4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better acounts of higher education history - more personal and student life focused.
Rudolph has crafted a fairly exceptional account of a history of student life in "American College and University: A History." Overall, this text focuses on the cultural changes that occur in society that impact the college student and the college life.

I also recommend the following texts to be consulted while reading this book:

"A History of American Higher Education" by John Thelin
"American Higher Education" by Christopher Lucas
"Campus Life: Undergraduate Cultures from the End of the Eighteenth Century to the Present" by Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz

Finally, if you are interested in the history of co-operative living I highly recommend the following historical account about the University of Kansas: "Making Do and Getting Through" by Fred McElhenie (it is locally published for the University of Kansas by Oread Books).

4-0 out of 5 stars There *is* life outside the classroom...
Rudolph examines the contextual forces that have shaped higher education, ranging from Presidential elections to greek lettter societies.Very little attention is paid to internal factors driving the college curriculum, but these forces are examined in detail elsewhere (e.g., Lawrence Veysey).

An excellent overview of the college as part of society, but should be read in tandem with other more "internal" works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for everyone interested in US Alma Maters!!
Just read this book if you are really interested where it started and how it started! I am very happy and honored to have this book as my desk book! It has all the info about the emergence of American colleges and universities! Some dramatic events occured therein! Thanks to the author of the book! he deserves special recognition!

5-0 out of 5 stars A witty and graceful narrative
Frederick Rudolph is a master of graceful historical narrative, and this classic account of the development of American higher education should be on the shelf of everyone who teaches in a college or university. From heart-breaking stories of college buildings that burned down before they were completed, to the history of liberal education, to arguments over importance of the extracurriculum, to anecdotes of nineteenth-century professors imported from Germany who found themselves chasing after students with stolen turkeys ("Ach, all dis for two tousand dollars!"), Rudolph will delight you and educate you all at the same time. This is a volume not to be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth study of the history of American higher educatio
Rudolph's study of the history of American higher education is considered a premier work in this body of knowledge. It traces the development of the American college and university from the pre-revolution seminary through today's large, multi-line land grant and private instituions and provides insight into the people and events which shaped these institutions and our country.A must for any historian or education scholar. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good but hurt by errors
This is a very helpful book. It helps you gain a feel for each school and is more detailed than other books. It is hurt, however, by its many inaccuracies. For instance, students will be pleasantly surprised to learn that Harvard accepts about 40% of applicants (it doesn't really). They need better proof readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Matching the College For You
This book provides some insight into the college life that only those who are enrolled can give.It is good to find out details on the school to avoid enrolling in a school and then finding things out when you get there that you don't like. This needs to be read in conjunction with Fisk's Guide to Colleges before you spend money and time on visiting schools. It can help you find the college that matches you and what you are seeking both academically and socially.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing data on test scores and campus crime
The book's jacket announces somewhat presumptuously: "students on campus tell you what you really want to know."

My kids are interested in pre-med and business. My neighbor's kid is interested in pre-law.Clearly the Yale Daily News Staff assumes we don't want to know about the average scores undergraduates make on the standardized tests they take in college.

Yet, a high school kid thinking ahead to professional schooling might well want to know how students do on the MCAT, GMAT or LSAT tests at different colleges.Just like the undergrad schools that use SAT scores as one factor in their admissions process, high school students could use this later college test information as one factor in their choice of schools.

But high school students are out of luck. These data aren't included in the Common Data Set, and the Yale Daily News Staff doesn't ask for them.

The Yale Daily News Staff also assumes that we don't want any hard data about campus crime. They ignore completely the information that colleges must make publicly available under the Clery Act.

Instead we get chirpy PR snippets such as that reported for the University of Pennsylvania: "Some students are concerned for their safety in the local community, but most people agree that safety in the area has 'really improved recently'." They deftly duck the issue of just how bad safety was before and what today's crime numbers are.

It's just another don't-rock-the-boat and somewhat lazy effort by a college guidebook publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for first-timers
This book provides a good basic set of data and student comments on most of the colleges we're considering.A good companion is "Students' Guide to Colleges," which covers only the top 100 colleges, but is brutally honest. This Insider's Guide tends to present a pretty positive view of each college, although it provides a little more insight than just looking at the college's own website or viewbook. The Insider's Guide has colleges grouped by state.I think Insider's Guide gives us useful information about each college: the physical campus, the dorms and food, the use of drugs and alcohol, the types of activities students typically enjoy (sports, arts, whatever).

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 2006
I think it's disgusting the lack of research Yale Daily News put into this 2007 guide. There are a hundred things wrong with this guide, but just from opening to the school I go to (University of Delaware), and seeing that one of the things I have to do before I graduate is "go to the Stone Balloon," I could tell this book was just a new cover to the 2006 with updated admissions statistics. The Stone Balloon, a historic University of Delaware Bar and Music Hall, announced more than a year ago that it was going to be knocked down and replaced by condiminiums on Main Street. This was true, and it was closed for the spring, and camera crews were there at the beginning of the summer to see huge bulldozers knock it over.Pretty sad that NO ONE will be able to fulfill the Insider's Guide's instructions.Sweet life Yale...do some research and stop making money reprinting the same "best-selling" book each year ... Book Description

Forty years ago, North Carolina's Elon College was struggling to attract students and remain solvent. Today Elon enrolls students from 46 states and 40 foreign countries. Since 1988, it has erected a new library, student center, football stadium, fitness center, and science facilities on its 500-acre campus. The number of applications has risen 40 percent since 1995, and SAT scores of incoming students have improved by 98 points. Elon has emerged as one of America's most desirable colleges.

How did this transformation happen? What can other colleges and universities learn from Elon's remarkable turnaround? Taking a new approach to the study of higher education, George Keller examines the decisions made by Elon's administration, trustees, and faculty to transform a school with a limited endowment into a top regional university. Using Elon as a case study, Keller sheds light on high-stakes competition among America's colleges and universities -- where losers face contraction or closure and winners gain money, talented students, and top faculty.

4-0 out of 5 stars My son goes to Elon!
For a parent -- whose son goes to Elon University (Class of '08) -- this is a fascinating read. It should be very interesting (required reading?) for any private college administrator, potential student/parent, or major donor (it desperately needs to build endowment). Last year there were 9,000 applicants for a Freshman class of 1,200. Elon is indeed a former "hidden gem" college that has definitely ARRIVED! ... Read more

Book Description
This two-volume work is intended to help readers develop powerful new ways of thinking about organizational principles, and apply them to policy-making and management in colleges and universities.

The book is written with two audiences in mind: administrative and faculty leaders in institutions of higher learning, and students (both doctoral and Master's degree) studying to become upper-level administrators, leaders, and policy makers in higher education.

It systematically presents a range of theories that can be applied to many of the difficult management situations that college and university leaders encounter. It provides them with the theoretical background to evaluate knowledgeably the many new ideas that emerge in the current literature, and in workshops and conferences. The purpose is to help leaders develop their own effective management style and approaches, and feel confident that their actions are informed by appropriate theory and knowledge of the latest research in the field.

Without theory, organizational leaders are forced to treat each problem that they encounter as uniqueas if it were a first-time occurrence. While leaders may have some experience with a particular issue, their solutions are usually not informed by the accumulated wisdom of others who have already encountered and resolved similar situations.

The authors approach the theory of the organization and administration of colleges and universities from three quite different perspectives, or paradigms, each relying on different assumptions about the reality of organizational life in colleges and universities.

The positivist paradigmprimarily an omnibus systems theoryintegrates the chapters into a comprehensive, yet easily accessible whole. Social constructionism, the second paradigm, is introduced in each chapter to illuminate the difficulty of seeking and finding meaningful consensus on problems and policies, while also addressing important ethical issues that tend to be overlooked in leadership thought and action. The third paradigm, postmodernism, draws attention to difficulties of logic and communication under the constraints of strictly linear thinking that authorities at all levels attempt to impose on organizations.

This multiple paradigm approach enables readers to become more cognizant of their own assumptions, how they may differ from those of others in their organization, and how those differences may both create difficulties in resolving problems and expand the range of alternatives considered in organizational decision making.

The book offers readers the tools to balance the real-world needs to succeed in todays challenging and competitive environment with the social and ethical aspirations of all its stakeholders and society at large. The authors aim is to elucidate how administration can be made more efficient and effective through rational decision-making while also respecting humanistic values. This approach highlights a range of phenomena that require attention if the institution is ultimately to be considered successful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful resource for those looking at top colleges
Our daughter is in high school, and we've been researching possible college choices for a couple of years now. This is the first time I have read Fiske's guide, and I was very happy with it.The other guide we have relied on heavily is The Best 366 Colleges, 2008 Edition (College Admissions Guides). Taken together, I feel these two books give you the best understanding you're going to get from just reading college guides. At the end of the day, you're still going to need to visit the campuses and talk to people familiar with the schools you're interested in.

But what schools are you, or should you be, interested in?Which schools are a potential "fit" for your future college student? The guides are a great way to narrow your choices from 2200 to a manageable handful. While some reviewers here complain about Fiske's "subjectivity", I found very valuable the subjective judgment of this seasoned observer.Sometimes the Princeton Review guide is too numbers heavy, and many of the comments from students just seem way too anecdotal. With Fiske, I get the feeling that the student comments fit better with the overall impression that the Fiske staff gets from the school.

Where Princeton uses numerical rankings in many categories (academics, quality of life, etc..) I think Fiske's 5-star ratings are more meaningful. It seems to me that it's unrealistic to differentiate between schools on a scale of 1-100.Is a school rated 95 on academics really "better" than the school with a 93?Better for your child?I think it's easier to understand if you're talking about a 4-star school versus a 5-star school.4-star is well above average, 5-star is elite.

Fiske does include all the essential numbers (SAT & ACT ranges for the middle 50%, enrollment, admissions percentages, etc...).But the narratives in Fiske are more thorough than those in the Princeton Review. There tends to be more detail on the important basics of student life (dorms, cafeterias, classes, professors).Fiske does a very nice job flagging potential problem areas for your child. If a school environment is very liberal (or very conservative), very religious (or anti-faith), hard drinking (or dry), hand-holding (versus sink-or-swim), Fiske identifies that for you so that you can avoid environments that aren't suited to your student.I found especially helpful Fiske's inclusion of a short list of strongest departments or majors at each college. If you're already considering a particular field of study, that is invaluable information.

I highly recommend this guide for families searching for the right place for their future college student among the top schools in the country.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nahh
It does have tons of information, but a newbee to the college search process, may find the book overwhelming and confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow, this book is insightful.
this book gives you pretty good info on most of America's good colleges(some are not on there because they "weren't good enough") the infos are pretty good, since they obtain most of them through interviews with each college's students. One thing i don't get though,on page 537,for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Quality of Life rating was "HHH" instead of stars...wonder if it is a typo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but wish it had more listings
We have two high school seniors who are trying to narrow down their college list. This book had good information for the colleges we were interested in, but many of the schools on my kids' list were not included. It would be great to have more listings - you might want to check the index to see if the colleges you want to know about are in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars plenty of information to begin your college search
Fiske strikes a good balance between factual information and opinion, making it a good choice for first time guide buyers. The format is readable and appealing. We especially like the ratings of each college, re;quality of life, cost, etc. While guides to colleges can't substitute for a campus visit, Fiske, much like a travel brochure, helps to determine which colleges might warrant a closer look. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is my bible for the out-of-class experience.
Kuh, Schuh, Whitt, and Associates have really developed a a fantastic resource manual.I call it a resource manual in the fact that when I need something to back up my views, opinions, reasoning, etc., I can often turnto this book and find the justification that I need. Not only is itthoroughly research-based, but it provides the type of inspiringinformation that many of us in higher education look for from time totime.

It might have a shortcoming in that the group only used fourteeninstitutions in their study, but they openly admit their procedures andappreciate the fact that their scope could be considered somewhat limited. However, their conclusions and recommendations are such that they need notbe institution specific. They challenge colleges and universities to notonly create a mission, but to strive to meet that mission on acontinuum...for it to permeate the scope of the institution from theadmissions process, through campus life, and on into alumniprogramming.

For those truly intrigued with higher education (andespecially its outcomes), this is an easy read. The picture that theypaint for the "involved college" is somewhat utopian, but I arguethat is what makes the book so inspiring. We should all hope to work forand/or attend an institution that can set such high goals not only for itsacademic curriculum, but for the community of learning that itfosters.

Anyone involved with the lives of college students can't affordto miss out on this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear Direction for Home Schooling Parents
Authors Cafi Cohen and Patrick Farenga have addressed the "getting into college" questions raised by parents schooling their older children at home, like, "How do we work up a set of transcripts?" "How do we get them into college without a recognized degree?" and "What choices in education do we have?"

The sub-title of the book might be misleading. Although a portion of the book talks about getting a child into the "best" universities and colleges, this book will be helpful to homeschoolers concerned about getting their children into any (or not necessarily the best) college.

We purchased the book several years ago and have followed its procedure. We had no trouble getting our daughter enrolled in college. The book provides clearcut and specific direction that alleviates the fears many of us home-schooling parents experience as we begin the high school years. It is helpful even if your children are not the frequent "home schooled genius types."

Since working up a transcript is best done on a year by year basis, the best time for parents to read this book is probably just before they homeschool their (first) child in the 9th grade.
The information on transcripts is worth the purchase price of the book itself.

I especially appreciated the authors' description of getting into local colleges through the "side door" approach by home-schooled teens taking a college course or two during the high school years.

Mentioned but not detailed in the book, there are colleges that are especially predisposed to homeschooled students. Many evangelical Christian colleges would be included in that number.

The book will not only create confidence in parents, it will also provide answers to all those nagging questions that friends or family might ask, as demonstrated by the title, "And What About College."

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
With a college-bound son who just turned 15, I find myself returning to this book again and again for advice, solace, detailed information, guidance.Cafi Cohen has been through it all.Her son attended the Air Force Academy and is now a test pilot. Her daughter attended an excellent college.AND she did a non-traditional, loose hs program with her kids.I wrote up a transcript for my son this week, using her book, and was truly heartened to see how beautifully it all came together. This is one of the best homeschool advice books I have ever read.A real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cafi Cohen's "And What About College?"
I want to thank Cafi for the wealth of information contained in 'And What About College?' We used it for all aspects of the process- from early planning when Shauna was 13 to the final stamping of the five college applications... We are happy to report that Shauna is accepted at Brown University under early action, and awaits word from the other four. Cafi's guidance, humor, clarity and ideas were invaluable... and the sample cover letters were a helpful prompt for this homeschool principal! I look forward to her new book and wish her the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars From a grateful Reader
Dear Ms Cohen,

I am emailing to thank you for the wonderful book you wrote, And What About College? With the help of your book and The Dummies Book on Financial Aid, my homeschooled daughter has been accepted into the Honor's Program at a small university in Austin, Texas and has been awarded a full scholarship for four years. We couldn't be happier! And I could never have presented her so fully without your advice, your experience, and the wonderfulmodel letters, transcripts, and resumes presented in your book. I learned so much in the process; hundreds of hours went into all this. And we were successful!

We live in India and are volunteers in a unique school that was developed in Kerala. We are not missionaries, yet without the generous scholarships we would not have been able to afford college. Not only did I need to get her into the college of her choice, but I needed to present her as a student they couldn't live without.

Of course she is a good student, worthy of the awards she has received. However, you gave me the format, the language, and the confidence to present her in the best possible light so that the college could recognize her unique experiences and qualities.

We both have attended orientation, classes have started, and my daughter is happy. SEU and the college experience it is offering her has been a wonderful choice. I thank you for your book; you are one of the people who is responsible for my daughter's success.

With deepest gratitude, Homeschooling Overseas

Book Description
Today more than half a million foreign students study in America's colleges and universities, significantly contributing to the U.S. economy. Despite its current success, international study was initially not an easy feat and the first students had to traverse oceans and continents at a time when transportation could be treacherous. Upon arrival they found few support services and were left to maneuver a foreign education system. International Students in American Colleges and Universities argues that the legacy of those trailblazers and of the thousands who followed is an important piece of American higher education history. This book traces their fascinating story from its roots--highlighting the individuals, students and policymakers who contributed to the rich history of international students in America. ... Product Description
This book provides a discussion forum for the experiences of faculty of color teaching in predominantly white institutions. The knowledge and insights gained from the narratives shared across a variety of colleges and universities provide faculty and administrators in higher education with helpful strategies for recruitment and retention. The experiences documented here extend beyond teaching in general to other areas such as administration, institutional climate, mentoring, recruitment, relationships with colleagues and students, and research. More importantly, the chapters offer a variety of recommendations so that predominantly white colleges and universities can continue to ensure that institutions change in substantive ways.

Regardless of what you may hear. People can count on US News to continue to deliver solid information on higher education and even rank schools based on certain criteria. I reccommend guides like this as a starter if someone has no idea what school is best for them. Or if someone simply wants some information on a school in one handy book. Otherwise, it is going to be difficult to find this kind of information on your own. Solid guide.

I am a parent and I really loved this college guide!I have read several guides and this really did a great job of reviewing the colleges from an African-American perspective. My husband went to a historically black university (HBU) and he felt the comparison of the historically black university (HBU) to the predominately white universities was incredibly accurate.

Product Description
Northeastern University Students Tell It Like It Is

Hey yiz, come to Beantown and have a wicked pissah time! Is this accent music to your ears, or nails on a chalkboard? Well, if you're thinking about Northeastern, you should realize that there is so much more to consider about a school than what they tell you in the brochures or campus tours. The College Prowler guidebook to Northeastern will let you in on all the little things that add up to so much more as you spend your next four years in college!

Academics are an important place to start . . .

Northeastern is now recognized as one of the elite college options in the Boston area; the school is getting the recognition it deserves for doing what very few other institutions do actively finding jobs for students. And two words can accurately sum up the city of Boston: college town! Yes, Beantown is the ultimate place to be if you're a college student. There are countless ways to spend your time.

And there's the history and tradition of Boston . . .

Five Fun Facts about Boston:
1. Boston built the first subway system in the United States in 1897.
2. The Boston Tea Party reenactment takes place in Boston Harbor every December 16th.
3. The first church of Christian Science was founded here by Mary Baker Eddy.
4. There are duckling statuettes in Boston Commons (park) from the book Make Way for Ducklings.
5. The "Cheers" restaurant (from the TV show of the same name) is a real place where you can eat and get a drink.
But is Northeastern the place for you?

Find out what Northeastern students really think about their school...

"Northeastern has the benefit of being an urban university, and thus the local atmosphere is not limited to the campus pub and a greasy pizza pit. We're a stone's throw away from Fenway Park: the Green Monster, proud home of the Boston Red Sox. If you're looking for a good taste of some Boston pride, swing by when the Yankees are coming to town. Not to forget the Celtics or Bruins, who play in the Fleet Center next to the North End (a short T-ride away), which, incidentally, is where Northeastern commencement is also held."

"Oh, the joys of being young and in college. NU is full of attractive people, and most of them are just waiting to hook up. The problem is the communication; students seem to need some sort of dating guide, because both girls and guys don't know how to treat each other properly. For every good relationship, there seems to be about ten bad ones."

Find out if Northeastern truly has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.Visiting campus isn't enough.
Read our Northeastern University guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for 4 years.Discover if Northeastern University is Right For You.

Mostly accurate depiction and descriptions of the college.
How about a photo or 2?

Here's an idea. Why not grant online access to the '08 version as a book purchase bonus. After all, the admissions/research process typically spans more than a single year.

Anyway...we're off to NU. Go Huskies!

American University Students Tell It Like It Is

What do Star Jones and Judge Judy have in common? They both attended American! Impressed already? There's more!

Many AU students agree that there is something for everyone at their school, and they are rarely ever bored. That's quite a claim to make. What does American uniquely provide to warrant a statement like this?

"For some reason, AU has some of the best faculty members in the United States. I've been exceedingly satisfied with 90 percent of the faculty I've had here."

DC is considered one of the best college towns in the country, and there is no shortage of young people out to have a great time (or climb the social ladder in hopes of political success).

"There's an incredible range of bars and clubs, so everyone can find something they like. Some places are all college students, and some have slightly older crowds."

But even AU has its imperfections.

Straight women at AU complain that satisfactory boyfriends are hard to find, as girls vastly outnumber the guys on campus.

"It's not a big rah-rah school spirit place."

Find out if American truly has something for everyone, including something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough. Read our American University insider guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for 4 years. Discover if American is Right For You.

Product Description
Welcome to College Prowler®

During the writing of College Prowler’s guidebooks, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. We think it’s important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any campus—that’s why if any aspect of a particular school is terrible, we (unlike a campus brochure) intend to publish it. While we do keep an eye out for the occasional extremist—the cheerleader or the cynic—we take pride in letting the students tell it like it is. We strive to create a book that’s as representative as possible of each particular campus. Our books cover both the good and the bad, and whether the survey responses point to recurring trends or a variation in opinion, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

College Prowler guidebooks are in the hands of students throughout the entire process of their creation. Because you can’t make student-written guides without the students, we have students at each campus who help write, randomly survey their peers, edit, layout, and perform accuracy checks on every book that we publish. From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion and help to represent contentment, prominence, or satisfaction for each of our 20 specific categories. Just as in grade school, the higher the mark the more content, more prominent, or more satisfied the students are with the particular category.

Once a book is written, additional students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. Our bounce-back team—a group of randomly selected students who have no involvement with the project—are asked to read over the material in order to help ensure that the book accurately expresses every aspect of the university and its students. This same process is applied to the 200-plus schools College Prowler currently covers. Each book is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation to every school that we cover. It’s no easy accomplishment, but it’s the reason that our guides are such a great resource.

When reading our books and looking at our grades, keep in mind that every college is different and that the students who make up each school are not uniform—as a result, it is important to assess schools on a case-by-case basis. Because it’s impossible to summarize an entire school with a single number or description, each book provides a dialogue, not a decision, that’s made up of 20 different topics and hundreds of student quotes. In the end, we hope that this guide will serve as a valuable tool in your college selection process. Enjoy! ... Read more
