Governments play numerous roles in nuclear energy and radioactive waste management. On one hand, they may be active promoters of nuclear energy in many countries. On the other hand, they are also the regulators of things nuclear. This dual role often leads to complex relationships and overlaps between various government departments or ministries. The situation can become even more complicated when several government agencies claim jurisdiction over different (or sometimes the same) aspects. To complete the picture, you often have to add in different levels of government (e.g. local, regional, state, and national). An important point to remember is that the regulatory framework and laws are different in each country. International

This approach clearly benefits our projects because we can offer a broader range of resources. In addition, this provides VSJF the opportunity to share its approach to development with other public and private economic development practitioners. These partnerships also provide learning opportunities for VSJF and we have benefited from their examples as well. This network is a primary reason for the success of our program, and ultimately these partners are critical to the success of projects and our efforts towards a sustainable Vermont.

As reflected in these profiles, some states have integrated implementation of these requirements with their statewide accountability systems while others have separate systems in whole or in part.
