. This is a great book with lots of valuable information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of crap book----she isn't even a doctor
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! If I could have given 0 or negative stars I would have. I regret buying this book. The author isn't even a medical doctor, do not be fooled by the PhD title. She basically tells you to go to the doctor, go on medication if you need, eat right and exercise; that's all you need to do. You should be fine and your weight should go back to normal.I've had thyroid problems for over 10 years and it's recently gone out of whack again, no amount of exercise I do, no matter how healthy I eat, the weight won't come off.As she puts it..."if you are one of the 'rare' cases where that doesn't work go see a specialist."I didn't buy the flippin' book to help for the one sentence that applies to me.She doesn't take in account for other health problems or medication/vitamin-supplement interactions. I would warn people "do not to buy this book," it's a waste of time, money, and emotion. She gives no hope and even states that holistic ways are a rip off and don't work. She supposedly had thyroid cancer, but has no empathy.Do not buy the book.I regret buying the book, I'd rather throw it away or donate than resell it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
This book is a must read for everyone.Even if you think you don't suffer from thyroid disorders, you need to read this book.In an age when so-called 'health' insurance companies are in control and doctors have their eyes on the money instead of the patient, you have to be your own advocate!Don't read if you struggle with hypochondrism but everyone else needs to read it and direct their own health!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview book on holistic approaches to thyroid disorders
Author David Brownstein is a board certified Medical Doctor and the director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI. This eye opening book is a relatively easy read for the thyroid patient as it gives an overview to Dr. Brownstein'sholistic approach in treating thyroid and other issues. Dr. Brownstein starts off by describing how his training in medical school was inadequate for dealing with thyroid issues. He was motivated and intrigued by Dr. Broada Barnses book"Hypothyroidism, the Unsuspected Illness".Dr. Barnes devoted a lifetime to researching and treating thyroid issues. This was apparently motivating enough for Brownstein to depart from practicing conventional allopathic medicine and take up a holistic and Functional medicine approach.

As a practitioner of functional medicine he uses western allopathic medicine as well as alternative approaches and encourages natural remedies to help the thyroid before prescribing hormones.. He digs and tries to find the root cause of the symptoms. He acknowledges that labs don't tell the whole story. He will not rely 100% on lab results as he looks at the patient's overall symptoms, personal and family history. He will use naturally desiccated thyroid hormones such as Amour or Nature-throid,if he feels the need. He offers a theory on the root cause of Hashimoto's diseasepointing to a deficiency of iodine and antioxidants. Currently mainstream medicine does not know the root cause for Hashimoto's.He points out, how can you adequately treat a condition when you don't know what is causing it.

Dr. Brownstein is a very big advocate of taking iodine in the form of Lugol or Iodoral(a mixture of iodine and iodide) for thyroid and many other disorders. This use of Iodine is very controversial as allopathic medicine believes that high dose supplementation of iodine may cause hypothyroidism, and may worsen Hashimoto's symptoms.Dr. Brownstein firmly stands behind his approach and backs it up with case histories and research done by Dr. Guy Abraham and others.

The book also talks about Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Coagulation disorders, diet, detoxing and other issues that may affect or look like a thyroid issue.

This is not a self help book but rather an overview to his holistic approach on treating thyroid disorders or what appears to be one. I recommend this book for anyone (patient or practitioner) wishing to learn alternative treatment approaches to conventional allopathic medicine.Dr. Brownstein maintains a website called [...].where you may learn more about the many conditions he has successfully treated. To learn more on the use of Iodine, see Dr. Brownstein's book, "Iodine, "Why you need it. Why you can't Live Without It".Also see Dr. Guy Abraham's website at [...] where many of his research papers are available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information- Finally someone listens to thyroid patients!
Very clear and consise information. For those in the medical field or really well knowledged about thyroid disorders, it may be a bit too simplistic but it was written for the nonmedical person so it is understandable. I found his theroies and suggestions very well thought out and finally offering an insight into the thyroid.
As a person who believes and follows naturopathic medicine I found his ideas on Armour Thyroid and Nature-Throid very helpful and gives the person with thyroid issues another tool to use in a constant battle against your body.
Thank you Dr Brownstein for your insights and research!

5-0 out of 5 stars full of knowledge, easy to read...
Dr Brownstein's book is terrific.the double spaced pages are easier to read. This books does an excellent job of giving you enough information to present your case to your doctor while asking for further testing. We knew enough that he finally said, "I don't have a problem with more/better testing."You would think doctors would be looking for answers to help their patients get well, but most just take their standardized answers, remind you that you are getting older, and give you more meds to throw at the symptoms. Dr. Brownstein gives all of the research and referance data for the medical professionals who want to have more knowledge as well as vitamins and minerals you can get for yourself that will help. It makes connections between what many would believe to be unrelated symptoms to see your body as one whole unit of life. A repeated saying in book ...doctors need to remember they are "treating a person, not a blood test."

5-0 out of 5 stars medical information

Product Description
From the authors of Thyroid Power (more than 60,000 copies in paperback sold) comes a practical, hands-on program for the fat, fuzzy, and frazzled among us to feel better fast

Long review: This book promotes the use of natural thyroid hormone in hypothyroid patients, which he defines as those whose metabolism is slower than it should be, rather than by expensive blood tests. He explains a method to monitor your metabolism, based on a 1000 calorie diet for 28 days. While the calculations are easier if you follow this plan (and you will lose more weight), he acknowledges that not everyone will be able to follow this and explains in Appx C how to do the test by monitoring calorie intake for 28 days.

His explanations of why he uses a metabolic function test rather than TSH level blood tests make a lot of sense--we know that different people will have different optimal levels of thyroid hormone and the only way to see what is optimal at this point is by seeing if it does what it is supposed to--that is, if your metabolism is at the correct level.

There are so many different symptoms of thyroid malfunction (including depression and hair loss), metabolic rate is the one most closely tied to thyroid function.

Since I regularly keep track of my caloric intake and temperature, the calculations that this test uses help me keep an eye on my metabolic rate (and keep me from blaming my metabolism when I don't lose as much as I'd hoped).

1-0 out of 5 stars just get tested
If you suspect you may have a thyroid problem, why not just get tested and find out?

5-0 out of 5 stars IS YOUR THROID MAKING YOU FAT?
Easy to read and understand and very helpful and informative.
I bought 5 to send to my family and friends.
Also a must read under the same topic is "Living Well With Hyopthyroidism"
by Mary Shomom. The book is full of helpful websites and informtaion on how to find good doctors that practice alternative medicine in every region of the country.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thyroid Making You Fat book
I just got this book out of storage to re-read and I realize it's wasted money.I am already on natural thyroid replacement and with that I have lost a lot of weight but to follow a 1000 calorie a day diet (in one place he says 800 per day) is impossible for me.My doctor wants me getting highly nutritous foods and there is no way on this amount.Plus, how many of us are willing to do this for not 1 week, not 2, but for 4 weeks!AND when I was doing aerobics religiously and following 1000 cal per day, I didn't lose weight but this is what he recommends.Never again.
I gave it 2 stars because it did convince me, a couple of years ago, to find a doctor who uses natural thyroid instead of just synthetics. If the synthetics work for you, hooray but they didn't for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars No help
I didn't find this book of any help. I was also already diagnosed but hoped to find a way to lose weight after 15 years of gradual increase in weight due to an underactive thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis). I couldn't possibly stick to this diet and decided that it wasn't worth trying anyway, just to find out what I know already. I had hoped it would teach me a way to eat that would help me lose weight, but it does not. It might just be of use to people who haven't yet been diagnosed, but I doubt it, because if the doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet, he is not going to do so on the basis of a book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More information on Hyperthyroid than most thyroid books
It seems most books on thyroid disorders concentrate on Hypothyroidism. This book is full of great information about Graves/hyperthyroidism.Personally I would advise to ignore the debate war about antithyroid drugs verses radioactive iodine abalation.Everyones situation is different, and no matter what you decide you should educate yourself first about your choices.Personally I have chosen to take antithyroid drugs and take the chance that my graves will go into remission,(if it doesn't then I might make a different decision) after all my thyroid is the victim, my immune system the culprit.I have read it's possible to develop Lupus, ruematoid arthritis and other immune disorders, in conjunction with graves (because it is your immune system). I feel if I can improve my health and my Graves goes into remission then I will have better peace of mind about not developing other autoimmune disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative reading
Was browsing a local used bookstore for another title on thyroid disorders when I ran across this book. I bought it on a whim and am so glad that I did.
This book is informative and offers easy-to-understand (but not insultingly easy)explanations of the how the body, and more specifically, the thyroid works. It covers hypo- and hyperthyroidism equally and is presented in a way that makes it easy to skip over the condition that doesn't pertain to you. I was especially thankful for the presentation of alternative treatments and ideas that might be beneficial, as these are so often overlooked in traditional allopathic books.
I am presently being treated for Hashimotos by an integrative practitioner who is open and willing to try new things. I can't wait until my next appointment so that I can present this newly learned information to her. After reading this book, I feel such a sense of relief that there are solutions out there to treating hypothyroidism more effectively.

2-0 out of 5 stars thyroid balance review
If you are looking for a book that outlines traditional and alternative methods for treating thyroid disorders, this is NOT the one to buy. In fact,it covers this topic in the last quarter of the book and only in a couple of pages. Mostly covers the endocrine system, symptoms, signs, thyroid drugs, differences between hypo and hyperthyroidism. This information is ok for those who are newly diagnosed and need more information. Does not provide any insightful methods on alternative methods for treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well rounded book
I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease and am struggling between hypo and hyperactive symptoms concurrently.

The Thyroid Balance is informative and gives a general overview of thyroid disorders and treatment options (including alternative medicine options) for all thyroid conditions.

It touches on the topic of when surgery is necessary and when patients may benefit from another course of action (i.e. acupuncture or other holistic treatments, avoiding certain foods that may trigger the disorder)

I think its a great book to get started with and I would defintely reccommend it to a friend. However, it was published in 2003 so I would check with a doctor to see if any of the information needs to be updated or if additional research has been done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just started and am astounded!
Well I've jsut started reading this book and am already astounded at the wealth of information.I have already learned details that i haven't in the other thyroid sources I've been reading.(they were good each for their own reasons though) This is the first book I've come across that seems to address T2 (something my doctor told me didn't exist!!!) as well as how other endocrine functions can really affect the thyroid.Even though I am still in tghe beginning chapters I am already so glad I bought this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book in my thyroid health library
Although I was diagnosed with thyroid disease almost 20 years ago, it was only a year ago that I began learning about the effects of thyroid on so many other systems in the body, and what other things affect the disease as well as treatment.

Dr. Peatfield has been vilified by the medical community in his own country but thankfully has the courage to speak out.I thought the book was extremely well written, and broken down into concise chapters (I've abbreviated the titles):
1.Intro
2.How it Works
3.Over-active thyroid gland and treatment
4.Under-active thyroid gland
5.Hypothyroidism -Symptoms
6.Hypothyroidism - Signs
7.Iodine, Other Hormones and the Thyroid
8.The Adrenal Connection
9.Hypothyroidism - the Treatment
10. The Full Treatment Protocol
11. Reverse T3 and Wilson's Syndrome
12. The Parathyroid Glands
13. Chronic Fatigue and the Thyroid Factor
14. Thyroid and Diabetes
15. Thyroid and Cholesterol
16. Thyroid and Depression
17. Growth Hormone Saga
18. For Doctors
19. Helping Yourself
20. Losing Weight

Then there 5 appendices:
A. Dental Amalgam
B. Lists of Symptoms and Signs
C. Assessment Charts
D. Resources and Further Reading
E. References

As to the comment that there was not much information regarding dosing (I think the reviewer meant about for adrenal fatigue) since this is primarily a book about thyroid, I feel Dr. Peatfield gives a good background to BEGIN researching adrenal fatigue treatment.I didn't agree with every single thing in the book but I learned a great deal and use it for reference time and again.I learned about the interrelationship with other hormones. It also better prepared me to discuss my treatment with my doctor.

I think the following are other essential books for learning about thyroid disease:
- "Stop the Thyroid Madness" by Janie Bowthorpe
- "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms" by Datis Kharrazian
- "Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic" by Mark Starr

and although I don't have it I'll probably next purchase Broda Barnes book, "Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness" as it probably is considered the groundbreaking authority on the subject.

I highly recommend Dr. Durrant-Peatfield's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life line
For anyone who considers they may have a thyroid problem, particularly Hypothyroid, you must purchase or at least read this book.It will be a reference book you will keep dipping into.
Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield a GP for many years specialising in endocrinology and particularly thyroid problems, has a different approach to patients and to treating thyroid disorders. As a consequence he found himself hounded by his peers and colleques. They were wrong to do so, he did not harm anyone. Thankfully he continues in private practice as a nutritionalist running clinics the length and breadth of this island. You can google him and make contact with his office for an appointment near your home for the cost of a pair of shoes he will change your life for the better.
I wish I had read this book 20years ago.
I have for 20 years been ill and I knew from day one I had hypothyroidism but various doctors told me it was not so.They preferrred to label me with ME/CFS.I have no problem with that except I dont believe it is correct and therefore I have missed out on 20years of treatment when I would have been able to live a heathier and less painful life.Furthermore having such a label some doctors consider this suggests you are mentally ill, hysterical, suffering psychosomatic illnes and that you are not worthy of being taken seriously.
I have been receiving treatment for hypothyroidism for a time now and I am begining to feel human again. This book will give those of you suffering from the myriad of symptoms associated with thyroid disorders, firstly good information and advice and the detailed information with which to fight your corner. It enables you almost to self prescribe and help yourself.
You could do worse than to read this excellent book.
A must to read if you think you have a thyroid problem regardless of whether you are currently receiving medical treatment or not....due to his approach to thyroid disorders you will still benefit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thyroid book by a doctor passionate about patient empowerment
Going to the doctor with symptoms of thyroid may be a futile and frustrating experience if you don't pass the blood test values required by many doctors in treating thyroid disorders. And it's hard to self-advocate when you're exhausted and being told it's all in your head, or a result of your age, or your blood test results don't warrant an increase in your thyroid dosage. In Dr. Durrant-Peatfield you have a friend indeed.

This book is all about empowering you to take care of yourself and have confidence in listening to your body's messages and self-administer treatment. This is a perfect book for thosejust starting out in learning about the thyroid because of the simplicity with which the information is presented.

The book discusses:

* The job of the thyroid and the endocrine system
* Possible way these organs malfunction and the causes
* Symptoms and signs of hyper- and hypothyroid
* Other diseases that can be caused by or exacerbated by a poorly functioning thyroid
* The role adrenal health plays in low thyroid and its treatment
* Testing and treatment options including supplemental hormones and nutrients
* Associated hormonal imbalances and how to correct those
* Weight loss
* Dietary concerns

However, the book's main focus is on treatment of thyroid disease, not necessarily "autoimmune" thyroid disease involving thyroid antibodies. Durrant-Peatfield writes: "In any laboratory workup for thyroid illness, antibodies are, or should be, checked for. Their presence, however, will little affect the ultimate treatment." I would say that their presence most definitely should affect the ultimate treatment. Autoimmune thyroid disease is really a problem with the immune system affecting the thyroid and not a malfunction of the thyroid itself. In this respect, too little information is given regarding food allergies and sensitivities, including the well-known role gluten plays and how important eliminating this food from your diet is in healing the body and, ultimately, the thyroid.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for laymen
This is a very helpful book and the most valuable part for me was the very small section (only one page) about having to build up the adrenals first - easy to overlook, as I almost did.

Be warned: if you have had low thyroid for several years (in my case over a decade before I finally self-diagnosed - partly thanks to this book and also thanks to the excellent "Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic" by Mark Starr, M.D. - and thus was able to take the first steps towards recovery) then you will almost certainly have adrenal exhaustion.

Although I initially ignored the warning about adrenal exhaustion, I found that even taking three times the normal dose of thyroid for over four months did not help. I had to stop, take adrenal support tablets for several weeks, and then restart thyroid at a smaller dose. I continued taking adrenal support tablets for several months too.

I am finally seeing noticeable improvements. Even a spring in my step, which I never expected to enjoy again, after over a decade of thinking I had ME/CFS or something even worse.

I am giving the book only four stars because it does not contain clear enough indications of dosages. For instance, in the tiny section on adrenal supplementation, it refers to adrenal tablets but ignores the fact that there are several dosages, one containing about three times the dose of the other. When it says you might need to take two or three, which one does it mean? Why not mention actual dosages, instead of vaguely referring to "two or three tablets" of undisclosed strengths?

P.S. The MUST-READ book on low thyroid now is "Stop the Thyroid Madness", passionate and comprehensive. I also recommend the book "Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It",

P.P.S. It might also be worth googling "Lyme disease: Anatomy of a cover-up" which focuses on MS but is equally relevant to many other health challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my Life!!
I am a Thyroid patient who could not tolerate Thyroid Hormone. It caused scary things to happen with my heart. Thanks to this book I realized that there was an issue with my adrenal glands.I am quite confidant that there would have been serious complications if I had continued down the path I was on at the urging of 3 different doctors. This book is well organized, easy to understand and chock full of valuable information. It's a fiver! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Easy to read and alot of information.Must read for anyone suspecting thyroid problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old school advice
Wow, I bought this book based on the 100% 5 star reviews. But it was a big dissappointment. To the authors credit, there is a very good overview of both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid disease from an old school MD.

But Dr. Rubin's view is so entirely one sided, that he offers no mention of the other side of this highly controversial disease. This is outright dangerous. On P306 he says, "A good physician bases his or her treatment on evidenced-based medicine".So he is relying on TSH level to diagnose the amount of drug to give you.But any internet search will uncover millions of testimonials of people on synthroid with healthy TSH levels that continue to have hypothyroid symptoms. He completely discounts how the patient actually feels.

Further, there is no mention of Armour thyroid in this 353 page book! This has been a more reliable and effective treatment for hypothyroid than the Synthroid most MD's recommend. It contains T3 AND T4, both important for most hypothyroid patients.I could understand making a case for Synthroid - maybe even a chapter comparing the pro's and con's of the two - but to not even mention it when many doctors are having success with this treatment is down right dangerous!

So this is a good book to give "dummies" (no offense) since there are many valuable topics of interest.I will keep this as a reference on my shelf as well. But please do NOT make this your only book.Do a search on "armour thyroid" and find a plethora of alternative viewpoints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Easy to read and understand.Entertaining book with really helpful information that helped ease some of my worries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic information
This book gives basic and important information regarding this medical problem. The author will answer questions when you e-mail them to him, which is a nice 'extra' when you don't understand something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide
A great introduction to the world of thyroid disorders. Includes everything from finding a specialist, the initial diagnosis, starting treatment and what to expect throughout the entire process. I have skimmed through other books on the subject and Thyroid for Dummies gives the best 'cram session' overview and has humor throughout the pages and even some cartoons! It really breaks up the monotony of page after page of grey text. ... Read more
