5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect delivery
The delivery was perfect, fast & easy.
The book was brand new also.

Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book even 20-25 years later
Dave Scott's training methods have probably evolved since this book was published.Technology sure has developed also. So, you won't get any advice on how to use your power meter on the bike or your GPS on the run.

Despite that, these methods would work for anyone. You will get faster using Scott's methods.I am not sure the book can give you his mental toughness, but at least you can get an idea of what he is thinking.

Of course, if you could stick to his diet, you would be pretty awesome also. The guy was and is a machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible for athletes
This is sinmple a must read for any one wanting to do a triathlon...no matter what level you are.

It could do with a little up dating as it was written in the 80's but this really shouldnt put you off...buy it, read it, get fit!

4-0 out of 5 stars In Depth material
This book may not suit a beginner or first timer triathlete...but after saying that...there are wonderful bits and pieces that would be helpful. But reading it from beginning to end would be too detailed for those just wanting to get to the finish line (I recommend "triathlon 101").

I picked up so many details about VO2, anaerobic and aerobic conditioning. It is rare to find a book that can explain the process and why we should train with different methods.

The only area lacking is the workout section.I can not figure out how to design my own w.o.The workouts are not geared to sprints, olympic or ironman's...so should we all be doing the 3+ hour workouts regardless of what distance we are trying to accomplish? It is very unclear what is the optimum time and or distance. However, the intesity level for each w.o. is clearly explained.

I would recommend this book and maybe in the future Dave will come out with a new edition that clears up some of the confusion between pages 102-130.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave Scott's Book has it ALL....
When I first decided to start training for the Half-Ironman, I browsed through Amazon and ordered about 10 different books. This is absolutely one of my favorites.

Dave Scott has won 6 Ironman World Championships since winning one of the earliest Ironmans in 1980.Yet surprisingly, he is quite gracious about his wins.

"Triathlon Training" has individual chapters on swimming, cycling, and running techniques uniquely suited for the triathlete. It offers a year-round training program and workout schedules for 3, 4, 5, and 6-day training weeks with the most effective intensity, speed, and duration for each workout.

It covers nutrition and specific tips to get ready mentally for the race, preparing for transitions, and pacing yourself throughout the race.

Frankly, my goal is simply to finish the race.Regardless of my time, Dave Scott's techniques have already helped to prepare me for Hawaii. His attitude and motivation helps prepare you for Life 101 as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book got me smoothly through my first Tri
It's hard to believe how much information you can glean about a sport from a book. But this book took me from a part-time runner to a triathlete (and I placed 4th!). Just reading the first chapter makes you want to go run immediately. The pre-race section is dead-on, I used so many of Eric's tips at my race.
This is an excellent all-around training guide for beginners and amateur athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Years Later Still Using it!
I have been coming back to this book time and time again as I've now trained for three triathlons and my fitness level has evolved. It's amazingly helpful, motivating, and positive. I use the basic training recommendations and count down the weeks to a Triathlon Event rather than I did in my first season off the couch. This is a great book for aspirers to any Sprint Triathlon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swim, Bike, Run!
Excellent motivational book for the non-athlete or the beginner athlete! It is put in a perfect perspective to give someone the courage and know-how to get this done!I loved it and you will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Training Guide for newbies to the sport
I am not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, heck I just had a kiddo a few months ago, but I like to challenge myself (occaisionally). This guide offers excellent structure for beginning triathlon. Information is concise and logical with insightful explanations. I found the zone training extremely helpful because in the past I have overworked my body and caused myself much frustration, not understanding why I hurt and why I would be so tired. This book is useful for not only beginners, but intermediate fitness practitioners. In fact the book designates different training regimens based on your current activity levels: Slice above couch potato, Neophyte, Fitness Enthusiast, and Single Sporter on a Mission. In summary, this book makes triathlon a lot less intimidating due to the fact each aspect of the sport is broken down into easily digestable bites. Also, I knew there was no way I'd be able to train for a triathlon in 6-8 weeks after just having had a baby. So, be realistic. If you are prone to injury, fluffy, or have setbacks following a program consistently, it WILL take you longer than 6 weeks. But if you stick to the guide, you will get it done, and by that, I mean 'finish' a triathlon. A hard core athlete may not find this book helpful; in fact the author recommends The Triathlete's Training Bible for those who have decided to make triathlon their way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivational!
The first chapter alone motivated me to do another triathlon! I enjoyed the simplicity of the exercies and suggestions.Enjoy! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
It's great how the author was able to compete at such a high level with little to no recovery between races, but if you are looking for insight for building your own training plan this book does not help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound advice from a Kona veteran
Practical, thorough and immediately useful information and advice. Pros: race reports, real training examples, annual training summaries, 'everything you need to know' chapters. Cons: wish it had training plan templates for various racing goals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be wary of the reviews
Does it seem odd to you that the "reviews" of this book are written by someone who only reviews books by this author and assigns them all 5 stars?

Desperate times, desperate measures?

5-0 out of 5 stars Think you can't get to Kona? Think again. Read this book.
I guess I'm like a lot of triathletes who want to get to Kona, but it just seems impossible. Or at least it seemed. Britt's a regular guy triathlete just like us: busy job, family, kids, not enough training time. He was like me, probably a solid 60 minutes from a qualifying time. But with the same constraints I have, he made it happen. And he shows how he did it, training log data and all. The book proved to me that Kona's actually possible, even if you're not superhuman. Now I really think I can do it. I think I can do what it takes to get to Kona, soon. If you think Kona seems way out of reach, think again, and read this book. It'll change your mind, training and attitude. It'll make you think you can do it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, helped me qualify for Kona!
'Qualifying for Kona' gave me the extra edge I needed to finally qualify for Kona -- a life-long dream.

Training and racing advice, training plan details, practical racing tips, and more. And I really needed it. Really glad I bought this. Wish it had been available sooner.

Want to get to Kona? Start by getting this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about training several sports
I am planning to do the Swedish Classic - a combination of four events during one year: Skiing, Biking, Swimming and Running. The differences from triathlon is 1) that these are separate events and b) the skiing. So that is why I picked this book up.

What I like about the book is that it combines a deep and broad knowledge of the field endurance sports with specific advice about training for several sports at once. It also has specific advice about things like equipment and so on. It has an optimistic tone which makes me tell myself that I can do it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ironman Bible
I was unbelievably satisfied with this book. It covered everything you could ever want or need to know about the Ironman triathlon and would be helpful for anyone training for the race including novices and advanced athletes. If you are thinking about participating in this crazy race or just want to know more about it, I would definitely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A complete, exclusively for IronMan Guide
This is a great book. Honest, to the point, complete and well written.
In many ways, similar to "Triathlon Training Bible", from the same author. But this one is focused in preparing for the IronMan.
Not a long read, it can make you close to an expert, with little invested time and effort.
If you are only interested in the IronMan, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
A must have if you are thinking about going long.I have looked everywhere and read a lot. This is the bible of triathlon information!

2-0 out of 5 stars same old story

Product Description

From the moment the starting gun is fired on Kona’s sandy beach at the Ironman World Championship, triathletes have 17 hours to cross the finish line. It’s a feat marking the ultimate achievement in the sport. 17 Hours to Glory is one of only a few books to commemorate this dramatic quest. Seventeen compelling stories allow readers to experience the competition first-hand, revealing tremendous athleticism, unbelievable capacity for suffering, and true strength of character.
The personal stories of triathlon's most epic characters come to life in this book, beginning with the famous story of Julie Moss's determination to reach the finish line, paving the way for future champions like Mark Allen and Paula Newby-Fraser, and a new generation of superstars in Greg Welch and Chrissie Wellington. 17 Hours to Glory tells the stories of a sedentary secretary with all of the wrong habits taking up triathlon to lose weight, a nun who races triathlons to bring attention to her causes, and two men with a rivalry so intense that their disabilities fade into the shadows. Injury, tough breaks, and down-to-the-wire finishes highlight years of dedication to reaching a goal.
Some will become champions, some will overcome all odds just to finish, only to come back and do it again. Triathlon’s most dynamic heroes are candidly portrayed in 17 Hours to Glory, a book that puts no limits on the possibilities of the human spirit.

3-0 out of 5 stars 17 hours to glory
I expected this book to be told more from the participant's viewpoint, it really just described each of the "superstar" ironman finishers and the stories leading up to each moment of greatness from the author's perspective.I enjoyed hearing some of the history of the early ironman races, and the author does convey some feeling to the story to keep you reading about each person. In fact there were a few sections of the book that are quite inspirational, and those moments are what kept me reading. Not exactly what I expected, but not a total loss either.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the ideal books for IronMan "mood preparation"
If you are doing and IronMan in the near future, this is one of the best books you could read to "get in the racing mood".
In someways, it is similar to "Becoming an Ironman", the classic everyone should read before their first IronMan race. But the main difference is that this book is not written by the athletes, but by the authors based on interviews with the athletes. Although this is less "first hand" approach, the result is better written text.
If you like IronMan racing, you will love this book. It is exciting, motivating and will bring you to tears in many of its pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a wonderful book.I happen to know one of the writers, Steve Katai. He's not only a great athlete, but also a great person.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Triathlon Training
I really enjoyed it.Very informational and with deep messages for life and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY good beginning Triathlon Book
As of April 2010 and at 40yo, I am training for my first two sprint Triathlons in May and October 2010.Read 3 different books and viewed all the online sites. This is a very good book and should be a must read for anyone just starting out in the sport or Triathlon.I would say it is the best of the 3 that I have read. It is also motivating with the training plan at the last few chapters.

Would also recommend going to [...] - Triathlon section for some great articles.
[...] is a nice site to briefly record your daily training sessions.
[...] has some great short videos about anything and everything.

The only other thing I would recommend to the beginning triathlete is to find a good swim coach and take a few swim lessons. They can really do wonders to everyone's swim technique no mater how experienced you are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing TRI book--beginners to experienced!
I have done numerous Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, and am now training for my first Ironman.I'm doing a lot of research on training and came across this book.It is so helpful! (and I thought I already knew everything there was to know...)

I feel like this book is great for everyone--from first-timers to veterans. It is a very comprehensive resource that covers every aspect of triathlons. It's also fun to read and motivates you along the way.

If you are considering doing any distance of triathlon, you definitely should get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you will need to Train

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I bought this book used and it came with an instructional DVD. If you follow the book and watch the DVD you'll be amazed at how well it works. I would recommend to buy the book with the DVD as it is a great learning tool. I got both for the same price that somepeople were charging for book only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth getting
I purchased this book because I was about to do my first triathlon ever, and I had no idea how to swim properly.I also purchased a total immersion dvd, and although I think you can get by with just the dvd, I recommend getting the book as well. The book offers a lot of insight into why the author wants you to do specific exercises, and it's definitely worth reading.Between the book and dvd, I was able to get through an olympic and half-ironman distance triathlon. The only shortcomings of these products is that they offer almost no instruction on proper breathing and kicking your legs, two things that I ironed out in a swim lesson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I bought this guys other book and DVD and invested a lot of time doing exactly what they said to do.I went from struggling to total comfort in open water swimming. I am not real fast yet but I can swim all day in rough open water.I went ahead and bought this triathlon swimming because the other was pretty basic and I was curious what this one had that the other didn't.If you are gonna swim in tri's then I would say this book is worth the time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Total Immersion swimming
The book overall is well written. The drills are very hard to understand and perform. It seems that to get a better idea of how to perform them you need to buy the DVD.

Not an out of the box self help book. It will require the purchase of the DVD or hire a coach to help with the drills.

I would recommemd purchasing the book but do not pay new price; pick up a used copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Triathlon Coach and Race Director
This book is an essential for any coach wanting to assist individuals with open water swimming.Individuals will benefit greatly from the use of this book but will find greater value when complimented by an experienced coach. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good training log!
Plenty of info on training. Lots of space to record training events. I'd love to see space where one can record blood analysis, weight, max effort data, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars TriLog is not international
Handy book and quite universal in that the pages are undated, but most of the measurements are in US measurements. Quite annoying for the rest of the word - the pace charts would be wonderful if they were in km and not in miles.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an okay start
It doesn't have everything I want in it. The log is really basic. It has three lines, one for running, one for swimming (in yards-I count in meters), and one for biking...for each day. I really would like more space to write, more guiding questions about the day (e.g. Weather, temp., time of day), a space for cross-training (e.g. elliptical, weights), space for calories in and out, weight, and space for split times. If I ran or biked twice in one day, there is only one small space for miles/time. But again, I guess since it's my first tri, it's better than writing on pieces of scratch paper as I was doing before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
I like it better than the online site I was using, because there is more space for notes.Wish there were lines for general notes not pertaining to a specific workout, but there's space to write in the margins.Very easy to use & flexible. No wasted space.Good tips.

4-0 out of 5 stars my favorite log
I'm in my 4th season of triathlon (go SeaTri!) about to do my first marathon. I've tried other logs with more boxes to fill in but they're too customized to someone else, I like that this is a pretty unstructured format. I tried making my own but I made it 8.5x11 and it was too unweildy, so I've come back to this log again and I actually use it.I like the week totals, it's very satisfying to see my marathon training milage ramp up. In the review section I put reminders like gear I need to replace or drinks that did or didn't work for me. I follow their recommendation of drawing a diagonal line across days I didn't work out and it gives a good quick sense of whether or not I'm slacking. My biggest drawback is I have messy handwriting (keyboard junkie ;-) so I have trouble staying between the small lines.I could go digital, but I like that this can kick around in my closet by my gear. ...
