On March 10, 2008, a series of demonstrations began in Lhasa and other Tibetan regions of China to mark the 49th anniversary of an unsuccessful Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. The demonstrations appeared to begin peacefully with small groups that were then contained by security forces. Both the protests and the response of the PRC authorities escalated in the ensuing days, spreading from the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) into parts of Sichuan, Gansu, and Qinghai Provinces with Tibetan populations. By March 14, 2008, mobs of angry people were burning and looting establishments in downtown Lhasa. Authorities of the People's Republic of China (PRC) responded by sealing off Tibet and moving in large-scale security forces. Beijing has defended its actions as appropriate and necessary to restore civil order and prevent further violence. Still, China's response has resulted in renewed calls for boycotts of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony on August 8, 2008, and for China to hold talks with the Dalai Lama.China sees itself as having provided Tibet with extensive economic assistance and development using money from central government coffers, and PRC officials often seem perplexed at the simmering anger many Tibetans nevertheless retain against them. Despite the economic development, Tibetans charge that the PRC interferes with Tibetan culture and religion. They cite as examples: Beijing's interference in 1995 in the choice of the Panchen Lama, Tibet's second highestranking personage; enactment of a 'reincarnation law' in 2007 requiring Buddhist monks who wish to reincarnate to obtain prior approval from Beijing; and China's policy of conducting 'patriotic education' campaigns, as well as efforts to foster atheism, among the Tibetan religious community. The PRC defends the campaigns as a tool to help monks become loyal, law-abiding citizens of China. Controversy over the role of the Dalai Lama and the impact of PRC control on Tibet's language, culture, and religion have prompted recurring actions by Congress in support of Tibet's traditions - actions routinely denounced by Beijing. ... Breathtaking and Informative
If you've ever enjoyed a National Geographic article -- wonderful photographs, fascinating subject -- but felt that it was too short, with nowhere near enough text, and have been left feeling still hungry to know more ... well, this book is for you.

The photographs are sumptuous, reflecting the training and support provided by the National Geographic Society to the anthropologist-authors, experts on Tibet and other high altitude regions. For this book, they selected 212 images from about 10,000 slides taken during 16 months of field work from 1986-88.The results are stunning, and I only wish the best were available as large prints for framing.

If you have seen the documentary film (available on DVD/video) "Saltmen of Tibet", this book provides a much expanded look at the life of the same society.The landscape is the same also, although more spectacular since it reaches from the plains into the surrounding mountains.The book and film make an interesting pair, nicely complementing each other.

The subjects are some half-million nomadic pastoralists living in the Changtang region of Western Tibet, a high altitude plateau where the climate is too severe and unpredictable for agriculture and the economy has for centuries, perhaps millenia, centered around herding sheep, goats and yaks.Their culture was integrated with the broader Tibetan society, through direct governance and economic ties, yet remained distinct and distinctive.Far from the primitive small bands of egalitarian herders one might imagine, there is substantial stratification of wealth and class.The book describes the traditional economic and social life, something of the traditional history, and also the history of interaction with and subjugation to the Chinese.

The style is engaging, a cross between the narrative story of the expedition and topically organized description (e.g., "Dairy Products", "The Salt Trek", "Economic and Social Change Under the New Policies").In addition to the many simply beautiful pictures of the landscape, herds and wildlife, there are numerous photographs of the daily activities such as butter and cheese making, hay cutting, or just an old woman sitting in the sun with her rosary.

In short, highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Tibet, nomadic cultures, or the high regions of the earth. ... Read more

I loved this book!
I recently read 'For Tibet, with Love'...and LOVED it! It was posted to me by a wonderful friend in the uk, who just knew I'd adore it. I have a lot of Tibetan friends and have been lucky enough to visit places in India mentioned in 'For Tibet'...it transported me back...made me sad and angry at times...made me laugh with delight...and lifted my spirit and gave me hope. In fact it has inspired me to do something I feel is important but was avoiding because it felt too difficult. I love the way it is written, it was like listening to a dear friend share their story and journey, frustrations and dreams. I know its a book, but it feels more like a friendship. Its fabulous, I feel you'll be doing yourself a great service to buy and read this book!

Fascinating, funny and uplifting, this is an essential book for anyone who, like the author, has a deep desire to do something to change our world. It's a perfect example of how huge and daunting this task seems to be with the stubbornness of certain governments and endless complications, but that ultimately the most effective achievemnents come from the heart and require a bit of courage, daring and determination. It's also a comprehensible and interesting insight into the world of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibet itself, the very qualities of which (honesty, compassion and joyfulness) shine from each page. Tibet: Myth and Reality
Completely demolishes many of the myths that are commonly perpetuated in the west by both the propaganda spewing, neferious factions and the ignorant but good-intentioned elements on the contentious issues relating to China and Tibet. Especially good are the sociological study by Goldstein, Beall, Jiao, Tsering and the two articles by Barry Sautman and Debyesh Anand. The Goldstein, et al study gives a glimps of the current economic, political and social situations of rural Tibetans through a survey conducted independently by these world renowned Tibetologists. The most interesting result for me is that they found that more than 90% of all rural Tibetans 60-79 years of age considered their lives to be better than the lives of their parents who had lived almost entirely before Chinese "liberalizaton" policies first introduced in 1959. The study also showed that religion is an esential aspect of most of the lives of the Tibetans studied and that few religious restrictions were in place that prevented them from practicing them. Sautman's article exposes the genocide hoaxes perpetuated by the pro-Tibet faction. Sautman is a political scientist and a expert on international law and human rights law.

The artcle by Debyesh Anand provides us with a outstanding vision of how the Tibet issue may be resolved. Anand shows that the traditional discourse has been western dominated which tended to distort the historical actualities of sino-tibetan relationship and that a solution that is truly just and fair to all sides might be one that must be supplied and grounded on an entirely new (non-western) framework.

Other articles also show how complex the current situation is in Tibet and just how difficult it will be to come to a satisfactory solution. Those who are open minded about the "Tibet Question" will likely find this work indispensible as a reference work for further substantive dialogue.

Indespensible
If you are studying Tibet, you CANNOT go without reading at least a few of the essays in this collection.

Sautman's "'Demographic Annihilation' and Tibet" is worth the price alone. 20 pages with 8 pages of bibliography. The bibliography is almost half the length of the essay itself!

Since it is a compilation the views in the book will vary, sometimes widely, but ALL of the essays are worth reading, and they are presented in such a way that the views in one will often compliment the views in the previous essay. While the views in the book may vary, none stray into the area of polemic, propaganda, or other such genres which would only detract from the overall scholarly tone of the works included. The book includes works from nearly all of the heavy-hitters in the academic world who deal with Tibet (Goldstein, Sautman, Barnett, Lixiong, Grunfeld).

You may not agree with every author in here, but you will at least understand and appreciate their position, and understanding is what is needed most. ... Read more
