Given to the Spanish painter by Matisse, the red-nosed, bug-eyed female effigy called Nevimbumbao was a mysterious muse to some of the great developments of 20th century modernism. The art of Vanuatu-the eastern Melanesian island group between the Solomons, New Caledonia and Fiji-occupies a similarly obscure place in the world. "It's very powerful, very spiritual," says Kirk Huffman, co-author of Arts of Vanuatu (Crawford House). "From the point of view of the Pacific, it's possibly the least known." That's now changing. Like the towering, expressive-faced slit gongs that have become a national symbol since independence in 1980, Vanuatu's material culture is beginning to stand up and echo across the water. In 1997, an exhibition of exotic artefacts, many of them collected by the Swiss anthropologist Felix Speiser early last century, traveled to Basel's Museum der Kulturen and the Musée National des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie in Paris. "The visitor is struck not only by the great diversity of styles, but also by the materials used, in which the whole jungle seems present," marveled one reviewer. "Human skulls on wooden frames are overmodeled with plant-fiber paste, all sorts of leaves are applied as well as spider webs, wood, bark, stone and coral."

One could spend several months cruising here, but the pressures of returning to Port Vila, and the need to take the good wind when we could, meant we only had time for a few brief stops. We had Rob's birthday in Crab Bay with Klondike We arrived at Vao Island on a Sunday, and anchored behind a sand spit which had approximately 50 canoes beached there. We particularly liked were platforms with the ends of old canoes placed upside down for 'chicken houses'. The reason for so many canoes here is that the gardens for this densely populated island are on the mainland. Since no work takes place on Sunday, all the canoes were at the island. When we were sailing down between the islands the next day, we saw a beach on the mainland with canoes lined up, the dark asymmetrical shapes of the outriggers on the white sand looked just like a piano. Banam Bay has the Small Nambas Culture Club, and a guesthouse. Anyone interested in this aspect of Vanuatu culture should definitely put this spot on their itinerary and can make arrangements to do so from Port Vila. We also found the village interesting - watched them washing their clothes in springs that run out of the beach at low tide, enjoyed the pungent smell of cocoa drying in the sun, talked to the man who ran the local kava bar, and bought lovely bread made in a 'custom' oven. This stands as tall as a man, constructed of a coconut log frame filled with coral rocks. In the center of all this is a 44 gallon drum laying on its side and half filled with bricks. The end has been cut off and is wedged up as a door, using a stick and some burlap. The fire is built over the bricks, then the coals are removed once the oven reaches the desired temperature and the bread placed inside.

He wrote the book while stationed on Santo as a lieutenant during World War II, looking out to Ambae Island, his personal Bali H’ai - Coconut palms nodding gracefully toward the ocean. The Hon Sela Molisa, Minister for Finance launched two books in the Chiefs nakamal at Wunpuko Village North West Santo on Saturday 4 January 2003, the first anniversary of his wife, Grace Mera Molisa's death. "This is a historic occasion, because it is the first time that the first launch of two books has been held outside one of the main town centres in Vanuatu", the Minister said. "In our ni-Vanuatu culture we have always recognised the importance of history through our oral traditions. However, now we are in a modern society we must start to write our history down.'' "Grace valued history and was always writing, sometimes getting up early in the morning to write. It is thus fitting that we launch these books at the occasion of the first anniversary of her death", he said. More than 250 people attended the ceremony, which took place prior to the dedication of the grave of Grace and her father in law, Mandei Rongtuhun, who died shortly after her on 31 January 2002 in Port Vila. The two graves lie side by side behind Sela Molisa's house at Wunpuko. The crowd included all community leaders, chiefs and church leaders from every village around North West Santo - from the two Presbyterian sessions: Rua, Session around the cape into Big Bay, Malavuko to Molpoi, and Potunpei Session, from Olboi to Petowat. Representatives of the Trinity and the Praise and Worship congregations also attended.
