Product Description

The Regulation of International Trade introduces the rules and institutions that govern international trade. Michael J. Trebilcock and Robert Howse examine the theory and functions of international institutions and blocs including GATT, USFTA, NAFTA and the EC and also examine current difficulties in global trade. This book also includes a comparative discussion of internal rules for the application of trade remedies to dumping and subsidies in Canada, the USA and the EC. The authors examine how trading disputes which result from protectionism are settled. Individual chapters focus on exchange rates, trade in agricultural products, trade in services, trade and development and international labor mobility. The Regulation of International Trade also covers some of the emerging issues, including investment measures, intellectual property rights and the environment.

Throughout, the insights of classic and contemporary economics and political economy are related to current issues facing the world trading order. As a comprehensive text, this book will be a valuable guide to those interested in economics, law and international relations.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest...
This is an impressive book, maybe a little too big, but a great guide to any international lawyer, the authors explain everything to the deepest point and using always historical references to explain the evolution of every subject.

I bought this book for a LLM course and it's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best in the Field
This book is the best written text on International Regulation of Trade currently available.

2-0 out of 5 stars A reasonable text
This book is a standard text for International Trade Law Unit at The Australian National University. It is quite adequate for this. However I find its Canadian bias towards America bashing a bit tedious at times and I think that it oversimplifies the economic analysis. ... Read more

Building on his "International Economics, Vol.1", Professor Gandolfo has produced a completely rewritten and restructured book where both orthodox and new approaches to trade theory and policy are exhaustively dealt with. The book treats current research topics (e.g., strategic trade policy, endogenous growth and international trade, North-South trade, economic geography models, globalization and core-periphery pattern) and clarifies their mathematical intricacies. The text speaks directly to the undergraduate in extremely clear verbal and graphic terms. In the appendices, graduate students and researchers will find a self-contained treatment in mathematical terms. ... Read more

Product Description
Would a free trade agreement (FTA) between the nations of the Middle East and the United States be beneficial to both sides? Robert Lawrence provides an analysis that incorporates both economic and political considerations. He documents the scope for enhancing the trade linkages, domestic governance and regional trade of Arab countries. He evaluates the US strategy in negotiating bilateral agreements and reviews in considerable detail, the specific agreements that have been negotiated so far and the challenges still to meet if a single overarching arrangement is to be implemented. Lawrence also compares the US approach with the parallel initiative being undertaken by the European Union. Policy Analyses in International Economics 81 ... Read more

Trade and the Environment is a penetrating analysis of the relation between trade and environmental protection policies in the European Community and the United States. It argues that the international tensions arising from policies designed to protect trade and the environment can be resolved by the free trade provisions of the EC Treaty and the US Constitution, and from the setting of common environmental standards for all parties. It discusses also the contributions of the judiciary and legislature toward the solution of these tensions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wonder if the book author obtained authorization to publish
I wonder if the author obtained all required approvals from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and U.S. Customs Service. We will find out if he did.The unauthorized sensitive and classified federal information is a criminal offense.Regardless the publication of this book will vindicate many Customs employees who were severly punished by Mike lane for doing exactly what he has done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" book for Customs practioners and businessmen!
I served as the Commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service from 1993 until 1997 and was actively involved in efforts to modernize the organization, with the goal of making it the most efficient and effective customsadministration in the world.I regret that this book was not availableduring my tenure as Commissioner. The book is a virtual road map thatoutlines in a clear, concise and organized manner the step-by-step approachthat would, if properly followed, lead any Customs organization to worldclass status. The book is an absolute must read for anyone currently in aleadership position in a Customs administration anywhere in the world.Butit is also very useful for anyone who has an interest in seeing productsand services moved freely and quickly into and out of countries around theworld with a minimum of red tape, but in a manner that is consistent withnational and international law. ... Product Description
The success of the United States' Middle East strategy significantly depends on the future course of US-Egypt economic relations. Deepening bilateral commercial and investment ties can pay both commercial and political dividends as the Obama administration refocuses US strategy in the Middle East. While the United States and Egypt have long been close partners, revitalizing US-Egypt economic relations will spur innovation and productivity gains, open new development opportunities in Egypt through expanded trade and investment, and create important precedents for future regional initiatives. In this study, the authors first assess the two countries' current commercial relationship and then provide concrete suggestions for enhancing and expanding specific areas of the US-Egypt economic relationship, such as market access, services, trade facilitation and development cooperation. Ultimately, the study sets out several promising avenues for strengthening economic ties. ... Read more

Product Description

A viable system of international trade requires the active support of both the United States and the European Community, the world's largest trading partners and, consequently, the primary forces shaping the post-World War II international trading regime. In recent years, however, a series of disagreements have threatened the consensus supporting that regime. Differences have arisen over the relation of trade policy to balance-of-trade deficits, the terms of and actual compliance with the current General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and the proper agenda and procedures to be adopted in future multilateral trade negotiations. These differences, if left unresolved, will further weaken an already strained system.

Issues in US-EC Trade Relations presents the results of a conference organized by the NBER and the Centre for European Policy Studies. In it, North American and European trade specialists offer theoretical, empirical, and historical analyses of some of the major issues on which American and Community officials disagree and also formulate realistic policies for settling present disputes. Contributors consider such topics as the legal aspects of trade between the two regions, agricultural policy, different ways the United States and members of the European Community use embargoes to attempt to induce foreign countries to change particular political actions, the growing trend toward protectionism and responses to this policy, international trade in services, and trade policy in oligopolistic environments. In most cases, each general subject is approached from both an American and a European perspective.

Product Description
When Australia signed a free trade agreement with the United States, Prime Minister John Howard hailed it as an historic achievement that would add "enormous long-term benefits to the Australian economy." Senator Bob Brown called it "a disaster".

No trade agreement has aroused greater controversy in Australia's history. It affects domestic policy in areas such as culture, public health and copyright, while producing only meagre trade gains for Australian exports. It represents a departure from the long-standing bipartisan commitment to free trade between all countries in favor of special deals between "friends."

In this lively and topical book, Ann Capling traces the evolution of Australian trade policy and examines the key issues raised by the agreement. ... Read more

Product Description
Analyzing the differences in the approach to Soviet trade between the US and Germany since 1917, this book provides an historical perpective to the use of Western economic power as an instrument with which to change Soviet policy. It shows how, by quite different policies, the United States and Germany can both ultimately claim success in achieving their primary East-West foreign policy objectives. In the US case, by beating the Soviet system, and in the German case, by gaining Soviet agreement in 1990 to a united Germany within NATO. The book relates economic policy to political strategy. ...
