Extractions: PHOTO GALLERY Historical perspective I f one looks back the history of Myanmar in sports, participation of women in the traditional games, played both at the rural as well as urban settings, are very common, having no restrictions nor reservations in their participation, though there are a few distinctions between the type of games played by girls and women and those by boys and men. Such active participation in games and sports have promoted their physical and mental development. The earliest record of women participating in sports was in 1924, when women played football to raise funds for the victims of a cyclone disaster! But because of the social and cultural outlook and beliefs at that time, the event was generally disapproved and was roundly criticized by the media. In 1935, Myanmar women participated in golf for the first time in Pyay city and in 1936, two Myanmar women Ma Pwa Thin of Myaung Mya and Ma Khin Hla of Yangon participated in the All Myanmar Weight-lifting and Body Building Competition held at the Jubilee Hall, Yangon. This was sensational because weight-lifting was considered a sport only for men and as for the Body Building Competition, Myanmar women were supposed to be modestly dressed and properly covered up. To the astonishment of the audience, the two ladies demonstrated their abilities by lifting 250 lbs in the open class. It was only in 1989, after a lapse of over 50 years that weight-lifting competitions for women made a come-back.
