The meeting also will occur just weeks before the beginning of most state legislative sessions and of the new 108 th Congress. The Fall Forum will look ahead to the issues that will dominate the agendas for state legislatures and Congress in 2003. It will also give legislators and staff the latest information on recently passed federal initiatives that they will need to implement in the coming months. Wednesday, December 11

Extractions: Expanding McLeod Hall The New Nursing Shortage Could there be a more helpless feeling than lying in a hospital bed after serious surgery? Then imagine ringing for a nurse and no one answers your call. Or perhaps worse, the person who answers your call doesnt recognize a danger sign that could jeopardize your life. Todays nursing shortage is very real and different from any experienced in the past. This shortage is evidenced by fewer nurses entering the workforce; acute nursing shortages in certain geographic areas; and a shortage of nurses adequately prepared to meet certain areas of patient need in a changing health care environment. As a result, there is a growing realization that the supply of appropriately prepared nurses is inadequate to meet the needs of a diverse populationand that this shortfall will grow more serious over the next twenty years.
