Quayle The Authors all serve on the scientific staff of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), in Asheville, North Carolina. Thomas Karl , who has also been active in defining an international Global Climate Observing System, serves as the Center's Senior Scientist. Robert Quayle is Chief of the NCDC Global Climate Laboratory and David Easterling and Richard Knight are staff meteorologists. The NCDC is the nation's repository for all current and past meteorological records. H as the climate of the United States changed significantly during the century that is about to end? In what ways and by how much? Have national trends emerged that agreeor perhaps disagreewith what is expected from projections of global greenhouse warming? In this review assessment we focus on the climate history of the conterminous U.S. (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) for the century that is about to end. We first examine the observations that conventionally describe weather and climate and next, the now pressing question of whether observed changes in this country are consistent with predictions of anticipated, global greenhouse warming. In doing so, we need always remember that while we are among the largest countries in terms of land area, the U.S. covers but about 2% of the surface of the Earth; what happens meteorologically within its borders is but a sampling of that amount drawn from an interrelated, global system. While we have a U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), its mission is necessarily global because climate itself is a global phenomenon: the atmosphere respects no national boundaries. At the same time, it is local weather conditions that most affect us, individually or collectively. Any response to the question of impending climate change must first be weighed in light of regional and national impacts, in this country or any other.

Inquiries regarding possible presentations should be directed to Jon Stokes or Professor Brian Balogh Previous Guests This year, the Miller Center's American Political Development Program will be combining the Twentieth Century U.S. History Workshop (that was held Friday afternoons on grounds last year) and the APD colloquia series into a regularly scheduled "Colloquia Series on Politics and History." This series will continue to be interdisciplinary and attract a broad range of speakers on topics from cultural history to political science. We will invite a range of speakers, from graduate students on grounds to senior scholars from across the country and post the papers of the speakers in advance. Speakers will make presentations followed by significant time for discussion. The colloquia will generally be held on Thursdays beginning at Noon in the Associates Room at the Miller Center of Public Affairs . Lunch will be served followed by the speaker presentations. Extractions: Program The Program in American Studies focuses on the various cultures of the United States from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Required courses in literature, history, social science, and art history give students the foundation to specialize in one period or interdisciplinary area as they design an individual program of study in consultation with their adviser. The program concludes with a substantial paper that brings synthesized perspectives from two (or more) disciplines to bear on a limited topic within the student's area of concentration. All students in the program should consult the program adviser regularly. The requirements here are special to the program and should be read in conjunction with the general requirements for the Liberal Studies M.A. degree. Thirty-six points of courses dealing with the United States are required. Of these, 6 points may be allowed in transfer credit from another university if the faculty committee on admissions approves. Thirty points must be completed in Columbia courses. The program includes:
