Product Description

Uganda, a landlocked nation in East Africa, was known during colonial times as the “Pearl of Africa,” largely because of its pleasant climate and rich land. For most of the postindependence period, however, Uganda was one of the most brutal and violent nations in Africa. In 1986, a new government seized power, promising to restore internal stability and economic prosperity. Since then, Uganda has gradually become a model for other African states struggling to improve the lives of their citizens. In this broad survey, Thomas P. Ofcansky examines the political, economic, and social themes that have shaped Ugandan history. He inspects the impact of British colonial rule, investigates the emergence of the independence movement after World War II, and analyzes the factors that contributed to the collapse and decay of Ugandan society after Idi Amin’s seizure of power in 1971. The author then explores the successes, failures, and prospects of Uganda’s current government. In his conclusion, Ofcansky considers the difficulties facing a nation divided by ethnic, religious, and regional cleavages and argues that Ugandan leaders must work to establish a society in which all Ugandans benefit or face the possibility of a return to anarchy.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very dry reading
This book is very dry in its presentation of Ugandan history. Furthermore, I feel that this author skips over important details of Ugandan history such as the historical divide between north and south, which is a continual factor in the 21 year war with the LRA.

If possible find another author for a historical review of Ugandan history.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview
This book is informative and a good reference, especially the economic and trade section. However, if you are looking for a well written masterpiece on Ugandan culture, this is probably not the book for you. ... Read more

Product Description
The role of Christian missionaries as agents of colonialism has been the subject of much study in the history of modern Africa. The author, currently teaching at the School of Education, Makerere University, portrays missionaries as persons who contributed to the destruction of indigenous African values, using education and Christianity as their main tools. He states that missionaries trained chiefs, teachers, clerics and other persons who they used to sow the seeds and nurture the seedlings of political, economic and cultural imperialism in Uganda and other African countries. The book brings together the fruits of the author's research and his practical experience. ... Read more

Product Description

This book presents a comprehensive history of Africa’s best-known AIDS “success story,” from the start of the epidemic in the early 1980s up until 2005. It focuses on the various ways in which evidence and ideology have contributed to AIDS policy in Uganda, and it places the development of the country’s innovative prevention and treatment strategies into the context of international, national, and local processes. Through this, John Kinsman shows how the country became an important influence in defining global AIDS control strategies.

Product Description
Contributes to an emerging field of African social history in distinctive and innovative ways. Willis's central theme is power - from customary beliefs in alcohol as a symbol of authority and a means of enhancement and privilege, to the use of power in advertising and discourse on the consumption of modern bottled beers and spirits. It is Willis's contention that attitudes towards alcohol have become more similar across the region over time. Willis achieves a full chronological span of nearly two centuries. He lays considerable emphasis upon the late-colonial and post-colonial years; thus bringing out the continuities of these years which historians of eastern Africa have tended to overlook. Oral material from three case study areas in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are integrally woven in with archival and newspaper sources, each reinforcing and elaborating the other.Published in association with The British Institute in Eastern Africa North America: Ohio U Press; Uganda: Fountain Publishers; Kenya: EAEP ...
