Product Description

For more than forty years, the Haugen Norwegian–English Dictionary has been regarded as the foremost resource for both learners and professionals using English and Norwegian. With more than 60,000 entries, it is esteemed for its breadth, its copious grammatical detail, and its rich idiomatic examples. In his introduction, Einar Haugen, a revered scholar and teacher of Norwegian to English speakers, provides a concise overview of the history of the language, presents the pronunciation of contemporary Norwegian, and introduces basic grammatical structures, including the inflection of nouns and adjectives and the declension of verbs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Norwegian-English Dictionary
This Dictionary is complete and clearly defines the two languages of Bokmal and Nynorsk. It was recommended by my language instructor as the Dictionary to have in my library.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Big Green Book
I got this book because of all the positive reviews. For those who are just starting with the language, I would say get another dictionary (or online service) with English to Norwegian translations so that you can cross reference and move about more easily in this book. This will get you deeper into the specifics of the words you need as you plow through this Norwegian to English book. This book is well done and a great reference, but for me, it would be a much better reference tool to be English to Norwegian, to be a physically bigger book - the font size will make you search for your glasses, a magnifying glass and a really strong light after longer periods of use, and to lay out the definitions and phrase variations a little more cleanly. It's easy to get lost in the long lists of some of the common derivations of a word. If you need Norwegian language reference tools, this is the one to get, but be prepared to dig and scrape and to cross reference with another source so you can be sure you actually have the word you intended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Norwegian-English dictionary
The dictionary is excellent but it was very late in delivery.I emailed the source 3 times and finally got the product about 4 weeks after it was supposedly mailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Norwegian - English Dictionary
The Norwegian to English Dictionary by Einar Haugen was everything I needed and asked for, and at the right price, with superbly prompt shipping.Haugen is world renowned for this dictionary; the ONLY drawback is that it is not English to Norwegian as well, but Einar Haugen produces the most and best examples of the word(s) used in context of any other editor, an absolute must for English speaking folks learning Norwegian.

5-0 out of 5 stars good, but needs a companion
Like the other review say, the entries really are very useful, and the introduction is great for quickly reminding yourself about grammar and pronunciation. However, for someone beginning in Norwegian you need an English-Norwegian source also. I'm now browsing to find one!

Great book, but it needs a companion dictionary! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful french dictionary
This revised french book is formatted specifically for the kindle and it really helped being able to quickly find the phrases I needed to translate. Has all of the basic translations from english to french. Very helpful for when I traveled.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Traveling to France or Learning French
This book gives you all the phrases you need from the Airport, to the taxi, to the hotel, to the meetings, to the dinners, and to the bar. And if you drink too much it tells you how to talk to the police, emergencies, etc.A must have if you are traveling in France, or need to learn basic French that to get you by. It has also be formatted for Kindle, and is easy to navigate, which make the extra price worth it.All the other ones out there are hard to navigate, and find the words when you need it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not French to English!
The book description is unclear and undescriptive. The reviewer who said this is a French to English book is WRONG.It is an English to French book--you want to say something, you look it up and the book tells you how to say it in French.

I suppose, if that is what you need, this book may well suffice.

I'd have been much better served if Amazon gave more complete information and if the previous reviewer, on who's review I based my purchase, knew what he was talking about.(You might want to take a look at this person's other reviews.)

I'm giving it 3 stars to be fair to the book.Like I said, it might be fine if it's what you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Navigate French to English Book
This book has been revised and it's now easier and faster to navigate straight to the word or phrase you need while traveling in france and need quick french translations and easy phrases to get around. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Easy to use
The dictionary is well formatted, easy to use.It is quite heavy so certainly not a travel dictionary but it is excellent for home-use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This is about the only reference you need to learn German. The International Phonetic Alphabet, now used in most Oxford dictionaries, helps pronunciation a lot. The grammatical sketch at the back of the book saves you buying a 'Teach Yourself German Grammar' book. The new typeface and layout is very clear. The entries give precise definitions and include many examples in sentences, so that you get a feeling for the word's function. Note though that it is big and heavy, which looks good on a bookshelf but is not very portable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of German-English Dictionaries Currently Available
As a professor of German studies at a college and a reviewer of German-English and English-German books and dictionaries, I can vouch for the finely tuned qualities of this masterful work. With the thoroughness, that Duden is known for and the expertise of the publishing of Oxford, thisbook has all the new spelling rules, phonetic pronunciation guides, awonderfully complete guide for German as well as English correspondence, useful phrases, and comprehensive guides for English and German grammar. While the book is heavy, it is for desk and reference work viable andhighly recommended.Oxford might have done well to print the book on thenew, thinner paper that I have seen modern, rather bulky Books such as theBOOK OF MORMON and the BIBLE printed on. Their thickness has been reducedby almost one half the bulk and thus are easier to place in one'sbriefcase. For desk and reference work, however, nothing on the market atpresent can equal it for those reasons I have listed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Dictionary for Students or Scholar
For every German student, a friend in need is this ditionary indeed.Simple definition and easy cross reference are very helpful for begginers, and various idioms and multiple entries are for experts. But you may referthe dictionary only at home, because it is too heavy to tote (about 2kg! ). So if you have to bring it daily to your classroom or office, perhaps youneed another smoller one, with this excellent dictionary at your home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to learn spanish
I actually thought this book was very helpful when I visited Mexico recently. Everyday Spanish phrases that were essential for me to enjoy the trip, this book had. I had not taken a Spanish class since high school, so my recollection of the language was minimal. This was a great tool to bring to refresh my memory. The fact that it was all on one page helped a lot too, because I didn't have to flip through pages to try to find the translations I was looking for. Quick and handy guide to speaking Spanish!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy Book for Traveling to Mexico, Latin America, and Spain
I bought and used this book for traveling in Mexico and it has everything I need. There are all the phrases from phrases needed at the airport, the taxi, the restaurants, for emergencies, for shopping, ordering drinks at the bar, meeting people, and more.

I don't know what phrases one of the reviewers here was looking for, but it's all here and easy to find and formatted for kindle.I think some people's motives for writing bad reviews should be checked. Most if not all the other travel translation books are not formatted correctly or easy to find the phrases you need. After further research, this is a revised version that was specifically designed for kindle.

The comment that this book has very little phrases is not accurate. In fact the unformatted version of this book remains one of the top sellers, making this one even more valuable for kindle users for the ease of use, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great spanish reference book
The setup of this book may be a bit difficult to navigate, which is why I prefer the revised edition, but this edition was just as handy to me when I needed to quickly find a word to translate. All the basic phrases and words to overcome the language barrier between english and spanish.

3-0 out of 5 stars A thin book
It has 29 pages (yes, the table of contents shows page numbers, which don't help in a Kindle! There is no way to go to a particular page without making a bookmark for yourself, so it isn't much good for actual use in situations where you need to say something. It looks like what you could get for a dollar at a tourist stand, or download and print out from the web. I was not impressed, and I will probably throw it away and try for something I can use in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Dictionary
This is one of the better Spanish-English (and English-Spanish) dictionaries around. The book is concise, plain, useable, and portable.I like that it provides valuable information on verb conjugations, spellings, irregular verbs, etc.It also includes a list of common idioms and some information on the differences between the language between nations.A weakness for some readers is the smallness of the print - hardly unusual for translation dictionaries that fit into your pants pocket.Still, overall, this is a decent choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Other than some scribbling by the previous owner, the book is in good shape and will be useful as my husband and I continue learning Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great (thick) pocket dictionary
It's worked well for a lot of travel in South America. It's reasonably compact, quite complete, and reasonably priced. What's not to like?

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough for a pocket-sized dictionary
I've lived in the Rio Grande Valley (Hidalgo County, Texas) for 30 years, most of the time residing about a 20-minute drive to the Mexican border.I had taken three years of Spanish in high school before moving here from Michigan, but like many Northerners, I wasn't bilingual because of a lack of exposure to Spanish and little opportunity to practice it.

When I moved here, I made up my mind I was going to get bilingual.I watched a lot of Mexican TV stations, listened to Spanish language hit songs, watched Spanish language movies. And I interacted with a lot of people who spoke no English at all -- which forced me to speak Spanish.

And in the beginning years, I did most of it with this little gem of a dictionary in my pocket or purse. For a pocket sized dictionary I found it to be quite thorough, and was usually able to find the words I heard and didn't know.

This dictionary is not meant to be the only one for a Spanish language student. But it has a practical, comprehesive vocabulary, and includes a number of other important items about phonics in both languages. Add to that a useful listing of proverbs, expressions and idioms for both languages, and you have a gem of a resource.

I'm bilingual now, and I owe a lot of it to having this fine little book.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The strongest dictionary out there
This is the dictionary we were recommended to buy in College Spanish.I recommend any language learner do a couple of things.First, go read How to Learn Any Language.
Ok, now that you've done that and come back to read this, here's what I recommend for you: get several dictionaries. That way you can check back and forth against the books to see the various translations provided. Then, based on all your target language reading, you can decide which word is the best, most nuanced word to use in your situation.

This dictionary routinely had the most recognized words from my readings and conversations with native speakers. It had the least argument-quotient.
It's clearly laid out and dense with words so any word you need should be in here (remember to check for conjugations, etc.).

This dictionary won't let you down. ... Read more

Product Description
Twenty-five years in the making, this is a dictionary, with English equivalents, of the modern written Mongolian language, in Cyrllic script and orthography, as used in the Mongolian People's Republic. Consisting of some 20,000 main entries and numerous secondary entries, it has been compiled on the basis of reading and excerpting current printed material. This material has included primarily the national newspaper Unen, other newspapers, various popular, semi-popular and academic magazines and journals, and books - mostly non-fiction - in various fields of interest, and the entries are therefore very up to date. Two unusual features of the dictionary enhance its usefulness. Occasionally some short quotations from original sources have been included, in order to promote the practical understanding of the language. Secondly, wherever possible the Tibetan originals of the Tibetan loan-words have been given, in order to facilitate further research. Previously published but only with the aim of assisting in the formulation of English equivalents of the Mongolian words and expressions. They have not been drawn on as source of vocabulary, and no entries have been copied in total from other dictionaries. ... Read more

Product Description
This practical, easy-to-use Navajo dictionary is intended primarily for Navajo children learning to read and write the language in bilingual classrooms. It presents over 1,500 noun and 330 verb entries, all selected because they are words used in and around the school. But the audience for this book has always been larger than just youngsters: it has proven useful for anyone wanting to learn Navajo—adults and children alike.

For each of the thirty-six letters in the Navajo alphabet, this dictionary provides first a listing of nouns followed by verbs. For most of the nouns and all of the verbs, an illustration is also included to aid in learning by providing a visual reference. While the dictionary is organized using the Navajo alphabet, the index gives non-native speakers a complete list of all the English translations from Navajo.

Originally published in 1983 as part of a Ramah Navajo School Board, Inc., initiative to develop bilingual educational materials in the Navajo language, this book has remained in print and helped an entire generation of students learn Navajo. Its re-publication by the University of New Mexico Press, in cooperation with the Ramah Navajo School Board, Inc., helps fulfill each institution’s respective mission of promoting cultural literary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Navajo Language Learners
I collect Navajo Language books, and as a biligaana learner of Navajo, I find this particular dictionary especially helpful in conjugating verbs.I am thankful that the University of New Mexico Press reprinted this book, as I have been trying to find a copy for years.Alyse was one of my teachers at Northern Arizona University, and my friend. She was one of the first Navajos to undertake writing and publishing a book of this magnitude for Navajo Language learners. Her joy and enthusiasm are missed. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Item
Sir,

The item send to me is a downgraded one which is not worth the amount of the sale value of the book. It cost only $2.95 against $8.99 and the mailing is only $0.51 as compared to $3.95 asked. I went to Barnes and Nobles and bought a different one much better that what I received for a lesser also.

I can't recommend this merchant to anyone because I don't want to be blamed later. I emailed him yesterday but he just ignored it.

Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars English/Spanish Dictionary
This program could use an update, it seems to be a complete dictionary but it does not have a spell check, or a program to assist you in spelling words. If you are trying to translate a word you hear in Spanish and you research it to see that the word means and you do not spell the word correctly, it will come back with negative results. It would be great if the dictionary came back with a list of words that were close to what you wanted to choose from, but if you do not spell the word correctly, you will be out of luck. There are a lot of words both in English and in Spanish that people cannot spell and people use a dictionary to find out how to spell the word.... well this dictionary will not help you out there.Given the choice, I would not spend my money on this book, especially since it cost so much. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good french translator
This french translation book is handy to use for beginners phrases and the necessary translations to get you day to day while traveling in france/french speaking countries. If the format is hard to read with the kindle there is a revised version as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Close to Useless
I take students to France every year and was looking for something they could put on their iPods and which would be a useful reference. "What do I have to lose?" I said to my self. The answer is the $ I spent on this pitiful little, so-called "ultimate" reference. It's too small and has pronunciation spellings that take up much of the space and would produce weird-sounding French. I can't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This handy book is very easy to use.I don't understand a complaint that the book has no shortcuts to sections. That's Kindles job, not the book.
How is the book suppose to create a shortcut to a section.
If you are looking to have a traveling companion to France, you can't get any better.

1-0 out of 5 stars not ultimate
i don't speak french, and was hoping to have a handy dictionary on my kindle for an upcoming trip.I don't think this will be useful for that purpose. There are no shortcuts to sections, and for some reason the phonetics are missing from later entries.not what I was hoping for, but the guide may be more helpful if you know some basic french to begin with. ...
