    Extractions: English 220-22 is a three-course sequence required of all English majors. The sequence is meant to introduce new and prospective majors to the full range of literature in English, and the various methods and modes of literary history, criticism and theory required to understand it. The first term will cover English literature from the earliest example ("Caedmon's Hymn") to Shakespeare. The second term will cover English literature from the late renaissance of the early seventeenth century to the Augustan period of the late-18th century. The third quarter will begin with Blake and the Romantics and end with postmodern fiction and poetry. This course considers aspects of U.S. history, politics, economics, literature, and popular culture from the post-World War II era to the present, with particular emphasis on the period from 1968 forward. In addition, the course will help students develop independent thinking, and spoken and written English abilities. America at Century’s End is an introduction to interdisciplinary learning and comparative thinking. In an effort to better understand U.S. society and culture, students will consider a variety of texts such as historical documents, poetry, television shows, music, film clips, short stories, essays, and autobiographies. In addition, students will look beyond the borders of the United States to critically examine aspects of the U.S. global presence. The course will conclude with a discussion of the "Americanization" of Hong Kong, and the influences of Asia on the U.S. during the late 20th Century. America at Century’s End builds on many of the themes discussed in the American Studies course Reading the American Dream Course Work Course work will include two short essays, tutorial attendance, and participation in small group discussions throughout the term. Exam preparation will be facilitated throughout the term via study questions and a detailed revision session at the end of the teaching period.

    Extractions: The core premise of American studies is quite simple: no discipline or perspective can satisfactorily encompass the diversity and variation that have marked American society and culture from the very beginning. Therefore, the American studies major is constructed as an interdisciplinary program that invites students to combine courses from a variety of academic fields in order to create their own, unique study of America. Some may favor sociological, historical or political interpretations; others may be drawn to literary or visual modes of interpretation. However individual majors fashion their courses of study, each major will have an opportunity to engage a range of topics and faculty members from across the curriculum in a discussion of what is entailed in the study of American society and culture. The Major The requirements for the American studies major are divided into three areas: American identities, culture and representation, and politics and beliefs. In addition to the Introduction to American Studies and the capstone seminar, majors take three American studies seminars, one from each of the three areas, and four other courses, which must be from at least two of the three areas and from two different departments. All American studies seminars and qualifying courses from other departments have been coded into these loosely defined areas.
