Extractions: Explorations in Arthurian Legends A Literature Review Part 1: Chretien de Troyes Previous discussions have focused on writers who have attempted to portray Arthur as historical in nature. We have seen that no matter how hard these writers try, they cannot help but invent conventions because they have so little to go on. Still, their Arthur was a figure of history whose deeds could be rooted in things that actually happened and places that could conceivably be identified. Geoffrey of Monmouth started the fiction ball rolling with his History of the Kings of Briton, which introduced many fanciful notions, including the idea that Britain had never been conquered by the Romans. Wace introduced the idea of courtly love. It was up to his fellow Frenchmen to elaborate on this theme. We start with the towering giant, Chretien de Troyes. We have seen that earlier tales of Arthur drew on Welsh tales and the events of the times of the writers to portray Arthur differently. Geoffrey of Monmouth has given us the begetting and birth of Arthur at Tintagel and Arthur's marriage to Guinevere (though he calls her Ganhumara). Wace has given us the

Extractions: In his native Germany, Hermann Hesse was not considered a writer of protest. He was regarded as part of the mainstream of German literature. However, his political outspokenness- as a pacifist in World War I and an anti-Nazi through the 1930s and World War II- forced him to leave Germany and to become a Swiss citizen. Hermann began composing poetry at the age of five and decided to become a writer at thirteen. At fourteen his parents enrolled him in a theological seminary, expecting him to follow family tradition and become a minister. In rebellion against the rigid school atmosphere, he ran away. His parents then entered him in a conventional school, but he was soon expelled. He was apprenticed to booksell- Throughout these stormy years, Hesse pursued his self-education in German literature and wrote poetry and autobiographical fiction. In 1904 his first novel, Peter Camenzind, was published. It is the story of a young man who breaks away from his middle-class background to live close to nature. When this book met with success, he quit his job to write full-time.

KINGDOM OF THE LEOPARDAN EPIC OF OLD BENIN, which makes up only part of this volume, is an ingenious collection of vastly hilarious epic tales of the legendary West African kingdom of Benin.Chichi Layor recounts with unparalleled sprightly skills and engaging artistry, spicy and often "absurd" tales of a kingdom and monarchy replete with unbridled power, sexual exploits and female dehumanization, all at the level of fantasy and the surreal. Layor's touches of humor, lucid diction, simplicity of narration, and vivid originality make KINGDOM OF THE LEOPARD memorable reading for all ages. It is an exciting new synthesis of the varied epic tales of the Kingdom of Benin in a form fit for serious classroom discourse as well as cheerful recreation for the general reader. It is truly a seminal addition to the corpus of richly endowed but sadly least explored and under-researched area of African Literature.

Extractions: It is now almost exactly a year since I had lunch at the Celtic Club with Joe O'Sullivan and a number of academic colleagues from Murdoch and other Western Australian universities and we decided to go ahead and establish a Centre for Irish Studies. I have to thank Joe for directing me along this path and to acknowledge that timely visits by His Excellency Richard O'Brien and University College Dublin President, Art Cosgrove, did much to enthuse my own Vice Chancellor, Steven Schwartz, to run with the idea. It took a while to provide the Centre with the constitutional basis it needed within Murdoch's structure and to investigate what support we could obtain. However, by the time the Centre was launched on 1 September by President MacAleese, the Irish Heritage Scholarship Foundation had already been established and we were confident of a promising future.
