Great Titanic Book Young Readers
I purchased this book for my son in second grade who iscaptivated by the tragedy of the sinking of the Titanic and this book was perfect for his reading level and probably younger readers too. He has watched several movies about the Titanic and he took this book into school today to share with his class. It gives a very good account of the facts and brings the reader forward to it's dsicovery in the 1980's. It is a good book for the kids to read to themselves or for parents to read to them. I liked it myself.

Informative and educational reading book
Excellent book, with great pictures and stories of passengers as well as Ballard's discovery. My son (6) loves to read about Ruth, and life on the Titanic. My 4 year old loves to have the story read to him, and loves all the pictures too.

Great book for a good price!!

Touching
I was captivated by this book as a Child. It featured large interesting images of the wreck and heartfelt content about the Titanic and her casualties. I'd recommend this book for the same reasons I found it so intruding ten years ago... Another interesting book to follow up with this one would be Dr. Ballard's "Exploring the Titanic." Both help reinforce an interest in this significant historical event.

Another infomative book for kids!
I was thrilled when my son started reading and was glad to buy books of interest for him. This book was used a lot in our house, he eve took it with him when we went to the traveling tour of the Titanic. Loads of great information.

Finding the Titanic
Would you ever stay on a boat that was sinking? The people on the Titanic had to make some decisions. Some people decided to stay on the Titanic, other people decided to hop into a lifeboat. I thought this book was very interesting. There was lots of action. (Example) the largest boat in the world hit an iceberg and started to sink! Some people even jumped of the large boat into the freezing water. There was a 12-year girl named Ruth that was left behind! The lifeboat that her mother and her two brothers were in was too crowded so she had to go in a lifeboat with a lot of strangers that Ruth didn't know. I would give these book 3 stars. I thought there were a lot of BRAVE characters, like Ruth. From this book I learned that you should always do what other people say.

A HIT!
This was a Christmas gift for my 9 year old grandson.He loved it!It's reported to me it is read often and at times he falls asleep after reading it at bedtime.This choice was a shot in the dark but worked out wonderfully.

Take a Trip on the Titanic
My eight year old brought this book home from her school library and asked me if I would read it with her.Well, I started to read it and couldn't put it down. The pictures, the photos, the descriptions and the narratives were so rich and wonderful, by the time I was done reading I felt as though I had journeyed on the Titanic myself.I just can't say enough about this fantastic book.Very highly recommended.

This is a GREAT BOOK!
I bought this book for my eight year old son and he LOVES IT! He's a big fan of the Titanic and owns several books and DVD on the subject.As all the other reviews mention, this is an excellent book. Well written and all the information about Titanic, shipwrecks, history, history of technology, history of America, ocean liner, shipwreck, ships, etc are great. Best Titanic book I've seen
This is a wonderful book with great pictures.My kids checked it out so many times from the library that I finally bought one to have at home.The book tells the story of the making of the Titanic, the fateful journey, the discovery of the wreckage.It has many pictures and a few projected pictures (what it may have looked like).There is also a section of questions and answers, such as the differences in first, second, and third class.I cannot recommend this book highly enough! ... Shadow of the Titanic
My husband is the childof another survivor of the Titanic, He is always interested the stories of the people as they moved on after the disaster. The author, whom his parents met on several occasions, had a very interesting life which was shaped by the trauma she experienced as a child. It is an easy read and a fascinating story, which reflected theperspective of one born in the early 20th century through the wars into the end of the century.

It is a welcome addition to our personal Titanic collection.

The true story of a remarkable survivor!
Eva had loving parents when she boarded Titanic not by choice but their other ship had problems. Her mother had a premonition. She believed the ship was cursed and would never make it's final destination, New York City. Her mother had no idea how right she was. She spent her days sleeping and her nights up keeping watch. Eva and her father disregarded her mother's fear as too much. After all, Mrs. Hart never felt this way before or after Titanic. It's Eva who I remember as a Titanic Survivor speaking up on Robert Ballard's documentary in 1986. Besides being a Titanic survivor, she pursued a singing career and lived in Australia. Although she never married or had children, Eva was by no means, dull or not interesting. On the contrary, she is one of the most memorable because she became a Justice of the Peace in her town of Chelmsford, Essex, England and she was awarded an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1974 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to the community. Only Herbert Pittman was awarded an MBE for his services to the military during World War II. Pittman was also a Titanic survivor and crewmate who helped the survivors. Besides surviving Titanic, Eva showed how to be a survivor with dignity, grace, and class. She matured at 7 years old when she last saw her father before he perished with all the others. Her tale of survival or her years afterword could have made a film of it's merit worth watching. But most survivors don't want to see another Titanic film no matter how wonderful if it is. They still bear scars themselves.

More than just another Titanic book
While a lot of Titanic books seem to focus only on the voyage, the disaster, and the immediate aftermath, this book goes into more uncharted territory.As it points out, in a way, the tragedy at sea was just the beginning of the story.It covers the construction of the ship, what sea travel was like before the Titanic (very dangerous even for first-class passengers because of the shoddily-built ships, crowded living quarters, bad food, and lack of ventilation), all of the wonders on the Titanic, at least for the first-class passengers (such as a gymnasium, a café, beautiful staircases, and a reading room), some of the people who were on the voyage, how and why the ship sank (a decades-old mystery that was finally solved in 1996 through cutting-edge modern technology), the long but finally successful quest to locate the Titanic on the bottom of the ocean, how the tragedy might have been prevented, the types of robots and undersea vehicles used to explore the wreck, the myriad of artifacts recovered from the sight, the stabilisation process used on the artifacts immediately after they come out of the deep water, and how much longer the Titanic will remain before it's totally eaten away by rusticles.Besides the in-depth text, there are also a lot of amazing pictures, many of them of the artifacts salvaged from the wreck (such as playing cards, personal letters and postcards that are still very much readable, cigarettes, dishes and pots, clothing, chandeliers, a bottle of olives, jewelry, razors, and money), as well as some great diagrams illustrating such things as the ship's layout, the anatomy of the disaster, and the various parts of the undersea robots and ships used in the salvage.It's a shame such a great book is currently out of print, since it paints such an in-depth and multi-faceted picture of the Titanic and the cross-section of humanity that was on board.

absolutely beautiful book, threads past and present, a must for those interested in the Titanic
For me, the greatest story of the Titanic was the true story. I'm not really one for nonfiction, and yet this story just fascinates me (and so many others) unbelievably. Anyway, this book is beautifully and poeticly written, full of amazing pictures and history. Best of all, it is incredibly up to date with a wealth of new findings and information about the wreck. Grade: A-

What Bill C. said is completely off topic this is a book about the greatest sea disaster that changed the world the Titanic. NOT the Lusitania which was sunk even after americans were warned by the german embassy in the US to travelers that any ship flying the british flag would be sunk.Bill C obviously needs to learn his history cause hes really showing how little he knows, The book is great it covers just about every major point of Titanic.If you want to read about the Lusitania which was on her last voyage from the start and was to be scrapped after she returned to england go read bob ballards book about the Sinking of the Lustiania.If you want to read a book about the greatest sea disaster that was foretold 14 years before by a writer and one that changed how things were done from having the wireless systems up 24 hours a day to ensure that distress messages would be receved to lifeboats for everyone regardless the tonnage which was how Titanic was required by law to carry 16 boats cause it stated anyship over 16,000 Tons is required to carry 16 boats even though Titanic was 57,000 Long Tons.

I would recommed this book to anyone that wants a well put together book or anyone that is a Titanic buff.

A lot of bull about the Titanic..
as the world's greatest ocean liner. The Lusitania (which sunk in 1915) brought the USA into World War One.That Lusitania was an important ship! The Titanic sinking did nothing sinking for the USA or any country that could equal bringing a country into a World War.

Attractive Book for Light Reading
Overall, this is a nicely-designed and illustrated book that would make a great gift.Many of the artifact photos (of which there are plenty) are unique to this book.The issue of salvage haunts every page of this book.On numerous occasions author Susan Wels makes the case for RMS Titanic, Inc. and their salvage operations.That may or may not be fine to you, depending upon your view of the whole salvage thing, but you'll probably find that it gets kind of annoying and repetitive after a while.Much is made of the fact that Titanic-finder Robert Ballard initially supported some salvage operations (he is now opposed to them).

All of that aside, the rest of the book is nice to look at and worth reading.The text plays second-fiddle to the photographs, but that's fine for a book such as this.

I was a bit surprised at one error in the text- in describing Captain Smith's safety record, Wels notes that he was captain of the Germanic when it `capsized' in 1899.Well, the Germanic sank upright at its pier because of an ice storm; it was quickly re-floated and spent another 51 years in service; the captain and crew were found not at fault by White Star; and the captain at the time was Edward McKinstry, not Edward J. My "Titanic" Book Report by Ryan Pearl
In the first couple chapters, the book tells how wonderful the Titanic was. Very wealthy people were on the Titanic. People asked members of the crew if the boat could sink. The crew all said no it could not sink. The ship was built with the best of everything.

The story of the Titanic begins in Southampton, England and was to end in New York. Unfortunately, most of the story takes place after the Titanic hit an iceberg around Iceland in the Atlantic Ocean.

The ship hit an iceberg and began to sink. There were lifeboats on the ship but not nearly enough for everyone. Women and children were allowed on the lifeboats before the men. Wealthy people in first class got to leave before the poor people in third class. Many families did not want to be separated from each other and some men were chicken and wanted to get on the lifeboats before all the women and children were safe. In some cases the men were able to leave with the children and the mother stayed on board.

There were 2200 people on board the ship. In the end only 713 people survived. Over 1500 people died when the ship sank.

I love this book!

A good, easy read with a good moral
Even at 36 years old I enjoyed this book. It was a good, easy read about a boy having to leave a place he loves. It had no objectionable material in it. It also taught a lesson about how the lower class is treated. It helped you see how the upper class lives and how the lower class lives. Even the upper class servants look down on lower class people.

If you are looking for tons of information about the Titanic you will be unhappy with the book. The book focuses more on the people on the ship than the sinking or the ship itself.

A disapointment
I was surprised to hear such high reviews for this book.I expected an easier to follow book with a better ending-you are left guessing about how the mail characters end up.It took about 150 pages to really pick up and make sense.At least it is an easy reader- big lettering and small pages-

mediocre Titanic historical fiction
A young boy travels first class on the Titanic from his home and past in Ireland to his parents in America. He's mainly worried about a family of ruffians in steerage who blame his grandfather for being kicked out of Ireland. Barry falls for their sister, and during the sinking of the ship, fights to save her. The book has nice details of the ship and is decently written. Only one thing really grates against me: the fact that almost everyone Barry meets believe the ship to be doomed or have supernatural prediction that something is going to happen before anything does. Besides that, the book is fairly mediocre. The characters just don't have anything going on, especially between each other. Grade: B-

In the book S.O.S titanic some very interesting things happen to Barry. First Barry sneaks out of his first class cabin late at night on board the RMS Titanic and he drops his grandpa's glove in steerage. As he goes down to steerage to get his glove he meets the Flyne boys that are also from Ireland but had to leave because of his grandparents, they inevitably get into a fight and Barry has to get stitches.Barry finds his glove and also meets a girl Peegen that he really starts to like A LOT! But the titanic has hit an iceberg and is starting to sink!She has no life jacket and is trapped in steerage, he frantically starts looking for her and gets there Just in time, they jump off the ship. They find a flipped life boat after a few hours. The next morning another ship comes and rescues the survivors.

Interesting book of the week
The book SOS titanic was mostly about the pasengers. Some of the people on the ship did not about what was going on around them. Before they hit the ice burg the lady thinks it looked prety. As soon as they hit the ice burg and new they were sinking. They all began to scatter all ofer the top deck. I liked this book because the author really explans what people are doing. Like when he hits the ice burg the captainis reallyworied about the passengersand what happens to them to them. also they are in a big hurry to get the life boats. they alsoanounced that ladys and children first. People thought the Titanic was unsinkable but people were wrong!The book, Titanic,by Victoria Sherrow is a true story about the building and sinking of the world's largest ship, the Titanic.

The Titanic was the world's biggest ship at the time. People that thought it was not going to sink.There were 2,208 passengers on board. The Titanic sank because the captain said to go faster and they crashed into an iceberg.Some people lived, some people died.This book tells the story how people were killed, rescued or survived.

This is a third person story.The word choice was just right for a fourth-grader.It was an easy to follow, well-written book.I think other kids would like to read this book.

Excellent for kids who love to read
Our 6 year old son is one who loves to read and discover new things. He finds the story and pictures in this book quite fascinating, and goes back to it all the time. We are looking at getting the other ones in the series. The photo's are very impressive and hold his interest. It works for him better than those easy readers with color drawings. Great children's book
My son (age five) saw this book highlighted on Reading Rainbow and was so taken with the story that I purchased it for him. We've read this book over and over. He loves it.

Appropriate in all ways for the target age group
My 7-year-old read this (with a little help), and we were both fascinated. The story is told accurately but with sensitivity to the age level. It satisfied my son's curiosity, and he understood what a tragedy it was, without being overwhelmed with horrifying details. It was explained what went wrong, and there was reassurance that we had learned from the mistakes. And I liked the follow-up about how Robert Ballard and his crew found the Titanic years later.
Great illustrations, too, showing period clothing, etc.
This is a really nice little book that seems to me appropriate in all ways for kids about age 7-9. And if you're getting this, go ahead and get "Moonwalk" by the same author. That one was downright exciting.

This book is excellent. The stories were very compelling and I could not put it down. The way that Colonel Gracie described the sinking and the behavior and calmness and the bravery of the people put the story in a whole new light for me. So many things that were have said to have happened didn't according to these survivors. The book was absolutely awesome!

It is the fact that this book is taken from the testimony of four of Titanic's survivors that makes this book so excellent. One gets a real sense of the times---Edwardian England---where duty was paramount and the supposed superiorty of the English race, which colors the survivor's accounts, hints at the very pride that contributed to the disaster---a fascinating paradox. Not only do you get the testimoney from four survivors--each several chapters---but also a boat by boat testimonial from the survivors of those boats. Another reviewer here found this testimony mundane, but I found it fascinating and objectively complete. It seems that the most famous account of the disaster in book form, A Night to Remember, took much of its information from this book, and what makes this book so much more appealing is that the accounts are unfiltered. Captain Lightoller's account is particularly illuminating in that it shines a critical light on the Titanic hearings before the U.S. and English governments, which he calls a "farce." Didn't want to give this up!
A present for my 9 year old grandson.This was opened in my presence and I wanted him to leave it with me for a short while, but that didn't happen.He was too anxious to have these pictures to match what had only been in his imagination.I now view the pages when I visit him. It is a fascinating visual for any Titanic curious person.

No pop up feature.
The book is nice, no different than any other, however. I bought this specifically for the pop-up feature which the one I received did not have.

Titantic Pop-Up
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter-in-law who collects pop-up books.She was very pleased with it.From reading the description, I thought it contained several pop-up pictures, but there was only one, a hugh pop-up of the Titanic itself.The other "pop-ups" were merely small pictures under flaps that lifted up.Over all it was a very nice book, but I think the description needs to be more accurate.

Excellent Book, but somewhat messed up!
Upon receiving my order today, I was so excited to open this book to see how much my son was going to love it. He will still love it - it is a GREAT book - but after opening it up, there are some pockets on the inside that hold extra items (that are by the way really neat). The pockets however are already coming loose from the back of the book. I think I can fix it with glue or double sided tape, but a little disappointed that it was already falling apart. My 6 year old son with absolutely love this book though!

Best Book on the Anatomy of the Titanic Tragedy
This is the best modern inquiry into the causes of the Titanic sinking.I had to ask myself a question after reading this insightful book.Was the disaster planned by European communists? People may scoff at the notion of a socialist-labour conspiracy here.Yet,if you read between the lines,it has some credible possibilties that may be true.One name that i read over was that of 'Winterstorm' on the cruise passenger list.It turns out that that name is also that of a Swedish communist spy for the fledgling Bolsheviks.Is this a coincedence or a real spy for the growing communist movement in Europe?The idea of the Titanic being an enclosed floating rat trap containing robber barons and mega-capitalists,is not that absurd.Was Winterstrom passing encoded messages via the ship's new experimental Marconi radio system? Was Winterstrom a secret agent who knew the doomed ship's impending encounter with the iceberg.Was Winterstrom,et al,distractors of the ship's officiers? An Instant Classic
As years rolled on by since the Titanic set sail from Southampton, and Sank five days into her maiden voyage, technology as well as the human understanding of the elements of science began to evolve. So much, that the fabled liner was located 2 1/2 miles below the ocean's surface, 74 years after she foundered. Yet, a certain fog seems to surround the ship, rendering her tale perplexing, and when considering facts, figures and information, nearly incomplete. Accordingly, Dr. Pellegrino began to decipher the Titanic's, say, hieroglyphics laying on the bed of the Atlantic, in three sections, blown into a mile wide radius of debris. Through his book "Ghosts of the Titanic", he took the steps required to better understand the RMS Titanic. He took steps forward into our advanced civilization, into the future, and out to space. He also took steps back to a time or a world rather, seemingly so distant from our own today. A time when quite possibly, the Titanic may have existed, and then ceased to exist suddenly, altering the lives of many and shocking the minds of many more.

In any event, the sinking of the Titanic has carried on a certain legacy among people. A grievous, sorrowful aspect of history, perhaps, handed down through first-hand accounts from survivors, and remarkable new evidence utilizing the latest technology. Ghosts of the Titanic remains a collection of thoughts, quotes, actions and the length of the altered lives involved in the disaster. The Titanic is composed of so many intertwining stories of damaged lives that it becomes difficult not to completely connect with the fellow humans, and their agony - The Navratil brothers, Edith Russell, Thomas Andrews of even Officer Murdoch. Their lives are portrayed like the immortalized texts on the stone tablets they really are due to the Titanic - Helen Churchill Candee, or Major Peuchen, and their lives aboard the vessel ,and after it. Many people like to place themselves in their positions, and imagine how they would react. Reading Ghosts of the Titanic, it's your turn to witness the pandemonium, or standby and watch the lives of 2,200 people, on different ends of a social spectrum, share that one dramatic night.

It's Pellegrino's unique expressed ability to take such subjects and allow them to branch off into so many, that truly defines the significance of science. The ability to unmask the overlapping characteristics of history inevitably repeating themselves like an endless complex cycle with humans at it's center. The logic is phenominal. And often times, it's amazing to learn we have control over this phenomenon, by learning how it effected others before us, others in that time long ago when 1500 people lost their lives to a sinking vessel. One traveling 21 knots into an ice field known to lie ahead, out of greed and arrogance. One that carried an insufficient amount of lifeboats, or one that left a scar on the hearts of so many, and inspired so much more in it's wake. More than any individual could possibly imagine.

Dr. Pellegrino honestly knows how enthrall his reader. By explaining the functions of rusticle organisms that inhabit the empty corridors of the RMS Titanic. The pattern or chain reaction of events that took place then and do now is hard to miss. He introduces a new world where sea snow disturbs the liners deterioration and the deterioration of our own ozone layer. Global warming and increasing CO2 levels in our atmosphere holds it's own tragic tune. This web of events, and experiences takes it's toll on the venerable heart, it allows the brain to wander, and leaves the soul enough warmth to regret ever attempting to leave the icy night RMS Titanic disappeared beneath the ocean's surface, only to resurface again. He weaves together the finest silk both history and science have to offer.

I've encountered a world, I will carry on with me forever. The books is fast paced, and quite detailed. Pellegrino is clever, and his use of events from his own life and how the books subject - Titanic and science - have effected him proves to be an effective way to draw in the reader. I highly recommend it to any reader, willing to take the adventure.

Rusticles aren't boring and I love this book
Pellegrino does have a busy mind and he takes interest in so many angles. Many reviewers complain this book gets boring, but for me (no scientist) the rusticles and their importance were the most fascinating aspect of this Titanic story, one of innumerable accounts of that tragic night.

The "rusticles" are a new life form, rust and bacteria symbiotically eating the carcass of the ship. Medical research on rusticles may someday save more lives than Titanic lost. They deserve all the attention Pellegrino gives them.

A fresh angle Pellegrino offers on this old story: the dangerous "don't challenge authority" syndrome. Capt. Smith knew better than to speed through ice-laden waters on a moonless night. His higher-ups, however, kept pressuring him to increase speed, and he obeyed. How hard it is for us to challenge authority, risk our jobs, dare to defy orders. But if only Capt. Smith had...

"If only" is the litany of all tragedies, such as Romeo and Juliet and the endless little details which might have made all the difference.

The market is glutted with Titanic books, but this one is one of the most creative and thought provoking. Facts may be skewed here and there, but overall it's a great read.

The Ghosts were somewhat lost
I was interested in the author's perspective of the individuals and their accounts on the Titanic. The relevance of the discoveries at the wreck site were timely when the book was written but somewhat dated to a Titanic history student. I found his interpretation of the development of life as troublesome. It really spoiled my enjoyment of an otherwise good read. The quality of the book itself was excellent.

These reviews made me think again
Well, I caught a few errors when I wsa reading it, but some of the other commentary here has made me even more cautious of Dr. Pellegrino's scholarship. (That thing about Pellegrino claiming Lord interviewed Lightoller after Lightoller had died is particularly disturbing.) This book is a lot of fun to read, in spite of (and at times because of) the fact that it's totally all over the place; information is scattered randomly throughout and there's no apparently logical order to it. Yes, he does also go off on some tangets--some of which are interesting, and some of which are maudlin, overly personal and just embarrassing. The best parts are those where Pellegrino's voice does not dominate, but where we get to hear extensively from other, very well-informed people like Ballard, Lord and yes, even Jim Cameron.

Be warned, though: Pellegrino fabricates dialog for conversations that have never been supported with documentary evidence, and is a much better oceanographer than a historian. ... Read more

Comprehensive in the Extreme
I must say this is the most comprehensive book on the Titanic I have yet seen.Every facet of the liner's history from its origins to the wreck exploration is covered.Each chapter includes pictures of everything connected to the ship.Anyone with any interest in Titanic at all should have a copy.

I did think the authors could have done better with their chapter on the sinking itself though.As it is they wrote little text and tell the story through picture captions!It is as if a book on the Kennedy assassination covered details of the flight to Dallas and then said little about the shooting itself.I also feel the authors were a bit too soft on Lord of the Californian.

Wonderful pictorial record of the Titanic story
I found this book in my local library and took it out to read.However as soon as I got it home and looked through it I was enthralled by the pictures.The text was fairly standard fare although some of the earlier chapters had interesting info concerning the planning and construction of Titanic.The pictures steal the show and they made up my mind to buy this book for myself as such pictures need to be looked at and digested over months and years rather than the few weeks one has with a library book.If you have any interest in Titanic - BUY IT.

Awesome!
This book is great for everyone from the the student doing intense research to the person who just wants to learn more about the Titanic. Highly recommended read!

A Little Bit of Everything
I bought this book immediately after touring the artifact exhibition. I'm glad I did. This book is a fascinating read, touching on everything from the planning to the building to the sinking and investigations. Merideth left very few stones unturned.

I especially enjoyed the discussion of the "Californian" and how Lord and his crew may not have done anything wrong when their actions are seen in the context of the time.

My only reservation is that there are entirely too many misspellings and grammatical errors, which reduce credibility. This is the revised version, but it looks like the editor didn't do his/her job.

Along with the exhibition, this book turned me into a "Titanic" buff. Thank you, Lee Merideth.

Not "definitive" by any means, but worthwhile anyway
This book is sort of an encyclopedia of items about RMS Titanic, from her conception, through design/building, and her fateful maiden voyage.It also has some additional factoids about the Californian and the aftermath.It certainly can be read cover to cover though, if one chooses; the factoids are designed to flow from chapter to chapter; I suspect this is why some items are sometimes restated (though not often enough to lower the value of this work IMHO).This would be a great companion to a visit to a "Titanic Exhibition", as one could quickly get additional information about the exhibits.However, I must agree with another reviewer in that while the author cites the latest research about the Californian, namely that due to salvage operations and analysis of the inquire testimony the Californian was most likely only 10 -15 miles away; he believes there was nothing to be done.The reason being the ship was "surrounded by ice"-as they transmitted before shutting down for the night.One cannot help but contrast this to the Carpathia, who risked collision with pack ice and icebergs for 4 hours to rescue survivors.That aside, recommended.

Nice little book about Titanic
This was a nice little book, however, I felt it repeated itself a lot with the same information over and over.In addition, there were several grammatical errors/sentence mistakes that always detracts from a read.Some of the pictures were very interesting-particularly the last picture taken of Murdoch and Lightoller before the ship left on its journey.I did learn a few new things about the Titanic.

A fascinating historical record

As the Introduction makes clear, this book was written to chronicle the associations between the Titanic and the town and people of Southampton. ... it is a fascinating and detailed record of considerable interest to any true Titanic historian, (as opposed to someone whose knowledge of the ship is based entirely on that dreadful movie). ... This is a fine collection of anecdotes, letters and photographs, many of them not found in other books, and a fitting tribute to the 686 crew members who were residents of Southampton who died in the disaster.
Also recommended - The Odyssey of C.H. Lightholler by Patrick Stenson - the astonishing life story of Titanic's Second Officer.

Terribly edited book
This book is written in a disjointed fashion. There is no theme, just mish-mash. And the few people mentioned in the books we have heard the stories before. The few people they mention over and over again in TitanicVoices were too loud. They needed to turn the volume down.

Lots of information about Titanic
This book has a lot of details that a lot of people wouldn't like but as for me having a large collection of Titanic books I love to read anything new. A lot of the stories printed at the time of the disaster were exaggerated but just as many were told from people who gave their own personal experience which I find very interesting.Besides that there were a lot of stories, not just a few. This book will also be a good reference if I decide I want more information at a later time about the the building of the ship. I bought it at a reasonable price and enjoyed it.

Annoying
I'll read anything to do with the Titanic, but from now on, I'm going to purchase more carefully (or I'll tell other people to do so, this was a Christmas present!) This is one of the most tedious Titanic books I've ever read. (Maybe I've read too many? I own 12!) At 500+ pages long, it doesn't beat the latest Harry Potter book, but with that amount of detail in a book, it took me a fair few weeks to plough through, and that's saying something! The last Titanic book I read was done and dusted in a couple of hours.

The bits I did enjoy in this book was the middle section. If you want to hear every single little detail about how the Titanic was built, how much each little item of cutlery cost, then read it. If I was to read this again, I would skip maybe the first 40 pages. The latter section of the book, is mainly the trial thing after the Titanic sinking. The first part is OK, with all the witnesses accounts of the sinking, but then it starts to review it all, and it's so dull!

Also with this book, there are a LOT of press cuttings - with the majority being very repetitive. The most interesting in this are the survivor's stories of what happened before and happened after the Titanic sank. There are a lot of glaring inconsistencies during these reports, some of which are exaggerated so much, that they're almost the style of a Hollywood blockbuster (hmmmmmmmmmm). It's quite funny when you read these survivor's accounts, especially one after the other (the accounts are ordered as to what lifeboat the survivor's got off on ie. all the boats on boat 15 are all grouped together). Obviously some of the survivors would have been deeply shocked after this tragedy, but some of them are so overly exaggerated, it's actually hilarious.

A good book to have if you're a Titanic fan. If you start getting bored, skip to the chapter. Would save a lot of time! ... Read more

Other chapters include a zestful account of how the Great Lakes press reported this universal tragedy (in varying degrees of emotion and accuracy), the effects that "Titanic" and her sinking had upon Great Lakes shipping and safety (influencing disastrous results such as the capsizing of the steamer, "Eastland," in Chicago's harbor three years later), and the role of wireless (early radio) in the "Titanic" disaster as well as its connections, significance and development in the Great Lakes.

There is considerable information about two unique Great Lakes vessels which were launched almost simultaneously with "Titanic": the "City of Detroit III", which was then the largest paddlewheel steamer in the world, and the "Col. James B. Schoonmaker," the world's largest freighter at that time. Aside from size, the comparisons of these ships and their histories are astonishing.

Also included are individual chapters dedicated to several colorful characters: Great Lakes captain and founder of a transportation company, Edward G. Crosby of Milwaukee, who was traveling on "Titanic" with his family; famous artists Francis David Millet and Samual Ward Stanton, who were on board the doomed ship and both of whom had strong Great Lakes connections (plus related information about two present-day Great Lakes maritime artists who coincidentally have vital links to "Titanic"); and a writer, born to a Great Lakes schooner captain on the shores of Lake Ontario at Oswego, New York, Morgan Robertson, who uncannily prophesied the "Titanic" disaster in a story he wrote and published in 1898, fourteen years before the famous ship sank.

Aside from the many engrossing, never-before-told stories of "Titanic" survivors and victims from the Great Lakes region, this book makes numerous little-known connections between the world's most famous shipwreck and Great Lakes maritime history. These multiple links will astonish the reader!

Awareness is Priceless
It is so easy to think of the Titanic sinking as something that happened so long ago to people from a different part of the world and country but Cris Kohl brings the story close to home for many of us with the Great Lakes Connections.I honestly didn't know much about the local connection until maybe 10 years ago but was quite shocked upon reading his book to learn of so many from the nearby area and surrounding Great Lakes.It just made the disaster that much more tragic for me because it brought it close to home.Although none of my relatives were aboard, I can now say that members of my community were aboard and although many were rescued, many were not and I felt honored to be able to see their names in print.I'm glad that Cris also included many photos of final resting places, too.Overall, I think it's easy to think in terms that if a tragedy didn't happen in our area that it doesn't really affect us but this is a prime example of a global tragedy that is still affecting us today.Thank you Cris for bringing some awareness to it. ... The Sinking of the Titanic, by Bruce M. Caplan
I have just recently traveled to Nova Scotia and wanted to visit the site of this tragic catastrophe. A friend of mine told me about the book, and I went ahead and purchased it. I found this book fascinating, very detailing and extremely well written. Mr. Caplan did a fantastic job in researching this subject, in spite of the time that has gone by. I would recommend this book to any person that would be interested in history.

A "need to have" for Titanic fans
I bought this book when a temporary Titanic exibit came to the city where I live. I met the editor and had him sign my copy. When I got home and read it I discovered many interesting facts about the Titanic that even I didn't know. This book is filled with lots of true life stories about the disaster. Anyone who is interested in the Titanic just a tiny bit MUST read this book!!

Best Titanic Book I've Ever Read!
I really enjoyed this book.The authors descriptions bring the tragedy to life.The idea that the Titanic was on fire before it left England fascinated me.I've read more than 20 books about the Titanic, and I think this one is the best!
