A Brief Overview Of The History Of Volleyball A Brief history. 1895 William G. Morgan created the game of volleyball. 19962person beach volleyball debuted as an olympic Sport. http://egham.members.beeb.net/aboutvb.html
Extractions: A bit about volleyball Originating in the USA volleyball is one of the World's most popular mass participation sports with an esitmated 800 million players. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played. A Brief History William G. Morgan created the game of volleyball. a special ball was designed for the sport. in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced.
Extractions: Julie Goedde (1986-89) A four-year letterwinner from 1986-89, Julie Goedde led the Hoosiers in total blocks and block assists for four consecutive seasons and paced the team in block solos as a sophomore, junior, and senior. She is presently the school record holder in career block solos (128) and career total blocks (521), while ranking second in career block assists (393). As a senior in 1989, the Evansville, (Ind.) Mater Dei High School product earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the 1989 Mideast All-Region squad. That season, Goedde recorded 94 block assists and 32 block solos. As a sophomore she recorded 116 block assists and 36 block solos on her way to earning honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades. In 1986, she played on the East squad at the U.S. Olympic Festival. Also an excellent student, she earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition on three occasions. Diane Hoerth (1986-89) After playing her freshman year at the University of Texas and her sophomore season at IUPUI, Diane Hoereth played in every match for the Hoosiers during the 1989 and 1990 campaigns. A product of Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, Hoereth paced the Hoosiers in kills as a junior and again as a senior and 50 times during her career she recorded double figure kills. Despite only playing two seasons at Indiana, she holds the IU career record for most matches with 20-or-more kills (17 occasions). In addition, she holds the school record for career hitting percentage (.290). An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection as a junior, she capped her career by being named second-team All-Big Ten. She was twice named to the Mideast All-Region squad, was a 1990 Academic All-Big Ten selection, and was a recipient of the Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award.

Extractions: Capture The Olympic Spirit These are some facts about some great Olympic athletes who show a lot of spirit! The Olympic Games are a worldwide stage where heroes are made and dreams are realized. Every Olympic Games has its surprise victories, and certainly one of the biggest surprise victories occurred at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. Billy Mills pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history in the 10,000-meter run with a stunning come-from-behind finish to win the gold medal. Bart Conner is the most accomplished gymnast in America. He is the only American person to win gold medals at every level of junior, national, and international competition. During the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he won an individual gold medal for his performance on the parallel bars and another medal for his participation on the U.S. team. Ann Meyers Drysdale led her team to the silver medal in the very first Olympic women's basketball medal competition. She was the first female full-scholarship athlete at UCLA, the first four-year, college All-American basketball player (man or woman!). Ann was the first team athlete inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame, and she was the first woman to sign a NBA contract! Yet she was the consummate team player. As a runner at UCLA, Gail Devers owned records in both the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles. When the 1988 Olympics approached, Gail won a spot on the U.S. Olympic team going to Seoul, Korea.

Each season the Club plans to have at least 7 girls teams, one team per age group from 12U to 18U serving approximately 70 St. Louis area youth volleyball players and their families. St. Louis VBC continues to attract talented coaches from the metropolitan area including coaches with USAV, high school and college experience. As a result of their guidance and commitment, the club has produced silver and bronze medalists at the AAU Junior Olympic, regional qualifiers for the USAV National Junior Olympic and All-American recognition for many talented athletes. The nationally competitive level of play demonstrated by St. Louis VBC teams at regional, invitational and national tournaments has earned the club a level of respect and helps to promote participation in the metro area. St. Louis Volleyball Club has made a conscientious effort to teach our players sportsmanship, citizenship, scholarship, teamwork and family lifetime values both on the court and off. We attribute our success and respect directly to a basic club philosophy of player development in the basic skills of the sport in the younger ages, always seeking top competition. As a player progresses with age and the club, we offer an increasingly competitive and learning environment that aids in the further skill development and exposure to the college level. The goal at each age group is to develop a team capable of competing at the USAV Junior Nationals.

King Teams Redeemed Pool Play Play started at 9 am (not 10:15 am as reported in the papers,) and the first matches set the tone for the whole day. In Pool A (Blue), Divisional rivals White River and Peninsula met for the third time this season. It was a two game match, but Peninsula took White River to duce before finally falling 16-14 in the second game. Although a loss, this was a big improvement for Peninsula in comparison to their regular season results. Meanwhile, Mt. Rainier and Sequim in Pool B (Gold) battled for over an hour and half, with Mt. Rainier ultimately prevailing, 15-13, 12-15, 15-9. Mt. Rainier appeared to have resolved some of their passing difficulties encountered in the League tournament, and the return of Kelsey Rapp to the lineup in the opposite position gave the Rams a little more offensive punch as Kelsey set Emily Melver for what was to prove to be many scores over the course of the day. The second round of pool play saw Fife defeat defeat Highline 15-6, 15-11, and Kennedy beat Washington 15-3, 15-12. The third round of pool play in the Gold Pool featured a match of Divisional rivals Mt. Rainier and Highline with no surprises, the Rams winning 15-2, 15-11. The Blue pool match was Kennedy versus White River. Like Highline, Kennedy had just played a match, and perhaps the Lancers were a bit winded, but for whatever reason, White River was able to dominate the play with their middle attack, and Kennedy was not able to stop them. The match was closer than the scores suggest, 15-11, 15-4, but it was a solid victory for White River. Of particular note, White River's setter Roxy Ross was able to run some up-tempo attacks in the middle even with fairly marginal passing. Ross had 25 assists in this match, and middle hitters Kyla Wytko and Sara Berndorf combined for 14 kills, and Shealun Campisi had 12 kills from the outside hitter position.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.
