Extractions: There is a growing need in the United States for provision of in-home based or center-based child care and elder care. Some employers are making a collaborative effort to provide dependent care for their employees by establishing centers or expanding existing ones. To staff these centers with workers and to support in-home programs, training beyond a high school education is needed. An associate's degree program will meet this need. The demand for a dependent care career should increase in the future as the baby boom generation ages and assumes the responsibility of providing care for their elderly parents and as more young mothers pursue employment outside the home thereby needing care for their children. Students in the dependent care specialist program will comply with Shepherd College's requirements for admissions, basic skills testing, and appropriate course placement, including mandated remedial courses, which are not counted toward completion of the program. Students are subject to all college catalog requirements regarding academic standards, student conduct, and graduation procedures.
