Product Description
Artist Roger Bansemer gets an unexpected invitation to dive two and a half miles down into the Atlantic to the site of one of the most famous shipwrecks in history. Armed with his artist’s eye and insight, he embarks on an expedition on a Russian research ship to the Titanic. In this compelling journal, Bansemer’s writing and stunning visual work bring us into the adventure, relaying the colorful characters on the expedition, the history and past grandeur of the Titanic, and the aching beauty of the ship’s underwater remains.

Bansemer became the 112th person to dive to the Titanic, the sixth person under the stern, and the first artist to have painted Titanic on site. This book chronicles his journey in a mixture paintings, photos, and digitally-painted images.

He almost didn’t make it out to the site as a hurricane churning inthe southeast Atlantic kept him in St. John’s, Newfoundland, waiting. But an artist uses his time to observe and paint, and hislove of painting nature and lighthouses thus play their part in thisbook too. Then his lifelong fascination with painting ships takes overas he sails in the Explorer out to the research vessel Keldysh. Thelittle launch Koresh, the wondrous submersible Mir, and finally theghostly remains of the Titanic all appear from the artist’s brush.

Bansemer’s fascination with painting people, especially the salty, nautical types, finds full expression. Meet buddy Lowell and divingpartner Ralph; various Russian crewmen including Bird Man Pierre,Pirate Skippy, the cooks, the "cowboy" who "rides" the submersible;Keldysh Captain Gorbach; and many others. Bansemer captures them allin their most characteristic poses.

The star is always the Titanic, majestic even at the bottom of the sea. Bansemer pays tribute to the many people who went down with her, acknowledging her role as their memorial resting place. This book, Roger Bansemer’s written and painted journal of his journey to Titanic, is also offered in their memory. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Puzzling
This sequel to "Murder on the Titanic" is pleasing to read and enjoyable, however it, as well as its first installment, carry voids in plot. Plot holes, if you will. It's dissapointing, because he raises more questions than he gives answers. But otherwise, it's a thrilling read, and has some interesting commentaries on the real-life Titanic characters at the end of the volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I can't believe how good it was. It's better than the previos installment 'Murder on the Titanic' which was also splendid. Anyone who is interested in the Titanic has to read this book.

The ill-fated maiden voyage of the great "unsinkable ship," carrying with it the hopes and dreams of humankind in its massive decks and luxurious cabins, may have started in England, but it ended in catastrophe and despair off the coast of Halifax, Canada. A touching reminder of the fallibility of man-made machines, the repercussions of the loss of the Titanic are still felt today. This heart-warming collection of stories tells of the intimate connection that Canada has with one of the most resounding tragedies of the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars finding out about titanic sister ships
to me titanic and her sister ships were just flawly made.this book show how they were book and the inside story shipping business of early 20th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source of information
One of the nice consequences of Cameron's blockbuster ( I didn't like it much) is the number of books that have come out about the tragedy , the ship and her sisters.

This is one of the biggest. And a must for anybody interested in the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Olympic-class photo reference book
If one is seeking a comprehensive book on the Olympic-class liner, this volume is vital to one's collection. Many rarely-printed images are offered alongside the popular pictures of Olympic, the lesser-photographed Titanic, as well as the even less-imaged Britannic. Many of the pictures are of Olympic, from her keel-laying through her fitting out, being the first of the three sisters launched. For those interested in the Titanic's building, launch and outfitting, where images of ship #401 are not in existence, Olympic, hull #400 helps bring a better visualization of Harland & Wolff's work to put these vessels on the sea.

A word of caution to those looking for a flawless historical reference guide - the book's captions are woven with mid-identifications; all three sisters are mis-labeled throughout the book, and a photograph of a Cunard hospital ship is wrongly referred to as Britannic. Despite the snafus in editing, the pictures alone puts this book on my shelf right next to "Titanic, An Illustrated History", "The Last Days of Titanic", and "Ghosts of the Abyss".

5-0 out of 5 stars titanic and her sisters olympic and britannic
This is a very very good book. aside from some spelling errors and as stated before errors in comparisons,The book covers the idea before the construction, the way the ships were constructed, the seatrials and how the mechanicals work and the history about each Olympic class ship starting with the launch of the Olympic and the life of the Olympic and then moves on to the Titanic and the life of the titanic and then finaly the Britannic life with a portion of the aftermath hearing that J.Bruce Ismay responded to.very good book. tells more about how the engines works and how the engines were running at different rpm and how each rpm =`s a different speed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Titanic and Her Sisters Olympic and Britannic
It is a good book, well worth the price, but I have one complaint-it has a few errors in captions.

(For example, Titanic's aft Grand Staircase [not as grand as the forward one] was mistaken for Olympic's forward Grand Staircase.Yes, there are differences-Olympic's forward Grand Staircase was just as grand as Titanic's forward staircase.)

Aside from a few captioning errors, it is a wonderful book, a must have for an Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic enthusiast.Pictures are wonderful, saw so many things that couldn't be seen otherwise. ... Read more

Product Description
Is there any tale more thrilling than a shipwreck? Disaster at sea is an ever-present peril, inspiring ancient legends, great works of fiction, and countless yarns of deadly typhoons, vessels consumed by fire, and desperate castaways alone on an empty ocean. Before Homer composed the Odyssey, sailors were already telling their terrifying stories, and Anthony Brandt has culled only the very best for this essential and engrossing chronicle of shipwrecks through the ages.

Brandt's selections range from the apostle Paul to Mark Twain to the Titanic disaster. The Tragic History of the Sea draws from tales around the globe: the doomed Medusa, whose survivors were abandoned to their fate by a cowardly crew, to live on only in a famous painting in the Louvre; the infamous Essex and her fatal cruise which inspired Melville's Moby Dick; and the harrowing wreck of the Wager, which left the earlier Lord Byron, the poet's kinsman, starving on Patagonia's bleak shores.

A riveting anthology of high adventure and astonishing survival against all odds, this storm-tossed voyage through history's gales and across unforgiving seas represents the best of a storytelling tradition that goes back centuries. Each extraordinary tale is linked to the next by Brandt's expert annotations and commentary, which sets them in context, provides a wealth of maritime and literary background and places this volume of shipwreck tales in a class by itself. ... The sinking of the Titanicand Great Sea Disasters is an exciting collection of first-hand stories describing the catastrophe of Titanic's maiden voyage as told by its survivors shortly after the ship sank. Origonally written and published in 1912, Logan Marshall's book was the first attempt to solve the mystery of the accident and relieve the heartache which it stirred internationally. Marshall narrates the personal stories of Titanic's passangers before, during and after the sinking of the ill-fated ship.

This book takes us all back, to understand the emotions of our ancesters from a not-so-comfortable distance. Listen to the voices of real passangers tell their own stories. ... Read more

This book was purchased as a gift for my 9-year old grandson, who is fascinated with and amazingly knowledgeable about the Titanic. The book is very precise in its information and done well. He also liked the inclusion of information about other famous shipwrecks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salesman's Samples or Dummy Books
What you have here is a salesman's samples or dummy books, which have also been called "blads," were used by the itinerant agents of subscription publishers to entice customers to agree to purchase a copy of a work in advance of delivery. This form of marketing was common in America during the years just before and after the Civil War. A typical salesman's sample consists of sample sheets in a sample binding. Sometimes these sheets are in a prepublication state and thus may have bibliographic interest. A customer could choose among alternative styles of binding, and a sample book usually includes the spines of available styles mounted inside the covers. The sample book might also include a printed prospectus describing the virtues of the work or edition with recommendations from well-known persons. Most specimen books also include blank forms on which the salesman entered the names, addresses, sometimes occupations, and the number of copies his subscribers agreed to purchase. Subscription forms can provide demographic information on book ownership, if not on actual readership.

Hope that helps :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Comparing book with the Memorial Edition of 1912
I find the reviews and the editor of the corrent listed book "Sinking of the Titanic Thrilling Stories Told by Survivors" interesting. My own copy is Blue Cloth with the same type of picture on the cover only the ship is going in the direction of the spine.

My copy is called:MEMORIAL EDITION SINKING OF THE TITANIC THRILLING STORIES TOLD BY SURVIVORS and story authored by Jay Henry Mowbray, Ph.D..,LL.D. and published by The Mintor Company, Harrisburg, Pa. Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1912, by Geo. W. Burton, The Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington D.C., U.S.A.

This is a very interesting likeness to my own copy and if it is as interesting to read, is excellent study of human nature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parent's Copy
My father, before retiring, was an insurance saleman.Sometime in the early '60's, (I am now 48), a customer gave him what was an original hard-copy edition of this book (published in 1912).Although the cover isn't in the greatest shape, it is still usable. It was this book and the early '50's movie, Titanic, with Barbara Stanwick and Clifton Webb, that started a 40 some year interest in the events surrounding the Titanic, before, during and after her sinking. My interest has at least remained the same or increased.

I find that the book has many interesting black & white pictures and towards the end lists other sea disasters up until that time.

It also has a some information on the investigation of the sinking in it.

If for no other reason, the fact that it came out the same year as the sinking is worthy of interest.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Shameless Hatchet Job
I was utterly appalled at Spignesi's relentless hatchet job against George Tulloch or shall I amend that to the late George Tulloch who I remembered as a soft-spoken individual who didn't have a mean or petty bone in his body.I certainly didn't recognize this flamboyant, money grubbing huckster portrayed by Spigneisi who sought only to profit off Titanic's artifacts and who only wanted to unceremoniously yank the Titanic up one piece at a time. The late George Tulloch was a good, decent man who sought to enlighten the world by bringing the Titanictolife once again through the very ordinary things Titanic's passengers and crewcasually used on a daily basis. This isn't grave robbing or plundering--if it was than there would be no museums open to educate people about the ways our ancestors lived, worked and died.George sacrificed a great deal to make his dreams a reality and I think the last third of Spignesi's book was stupid and cruel beyond belief. As a Titanic researcher myself, I am also sick and tired of Bob Ballard's saint act--it's worn thin.Bob Ballard has also profited off the Titanic through books and lectures andyet gets a free pass because he has an eternal halo over his head.

Spignesi's book sounded so promising and becameso very disappointing thanks to his well-orchestrated smear campaign against the late George Tulloch who, sadly, lost his battle with cancer in January, 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stands above the rest
This really is a complete book about the Titanic. It includes chapters such as: 'A complete chronicle of the Titanic disaster' that lists what happened nearly every minute of the fateful night; 'mysteries of the Titanic - a century of secrets'; 'Titanic 1997' which tells about James Cameron's movie; and 'The quest of the century' which details Dr. Robert Ballards' discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. Also the book includes a complete reprinting of the 1898 novella that seems to have predicted the Titanic disaster.

This book is really great for anyone interested in the Titanic. It is fascinating, well written and detailed. One of the great things about this book is that you can read the chapters that interest you (in any order) without missing anything by skipping parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Titanic tome!
It was no surprise that the theatrical release of James Cameron's 1997 Christmas blockbuster spawned the publishing of many different fictional novels as historical books centering around the events of April 14th, 1912. Out of the literally hundreds of books on the subject, "The Complete Titanic" is the most informative and entertaining, from its historical content to the details surrounding the making of and release of the popular film. With pages of photographs interspersed among chapters divided into sections, the book is a highly admirable way to distribute information on a widely growing phenomenon that has taken Hollywood and its followers by storm. Not to be missed, "The Complete Titanic" is an excellent read and resource for movie and historical buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Analysis of the Titanic's Sinking
George Behe performs a first-rate analysis of some of the most controversial aspects of the sinking of the Titanic, gathering together pieces of evidence which indicate that important aspects of the sinkingwere covered up by the White Star Line after the sinking.Make no mistakeabout it -- this is not some sensationalist diatribe, but awell-researched, carefully documented study. It's a small book, but animportant contribution to the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Behe gives us a profound look at one of the greatest trragedies of the 20th century. Its well worth the price and well worth the time to read

5-0 out of 5 stars One of, if not the best of Titanic books ever!
George Behe has written the best Titanic book. He has done thorough research in his subject and has come up with some very concrete conclusions about that tragic night.

George has taken the results both Inquiriesand some additional investigation and come to a very startling conclusion. Was the White Star Line negligent? Was "someone" trying to coverup certain facts pertaining to the navigation of the ship? These and manymore questions are answered here in this book.

As the title suggests,Titanic was an accident just waiting to happen.I highly recommend thisvery important book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing look at what really may have occurred that night
George Behe has written an original here, not a retelling of the usual stories but a look at primary sources, carefully researched and analyzed, in connection with the mystery of the Titanic's speeding headlong into an icefield in spite of warnings received and posted.

Fred Fleet, the lookout, was quoted by many on the Carpathia as having complained of his earlier warnings re icebergs having been ignored by the bridge.

What is the real story? In this small, but weighty volume, Behe introduces us to those who talked about it then, who were quoted or misquoted in newspaper articles, and weaves a tale of politics and intrigue. He details the large flaws of reporting while getting to the core of the stories, including verypossible White Star arrangements with Fleet and others to maintain silence.Whether or not one agrees with the conclusions, Behe makes a rather persuasive case for a night of truths withheld, thoughit's up to the reader how persuasive it is.

The references andcitations are unusually thorough.Virtually nothing is said without aspecific reference to an original source.

HIGHLY recommended. One ofthe top books on the Titanic and the puzzles of that night.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the Titanic
George Behe's book is a through examination of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy in 1912. In looking at transcripts and eyewitness accounts, Behe makes some very telling conclusions as to why the ship collided with the iceberg. For those seriously interested in the real details, this book is a must to read. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Numerous Errors in the Text Sink this Book
This is a fairly brief book, which takes just four chapters to tell the entire Titanic story, plus a fifth chapter on the discovery of the wreck. There is quick one page look at other nautical disasters. One plus is that there are reference notes attributing sources, unusual in a book for young readers. There is also a short list for further reading; oddly the books mentioned in the notes are not listed in the bibliography.

Still, at just 48 pages, this book seems very expensive at its retail price of $18.95. Plus I had some serious issues with the text. The writing style is in a fairly sterile, just-the-facts format that actually makes the event seem rather dull. Worse are the many mistakes I found in the text. Here is a list of the major errors I caught:

On page 12 the author states "Even if three of the sixteen watertight compartments became filled with water, the ship would still stay afloat". Actually the ship could stay afloat if any two compartments were flooded, or if any three of just the first five compartments.

Also on this page is Captain Smith's famous quote "I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that". The author insinuates that Smith is talking about Titanic, but the captain gave this quote years earlier about an entirely different ship.

On page 23, there is the statement "The ship's general alarm was never sounded. The alarm might have caused a panic among the passengers.....". Titanic did not have an alarm, general or otherwise, to sound.

On page 25 the text has Second Officer Lightoller in charge of the starboard lifeboats and First Officer Murdoch in charge of the port boats. Actually, the reverse is correct, Lightoller on the port side, Murdoch on the starboard.

On page 32 there is the statement "Boilers within the ship exploded, killing crewmen and passengers who were still below". There is no solid evidence that any boilers exploded and a great deal of proof they did not.

Then on page 33, "The Carpathia shot flares into the sky to alert other ships that the survivors had been found".Wrong again. Carpathia did fire off flares, but she did so to alert the Titanic's passengers and crew that help was rushing to their aid.

Again on page 33, "Many of the lifeboats were close to sinking by the time the Carpathia got to them".There was an overturned collapsible men were standing on that was in serious trouble, and one of the other lifeboats was so overcrowded that it was wallowing dangerously; does that qualify as many?

Page 35 " The White Star Line hired a ship from Nova Scotia to search for bodies....".In reality, four ships were sent out for this purpose, not just one.

Finally on page 37 is this, "During the hours after the collision, the Californian was the only ship that passed near the Titanic". In fact the Californian was stopped for the night. You can argue (any many do!) whether Californian was close enough to help or not, but stating that the ship `passed' the Titanic is not only wrong, its misleading.

Because of the uninspired style of the writing, and the many errors in the text, I cannot recommend this book to any but the most avid completist collectors. Especially at that high retail price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A detailed presentation for the time frame advertised
I bought this book from Amazon because it presented a detailed chronolgy of events that occurred in the limited time frame covered by this book. Other books on this subject cover this period of time but not as detailed as this one. The information presented is collated from many different original sources and is presented in a fashion as if the reader was on board the Titanic during this fateful period of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars LAST TWENTY MINUTES
Those taken by the final moments of Titanic will find plenty to like in Quinn's book.It all starts at two am, with many believing the ship will stay afloat and the worst avoided.Minute by minute the situation worsens and becomes more desperate, until the final plunge we all know is coming.

This is not a very long book, and each chapter covers a five minute period extending to 2:20.But it is supplemented with insets discussing questions about the sinking. The author's illustrations add considerably as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved This Book
I wondered across this book in the search and got it.The illustrations and the story are great.I recommend it to everyone. It is one of my favorite Titanic books. The paintings are so great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Titanic Book
As I have read over 135 books on Titanic, this one is very high on my list of great Titanic books.Paul Quinn brings an immediacy to the disaster. If you have ever wanted to know what it was like in the last 20 minutes ofthe great ships life, this book is a 'must read'.Paul also does the greatship justice as far as his illustrations go.Check this one out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, Good Story
This is a really interesting book. There are paintings in it that I never saw before that show all kinds of intersting scenes from that night. It is mainly about the time period between 2:00 and 2:20 a.m. when the ship wasgoing down.

I was really drawn into the paintings of people rushing upthe boat deck during the ship's final demise.

This book is definitely athumbs up! ... Read more
