Product Description

Turtles, almost alone among reptiles, have earned both human interest and affection. Our fascination with turtles, though, has not helped them much. Sought after for food, as pets, and for tortoiseshell, their habitats under attack on land and sea, turtle populations are in decline around the world. Understanding turtles is not only interesting, but also important.

Turtles, tortoises, and terrapins have been on earth since the Triassic Period, approximately 200 million years ago. Their exact origins are uncertain, though - it is still unclear from which group of reptiles turtles sprang. Although the earliest fossils are clearly turtles, their anatomy has changed dramatically over time. In addition, turtle species vary greatly in such basic characteristics as anatomy and habitat preferences. Turtles, Tortoises and Terrapins surveys the myriad of turtle anatomy, habitat, and life cycles throughout the ages.

Human activities on the land and at sea pose the greatest threat that turtles have faced in the last 200 million years. The battle to save turtles goes on, and this book provides an important voice in turtle ecology. Turtles, Tortoises and Terrapins is the perfect resource for anyone interested in all facets of these amazing and diverse reptiles.

Contents include:

  • What Turtles Are
  • How Turtles Live
  • Will Turtles Survive?
  • Turtles of the World
  • Turtle Watching
  • How to Help Conserve Turtles

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of Biology and Evolution of Turtles
This book covers a wide range of turtle biology, beginning with paleontology and ending with modern conservation issues. The book has many beautiful pictures illustrative of the points that Orenstein makes. I especially enjoyed Oreinstein's analysis of turtle features, such as the lack of fenestrae, and turtle evolution. The recent discovery of odontochelys probably makes some of the paleontology sections outdated, but the assessment of model turtle features is still very useful.

I should warn that this book reads more like a biology textbook rather than a travelogue about turtles. There are no cute turtle stories. However, this book will allow turtle-lovers to appreciate just how unique turtle biology truly is.

At times, Orenstein writing is a bit awkward, with very long sentences and some double negatives. However, it doesn't distract too much from the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK on Turtles
I have been looking for one book on the turtle that covers it all and this is it.Details history, types, care, and tons of really interesting (to me) information that covers just about everything you would like to know about turtles.Written in a fairly easy to understand style with lots of photos.I've been boring all of my non-turtle friends and family for weeks with all of the things that I have learned from Orenstein's book.A must read and reference guide for the turtleenthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Turtle Lover
It is so hard to find a good book on turtles at a book store, so when I saw this I jumped at the chance to get it for my dad (he loves turtles and knows quite a bit about them). He loved the book and thought the information and photos were top quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Tortoise Owners Like Myself!
I recommend this book to anyone who has a turtle or tortoise - it is a handy dandy reference book with lots of insighful information. I have an African desert tortoise that was given to me. I knew nothing about its care - did not even udnerstand what it would eat - this book was helpful.

Easy to read, easy to undertsand. Filled with lots of good common sense stuff that makes it easier to understand your pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best General Book on the Subject- Must Have
I don't know how I have missed this book, but it is a wonderfully written book on the subject of turtle biology, with outstanding coverage of all groups of turtles, including sea turtles and the pleurodira. The subjects are very well selected to cover the range of turtle biology, and the collection of photographs is outstanding and very well edited for high quality.I'm just grateful that places like Amazon carry this book, because it is likely that you will not find it anywhere else. Most other books on the subject focus on pet care or classification (naming) of turtles, but this book takes a profoundly original view of their biology. The chapter on paleonology is the best general account of the state of this subject anywhere.A terrific value, and you will not be disappointed!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Money
This book had numerous errors in identifying species in pictures and some errors on the care of the more exotic turtles that are listed in this book.It reads like the author(s) didn't have that much experience with many of the turtles in this book especially the more exotic animals and I'm not sure why they would even include them in this book as it is aimed at beginners.

It does properly address basic setups so you have an idea of what you are getting into before you buy a turtle. However if you bought this book after you bought the turtle it doesn't really tell you much more than turtles are aquatic and tortoises live on land as well as basic diet overviews.

Also the species profiles in this book are not worth the paper they are written on, you would be better off finding a care sheet written by a experienced keeper on the internet.

2-0 out of 5 stars even as a novice I find many mistakes
I can't even make it through this book because of all the errors in it--many bad suggestions on habitats and food for example. Also, the focus is way off for the average reader, as mentioned in some other reviews. Not worth my time to finish reading it.There is much better information available online for free from some reputable websites.

1-0 out of 5 stars Turtles & Tortoises for Dummies
I never received this book. Sent an email to seller never received an answer. Bad, bad!!!! Very disappointed. Yes, it is paid for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners book.
Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises.I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't.

The book focuses an insane amount on the large, expensive (often over 1,000US), rare-in-captivity tortises like the Galapagos and aldabra tortise, which are exactly what the novice keeper wont' likely be buying. The common, affordable, and easier to keep turtles and tortises are given short shrift in this book. They may get a line or two, but that's about it.
Furthermore, what information is given seems suspect; reccomended cage sizes tend to be on the small side, temps can be off, as can humidity. It's really not worth having--I threw my copy away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative book
If you have any questions about any type of turtle or tortoise this book will answer them. Very informative. Worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference source for turtle keepers everywhere
I own many turtle books, but this one is truly outstanding and is in my "most used" category..... a cornucopia of practical information that is well-written, well-presented and well-researched. There is stuff here that you'd have to combe through an entire library to find otherwise. I commend this text to all keepers, from beginner to professional. It has been called the "bible of turtle keeping" for good reason - there is no better single volume source of accurate information available. The author is founder of the Tortoise Trust, one of the world's leading turtle conservation and education organizations, and is known for numerous contributions to our knowledge on this topic. Without doubt, this is the most useful, practical turtle book I own, and I urge other keepers not to pass it by! There are some awful books on turtles out there, and they can get your animal's killed... this one is quite the opposite, and it has certainly saved many of my own animals. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and
If you own a turtle or tortoise, buy this book and keep it handy. ThePractical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and FreshwaterTurtles has information for everyone; yes, even for advanced keepers. Thisis not just another reptile book with lots of photos and little substance. It is a pet owner's manual that appeals to a wide audience. Beginners toturtlekeeping will find all they need to know (without being intimidated)about nutrition, housing, medicine and maintenance of all of the common(and some not-so-common) pet species. Highfield presents a great deal ofinformation in a logical, readable manner. The book includes many colorphotographs which are helpful in species identification. The chapters onnutrition and medical care are outstanding. Many of the species presentedin the book have photos to go along with the detailed descriptions of theirhabits, habitats and life-cycles. The Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping andBreeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles is loaded with information thatis pertinent, concise and accurate. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars turtle and tortoise TOME!
as the caretaker of a red-footed tortoise, and being terribly curious about what's going on "under the hood," i found all the answers that i wanted in this amazingly informative book (and then some)!

curious about prescription drugs?diseases?anatomy?surgical techniques?husbandry recommendations?it's ALL there, with wonderfully vivid illustrations.a word to the squeamish, though -- there are many graphic photographs from study cadavers and of case studies that show the effects of major illness, injury, and neglect/abuse.

while the cost is, yes, prohibitively expensive, please don't let that veer you from trying to check this book out for yourself.many public and university libraries participate in inter-library loans, and you may very likely be able to read it that way (that's what i did!).

5-0 out of 5 stars The new gold standard in chelonian veterinary science
Wow! Only rarely does a book come along that will obviously become the gold standard in its field, and this is definitely one of them. At first glance the price is hefty, but once opened it is clear that this text is worth every penny. At almost 600 pages, this is the most comprehensive veterinary text on chelonians published, and is so far ahead of the rest of the field it is impossible to compare it. The book contains lavish quantities of colour photos. This is further supplemented by illustrations and tables to make the vast quantity of information more accessible and user friendly. This is in no way an anecdotal text, but a copiously referenced resource, assembled by well known authors in the forefront of the field of herpetological veterinary medicine. The book itself is a large hardback volume, printed on good quality paper, with a robust binding that promises to withstand many years of use. This text will without doubt soon become the standard in chelonian medicine and surgery. It is an absolute must for any veterinarian working with tortoises or turtles, either in a practice or a zoo situation. It will be equally useful to serious herpetologists, zoo keepers, and those involved in the captive management, breeding, or rehabilitation of chelonians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
This is a great book. Very informative and full of great pictures. This is definitly one of the better turtle books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY USEFUL AND INFORMATIVE LITTLE BOOK!
To start, let me state that this is not the beginning and end of all books addressing turtles and tortoises. This book should be used as a supplemental and a quick reference field guide. If you are into raising these wonderful creatures or having them as pets, or collecting, you need other books. That being said, I admit to being delighted with this particular work, ergo, the five stars. The photographs are wonderful and have been taken in the wild when ever possible.Approximately 190 of the creatures have been identifed in this work and there are approximately 400 color photographs and drawings. The book also list quite a number of very useful wed sites for further information. As a hobby, I photograph these animals in their natural environment and can appreciate what it took to get some of these shots.I find the book useful as a quick reference guide (along with several others I carry in the field). This work covers not only the U.S. but extend throughout the world.I like this as there is not way I will ever be able to travel to all the locations myself where they are found. The text, while limited (an expert on the subject, one who is deep into the study of these animals would certainly want more) is certainly adequate for my needs. This is a nice book to add to your collection and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Turtle Text
This is one of the best "Turtle & Tortoise" books I've ever read. Scientifically sound, but not scientifically dry, it contains species names for every animal shown, and it shows many, many beatiful photos of representatives from all families of chelonians.Distinguishing among the sea turtles, "typical" turtles, side-neckedturtles, tortoises, etc., and clearly (in non-dry terms) explains in a very fascinating way the differences and the nature of these animals.Profusely illustrated, high-quality binding and paper, authoritative, just the very best introductory book I've seen on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Photo Album & Quick Reference
This book is jam packed with photos making it enjoyable to simply thumb through just to continuously look at the many pretty pictures.I reference it often when looking for an easy way to identify a turtle or when I seek quick stats on a specific species.

I would have given it five stars but I dropped a star because I desire more content when I purchase a book.As a supplement reference guide and a photo album this book is SUPERB but if you are seeking hard core information and/or more details on a specific species, I have to recommend supplementing this purchase with either Russ Gurley's "Keeping and Breeding Freshwater Turtles", Peter Pritchard's "encyclopedia of Turtles" or "Turtles of the United States and Canada" providing you have not already found a book dedicated to the species you are wanting to expand your knowledge on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Best Turtle/Tortoise book I have seen yet.Comprehensive and well written.Enjoyable with great photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
This is a good starter book on what turtles and tortoises require. It outlines many of the types of turtles and tortoises, has tons of color pictures, and is chock full of info.

It goes over habitats, feeding, breeding, hibernation, dangers (fire ants, spinach) etc. including practical tips from the authors.

Unfortunately, this book convinced me that it is not very easy to keep turtles and tortoises and this would be a major investment and worry, so I decided not to.

Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and new to me
I just wanted to learn more about turtles and it has lots of info about different types of turtles. It is in a pretty easy format and has lots of photos too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the new turtle owner
When I got my turtle, Tim, I didn't know a thing about turtles - so I got this book as well as did a ton of research online. This book has TONS of good information (and pictures) about how to care for and house turtles. My turtle is several years old now, and is very happy and healthy.I recommend this to anyone who is looking to get a pet turtle. The reality of turtle-keeping is that it is a LOT of work.Turtles are dirty, and even with high powered filters their tanks need constant cleaning.I didn't know what I was getting in to, but it's worth the effort!Turtles are wonderful pets, and this book will give you all the basic information you need to know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with general information
This is a great book to get you started in the hobby. This book is loaded with valuable information in an easy to read format with loads of pictures and examples. The basics are covered as well as a few of the more in depth topics. The chapters on breeding and hybernating are a little confusing and more information and ideas could have been added. The differences in the requirments needed by different species could have been covered also. This is a general care book. Nothing to fancy. If you want specifics buy a book on the species you are interested in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good and some very bad information.
This book is good as a very basic introduction to Box Turtles and Tortoises. The pictures are good and some of the advice on certain species is worth while.

However, there is some very bad information included. As anexample, increasing the humidity for a Star Tortoise. This advice will secure large vet bills for you from the respiratory issues your Star will certainly develop.Another is keepng your tortoise in a glass aquarium or glass sided enclosure.

I doubt the auther has any real-life experience with many of the tortoise species he mentions in this book.If he did, most will be quite ill or no longer with us.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book would be your first book to the world of turtles.
A concise yet comprehensive book on this diverse and fantastic group of animals. The author has succeeded in giving us an overview of almost all species of turtles in very readable text, even for the layman. The bookwrote not only on the bare classification materials but also supplementedwith many interesting facts about turtles.Although photo is not for everyspecies, it does cover many of them and the quality is good. I think thisbook will lead you to discover more about turtles. It's the book you haveto read before reading Dr. Pritchard's classic "Encyclopeida ofTurtles".Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically-Oriented and Comprehensive but Lacking
The author does a wonderful job of examining the lifestyles and mating habits of a broad range of turtles.Chelonians (turtles and tortoises) are thoroughly examined here. In fact, there is so much information packedinto these pages that it can become slightly confusing as the author jumpsfrom one species to another while discussing a single topic.

As aresident of Florida and an avid scuba diver, I was extremely disappointedto discover that there were no photos of the four most common marineturtles found here.I had hoped for, and sorely needed, photos of eachalong with some kind of guide on how to distinguish between them.In thisregard, this book falls woefully short. There are, however, plenty ofphotos of hard-to-find, freshwater turtles from remote places on the globethat practically no one will ever see.At least the book didn't cost much! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something we all can read.
It is so nice to have a practical guide for the pet owner that isn't written like a text book.I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book is descriptive and informative even for the experienced turtle owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for the keeper of a happy & healthy turtle
There should be more spell-it-out for the beginnerbooks like this on the subject.Turtles are very difficult to care for properly and this book is full of truths on the matter.Concise and thorough - a necessity for the rookie or pro turtle keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a useful source of info for tort lovers.
Easy to read and lots of practical information based on author's vast experiences. As a beginner, I truly found it resourceful and useful. If you love to read a how-to book, it is the one you're looking for.But ifyou love fancy photos, 4-color pictures for reference purpose, etc. it'snot what you need. Liz, it'd be very much better and will be perfect if youcould possibly include more 4-color pictures of famous tortoises andturtles.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book!
I think this book is a top notch one and everyone wanting to know more on turtles should read if not buy this book! ... Read more
