Product Description

Coastal zones form a huge variety of natural environments, providing rich resources to humans. They are the place where active interaction occurs between land-based activities and ocean environments. They have attracted human population to form mega cities and economic developments on the coasts, which in turn has caused tremendous pressures on the natural environment. The Asia and Pacific region is a center of such dynamics. It is home to the world s largest region of coral reefs and mangroves. It accommodates two-thirds of the world s human population and its economic activities have the highest growth rate in the world. Ongoing degradation of the environment resulting from deforestation, desertification, and over-harvesting is becoming a matter of great concern, as floods and droughts occur as a result of this degradation. The Asia-Pacific also forms part of the Pacific Rim of Fire and is, therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as the world is aware of after the Sumatra earthquake tsunami on 26 December 2004. Threats of global environmental change such as climate change and sea-level rise will superpose on such problems. Therefore, appropriate policies and measures are needed for the coastal management, both for the local and global trends. This book gives an overview of the state-of-the-art understanding on the drivers, state, and responses to the coastal environmental changes in the Asia and Pacific region. It will provide excellent perspectives for what is and will be going on in the region to researchers, students, policy makers, coastal managers and other stakeholders.

Product Description
Immigration and globalization, combined with new civil rights laws and changes in public opinion have resulted in vastly increased workplace diversity in the last half-century. The Psychology and Management of Workplace Diversity represents a timely addition to current offerings on this growing sub-discipline. The chapters, written by prominent scholars chosen for their expertise in specific domains, provide sophisticated and comprehensive views of the challenges and opportunities that diversity poses for organizations, their leaders, and their members.

The book begins by outlining the demographic forces and legal developments that create the environment in which diversity management is needed. It then presents a series of models that describe and explain the processes involved and examines how diversity has, does, and should work with respect to a series of dimensions, including gender, race or ethnicity, age, disability, obesity, sexual orientation, and social class. The volume concludes with an extended view that provides guidance on how organizations can change to become more multiculturally inclusive, describes diversity management around the globe, and suggests some strategies for managing diversity. Each chapter presents additional, sometimes controversial, issues in boxes to provoke thought and discussion. ... Read more

The book is in great shape and it got to me in less than a week! Awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Going Deep
This is an extraordinarily well researched, well-presented, and masterfully edited work on the psychology and management of diversity. The authors have taken the subject well beyond the surface rhetoric and HR parlance of 'valuing diversity'--indeed, they have driven right up to the door of bias and prejudice and sped on through to a deeper level of understanding, by credibly and convincingly making the case for why diversity is good for business. I have used this work in my university classes and recommend it to others. The case references are extremely useful in helping doubters see the 'real time' benefits of enlightened thinking in a complex and conflicted world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Introduction to Workplace Diversity
This is an extraordinary introduction to the dynamics and management of workplace diversity. The text is written from both a managerial and psychological perspective, which will prove useful to the HR practitioner.A number of case studies are interwoven throughout the book to illustrate issues that might arise in the workplace and possible resolutions to them. The book also lays out a fairly detailed and compelling business case for workplace diversity. As the workforce becomes increasingly diverse and intertwining issues increasingly emerge, HR practitioners and business managers will find this an essential introductory text. ... Product Description

An oil tanker breaks up off the coast of Spain, contaminating beaches and killing over one hundred thousand birds. Colorful coral reefs turn a deathly white around the world. Six whales die in the Bahamas from bleeding near their ears after the Navy tests an active sonar system there. After so much bad news, people are thirsting for workable solutions to the oceans crisis.

Heal the Ocean provides a refreshing change in the literature by emphasizing success stories in the struggle to save the seas. The author—a marine ecologist dedicated to protecting and restoring ocean ecosystems—first describes the nature of ocean environments and then discusses current and emerging threats, including pollution, overfishing, poor land use, deep sea mining, and the search for new energy sources. Heal the Ocean then urges that we build upon efforts that have successfully countered such threats, including:

allowing natural processes to restore the San Francisco Bay and Delta
innovative wastewater treatment at Ecoparque, Baja, California
the world’s first scientifically designed marine reserve network in California’s Channel Islands
traditional stewardship of land and sea by native Hawaiians
economic incentives for sustainable fishing in Alaska
new international fishing agreements with teeth
shifting consumer demand to sustainable seafood
building constituencies for ocean conservation and creating a new ocean ethic using sophisticated social marketing and community-building techniques

Upbeat and inspiring, Heal the Ocean will appeal to professional environmental advocates, community leaders, opinion-shapers, and policymakers, as well as any citizen aspiring to protect the ocean.

Rod Fujita is a Senior Scientist with Environmental Defense, in Oakland, California. He has studied the ocean for over twenty years, logging hundreds of hours underwater studying ocean wildlife, as well as playing a key role in setting up marine reserves in the Florida Keys and the Channel Islands, California.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dive into this ocean of knowledge!
In "Heal the Ocean", Rod Fujita details the catastrophic state of our oceans as a result of global warming, overfishing, pollution, deep sea mining, military interests, and poor land use. More importantly, he describes the many ways that we can work together to protect and restore ocean ecosystems. As somebody who loves the ocean but has never before taken a marine biology course, I appreciate Fujita's accessible writing style. Thank you, Rod Fujita, for this educational and inspiring book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Book Rides a Wave of Hope
A must-read for anyone who visits a beach, lives near a coast or loves the ocean (and who doesn't?). A marine ecologist at Environmental Defense, Rod Fujita unravels the mystery of the sea, revealing its web of life and how we humans are woven into it -- and have shaped it, for better and worse. At the heart of this beautifully-written book lies Fujita's belief in the ocean's resiliency and unwavering faith that we can turn the tide against ocean decline. He shapes the complex science of ocean ecosystems into a tale as mesmerizing as the ocean itself.

Championing the Seas
Dr. Rod Fujita does not write with the detached voice of a scientist, although he is one.He writes with the passion of a champion for the cause of sustainable development and he believes it is possible.
Some fisheries such as California's near shore waters collapsed through over fishing. The solution: California's Marine Life Management Act of 1999 that strives to protect whole ecosystems through marine reserves where no fishing is allowed.Fujita calls it "fish in the bank."
"Present economic activities should not compromise our own future need for resources or those of future generations," and according to Fujita, it is a view that is gaining acceptance all over the world. It is a view that makes sense.
Although the author shows numerous scenarios for environmental disasters, he is no prophet of doom. After showing how ecosystems can and do collapse, he shows solutions, and sometimes brilliant solutions that have worked as well as ideass that have not been tried, but should be. Solving problems with scientific knowledge and political know how makes Heal the Ocean: Solutions for Saving Our Seas an important book.
Some of the engineering solutions that Fujita shows are ingenious, yet there is not a single solution that fits all situations. Each problem, each place on earth and in its oceans has unique features that call for creative solutions. Each problem must balance human needs with the conservation of natural resources.
Rod Fujita's enthusiasm for his subject shines through. He provides a toolkit full of savvy solutions, some tried and successful and some waiting to be used to remedy modern day assaults upon the seas and their living ecosystems. His book draws upon a body of recent scientific discoveries and provides a wealth of fascinating details about the connections among rivers, oceans, land forms, mangroves, reefs and the life that is interdependent in ways that are understood, and ways we have yet to discover. This alone would make it an interesting book, but Dr. Fujita goes takes his subject further. He shows us a future full of possibilities for healing the oceans.
Dr. Fujita gleaned his knowledge from close observations under water and his scientific work at Woods Hole, (he received his PhD from Boston University's Marine Program), and his work as a Senior Scientist with Environmental Defense, an environmental activist group. He has served on many state and federal commissions and review panels. He looks at the big picture drawn from his experience of work on many environmental issues such as protecting marine ecosystems, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain and new discoveries in the deep ocean abysses. Here is an authoritative author who opens our eyes to the beauty, intricate ecological relationships, and threats to our ecosystems as he raises our awareness of what is happening to the interconnected waters of this planet and the life in them. The book is interdisciplinary as books of this type must be.
He shows the importance of non-governmental organizations and what they can do to influence how state and federal funds are spent.By using examples, he shows the importance of local solutions."People will protect what they love and can love what they understand...we too are part of the matrix of the coastal zone and the sea."He gives examples of commercial fishermen on the East Coast working hand in hand with the scientific community to find good solutions to conserve natural resources. Peoples such as native Hawaiians, who have lived on the land and gone to sea for generations, are wise in their knowledge of their particular environments. He shows where some government programs designed from afar have produced the opposite results than were intended.
He has documented losses of salmon on the West Coast through the damming of wild rivers. Pacific salmon are anadromous fish that migrate between oceans and freshwater rivers. These losses are disheartening but may be reversible.Scientists are using the concept of pysis, a Greek word that means self-healing. To reverse environmental damages, rivers can be returned to their natural states without levees and dams and with natural features such as wetlands and trees on their banks so that fish and wildlife can return to their intricate patterns of feeding and spawning in habitats that sustain.
Donning mask and flippers, Dr. Fujita has explored pristine reefs up close and observed how their ecosystems work as opposed to coral reefs damaged by global warming, pollution and destructive fishing practices. He advocates marine reserves as a way to study and preserve ocean species before it is too late.
The scope of the book covers various ocean zones from the near shore areas to the practically unknown abysses while revealing surprising new information insights and fresh ideas.Minerals in the deep ocean are there to be exploited by nations that need them; deep ocean mining needs to be regulated to protect deep water ecosystems that scientists are only beginning to study.
In the last chapter, "Creating A New Ocean Ethic," Dr. Fujita states that reasonable accommodations of competing interests-economic development and environmental protection can often be made."True economic development is an increased quality of life, wherein people prosper not only in financial terms, but also in aesthetic and spiritual terms, sustained by natural beauty, wildlife and health ecosystems."
Hercules, hero of ancient Greek mythology, was given twelve seemingly impossible labors to accomplish and found ways to overcome enormous difficulties. There are lessons in this. Today, Dr. Fujita champions the Herculean tasks needed to heal the oceans of the world. With the precision of a careful scientist and the drive of a committed activist he has written a book that should be in every library and bookstore.Heal the Ocean: Solutions for Saving Our Seas makes complicated issues clear to scientists as well as the general public and writes with a fine style.
Review written by Barbara Spring, author of The Dynamic Great Lakes, a non-fiction book about the history of changes in North America's Great Lakes and The Wilderness Within, a book of nature poetry and essays from around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars UPBEAT, REALISTIC AND FULL OF NEW IDEAS
Dr. Fujita's highly readable book is full of positive examples of changes we can make to improve the environment. It is a realistic insight into the science of environmental change. The book takes the time to present the problems facing our oceans but also shares success stories for change. This is a wonderful book for a non-scientist, non activist but interested reader. ... Product Description
This book illuminates what is really happening in the American workplace. The authors explain how the widespread restructuring of American firms--usually resulting in a reduction of the workforce to cut costs--has had a profound impact on the lives of workers.

The book explains how the new relationship requires high skill levels, but does not provide training for them. Workers themselves now must take charge of their personal development instead of relying on their employers. Their alienation from their firms is compounded by the large disparity between the pay of top managers and that of workers--including middle managers and supervisors. The future is uncertain, but the authors argue that the traditional relationship betweem employer and employees will continue to erode. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting but inconclusive
Change at Work is based on a study, commissioned by the National Planning Association's Committee on New American Realities (NAR), to evaluate and comprehend changing employment/organizational practices. The study also looked at the impacts of such changes on the employees of the companies reviewed - particularly the skills and adaptation needed to weather this storm. Change at Work is divided into six chapters, each individually authored by NAR committee members.Consequently, one of the main problems with the book is that it does not flow particularly well. The central theme of Change at Work is that the traditional methods of managing employees and developing skilled workers inside companies are eroding, leaving a new employment relationship in which the attachment between employees and employers has declined.Jobs demand more of their workers but offer them less, and these workers now bear more of the risks of doing business through reduced job security and contingent pay (pay based on performance). In addition, what Peter Cappelli calls the "traditional work arrangements," where companies developed skilled employees and worked to keep them, are quickly disappearing.Pressure on the companies for better performance is being applied from foreign competitors and investors and is causing these companies to explore restructuring to cut out "fat."This "fat" has often been interpreted to mean the companies' employees, who have found themselves to be the unfortunate victims of the now famous concept called "downsizing." The strengths of Change at Work are in the chapters contributed by Cappelli. In addition, the book contains an interesting and thorough variety of data, surveys, and other references, although some may not like their breadth or loose assembly. Unfortunately, Change at Work balances its strengths with several weaknesses. The book claims it is the result of a study, but it is actually more of a history lesson with limited background. It is also not particularly useful as a management tool, and may not even be considered interesting by most managers or employees. The book lacks a solid conclusion to the theme, with the exception that employee/employer relationships will become worse before they improve.Change at Work provides several other useless conclusions as well.Examples include the findings that employees need more skills in the new system (which begs the question-at what point throughout business evolution have employees never needed new skills?); managing these issues will be an enormous challenge; and change at work will continue.Big surprises. The variety of data sources and timeframes simply tossed together leaves the reader hoping that the authors will use them to point to some obvious conclusion or develop their own, but in the last paragraph they resign and state they are divided. The currently strong economy and low unemployment rate, albeit temporary, has given employees an opportunity to strike back in the form of being more selective, demanding better compensation packages, etc.We should not ignore the benefits of corporate restructuring as mentioned in Change at Work.Restructuring has given organizations much more flexibility in accomplishing their goals, has empowered employees, and has given them the autonomy that the traditional model could not.

2-0 out of 5 stars Must read for students and new managers.
Change at Work is a must read for high-school students, college students, and those seeking careers in management.Cappelli has a no nonsense approach with detailing those issues impacting our careers, the work environment, and the future. For those wondering if a technical or college education is worthwhile, Cappelli gives you good reasons for furthering your education.Cappelli and his co-authors do an outstanding job detailing those issues and circumstances faced by today's workers and managers of all business, i.e., corporate America, government agencies and other nonprofit entities, and the smallest of ma-and-pa companies. Cappelli does not offer good solutions for any of the issues he raises in this work.Unfortunately for professionals and management already in the work force, Change at Work offers no new knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time!
"Change at Work"
Cappelli, Peter (1997).Change at Work.Oxford University Press.NY
Change at Work is a commissioned study by the Committee on New American Realities that uses available information in an attempt to understand changing employment practices, changing organizations, and evolving employment relationships. The issues discussed in the book are nationwide workplace trends that have important ramifications for employees, employers, and the U. S. economy.

Change at Work is definitely a scholarly work that must be read in manageable, small portions because of the poor linking of chapters and poor data presentation.Fortunately, the final and concluding chapter of this book makes some sense out of the previous six chapters.

The editor tells us that the book was outlined by the group of authors, then individual authors took responsibility for each chapter. The editor also says "the authors made extensive comments on each others chapters along the way." (14).I have no doubt that the authors made comments on each chapter.I only wish they had taken the time to focus these comments on the transition between and the linking of the chapters and the data presentation.A consistent chapter format that used a conclusion or summary section at the end of each chapter would have facilitated the transition and linking of the chapters. This type of section at the end of each chapter could have solidified the authors' conclusions after the data purge that occurs in each chapter. Each data source pertains to a different time period and means of data collection. Some sources use percentage, while others use raw numbers. The authors do a poor job of linking the data; hence, the net effect is confusion to the reader. The authors would have made the book easier to read by using more graphical representation and detailing the significant data necessary to support their arguments.

The one strength of this book is the editor's ability to bring most of the significant findings throughout the book into a logical concluding chapter that is easy to understand and flows quite well. Each of the previous chapters is referenced directly or implicitly as the editor makes sense out of the book.

The authors are definitely working on a timely topic that most people in industry can relate to.Personally, I started working for my current employer, a global consumer products company, a year or two after they went through a large downsizing period.Since employment, I have seen this trend continue in the supervisory level. This is in alignment with the authors data that shows the percentage of supervisory jobs eliminated doubling in four years. My company is not currently going through a large organized downsizing, but rather a slow downsizing through attrition and hiring fewer people. The flattening of my company, coupled with the implementation of high performance work systems has undoubtedly placed the results of doing business on the employees. The book dedicates an entire chapter to these work organizations and the responsibilities that they bring to the employees.

The book describes the changes and brings supporting data, but the authors do not give any significant conclusions or forecasts and does not present the data in a way that the reader can draw his or her own conclusions. The lack of conclusions or forecasts and the poor linking of the chapters leave the experienced reader, someone who has been through downsizing and is involved in high performance work groups, no better off than he or she was before. ... Product Description
"Comprehensive in its coverage, clearly organized and written, and thoroughly researched, this book fills a significant hole in the historical literature on Texas oil."--Joe Pratt, Cullen Professor of History and Business, University of HoustonAs the twentieth century began, oil in Texas was easy to find, but the quantities were too small to attract industrial capital and production. Then, on January 10, 1901, the Spindletop gusher blew in. Over the next fifty years, oil transformed Texas, creating a booming economy that built cities, attracted out-of-state workers and companies, funded schools and universities, and generated wealth that raised the overall standard of living--even for blue-collar workers. No other twentieth-century development had a more profound effect upon the state. In this book, Roger M. Olien and Diana Davids Olien chronicle the explosive growth of the Texas oil industry from the first commercial production at Corsicana in the 1890s through the vital role of Texas oil in World War II. Using both archival records and oral histories, they follow the wildcatters and the gushers as the oil industry spread into almost every region of the state. The authors trace the development of many branches of the petroleum industry--pipelines, refining, petrochemicals, and natural gas. They also explore how overproduction and volatile prices led to increasing regulation and gave broad regulatory powers to the Texas Railroad Commission. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book traces the first half century of oil in Texas from Spindletop through East Texas and the Permian Basin.
There are three reasons why you should buy Diana and Roger Olien's book `Oil in Texas'. It is nicely-produced, with lots of illustrations. The writing is unobtrusive and authoritative. But best of all, it is a great tale which encapsulates, if not all, at least a fair sized chunk of humanity, big and little oil, some science, government, regulation, and the environment. In fact the first Texan discoveries in Corsicana led to environmental legislation as early as in 1899. These imposed open-hole casing requirements, although the concern was more for the well-being of the reservoir than for aquifer pollution.
The 1901 Spindletop discovery at Beaumont really got things moving - after the lease had changed hands three times, and an `expert' geologist derided the prospect as `idle dreams or insane notions'. Spindletop produced over 17 million barrels of oil in 1902! At the time, non-geological theories of prospectivity abounded. Former Texas governor James Hogg was asked what made up `oil land.' Hogg replied "If it hain't no good for nothing else, it's a good sign; and if the title is bad, it's a cinch."
Texas politics shaped the oil industry from the outset. Ever suspicious of things out-of-state, Texas became the heartland of anti-trust legislation. What in some ways was a propaganda war against the `monopolistic' majors, led to the establishment of a healthy Texan oil industry.
Local industry was also bolstered by the powerful Texas Railroad Commission (TRC), which by the end of the 1940's `exercised far more influence over [worldwide] crude oil prices than OPEC does today'. The TRC's regulations, on matters such as gas venting, and water encroachment, frequently went un-policed. It was left up to individuals and companies to enforce regulation through the courts.
By 1920, geological theories had evolved beyond the salt dome `fixation' to trends, anticlines and stratigraphic traps. Gravity prospecting, refraction and later reflection seismics, introduced by Everett DeGolyer's Geophysical Research Corporation, came in slowly with mixed results. In fact the big one - the East Texas `colossus' of oilfields was found with 1930 with no help at all from science. The East Texas field, with estimated recoverable reserves of 7 billion barrels (of which 2 billion remain today!) is a pure stratigraphic trap with no surface manifestation whatsoever.
Other tricks of the trade were discovered in this early period. Independent Cullen drilled for oil in fields abandoned by the majors, and sometimes located newer reserves in deeper horizons. Some of the discoveries beggar belief. One well in the Permian Basin's Yates field produced at a rate of 200,000 barrels per day. A photo shows the drilling crew looking rather philosophical as they pose, drenched in black gold.
The boom and bust cyclical nature of the industry was established from the earliest days. The National Guard was called in to quell the trouble resulting from the total collapse in the oil price that soaring production from East Texas created. More legislation followed - against `hot oil' from out of state.
Oil in Texas' only failings are the rather skimpy maps and the near-absence of any geological sections de l'époque. Actually there is one - a marvelous section from the Houston Post of 1901 showing an underground river of oil flowing from Corsicana, through Beaumont and out into the Gulf. Makes you wonder - if you project out into the deepwater - maybe it ends up feeding ThunderHorse!

This book uncovers the factors that influence womens interest in and choice of IT as a career field, and how this varies across cultures and regions. The results of the studies are both illuminating and prescriptive for designing and implementing successful programs that cross the secondary, post-secondary, and professional settings, and for establishing an agenda of critical areas for future research about women and information technology. This examination of womens interest in IT in a cross-cultural context contains practical suggestions to promote the recruitment and retention of women in IT, spanning early education to careers, ideal for: college faculty, and advisors who implement activities and programs designed to promote the success of women in science and engineering, and those who fund these programs; academic researchers and K-12 educators; and IT industry professionals committed to a diverse workforce. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Gender Inequality in IT
I have been using this text for a research paper on IT Work Trends, and so far, I have been impressed with the layout and the content of this book.

Overall, what this book serves to do is to:
Introduce the reader to the gender inequalities present in IT
Outline the social factors contributing to this inequality
Outline the trajectory of interest in IT from middle school to high school and even to college
The role of women in IT presently
What we can do to get rid of gender inequality in IT, down to the secondary school level.

The small sample sizes in some of the Chapters (especially Chapter 2) may seem too small, and I must emphasize that it is important to understand why the sample sizes are small before taking some of the statistics to heart (or rejecting them for that matter).

All in all, this resource is to-the-point and easy to use for research. Aside from those who have a specific interest in the subject matter covered in this book, I would also recommend this book for educators who are concerned about some of the overarching effects of gender discrimination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators and any involved in information technology recruits in general
RECONFIGURING THE FIREWALL: RECRUITING WOMEN TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACROSS CULTURES AND CONTINENTS is a pick for college-level collections strong in both information technology and women's studies and careers. Amazon.com Review
What's more important to you--to have your professors knowyour name, or to go to a famous school with nationwide namerecognition? How would you rank the importance of the quality of thelibrary in relation to the record of the football team? Beforedeciding to invest four years and several thousand dollars in acollege, it helps to know what your priorities are. The KaplanGuide to College Selection 1999 is not merely an alphabetical listof colleges--it's really a workbook to help you decide what you'relooking for in a university. The opening section in the book helps youcreate a priority list by posing questions regarding school size, location, cost, reputation, and other issues. Your top 10 prioritiesare then used to steer you in the direction of college categories suchas "academic shrines," "briefcase factories," and "cultural meccas."Each category is described in an overview that discusses potentialpros and cons affecting such schools (for example, the ski slopes neara northern "scenic route" school may sound appealing--but howappealing do six-foot drifts of snow on the way to class sound?)followed by profiles of the individual schools. These profiles containboth concise information about size, setting, and admissionrequirements and a descriptive essay to help you get a better feelingfor the school. The remainder of the book is devoted to helping youget admitted to at least some of the schools you've selected--from howto get organized to ensure you don't miss deadlines (and providingthorough checklists to keep you on track) to how to write successfulessays, get good recommendations, and shine at interviews. Additionalchapters address special considerations for students of color andstudents with disabilities. The final section covers issues relatingto financial aid and offers advice on how to compare offers (and, possibly, negotiate better ones).

Whether you end up looking for a "sports powerhouse" or an"alternative haven," the Kaplan Guide to College Selection 1999gives you the tools you need to make an informed decision--and toincrease your chances of getting accepted at the schools youchoose. --C.B. Delaney ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for selection of colleges.
For the person who have no idea what colleges they go to, and what to look for in colleges. The book guides you through with a self-assessment survey in the beginning that allows you to prioritize between preferences you mayhave for colleges.

The most useful part of the book, however, is thecatagorized colleges.Unlike other books that list colleges by state oralphabetic order, this book lists the "brain" colleges, theliberal arts colleges, the "specialized" colleges. This allowsme to find colleges that are similar to the ones they are interestedin.

Also gives significant insights into the colleges with long andinformative commentaries on each of the profiled colleges.

Also includesa section on the admissions process itself.

The only shortcoming is thefact that not too many colleges are included, but the ones that are areamazingly done.

I spent an entire junior year trying to choose colleges. This book did the job in a few hours. ... Read more

Product Description
A great deal of research has recently been completed on behavior and the organization of work, most of which has viewed it from an ethnocentric perspective. In this work, Erez and Earley show how this is insufficient to develop a global theory of work behavior--it necessitates the inclusion of a cultural perspective. Solidly grounding their work in the fields of psychology, management, and anthropology, the authors propose a new theoretical framework utilizing individual's self-concept as a means of linking cultural beliefs and social interaction to emergent work behavior. The book includes specific recommendations for structuring work environments and managerial processes to match cultural practices and enhance productivity in the workplace, making it an essential reference for scholars, students, and professionals. ...
