CSAS strives to accomplish its principal objective through the organization and hosting of a variety of scholarly events, including lectures, colloquia, seminars, and research conferences, the bringing to campus of a variety of research specialists, the initiation and administration of research projects, and the publication of research books and monographs on various aspects of South Asia studies. The Center is one of fifteen Organized Research Units that are part of International and Area Studies (IAS), which in turn is mandated to link and expand the international units on campus and to enlarge the university's international contributions and visibility. IAS is headed by Dean David K. Leonard, Professor of Political Science. CSAS STAFF: Thomas Metcalf , a noted British Empire and Modern South Asian scholar of the History Department, is Chairman of the Center for South Asia Studies. Professor Metcalf is also the holder of the Sarah Kailath Chair in India Studies. Professor Metcalf's current project is looking at India as the "center" of the British Empire in the 19th Century, from which ideas, personnel, and institutions flowed out to the entire Indian Ocean region. The working title of this project is De-centering Empire. Professor Metcalf is one of Berkeley's two Trustees of the American Institute of Indian Studies.

BOYER LEWIS (DIRECTOR) The concentration in American studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture. The concentration provides an excellent background for graduate work, foreign service, law, or secondary school teaching. Students concentrating in American studies will take the two interdisciplinary courses ( AMST 210 AMST 215 ). In addition, students will take three courses focusing on American institutions in political science, economics, and/or sociology/anthropology and two courses from two of the following groupings: ENGL 145 PHIL 211 RELG 115 , and PSYC 230 Finally, students are encouraged to complete an American studies SIP.
