The United States office of the World Council of Churches was actually born before its parent. The parent body, the WCC, was formally launched in 1948 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Fifteen years earlier, in May 1933, two US churchmen were among 10 persons who gathered in the home of William Temple , the Archbishop of York, to discuss the formation of a worldwide ecumenical organization. The meeting was held at the suggestion of William Adams Brown of New York's Union Seminary and US Presbyterian Samuel McCrea Cavert suggested the evolving body be named "World Council of Churches," and so it became. In Utrecht five years later a provisional committee for the "World Council of Churches in Process of Formation" was held and Henry Smith Leiper was named to carry out the work of the emerging organization in the US the first executive director of the United States office. It was the intention of the founding parents that the World Council of Churches would be born in 1938. By then international tensions were already paralyzing ecumenical impulses and when the second world war erupted in Europe in September 1939, the birth was indefinitely postponed. In the meantime, many documents of the WCC in Process of Formation were safely deposited in the US office in New York until peace was declared in August 1945. By the time the Council was birthed in 1948, its US office was already a decade old.

We note that the phenomena determining climate are very complex and that scientific opinion varies with respect to the reliability of models projecting temperature increases. The weight of evidence, however, justifies a serious response to the threat of global warming. Ozone depletion and global warming have risen rapidly to head the list of concerns about the future of creation. They are significantly different from other problems in several respects. They have to do with global problems that lie ahead and cannot now be measured. No place on earth will be unaffected, however. Without united action worldwide, no nation can do much about global warming and ozone depletion. They represent the unintended consequences of proud industrial achievements. The gases released were not toxic. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have had all sorts of beneficial uses, and we breathe air with CO in it. Now in the upper atmosphere these gases are doing enormous damage. But we cannot get them down again. We can only stop sending them up and thereby limit the damage.

Extractions: In the period from 1636 to 1671, the Plymouth colonists formulated a series of laws which they later compiled into a declaration called "The General Fundamentals." This declaration has often been viewed by historians as one of the earliest forms of a demand for representative government and individual rights in the American colonies. This hypertext version of the General Fundamentals is based on the version printed in The Book of the General Laws of the Inhabitants of the Jurisdiction of New-Plimouth, Collected Out of the Records of the General Court, and Lately Revised , which was published in 1685 in Boston by Samuel Green, Printer. The General Fundamentals were listed with the dates of "Anno. 1636 and Revised 1671" in successive editions of the Book of General Laws . By comparing the first few paragraphs of the Fundamentals with the 1636 Codification of Plymouth Colony Laws, one can see early enactments that contributed to this list of "inviolable" individual rights. In contrast, a sentence in paragraph 8 of the text below mentions that the Colony had been in existence for over sixty years. This sentence was revised with each new printing of the Fundamentals, and cannot be used as a measure of the year in which all provisions of the Fundamentals were first authored. The 1672 edition of the Book of the General Laws , for example, printed this particular sentence to state that by that time the Colony had "now had near about fifty Years Experience."

How realistic this affirmation is, has been shown by the vicissitudes of the Christian community down through the centuries. In virtue of the faith that unites us, all of us Christians are bound, each according to his own vocation, to re-establish full communion, the valuable "treasure" left us by Christ. With a pure and sincere heart, we should work tirelessly to accomplish this evangelical mandate. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity brings us back to this basic task and offers us the chance to gather for prayer in our own Churches and ecclesial communities, and in joint gatherings with Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants, so that with one voice and heart we may pray for the precious gift of full unity. BAGHDAD, Iraq, Jan. 2, 2003We are a delegation of 13 religious leaders and experts visiting Iraq under the auspices of the National Council of Churches (U.S.A.) Ours is a religious and not a political delegation. We came to see the faces of the Iraqi people so that the American people can see the faces of children laughing and singing and also hurting and suffering. We brought with us dozens of pictures drawn by American children. We shared these pictures with Iraqi children who, in turn, gave us messages to take back to children in the United States. We are called by God to be peacemakers. War is not inevitable and can be averted, even at this moment. President Bush reiterated, on New Years Eve, his desire to reach a peaceful conclusion to this crisis and we are grateful for his words.
