Fact Check: Legal Status of Florida Parental Choice Educational Program In an op-ed piece published in the DESERET NEWS on 21 October 2001, the Jordan School District Board of Education stated that the "voucher program in Florida has been repealed and declared unconstitutional under the Florida State Constitution." The Board should have checked the facts before making that statement. In fact, Florida has one of the most widely-accepted and successful school choice programs in the country, consisting of three components: 1. The A+ Accountability and Opportunity Scholarships allow Florida parents whose children attend failing schools to redirect any education dollars the state allocates to their children to a public, private, or religious school of their choice. 2. The McKay Scholarship Program for Children with Special Needs provides publicly-funded vouchers that allow public school children with physical or learning disabilities to attend a non-public school to obtain the special educational services they need. Over 3,700 students and 342 private schools are now participating in this program, up from 1,000 students and 68 schools last year. 3. A growing number of privately-funded voucher programs, including FloridaChild, provide low-income families with grants they can spend at any public, private, or religious school. And with a bold new tax credit program having just passed the Florida legislature, many more programs are expected to be formed in the next two years.
