Inheritance
Love of maps runs in my family.Maybe there is a map-gene.Or maybe that fact that my dad owned this book is what caused this love of maps to be passed on to me and my sister.

When my dad passed away, this was the one book I wanted as my inheritance.

this book changed my life!
i know, sounds silly, but i picked up an old hardback of armin k. lobeck's masterpiece from a street "vendor" in new york about 15 years ago. paid 25c for it. it has influenced my perception of maps, geology, and the histories of the earth, life, and civilization ever since. it's a simple book, really, but full of concepts and ideas that you just don't get anywhere else here in the 21st century. also, the (hand drawn) illustration is unusually enlightening while exhibiting a charm and elegance that is lost on graphic designers these days.

the only reason anyone would ever go to the trouble of producing a document like this is because they were truly passionate about the ideas they were presenting. it's very sincere, and you'll never look at maps (or the world) the same way again.

Unique
In high school we took a lot of geography, and learned about "tombolos" and "terminal moraines" and such, but damned if the teacher ever gave you an example.

This book has an interesting approach - it shows a map on one side, the text points out interesting or unusually features, and then a second page with diagram and text explains the origin of the feature.

It seems like a simple idea, but it's an approach I've seen in few other places.

Some negatives:
This is a re-print of a fairly old book, so perhaps (according to the new forword) some of the theory is a little old. I feel however, the bulk of the material is still valid, and well worth it. (It's too bad some aspiring professor somewhere does write an up-to-date book using the same approach)

The new forword doesn't add much to the book, and the publisher might better have left it out.

All you have ever wanted to know about georaphy and geology
I haven't read the paperback, but I just came across my copy of the 1956 hard cover and devoured it with renewed interest.Professor Lobeck selects 72 examples of geography and on the facing page illustrates the geological activity that resulted in that geography.New York harbor, Long Island, the Florida peninsula, the Great Lakes, the island arcs of the Pacific and the Caribbean are among the many mapped and explained geologically.A great book for the student of earth science and the traveller interested in maps and why the our earth is so different and interesting. ... Just what I wanted
As a novice at Geographical Information Systems I was looking for a guide that simply explained the technology without being too basic. This book was just what I was looking for.

Tech Students
My husband is taking AutoCAD Drafting and Design at a note worthy technical school and out of all the tech books they have reviewed this one stands out with the most precise and informative information. This is the first year they offered this program.

Best organization of all introductory GIS texts
This book has the best organization of all the GIS texts I've read. Other texts have either too little or too much on some topics (especially GIS project management and GIS analysis). This one has an excellent balance. Alittle more on data sources would have been nice. The British authors use afew terms American students won't recognize, but it reads very well. I'mrecommending it right now over other overviews of GIS.

Good geology
I purchased this book in hopes that it would be more geologically and paleontologically detailed than other books that talked about what happened after humans became extinct.There is no doubt that this book is more detailed geologically.In fact most of the book talks about geological processes.For readers who have little or no background, this is an excellent summary in layman's language of geological processes.However, the "what comes after" part is only a small part of the book and really doesn't have enough detail about what might happen and how the world would look step by step in the 100 million years after humans disappear.

Jan Zalasiewicz has a gift for clear explanations
While there are speculations on just how (and how many) artifacts of our technical civilization will survive through 100 million years, Zalasiewicz's book excels beyond that.

It is one of the clearest introductions to the principles of sedimentary geology this outsider to the field has encountered.The reader will have clear mental animations of turbid mudflows offshore river deltas, sea levels rising and falling relative to nearby land masses (and why), sedimentary beds thrust up via the tectonic "up-escalator", only to be sheared off at the erosional plane near sea-level.We see only the edges of an invisible (and ghostly past) world, and many of the mechanisms are explained herein.

While the title suggests that the book is a successor of sorts to Weisman's "The World Without Us" (that book being a something of meditation on the fragility of human engineering), it is really something else entirely.Highly recommend for budding geologists to provide a paradigmatic framework for the other elements of the discipline.

How humans have changed the Earth
Going much further out than Alan Weisman did in his recently published book The World Without Us, Jalasiewicz postulates just what legacy mankind will leave in the rocks of the earth 100 million years from now. He uses fictional interstellar explorers to show just how our current existence could leave traces in the eons to come, and also easily explains how fossilization, plate tectonics, geology and archeology all come together topreserve and tell our story. The easy to read explanations of the sciences will keep you occupied; the changes and legacy we are currently leaving behind right now will concern you.

Jalasiewicz does make some judgment calls regarding the damage we have been doing to the Earth, from strip mining, urban development and the multitude of trash we generate and simply pile up in landfills. However, coming from a geologist and paleontologists prospective, used to interpreting things from hundreds of million years ago, perhaps he is well suited to turn his vision from our past to our future. At times the writing moves into the scholarly, but the story rises above, making one consider not just the immediate consequences of our actions for the next several generations, but also for geological generations. We are the first species to be able to have an impact on the physical structure of our planet. Hopefully, the judgment made on us in the far future won't be that we only wrecked what we had. ...
