Product Description

Includes FREE planning and background information. The vast majority of the countryside in Nepal is still inaccessible by road, hidden behind endless ridges and valleys and criss-crossed by a network of trails trodden for centuries by porters, traders, pilgrims, mountaineers and locals travelling from village to town, plains to hills, Nepal to Tibet. Until you’ve hit this network of trails on foot you can’t truly say you’ve experienced the essence of Nepal. The backdrop to these trails is some of the most spectacular and beautiful scenery in the world. Nepal enjoys a near monopoly on the world’s highest peaks – eight of the 10 highest are found here – and there is absolutely nothing like strolling from teahouse to teahouse under crystal-clear Himalayan skies as an 8000m peak towers over you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not essential for your Africa trip
I purchased a used copy of the most recent edition of this book in preparation for a trip to Africa. In the past, I have been thrilled with LP Trekking guides. Their New Zealand book was invaluable in helping me find trails and plan a trip. East Africa, however, falls short. The book focuses on Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Because I already had a copy of LP East Africa, I found almost no useful information in this book. In my opinion, the information in the trekking guide is duplicated in the East Africa guide. I would recommend just getting the East Africa book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountsafarisadventure Trekking in Kenya is Good.
To the auther , davidelse/ david wenk.
Thankyou very much for your advice in your book trekking in east africa , which i used wheni was travellingin kenya and Tanzania.IWould like to tell you my exeprience Horiday in Kenya with Mountsafaris Adventure, and hoping you will consider this smallcompany.
I really had a great time with mountsafaris adventure.
I cansay that kenya is a nice and safe country to travel. I did campingsafaris and trekking mount kenyafor 6 days sirimon chogoria route ,oh beautiful vegetation. Guide and porters were great helper , food wasnice, The trip was well organised. Mountsafaris are trusted, as i sent them 1500 us dollar deposite for my 3weeks horiday, and everything work perfect .They booked the , hotel , organise everything for my trip , so when i come everything was ready .They picked me from the airport on time , direct to the hotel ,following the trip start.
Camping was fun , Mountsafaris staff were friendly , very safe with them both on the mountains and on safari . Their camps have all facility.

Mountsafarisprices are fair . Their prices are all incrusive , like , pick ups from the airport, park fees, transport by landcruser with open roof. tour driver ,food three meals a day, cook .
. I can definitely recommend Mountsafaris adventurethey'recheaper compared to others companys ,they haveGood services ,knowledgeable and reliable Tour Operatorsand offer a really good range of trekkingmount kenya , camping and lodge safaris .

thankyou ,again continue writting more advice on your book as they are really helping the travellers , You need to also to be considering some of the company who are doing goodservices for the tourist.
Some of the companyslike Mountsafarisare goodbut they are not mention on the your book. I come to know mountsafaris throuhg a friend who did trekking mount kenya with them .
Congraturation for the work you are doing .

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but not enough on the trekking peaks
I found this book a good introduction to anyone expecting to go trekking in East Africa. It goes over, in substantial detail, all the factors you may face (medicine, visas, hotels, transportation, tours, trails, etc.).However, there is very little on the trekking peaks, which I thought would be the most interesting portion of the book. For example, on Mt Kilimanjaro there are only maybe 5-6 pages, with only an overview description of the routes. If you are looking for overall trekking in East Africa, this is good book, but if you are looking for info on the trekking peaks, there are other, more specific guides, that may be more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential luggage items:meds, visas and Lonely Planet
I used this book to plan and complete aKilimanjaro climb, a Tanzanian safari (Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara) and a trip up the coast of Kenya. The book was more than helpful; it wasessential to the success of the trip. Helpful information is complete, accurate and relevant:exactly what you will find in the Lonely PlanetTrekking guide. The helpful information -- routes, housing, food, currency, gear, etc. -- are tools to keep you safe, healthy, prepared andeven comfortable. The essential information is much more:it gives you afeel for where you are going and what's important about being there. Descriptions of languages, religions, customs, history, geography, geology, climate, etc., gave me a deeper awareness of the countries I was navigatingthrough. This book is strong on both counts. Here's an example:Thevocabulary lists were really helpful in opening conversations with staff, villagers andborder officials. However, the book's essential advice wasto just try your best at speaking Swahili, and the people you meet willrespond very warmly to your having made the effort. The results wereheartwarming, and they opened the doors to other discoveries I could nothave made otherwise. The book itself is a valuable commodity.OnKilimanjaro I leafed through the chapters for maps and plant descriptions. The book so fascinated my guide that I gave him my copy as a partingpresent (though I couldn't part with it on the climb since it was the onlymap & route description we had!) Note that the Lonely Planet Trekkingbooks do not promise to be field guides for the areas they describe:bringanother volume(s) to help identify the flora and fauna you encounter. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for Inspiration, Very Poor as a Guide
While this book may be interesting to those who have not been to Russia/CIS yet and have no other sources of information, those who have and were expecting more detailed practical info on trekking will be sorely dissapointed.
It does have lots of background information on various regions that are of interest to hikers, but unfortunately it is EXTREMELY thin on practical details.
It tends to write pages about how interesting a region is in general, before finally moving on to "describe" a single trek of several days' length in maybe 10 lines or so! This is particularly bad in the sections about Asian Russia - the European part is covered a bit better.
The maps and trail descriptions are all but useless for those planning to attempt the hikes on their own.
Finally, the general advice on travel/hiking in Russia in the introductory section is so out of date now - having been written more than a decade ago - that it is of very little help either.
All in all, if you want to read about how nice places await discovery out there, you will get your fill. Just don't expect this book to be of much help in actually trying to "discover" them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Take your city guide and TAKE THIS BOOK!
Now that I've been to Central Asia, I understand why the Lonely Planet guidebook refers to Maier's book so often. This is a unique perspective on getting off the beaten path. Her advice is inspiring and practical. Recommend it for anyone who wants to get out of the cities.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone going to Russia!
This woman has managed to see things that some of us, Russians, are unable to notice, for the reality we live in is too close to our eyes. This book gave me a rare pleasure to see our people and places in a new, clearer, nearly stereoscopic, light.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare author who understands Russia
Traveling Russia is like nowhere else in the world, and Maier is uniquely qualified to help make sense of it. This book was the most interesting and useful of the required reading for Peace Corps volunteers going there.

4-0 out of 5 stars an indispensible resource for getting into the mountains
I spent 5 weeks this summer traveling and mountaineering in Central Asia, primarily in the Tien Shan Mountains.Maier's guidebook, Trekking inRussia and Central Asia, was extraordinarily helpful for planning mytravels and choosing destinations while travelling. It provided theessential information I needed to get into mountains. The maps and trekdescriptions were almost always accurate, and the glossary in the appendix was very useful for breaking down language barriers. I'd rely on it againfor future trips. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but outdated.
This is a very useful summary of a decent number of day walks, hikes and treks throughout the Andes, from Venezuela all the way down to Tierra del Fuego. Its greatest value is as a starting point: if you're going to Bolivia and Peru, and want to do some medium difficulty hikes, you'll quickly be pointed in the direction of the best options. You'll then need to do more research to sort out the logistics, such as how to reach the trailhead, current conditions, and so forth.

But it's very out of date. For example, according to the book, you can hike the Inca Trail independently. It suggests doing the Paso de las Nubes as an international hike, boating across Chile's Lago Todos los Santos, taking a bus to Argentina's Puerto Frias (or walking) then walking south. In practice, that turns out to be very difficult, and it's much, much more practical to start in Pampa Linda, and walk north. And it fails to capture the current popularity of Torres del Paine's "W" path, and the ease with which it can be done due to provisions along the way.

Also, it fails to make use of any information available on the web, pointing you to local hiking clubs for maps, when there are easier options these days. It also makes little mention of trekking companies which run guided treks through many of these routes.

One further criticism is that it spreads itself too thin: by covering such an enormous territory, and such a range of difficulty, there aren't many options in each category. Looking for a straightforward 3 day hike in Bolivia, Peru or the Lake District? You can count them on one hand.

But it's a great starting point. ... Read more

This stunning guidebook, covering 26 treks and 18 climbing peaks, is an indispensable tool for both the experienced climber and the first-time trekker visiting the Andes - one of the world's greatest, yet least known, trekking destinations.Covering the range from Venezuela in the north to Patagonia in the south, the book offers clear, authoritative descriptions of treks - some short, two-day-hikes and other, more strenuous two-week treks. The guide is also crammed with practical information on travel, techniques and equipment, so visitors will have as safe and healthy a tour as possible.Top-class cartography and strip maps pinpoint every route and give a reliable idea of distance and timings. The book is further enhanced by more than 100 fantastic photographs. Fully updated for its second edition, the book also features an eye-catching new cover. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a climbing guide; more of a coffee table book
There are several shortcomings in the book that keep it from being a reliable and useful climbing guide. First, it is too bloody large and heavy to haul around, being printed on heavy paper stock so that the photos are pretty.Second, it was not well proofed, and a book that has three authors should have some luck in catching basic information errors if there were indeed three qualified persons involved.Instead, we believe that the errors in many of the simpler subjects point to the possibility of more grave errors in significant details.A modern and serious trekking or climbing guide would include detailed positional data, including topographic and GPS coordinates. These are generally lacking. There are also some fundamentally silly statements, such as "Bolivia is a relatively safe country."Bolivia? Safe? Perhaps compared to Colombia. But Bolivia is fraught with hazards ranging from generally poor health and hygiene, unsafe tourist accommodations, treacherous public transport, and considerable street crime in the cities, even if you don't accidentally end up in one of the coca-growing regions.(There is also a statement that Peru is relatively safe, so evidently the authors' perception of "relatively safe" is not shared with those from the civilized countries). In the Chilean portion of the book there are considerable errors, including one that describes going "clockwise" as a way to make the John Gardner pass "less of an uphill struggle."Anyone who has climbed this pass will attest that the western side is steeper and more slippery than the east side, so this book's recommendation is quite backward. Another part of the same chapter even seems to contradict this observation, leading us to think perhaps one author was not really talking to another. Similar errors persist throughout the book, along with misleading information, misspelling of Spanish words, internal inconsistencies, and then the absence of essential data that should have been included.Pretty pictures, though. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book; beginner be wary...
Trekking California is a beautifully presented book, with amazing photos, enticing descriptions and a selection of some of the finest treks in the Sierras and California. Everything that is said in the other reviews is true. The maps are beautifully rendered in shaded relief and great for planning, but they are inadequate for actual use. Bring a 7.5' topo of the area you are planning to explore. The on-trail segments are great; these trails are popular enough to be well-maintained and well-traveled. Please be cautious about the cross-country sections described in this book. For the most part, descriptions are very accurate, telling you how to circumnavigate cliff-outs and identifying landmarks. Yet, we found some descriptions completely underestimated. For example, in the Minarets area (Trek 10), the drop-down from Lake Catherine to the N. Fork of San Juaquim Riv. is very well described, and adequately labeled as Class 2. However, the hike back up through Ritter Pass was briefly mentioned, with no rating level. We found it to be Class 2 talus that was extremely loose and pretty steep; this can be verfied from TRs around the internet. It's true that other books around provide even less information (i.e. Secor, Moynier), but at least Secor rates it adequately as Class 2. But Richins presents a book that appears approachable to beginners, yet can potentially get you into trouble. I would suggest obtaining more beta for the cross-country sections through other sources from people who have done the trip you are planning via Richins.

Regardless, this is an amazing book; filling a niche of selecting some of the best long treks in California. The side-trips, variations to add or subtract mileage, and mountaineering options make this book invaluable to the experienced weekend warrior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
For a long time I thought Paul Richins' Mt. Whitney trail guide was the best contemporary Sierra guide book I had ever used, but along comes the deceptively titled "Trekking California" (also by Paul Richins) that establishes a new high water mark.

The title notwithstanding, this 285 page book covers 15 high sierra hikes of 7 days or less and 5 other trips in the Trinity Alps and along the northern coast. The routes cover both established trails (Class 1) and cross country treks (Class 2/3) and many incorporate a combination of the two.The book is organized with the standard "what to expect", "what to take", "what to do, if" type of information that either provides new and insightful tips or just takes up book pages depending on one's experience level; some might consider it superfulous.

What isn't superfulous, however are the beutifully rendered maps incorporated throughout the book, really some of the best for trail use (and I mean established trails, not cross country routes) I've seen.Coupled with the outstanding color photography this guide really surpasses the more comprehensive Sierra North/South series which had been the benchmark for years. Most of the trips include interesting side treks that can be mixed and matched to extend the journeys to 10 days or more without making them feel like a walk-in camping trip.I'm familiar with many of the southern sierra trips and have taken them in similar form.To my knowledge the information is accurate, though one must remember that a Class 1 trail route doesn't mean "easy walk"....some of these trips include significant elevation gain (and loss) within single days, so while the trail may be maintained and clear there will still be plenty of huffing and puffing involved; and most are at higher elevation trail heads to begin with. All would be advised to camp at least the first night at the trail head to aclimate to the altitude. While the trail maps included in the book are clear one shouldn't fail to take (and know how to use) appropriate USGS topo maps of the relevant quadrants.

The guide covers some of the most spectacular wilderness country still with us and the book is a wonderful intro to many of the most rewarding trips. This is one of those books that I would recommend getting two copies of....one to keep at home and read for planning purposes and another to "tear apart" and carry the relevant maps and information pages in your map case (or plastic freezer bag).Really, it's that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for those wanting moreout of the backcountry!
Great book with useful information for those wanting a little more out of their trips in backcountry of CA. Most of the book concentrates on The Sierras, which for me is a good thing. This book gives all the usefull information needed for making you trips a success. The book covers all the basics, but also touches upon going light, and proper nutrition which most guide books don't touch upon. Alot of the treks in this book has cross-country variations as well as side trips that will make your trips more interesting than the average trail type trek. The photos in this book are outstanding, and the easy nature that Paul writes makes the book very enjoyable to read. I will be using this book on many backpacking, oooppsss I mean trekking journeys this summer and many more to come. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a complete planning guide
Most of the treks are in the High Sierra, a place I am well familiar with. The book is a great list for ideas, saving experienced people the effort of poring over maps to develop tentative plans and make decisions. For novices, the book includes all the standard information and advice:on gear, food, weather, going light, mountain maladies and treatment, lightning and bears.

And the pictures!More than just snapshots of the country one would see, they provide a stimulus and motivation to get out there right now.I have traveled on parts or all of 12 of the 20 treks; now I am anxious to do more of them.

This book goes on my bookshelf, next to Moynier & Fiddler, Secor, and Croft.

Product Description

This book is a comprehensive, practical resource for travelers, trekkers, and climbers who are going to be living at high elevation for any period of time. The author simplifies and organizes the technical information found in scientific texts and combines it with excerpts from actual expedition accounts and narratives to present a complete picture of how altitude affects the body both physically and psychologically. The book also includes complete guidelines for how to prepare for travel at altitude, including how to train and acclimatize, what to bring, how to treat altitude sickness should it occur, and how to "come down" from an experience at high altitude.

3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Science
I bought this book because it was recommended by Tom Steinstra, the Outdoors Editor in the San Francisco Chronicle. I have always hit a wall above 9,000 feet in the Sierras, so I wanted to improve my performance to tackle the higher passes on the PCT or JMT.

This book is very heavy on the science, but thin on the applications. If you want to know exactly why your performance starts to lag at higher elevations, this book is for you. If you want to train for the big hikes, or acclimatize yourself quickly, look somewhere else.

This guide has everything you need to survive the trip.Of course, over time things change.some epiceries, gites and campgrounds will close or change their hours, but that is some of the fun of this trip.the uncertainty of where you are going next.

Over 300 km's, i only found one major error in the guide, and i think that error was due to the cutting of a new logging road which made finding the existing logging road much more difficult.

I guess if there was a problem with the guide is that it didn't explain well how difficult some of the optional excursions were.I forget the name for the non-main trails, but I was scared off due to a lack of a detailed description about potential dangers of various alternatives. ... Read more

Product Description

As a trekking destination the Italian Dolomites has few peers. Juxtaposing dramatic mountain scenery with picture-perfect Tyrolean villages, and flower-filled alpine meadows with poignant WWI battlefields, this small yet exquisite range rarely fails to enchant and beguile those who visit. This guide has been re-researched and updated to include the two most popular long-distance hikes in the Dolomites--the Alta Via 1 (AV1) and the Alta Via 2 (AV2) as well as shorter walks.

The Alta Via 1 is the classic high level traverse of the Venetian Dolomites, from north to south. It's a nine to fouteen day walk which begins at Lago di Braies in Val Pusteria running along a trail which connects a network of high mountain refuges south to Belluno. The Alta Via 2 is the longest alta via of them all, taking ten to sixteen days.

>55 detailed trekking maps--showing route times, places to stay, and points of interest:
>Alta Via 1 (nine-fourteen days)
>Alta Via 2 (ten-sixteen days)
>15 short treks (one-five days)
>Practical information--planning the trip and getting to Italy from other countries in Europe, North America, and Australasia
>Historical and cultural background--with comprehensive sections on the legends and culture of the indigenous Ladin people
>Cortina, Bolzano, and ten other towns and villages--detailed street plans, where to stay, where to eat, what to see, and getting to the start of a trek
>Green hiking, health, and safety--how to stay healthy on a hike and minimize impact on a fragile region
>Italian language section
>Flora and fauna--four-page full-color guide to the flowers of the Dolomites, plus an illustrated bird identification section

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly 'user friendly' and highly portable
A British publisher, Trailblazer specializes in compact travel guides. "Dolomites Trekking: Alta Via 1 & Alta Via 2, Plus Short Treks" is a 174-page compilation of practical information essential for planning successful trips to the Italian Dolomites, including some historical and cultural background, as well as a full color guide to the flora and fauna of the Dolomite region. Of special note are the detailed street plans and recommendations of where to stay, where to eat, what to see when visiting the communities of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Dobbiaco, Belluno, Bressanone, and Feltre. Enhanced with the inclusion of an exceedingly useful Italian language section, "Dolomites Trekking" is thoroughly 'user friendly' and highly portable.

1-0 out of 5 stars a misleading and dangerous guide book

This guide book has major trail inaccuracies. The trail times do not relate to anything, they are not even consistently off. It seems like a poor translation of maybe a German text.
You will spend a night out or worse end up on a trail over your head if you take the advice literally.
Alta Via I is more accurate than II - why, I don't know.
Please be careful using this guide, the Dolomites are serious, beautiful and unforgiving mountains and this book can lead you astray at no fault of your own. ... Read more

Product Description
The Tour of Mont Blanc is one of the best - if not the best - of the world's classic walks. It circumnavigates the Mont Blanc massif in about eleven days. The walk has all the excitement of the high mountains yet none of the worry of altitude sickness. It crosses numerous cols with stunning views of spectacular snow and rock peaks. Accommodation along the route is plentiful. The 'official' Tour du Mont Blanc follows an established route around the main block of mountains containing not only Mont Blanc but its principal allied summits such as Verte, Chardonnet, Gouter, Geant, Jorasses, d'Argentiere, Dolent and numerous others. The author describes the tour both in the traditional 'anti-clockwise' direction and the 'clockwise' direction. There are several alternative routes that subsequently link and these are also described. The routes, along with suggestions for alternative exploration, have been created on what the author thinks gives the very best perspective and appreciation of the whole region and provides the best balance of visual return for the physical effort required. At every opportunity recommendations are made that will bring the walker into closer contact with the area and enhance memories of the visit. This guide is in full colour, and has a good section on points of interest, accommodation details and natural history of the region. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best tmb guide
We hiked the Tour de Mont Blanc (tmb) in August 2003 and used the previous edition of this book. A british couple shared this new edition with us and we could not wait to purchase one ourselves.

This edition is up-to-date and provides excellent information aboutclockwise and the more traditional counterclockwise routes. Each leg is accurately described with a detailed map and elevation chart. Refuges are listed, giving the hiker information about number of available beds and phone numbers to call ahead for reservations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine read and a top pick for anyone plotting their own international journey
The world is a big one and everyone should try to see it, if only once. "Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps: Twelve Countries in Twelve Months" looks into the traveling times of baby zoomers Irene and Rick Butler as they sought o travel around the world for the same cost as they would staying at home. With plenty of wisdom they learned through the world and lots of practical tips, "Trekking the Globe with mostly Gentle Footsteps" is a fine read and a top pick for anyone plotting their own international journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walk-a-bout!
Wow!I am dusting off my backpack as I write!Although not quite a baby-zoomer, I have been re-energized with aspirations of world travel!A longtime dream of Tibet and Nepal seems closer than ever, after reading the masterful, poignant and insightful words of Irene Butler! The Butler's show us that expanding our exposure to different worlds of culture and humanity can truly help us to live, learn, laugh, and love. The book has been a tremendous inspiration, not only to "get off the sofa", but has also helped in my purposeful transition from a modality of often feeling "tourist trapped" to one of "intrepid traveler"!Indeed, the wonderfully descriptive, emotion rich text will propel me to take the road much less traveled in all of our future forays into the world!Kudos to you, Global Trekkers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
I really want to compliment Irene Butler on her well-written book. It made me want read page after page to find out about her and her husband Rick's next adventure, or how the current one played out. I don't think I would have taken some of the chances they did...I mean, I always wanted to hop on a train when it's moving away from the station, but not really, you know?It was astonishing to see that they travelled the world for an entire year for less than $40,000. Score one for Rick and his calculator! Cause for both laughter and serious contemplation are trade-marks of a good travel memoir - and Irene has accomplished this duality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Travel for all ages
When I read Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps, I immediately thought, "This is not just a travel memoir, it's a life manual!" I found the stories told by Irene Butler to be humorous, poignant, hair-raising, inspirational, and enticing. I myself have lived almost 3 years of my life out of a backpack. The backpack has been growing dust for the last ten years, but since I have read Trekking the Globe, my feet have been more than a little itchy to go out and see more of the world. This time with my children! And as this is a new era of awareness, I will also intend to step gently as I explore!

4-0 out of 5 stars Travel memoir by post-retirement travellers
This journey in words will have retirees rushing to stuff backpacks and lace up hiking boots for their first globe-trotting marathon.

Irene and Rick Butler sold their business and set out to prove they could travel the world spending only what they would spend at home. They succeeded and Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps not only shows readers how they achieved it within their self-imposed $100/day, but the exotic destinations they visited.

While Rick took on the role of finance minister and prepared the budget and 12 month itinerary, Irene devised some rules to live-by on the road. The most important of the five was "We are not here to suffer." They harmonized their talents to make the book memorable - Rick is a keen photographer and Irene is an acclaimed travel writer.

Readers will enjoy every page of their year's adventures following the sun - I felt as if I was travelling with them, so compelling are the stories. Starting in Australia, the Butlers then travelled through China, Tibet, Nepal, and India, which for me was the most interesting section of Trekking the Globe. The clear winner for them was their guided trek to the base camp of Mount Everest. Six European countries followed and they returned home via New York. They chose to travel by train as much as they could, not so much for financial reasons, but as the best way to see the countries and mingle with the people. Clean budget hotels and hostels provided beds and local cafes most of their meals, but they rarely felt uncomfortable or unsafe. Irene shares all their experiences - the good, the bad, and the occasional ugly. The reader feels her joys, disappointments, hilarity, and the sadness of many departures.

Irene vividly describes each destination and includes fascinating historical notes, acute observations of the culture, what to eat and drink, the must-sees, what to avoid, and her life-changing moments. She has organized Trekking the Globe so readers can dip in and out, devour it in one go, or consult it for reference. Rick's images augment the text.

Amid the tantalizing descriptions, humorous anecdotes, and sound advice, the Butlers show that even post-retirement travellers can afford their dream destinations without sacrificing too much comfort and their budget. Recommended.

Product Description
The Kackar Mountains are part of the Pontic Alps, a glaciated, granite mountain range which hugs the south coast of the Black Sea, extending from the Caucasus towards Istanbul. The mountain range is lushly wooded on the north, with pines succeeded at lower levels by chestnut, hornbeam and beech trees, with tea plantations and hazlenut groves spilling down towards the waves. The contrasting southern slopes are patched by summer pastures where black bulls graze and lakes, springs and streams are plentiful and clear. This guidebook and map describes 32 trekking routes in Turkey's Kackar mountains, ranging from half-day walks to multi-day treks. You can cross the passes between the granite spires by paved pack-horse routes or walk traditional footpaths between timeless villages and high pastures where hardy locals graze their flocks. The guide also includes comprehensive historical and cultural details of the area and clear colour photographs. The guide includes a 2 sided full colour contour map, 75cm X 48cm. It is an essential guide for a relatively un-chartered trekking destination. ... Read more
