2-0 out of 5 stars Read "The ETF Book" by Richard Ferri instead.
The first quarter of the book is ok, explaining the basics as every other etf book would do. But towards the middle and especially towards the end, the book becomes really ineffective and almost becomes pain to go through.

Read The ETF Book: All You Need to Know About Exchange-Traded Funds by Richard Ferri instead. It is far more comprehensive and well-explained. Also check out his other books.

Also read THE CREATURE FROM JEKYLL ISLAND - A Second Look at the Federal Reserve by Edward Griffin to better understand business cycles, monetary system, and economic consequences.

2-0 out of 5 stars This strategy would have lost you a fortune in 2008
Unless I'm missing something (and I doubt I am) the Ultimate ETF Strategy described in this book CLEARLY would have resulted in a miserable failure in 2008.The stock market is currently down roughly 40%, and the REITS index is down over 50% as of this writing. If you had put 25% into a REITs index ETF, 25% into a total bond index find, 25% into either a foreign or domestic stock index ETF, and the other 25% into an investment style ETF (either Large or Small, and either Growth or value) prescribed in this book, you would have lost an incredible amount of your investment in 2008.Likely the only portion that would have been relatively flat would have been the bond ETF, which is 25% of the strategy.I believe you likely also would have lost with this strategy in 2007 too.

NOTE: The Ultimate ETF Strategy has an interest rate indicator which is supposed to be a signal to get out of half the equities which would leave you 25% exposed instead of 50%.I didn't follow this signal, but I DOUBT this signal would have gotten triggered in 2008, since I believe either an inverted curve or higher yields compared to the previous 6 months was the trigger.TNX Yield has generally gone down for 2008 and the curve wasn't inverted. Even if triggered, which I doubt was the case, I believe, the investor would still be 25% invested in equities instead of 50%, and you still would be 25% invested in REITS, so 2008 would still have been a horrible year.

One key problem with this book, as alluded to by another reviewer, is that the research data goes back to the early 1980s, and the past 25 years or so have generally been a bullish period for stocks. The basic idea behind this book is that you stay 50% invested in equities most of the time (except when the interest rate trigger makes you get only 25% invested in equities, with the other 25% in cash).Based on trends, you make sure the two stock ETFS you own (or one ETF when the interest rate trigger had gotten you out of the other ETF) have been outperformers relative to other indices (until the performance trend changes).25% goes into a total bond market index ETF and the other 25% goes into a REITS index ETF.(the latter got CRUSHED in 2008 even more than equities at the time of this writing)

The premise (whether stated or implied) is that, since this strategy had outperformed the market for, *roughly*, the past 25 years (at time the book was written), and had been a profitable strategy for that time period, then it is likely to be an outperforming and profitable strategy in the future. The problem, as I see it, is that the 25 year period beginning at the time this book was published may be very different in terms of performance compared to the prior 25 years!

I followed this strategy in 2007, except that I didn't buy a REITs ETF,because it looked to me like a REITs were in a BUBBLE (good decision on my part!), and I bought a Fidelity Short Term Bond fund instead of a Total Bond Index ETF (not-so-great decision on my part). However, I decided to abandon this strategy altogether in December of 2007 and sold ALL my equities by the 1st week of January.(one of the best financial decisions of my life!)

I had abandoned this strategy when I read about the problems in the financial sector, housing sector, and the credit markets.Thankfully, I saved myself a lot of money by NOT following this strategy!

In 2008, I made money trading in and out of the market (including shorting the market), while the world at large lost 40% or more of their money buying and holding stock indices. My opinion is that buying and holding stock indices for the long term is not going to be the ticket to high returns that it was 25 years ago, even if holding the indices that are relative outperformers (such as holding the S&P if it outperforms EFA, or holding a Small Cap growth if it has outperformed large growth, or large cap value).

Frankly, I do NOT recommend anyone follow this strategy, or any other strategy that would leave you exposed to equities throughout a major bear market (in terms of length or in terms of percentage).

Do yourselves a favor, and find a chart of the Japanese Nikkei 225.In 1990, the Nikkei was around 40,000.Now it's under 9,000 and it is almost 19 years later.Buy and hold would have lost you a fortune!Same thing could be happening in the USA for the next 10 or 20 years.

Don't be fooled into thinking that stocks can't have 20 or even 30 year year periods where the returns are lousy relative to simple money market accounts.I would not bet the farm on ANY strategy that would keep you exposed to equities and REITs all the time. The lack of a satisfactory EXIT strategy for equities or REITS is a major flaw in the Ultimate ETF Strategy described in this book.

Sorry, but I can't recommend this book, unless you are comfortable with the idea of potentially losing a lot of money.Strategies that were successful for the 25 year period before the book was published will not necessarily work well from that point forward.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Wide-Ranging Overview
Marvin Appel does a very thorough job covering ETFs.His book is surprisingly wide-ranging.On the one hand, he explains some very basic concepts, for example explaining a bid-ask spread. On the other, he gets into the sophisticated details of ETF composition. This book is a like a small ETF encyclopedia.Well done!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much fluff, too little on international investing
Like other Appel books, this one is too heavy on fluff and not enough on the real thing: solid strategies. There's also way too little discussion on international ETFs, esp. given how such ETFs account for a large percentage of all ETFs out there in the marketplace.I also have doubts about the buy-and-hold strategy; after all, one can easily have done that with mutual funds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cuts Through Hype & Gives You a Strategy
I read this book over the Christmas holidays and found it very helpful. It is one of the best books on investing that I've read of late. The best part about the book is that it gives you some guidelines on how to develop a diversified portfolio. The author gets a little long-winded in some parts, but he gives you a good idea of what to look at in terms of trends and sectors of the market to get into.I appreciated the list of Web sites he provided.

I found the book very readable, but I would not recommend it to a novice investor.Overall, this is a very good book for an intermediate/advanced investor and it encourages using the Internet to track price movements.Bear in mind that the author assumes that you have the time of day to get on the Internet and track prices in order to observe trends, which may be profitable. This is a book for those who can devote some spare time to investing on their own.If you don't have the time or energy, buy a bank CD and call it a day. ... 44. TrimTabs Investing: Using Liquidity Theory to Beat the Stock Market

Product Description
Whether you are an investment professional managing billions of dollars or an individual investor with a small nest egg, TrimTabs Investing shows you how to beat the major stock market averages with less risk.  This groundbreaking book begins by comparing the stock market to a casino in which the house (public companies and the insiders who run them) buys and sells shares with the players (institutional and individual investors).  TrimTabs Investing argues that stock prices are primarily a function of liquidity—the amount of shares available for purchase and the amount of money available to buy them—rather than fundamental value.  Finally, it outlines the building blocks of liquidity theory and explains how you can use them to predict the direction of the stock market.

“Charles Biderman, a savvy and battle-scarred veteran of the investment wars, has fashioned an intriguing approach to making money in the stock market that adroitly avoids both heavy-breathing speculation and the standard Wall Street practices that enable investors, big and small, to lose money in good markets as well as bad. Aimed at the sophisticated investor (which may or may not be an oxymoron), the book is written in blessedly straightforward prose and is a worthwhile read for anyone with an urge to have a fling at investing.--Alan Abelson
Barron’s

“Since the days of Joseph and Pharaoh, it has been axiomatic that the size of the grain harvest affects the level of grain prices; but today’s investors have been slow to appreciate the fact that the supply of stock shares significantly determines the level of stock prices. Biderman’s long overdue book outlines the theory and evidence behind ‘Trading Float,’ the actual—and exploitable—power behind major moves in the stock market. --Paul Montgomery
CEO and CIO of Montgomery Capital Management

“‘Trade as corporate execs do, not as they say.’ Charles Biderman has built an impressive list of hedge fund clients from this essential insight, and this book does a great job explaining exactly how retail investors can incorporate it into their investing.”--Eric Zitzewitz
Assistant Professor of Economics, Stanford Graduate School of Business

“Charles Biderman is a smart thinker, clear writer—and he offers here some very interesting ideas. This book is for the little guy who enjoys reading about money and economics, even if he doesn’t adopt the strategies offered here; and for the professional or sophisticated investor, who, to a greater or lesser degree, just might.--Andrew Tobias

1-0 out of 5 stars their example shows how bad they are!
go to the website it gives you bearish review of july6,2009; qqqq up from 34 to 40their own example shows you how stupid they are-- bear in one of the best months of the year!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been a very good artice
This book deals with how the amount of equity outstanding influence the price level in the stock market. If there are fewer stocks around prices go up, and vice versa. This is the author's liquidity theory. This is a very interesting concept and it is worth reading the book for this reason.

Having said this the book is very wordy and a sales pitch for the author's company. It could easily have been condensed into one 20 page article.

Three starts for the idea.

I have written several short reviews on trading books. The best way is to compare the score on the books I've read. Many reviews on amazon.com are just glorious 5 star reviews. I use all five categories; sorry but everything isn't "great".Books rated 5 are very good. Books rated 4 are good solid books well worth reading. Books rated 3 can be bought by some people who read a lot or have very specific needs. Books rated 1 or 2 I would not recommend buying or reading. Naturally all in my humble opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas
The author claims to have altruistic motives and does present some new ideas, which likely work. Unfortunately, it is difficultto collect all the data by oneself. The subscription service is expensive. If Mr.Biderman is truly altruistic, he will keep his subscription cost low.

5-0 out of 5 stars Predicting the short term direction of market
Charles Biderman thinks about the stock market differently. In his book, he uses liquidity analysis to very effectively predict the short term direction of market. He does it in a clear, simple and concise way.Is it a silver bullet?Of course not. There is no silver bullet! However, I have been an independent sales contractor selling TrimTabs Investment Research for nearly ten years and I can tell you that 29 of the largest over $1-5 billion hedge funds buy TrimTabs research. Why?Because it is original and unique research.I have come across no other similar research in all my years selling it.The book is worth reading for this reason alone.

Michael Alexander

2-0 out of 5 stars Started off great, ended poorly
I was riveted to the first several chapters because I came to the same conclusions concerning the "Stock Market Casino" that the author did.As the book went on, I learned about liquidity theory and was all excited that I was "on to something".As I read the recommendations for dollar cost averaging Vanguarg Mutual Funds and ETF's, I started to disconnect with the author. And then the author explained that it is difficult to compute liquidity theory because the data supplied to the public is delayed by at least a month making the data unreliable for timely investment decisions.I was also disappointed at the explanation of why the liquidity theory would have you getting out of the market during the big bull run of mid 2003 - 2004.He mentioned that the theory can sometimes be an art....So, now I believe in the liquidity theory but I'll have to figure my own strategies to use it. ... You don-t need to be a stock market expert. You don-t need to be a math whiz. You don-t even need a big bankroll. All you need is AIM.Automatic Investment Management. The money machine that takes the uncertainty out of investing-and teaches you how to make money in the market.Trusted by thousands of investors worldwide since 1977, this bestselling classic reveals Robert Lichello-s revolutionary formula for earning profits in stocks and mutual funds-automatically. Unlike other investment strategies that focus on stock selection, AIM relies on timing-and is designed to work in any kind of market with any size investment.Lichello originally developed AIM in response to the heartbreaking collapse of the great bull market of the 1960s-and today his ideas are more relevant than ever. AIM is easy, dependable, and it works. Simply put, it-s a money machine-just waiting to be turned on.Now Lichello has updated AIM for today-s market. Reformulated as AIM-HI (AIM High Intensity), AIM-HI will do for you what it has already done for millions- ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Using AIM in 2010
AIM requires volatility but it also requires that you don't pick a stock that drops dead and stays there.

Leveraged ETF's are the magic bullet. You can get 3xthe volatility of the SP500 or Emerging Markets or many other sectors. You can get 2x the volatility in a silver or gold leveraged ETF

The result is many trades in a year, you need about a 25% swing in order to generate a trade and you can get this. The trick is how often do you calculate-- Lichello did it once a quarter or once a month, but with these funds you might want to do it twice a month or even weekly because the moves can be quick and extreme.

To me its a great system; you get an amplified market performance but have lots of cash on the side for your buys and sells and the cash gives you the courage to hang in there in the scary times and AIM keeps you from selling out too early in a rally and missing a big move up--most of your ETF you still have even as it zooms up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Core Position Trading and How to make a Million
I'm always trying to build a better portfolio.Last year I heard that Jim Cramer (CNBC's Mad Money host) was preaching the virtues of trading around a "Core Position."

I wanted to know more about, "Core Position," trading and Googled it. The many citations led me to buy Robert Lichellos' 1977 book, How to make a Million in the Stock Market.

Lichello is an interesting author and provides us with a narrative of how stock investing was accomplished in the 1970's. So, it's a history book. But, it's also a book about a new trading system. In his book Lichello outlines his "AIM" method of buying low and selling high. It's basically a risk management method to be applied to your portfolio. In the book, Robert's new "AIM" system is loving and methodically described by the author.Robert says that using this system can make you a million in the stock market. Well that may be oversell. Authors are good at overstatement.

Still, is a fact that Jim Cramer uses this system in managing the profit and loss mitigation in his portfolio. Yes, he has modified the system to work his own way, but the basis of his system has its origins' in Robert Lichellos' work.

I see Robert Lichello as an original thinker and ahead of his time.I appreciate the effort Robert took to build and test his system. I recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is really a rolling stock strategy book
If you can foresee that the stocks that you are going to use this method for are going to move sideways for as long as you want to own them then this method will work for you. But then the author should have titled this book something like "How to make $1,000,000 automatically using rolling stocks".

The author recommends using quality stocks for half of your portfolio and volatile stocks for the rest (page 122).

Do not follow this strategy for a general index fund, like the Dow. I backtested the method using the Dow from 10/1928 to 4/2009 using monthly checks, as the author recommends. Using the improved 80-20 AIM-Hi method, the strategy only achieved 24% (21% for 50-50 the original 50-50 method) of the results of a buy-and-hold strategy for that same period.

I ran a test using the 50-50 original method for the 10-year Dow period that the author points to starting on page 106 (he used the NYSE) and had a gain of 21% for the whole period. The gain was 7% using the 20-80 method. You have to remember, though, that the market moved sideways that whole period.

If you could combine this method with a stock price break-out method then you would probably do pretty well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invest a little, get a lot
I started seriously investing back in 1985.I found a computer program called, "My Way" which looked like it would work well.It did, but there was no feed-back in the system. So I invested [.....] in this little book by Robert Lichello.God bless you Robert Lichello. You have made my family millionaires, Plus. The plus is that now when the market tanks, we understand how to profit from the confusion. Robert, your writing style is corny, but your thinking is pretty darn close to brilliant.I would strongly encourage anyone serious about investing to read this book and then say a prayer for Robert's soul.He left the world a priceless gift before he left this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for everyone interested in protecting their investments
When I first heard of this book, I thought it might just be another one of those overly hyped books. When I started to read it, within a few pages I realized this book contained some very valuable information. The more I read, the more impressed I was with the information that the author provided. The book provides a glimpse into what you need to do to become aware of your own investments. Sometimes it may come as a shock, which helps as that will provide the impetus to do something about your money. The author has a truly unique approach to how to buy and sell. It us not your usual method, but a very interesting and different methodology. One cannot help but be thankful for having purchased and/or read this book. This is, in my opinion a very important book for anyone and everyone investing their money in the stock markets and mutual funds. You will be glad you got this gem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars stock market barometer
This Book is a must read ,this book is not a novel so you really want to pay attention, but it will be well worth it.
Also you get a better understanding of how markets really work, the author was very clever and really refinded the dow theory.
The author really gets into the developments of markets and what makes them tick, Again this is not for the mental lazy person, and the benifits are timeless.Good Readings

2-0 out of 5 stars A confusing book inferior to Rheas book on Dow Theory
I found the book not so interesting even though this is the book that probably is the first Dow Theory book. I would much rather read Richard Russells The Dow Theory Today or Rheas "The Dow Theory". Both books are much better written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic elaboration of the Dow Theory
William Hamilton was the successor (both at the Wall Street Journal and in expounding the Dow Theory) to Charles Dow, and the one who clarified the Dow Theory as most people understand it today. To students of the DowTheory, and of Wall Street and Investment history in general, this is amust-have volume. Also see works by Robert Rhea.

1-0 out of 5 stars An unecessary defense of the stock market
The stock market barometer is a completely unecessary defense of what the stock market is. It provides an incredible amount of uninteresting and completely trivious information. It is definitely NOT a must read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another disappointing effort from Mark Crisp
When will I learn that anything by Mark Crisp is a complete and utter waste of money.

Ever get the feeling that something has just been flung together for the sake of a quick buck, and doesn't contain any real information of value?

This effort is the same usual amauture drivel as the rest of his work - not worth the money and all the information can be found by searching Google (which is often presented better with a more professional tone on free websites).

In my opinion anything by Mark Crisp should be avoided, the more of his work I read the more worthless it becomes.

Save your money, this will only lead to disappointment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Better Stock Mutual Fund Share Purchases
This book presents a value averaging purchase plan for stock mutual fund shares based on the S&P500 P/E ratio. After presenting background information on P/E ratios, the historical real returns of the S&P500 are presented versus its P/E ratio. The near linear relationship shows that when P/Es are high, ie prices are high, real returns are low. One feature of dollar cost averaging is to buy more shares when prices are low; however, investors can improve upon this by considering the P/E ratio to increase their periodic purchases when P/Es are low and decrease them when it is high. A thorough description of other asset classes and their roles in a portfolio is also provided, including inflation protected instruments. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Investment pro Michael J. Panzner offers an insider's guide to Wall Street that will appeal to investors on several levels. He starts with easy-to-comprehend definitions of stock market terms such as "short-selling" and "equity-derivative products," and advances to more sophisticated concepts. With his down-to-earth approach, he demystifies the jargon, hype and superfluous data. What's more, he provides an excellent account of the historical factors and recent innovations that have altered global finance. His "10 laws of the new investment universe" are useful and comprehensive. Unfortunately, Panzner tends to glorify the past, glossing over well-documented foibles to focus on modern sins. Still, he provides a frank and insightful view of Wall Street's seductive lure. We recommend this book to investors who want to understand today's market.

3-0 out of 5 stars nothing new, but detailed explanations
While the basic premise of the book is that "investing world has changes and therefore so should you", is certainly true, it doesnt really bring anything original or substantially novel. The author discusses in great detail, well supported by data and analysis, the impact on different aspects or the new "rules of the jungle". Topics such as as increased appetite for speculation are well know now, but the facts behind those conclusions are explained in a detailed manner.Overall, it is an interesting treatment of the topics, though brevity is not one of the author's strong points. Dont expect to find any significant information that will alter your portfolio, but it may give you some info on how things work in stock markets and some of the trends associated with trading.Could have been a 4 or 5 star book, but the arguments and explanations are a bit too long-winded....

2-0 out of 5 stars Longing for the good old days
I didn't warm to this book. The author seems to lament the 'good old days' when individuals were forced to relay their orders through brokers. This offered brokers a wonderful insight on the directions markets would take since they had first hand informationabout the next day's trading session, from the best and worst traders.A broker can make a lot of money with that.

Alas, these days are gone.People now use electrical order placement systems and brokers are just as clueless as the retail traders. Pity.Of course, few of us had this inside track and I'm not sure we need to lament its passing.

The musings described above make up the bulk of the book. Here is a summary of the changes. Each of these topics is given chapter long treatment.:

Intraday volatility:
New rule: Intraday share price volatility is on the rise.
Old rule: In the past, wide intraday share price swings were less common, and when they did occur they were often associated with unexpected geopolitical or economic developments.

Trading like commodities:
New rule: Stocks are increasingly being bought and sold like commodities.
Old rule: In the past, institutions generally bought and sold stocks based on traditional methods of investment analysis, often with a longer-term perspective in mind.

Approaches and attitudes:
New rule: Investing and reason frequently give way to speculation and emotion.
Old rule: In the past, institutional buying and selling was primarily driven by logic and measured analysis (although emotions have always influenced investor behavior).

Information and communications.
New rule: More information and faster communications often have unexpected consequences.
Old rule: In the past, information tended to circulate around the marketplace in a slower and more orderly fashion, and the telephone was the primary means of communication.

Derivatives:
New rule: Derivatives are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, the action in the derivatives market was generally secondary to what took place in the underlying cash markets (except on certain occasions, such as Triple Witching Fridays).

Seasonality and cycles.
New rule: Many seasonal and cyclical patterns are becoming less predictable.
Old rule: In the past, many seasonal and cyclical patterns were less widely known and were not affected by today's rapidly changing market forces.

Form and fantasy.
New rule: Substance and reality increasingly give way to form and fantasy.
Old rule: In the past, data produced and distributed by companies, analysts, government agencies, and others was less subject to error, distortion, and manipulation.

Market Indicators:
New rule: Many traditional market indicators are becoming less reliable.
Old rule: In the past, many market indicators were less widely known and were not affected by today's rapidly changing market forces.

Global factors:
New rule: Global factors and foreign investors are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, American investors and domestic concerns were much more relevant to the direction of U.S. share prices than overseas influences.

The book is also sprinkled with 'action plans'. Here are few:
"...when a stock abruptly breaks out of a clearly defined trading range on relatively heavy volume, creating visual "gaps" on a daily bar chart, this is often a sign that a dramatic change in the outlook has taken place."

"When volatility begins to intensify after share prices have fallen for an extended period of time, it often indicates that a downtrend is nearing an end, at least in the short run."

None of this interests me a great deal.Upon reflection, the title suggests a much better book, something along the lines of 'Post 2003 changes in securities trading rules, and how to use them for competitive advantage'.This book would investigate the surreal world of Sarbanes-Oxley, how securities are added/subtracted from the Russell 2000, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good read
The most appealing aspect of this book is the thesis itself -- the investment world is changing. This is the first book I've read that effectively addresses many of the cause-and-effect relationships taken place in today's stock global market.I thoroughly enjoyed the derivatives, trading like commodities and the global factors chapters.

Overall, I found this book to be a very good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
My reason for purchasing this book was because a number of experienced and well-known markets participants gave great reviews for Stock Market Jungle.Don't make the same mistake I made.I doubt that most of the reviewers listed in the book actually read it.The book itself adds little to anyone who is the least bit knowledgable about the financial industry.Your time would be better spent reading any one of a thousand other business/financial books. ...
