The Tlingit Indians of southeastern Alaska are known for their totem poles, Chilkat blankets, and ocean-going canoes. Nora Marks Dauenhauer is a cultural emissary of her people and now tells the story of her own life within the context of her community's. Life Woven with Song re-creates in written language the oral tradition of the Tlingit people as it records memories of Dauenhauer's heritage--of older relatives and Tlingit elders, of trolling for salmon and preparing food in the dryfish camps, of making a living by working in canneries. She explores these recurring themes of food and land, salmon and rainforest, from changing perspectives--as a child, a mother, and a grandmother--and through a variety of literary forms. In prose, Dauenhauer presents stories such as "Egg Boat"--the tale of a twelve-year-old girl fishing the North Pacific for the first time alone--and an autobiographical piece that reveals much about Tlingit lifeways. Then in a section of short lyrical poems she offers crystalline tributes to her land and people. In a concluding selection of plays, Dauenhauer presents three Raven stories that were adapted as stage plays from oral versions told in Tlingit by three storytellers of her community. These plays were commissioned by the Naa Kahidi Theater and have been performed throughout America and Europe. They take the form of a storyteller delivering a narrative while other members of the cast act and dance in masks and costumes. Collectively, Dauenhauer's writings form an "autoethnography," offering new insight into how the Tlingit have been affected by modernization and how Native American culture perseveres in the face of change. Great slice of culture
This book is a great part of Tlingit culture, that can be shared with everyone. I'm not of Tlingit lineage, but even I get something out of this book. The stories give the reader a sense of what the Tlingit people cherish. And it also offers the student of Tlingit (which is my area of interest) some interesting reading material.

Wonderful reading
I am quite moved by this book. All the speeches give me pause as I am a Tlingit and what this book is about is a big part of the present Tlingit culture. Again, this book is a part of our Tlingit Literature class. I have the privelege of not just having the authors as the professors of the class but many Tlingit elders who either were present for some of the "potlatches" where the speeches were made or who knew the orators in the book. ... 3 Volumes...Much Repeated Text
Great books...BUT....when you buy all 3, you will note that the over 1/3 of each book on culture and tools is repeated again and again in all 3. .These are not thick books, so what should have been a chapteris actually a separate book.So you will spenda fair chunk of change getting this unique information.Well written and great photos step by step.Just realize this limitation.

I cant beleive it
I cant believe this book is out of print this is one of my favorite books. I reread it all the time.Clearie has to move to alaska to live with relatives she has never met she has many adventures including landing some creep in jail. i love this book.

I Think This was a Good Book!!
The Eagle's Shadow is about a girl who goes to live in Alaska with her reletives for a year. Its a lot more than that but i dont wanna give away the book. Does not disappoint. Don't wait to order.
I wanted to purchase this book a year ago, but I waited because I wanted to see if I could find it at my local bookstore. I hadn't read it and prefer to look through a book before I commit to buying it. Well, Barnes and Noble didn't have it and couldn't order it because it comes from a very small publishing company. By this time, Amazon ran out. I was kicking myself. I looked online to see if I could find it at another retailer. The only copies available were being sold for $75 because of its limited availability! I couldn't believe it. I signed up to receive an email message from Amazon when it became available again and promptly ordered it when they had a copy.

I just received my copy and I'm delighted. I am a third grade teacher in Washington and we are about to start a unit on coastal Native Americans. This book is perfect! It was worth the one year wait, but don't make the same mistake I did. Order it right away!

Wonderful book from a former teacher
I just found this book recently and discovered it was written by a teacher I had in high school.She was an inspiring and highly creative teacher that made you love what you were learning.I'm so excited to have my children reading books written by a former teacher of mine.
I'm on the hunt to get the rest of her books.Thank you Ms. Vanasse!

Magical Totem Tale
My 4 year old and I have read this book over and over.The illustrations are wonderful, the concept of a totem pole being based on a story is clear.The totem pole takes itself apart at night and my daughter tries to remember the story the pole is based on in order to put the pole together again in the right order as the sun rises.

Captivated by this original story line ... and the art is lovely!A MUST READ/VIEW!
As I've often said, what intrigues me most about a book is a "catchy" title and an extremely original storyline. This book has that and much more!

I'm amazed at the simplicity of the plot, but how cute, clever, and creative it is.Who would have thought about the characters carved into a totem pole coming to life and fussing over their order on the pole???ONLY A CREATIVE, TALENTED AUTHOR ... That's who!

You just HAVE to read this clever book by Deb Vanasse ... and the fabulous art by the equally-talented illustrator is marvelous, too.I understand the illustrator has some books under submission; I hope you get them published, Erik.

Incredible artwork!
After seeing the incredibly intricate and lovely paper cut out artwork, I ordered every book I could find by this author/artist. If you didn't even read the story, the book would be worth it for the art! But the story: wonderful! I also really liked the last page, in which the author describes in minute detail any variation from the original legend, so there is good historical info there, too. I highly recommend all these books! The only negative was that I expected to receive a cassette tape with it, but there was none. Buy it anyway! You will be delighted.

Children's story with a serious message.
The illustrations are all from cut out paper -- very intricate and visually interesting. The story includes danger (readers should be ready to deal with drowning, and attack on a village by cannons from a ship). Has a message about grieving the loss of a good, native, natural life to the influx of crass europeans. Beautiful imagery about a brave and wise young woman.
