Well considered balance to the emotional debate
Search for books on alternative therapies and you'll find a swag of books religiously devoted telling believers how clever they are.This book, however, is a rare example of an genuine investigation into the topic.It is readable, fascinating, well-founded and provides a much needed counter balance to the glossy volumes of false hope that exist.

Timely defense of the Scientific Method
It seems to me that most people have a favorable opinion regarding science. And we all, like it or not, use science throughout our lives. However, most people do not *think* like scientists. This book explains why it is important to understand why in the medical world certain things are done and certain things aren't.

Science is like a nice loaf bread, if you will. You love eating it but don't know how to make it. In order to enjoy good bread everyday you *learn* the recipe.

This book is a recipe for discerning fact from fiction in the scientific veterinary world and the complimentary and alternative medical world. But it's more than that even; it is a recipe for fun, suprises, and fulfillment as the principles outlined have far reaching applications beyond veterinary medicine.

'take this with a grain of salt'
This book is great, and hard.The authors are thorough, well researched, are up front about their philosophy and their reasons for writing this book.This is the grain of salt we professionals need to take along with our fascination with 'alternative & complementary medicine' options.If you are like me, steeped in traditional scientifically proven medicine yet curious about what ACVM (alternative and complementary veterinary medicine)can offer your patients, you'll find this book will bring you back to your scientific roots.It will educate you and ask you to think.This is not a bad thing.As practitioners with the title of DVM and holding a license to practice medicine and surgery we should know something about what we are advising our clients to do with their pets.
My advice is to read it, learn from it (there is some really good history on the evolution of medicine as its been practiced through the ages of mankind) and then decide for yourself what you want to do with ACVM.Use this book as part of your education in regards to ACVM.

Should be required reading for all veterinarians and animal owners.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who might be considering using "alternative" therapies on their animals and to veterinarians in general. Dr. Ramey discusses the historical development of scientific medicine and the development and resurgence of unproven and implausible treatments. Don't let the proponents of "alternative", "integrative" or "complementary" treatments fool you. There is really only medicine for which we have evidence and plausibility, and alternatives that are at best unproven and at worst dangerous quackery. Can scientific medicine be improved? Yes, and Dr. Ramey will be the first to admit it, but all of the advances medicine has made in the last 200 years have been due to science, not one or another forms of imaginative nonsense.
Kudos to Dr. Ramey for writing this clear, concise analysis of this subject.

Must-read for those who wish to include Alt in their practice!
I worked for a "homeopathic" veterinarian and watched animals get worse or die as a result of her presecribed "treatments".Homeopathy is junk science and junk medicine and SHOULD have no part in AVMA-sanctioned veterinary medicine.

Highly informative
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets, with numerous contributions by various experts. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful and referenced much of the material in my own writings.

A mine of information, very technical and thorough for all vets interested in alternative medicine and those who wish to learn more about it. I bought it 5 years ago and still have a lot of pleasure to read it again.Chapters after chapters, you fully understand that the holistic approach of a sick animal is the only worthwhile and that the complete cure is a reachable goal,not simply alleviate or mask symptoms like in the allopathic way. The author discusses many insightful techniques that should be used in pet medicine worldwide. He speaks of techniques that incorporate bio energy and accupressue. Often these methods are rebuked by vets who have no understanding or care about eastern (eg. chinese) medicine.This system of healing has been around for thousands of years! You'd be hard pressed to find better!
What a wonderful book! With chapters on every kind of alternative/complimentary med you can think of, this book lets you know what the thought behind the process is. Now you understand! Now you can choose! I found this book to be a bit tough for the layman but certainly worth the possible struggle to understand some of the terminology. I thought this book was so worthwhile that I bought it for my traditional vet and he thought the material helped to build a bridge of understanding between the practioner of traditional medicine and the alternative practice. If you're looking for facts as presented by the practioners of alternative therpaies, this book shouldn't be missed. Yes, it's pricey but it offers a reference that no other book can beat!

A fine piece of work
Anyone interested in the field should buy this book. I can be read by proff's as well as others, but having a university degree doesn't exactly make it more difficult, of cause. The book goes through lots of different fields of alt. med., and remembers the references as well as selected readings. So go get it, you won't regret it (though it is pretty expencive). ... You'll find diet,supplements, Western herbs, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and sometimes essential oils. There's even an "Author's Choice" section for each illness, so that if you're wondering which of various options to choose, both the vets list their recommendations.

The book is beautifully organized, fitting a tremendous amount of material into asmall format. Chapters include muscular/skeletal disorders; dermatological disorders; infectious diseases; immunologic disorders; endocrinologic disorders, etc. The illnesses are laid out alphabetically, with easy-to-see treatment options. Sidebars describe case reports with excellent Discussion, Treatment and Outcome sections.

At first I wondered whether the book would be too technical for me.But as I readalong, I was really impressed by the non-technical language, the thoroughness of the symptoms and treatments, and the book's excellent organization. Only the Chinese herbs sections are not accessible if you don't know traditional Chinese medicine, and this problem is addressed in an appendix with explanations of the uses and western names of the Chinese herbs.

Other appendices are helpful, too: "suggested oral dosages for herbs"; "suppliers" of herbs for easy ordering, and even a chart with acupuncture points. (If you know acupressure, you can use these points without needles.) For anyone doing chemo for cancer dogs, you'll get help here in figuring out a supportive herbal and supplement protocol.A fantastic book!

I honestly have not read much of it yet. I am only going through the intro, but I am finding it interesting. The only thing that has put me off so far is that they put in new chinese terms without defining them. I guess it is not important to know what they all mean, but I feel weird not knowing. It talks about upper, middle and lower burners and then talks about upper, middle and lower jiao. And I am guessing jiao means burner, but I would feel better if they stated that.

Great reference
My experience is that only quality books are published by Mosby as Mosby publishes college text books for the healthcare field. I have spent thousands of dollars with holistic and traditional veterinarians over the years-having some of my animals continue to be ill(auto-immune diseases and viruses are difficult).I have learned to educate myself and learn ways to keep my animals healthy through preventative care. Human grade or organic food has significantly made a difference as well as supplements. This book gives wonderful information regarding diseases and alternative herbs/supplements to use. I am careful,as not all herbs/supplements are safe in themselves and/or due to the harvesting country from which they come-this book gives a list of possible resources-most only available to the veterinarian, however, when I see a product from that resource on the shelf at the store or on-line I am comfortable trying it. This book was written for the professional and should be viewed as such. I recommend this book for enlightment of alternatives that may be available. There are many alternatives to choose from for any given problem, so that anyone can find something to help their dogs.

Excellent Reference Guide
I have had this book for a few years now and have found myself referring to it time and again. It is well laid out so that you can easily find the recommended holistic remedy for what is ailing your dog. Although western veterinary medicine is certainly valuable, the more we can use holistic healing and steer away from medications with possible side effects, the better off our dogs will be.

disappointment
This book gave me the distinct impression that veterinarians, too, have bought into the Wind-Cold-Damp metaphors that permeate TCM practice.When TCM vet herbal instructors can't explain how these herbs are scientifically working in our pets, and when they also can't assure that the ingredients are safe, I have to ask why vets are being taught and encouraged to sell these products.

I question the wisdom of veterinarians recommending products whose real, pharmacologic activities they know little about, and especially if they think that they are treating a disease caused by "Stagnation" and "Deficiency" rather than a legitimate diagnosis.

Excellent reference book for veterinarians
The book is well referenced and organized and, as such, is a great tool for veterinarians to have handy.Even if they're not prescribing herbs themselves, clients have often put their pets on herbal remedies and, at the least, the clinician needs to know our current state of knowledge about the effects of these herbs.The gaps in the book simply point out where we have little empirical knowledge at this point.Hopefully, continuing research will make it necessary for Dr. Schwartz to revise it in just a few years.

AVMA 2007 Lecture Excellent
I went to her lectures today and the notes--which she said were directly from the book--were excellent. I really enjoyed the talk and found several ideas that I'd like to try in practice for behavioral issues. Who wouldn't want to try St John's Wort or some other herbal for storm phobias, separation anxiety, urine spraying in cats, etc, in conjunction with or instead of anipryl, reconcile, or some other drug? I plan on ordering her book based on her lectures. I think it will be a valuable resource for alternative sources for common behavioral problems. As long as you try listed doses and warn your owners it's untested, I think the likelihood of severe problems (such as death) very low. I was very happy with her lecture and think the book will be just as informative.

Peppermint And Strawberries For Your Cat!
This book is not only very informative, it's very interesting as well.Who would have thought that nasturtiums have a natural antibiotic effect? Or that peppermint is good for your cat's travel sickness and strawberrieshelp relieve your cat's dry cough.

The book covers Aromatherapy,Homoeopathy, Herbal Medicine, Bach Flowers and Acupuncture. First aid tipsand handling emergencies are included as well. The book describes commondiseases and how you and your veterinarian can treat them.It even showsyou how to administer the treatment. It's not a big book, only 128 pages,but I've found those pages have quite a bit of useful information even if Inever choose to administer some of the therapies discussed.I did get lostamong the abbreviations and latin terms used for homoeopathic therapies,however, there is so much more to this book and I learned so much from itthat I'm glad I have it on my bookshelf.I'm using this book to helpmaintain my cat's healthy life.

Vibrational Healing Works!
The particular strength of this book is in the author's extensive experience with subtle healing remedies found in nature. Some people respond well to being pounded upon or consuming mass quantities of pharmaceuticals; others respond well to light touch or no touch therapy and a few drops of an herbal tincture in water. In my experience, animals fall more into the last category. This book is about "a few drops" (of essences) that can move mountains.

As a veterinary surgical technician many years ago, I experienced situations that could have responded to subtle vibrational healing --- if only we had known about it (such as acupuncture). Fortunately with the help of books like Sage Holloway's, this is changing. The author shows how working with subtle forms such as flower essences heals the whole self, not only the physical body. Moreover, she does not take things that work for humans and merely transpose them onto animals and call it a book).

"Westerners" might find some of the approaches in Sage's book hard to grasp if they have no experience working with subtle energies in nature, so it would be useful to readVibrational Medicine: The #1 Handbook of Subtle-Energy Therapies;Animal Reiki: Using Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life;Equine Acupressure: A Working Manual. Also there are some approaches missing from the section on Energy Healing Modalities that I would consider vibrational "medicine"(for example: Homeopathy, Reiki, Acupressure)but no problems, that's what the table of contents is for!

This book is clearly written, comes from the perspective of a great deal of knowledge, is practical yet detailed enough for the practitioner experienced with plant essences, and has a "Vibrational Remedies Cross Reference" Chapter tying things together. A great feature is that the author always directly links each remedy with specific uses for the animal. She also refers to cutting-edge approaches like healing with Elements and Inert Gasses, and Sound Healing --- and some wonderfully creative other ideas --- which are hardly ever heard about for humans much less animals! This is a wonderful book that fills in gaps not usually covered in other books. I'm glad I bought it and will keep as a valuable "desk reference" to energetic healing with elixers and essences for animals.

Thankful
Through the use of this wonderful reference I have learned a great deal about healing animals and myself. It is beyond thorough and contains enough of everything so that any ailment may be eased. Sage does an incredible job here and I am as thankful as our animals! She goes over everything from aromatherapy to gem elixers and flower essences. She explains how to properly dowse and muscle check. She is a master and this work is a beautiful masterpiece itself.

I had hoped to find more on helping my itchy and allergic bulldog but there is only one chapter on dogs.I needed more help than I got from this source.

Love this book!
I have been waiting for this book for many years. This is the best resource available for energetic healing for animals anywhere. I found it to be clear and concise, and easy to access very specific information from a wide and well researched database. Ms. Holloway's knowledge of the many areas of vibrational medicine is very thorough yet she presents this information in an easy to understand manner. I don't know what I would do without this book!

Must Have Book For Maltese Owners
This must have book for Maltese owners provides great insights into the health and grooming of these wonderful animals.This text written from a dog's perspective was easy to read, humorous and most importantly insightful.The suggestion on feeding, grooming and the effects on their systems was fantastic.Most importantly the information about how vet practices including vaccinations are life saving.Our small Maltese was "overdosed" by a vet who did not check the blood of the animal to see if the shot was needed and we almost lost our precious pup.We use this book weekly and believe it will be of great benefit to anyone who reads it.

A book on dog care changed my dog's life and saved me a fortune in vet bills.
The book is Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care, a national award-winner endorsed by countless holistic veterinarians and organizations and written by Jan Rasmusen. This charming book, narrated by a highly-opinionated 4-pound Maltese named Chiclet, teaches readers everything they need to know about holistic dog care. It includes 90 full color photographs and covers the gamut from avoiding over-vaccination, feeding for health, medicating carefully and much, much more.

Jan's investigation into dog care began after her Maltese, Jiggy, contracted a life-threatening autoimmune liver disease. She learned that many of us are unknowingly damaging our dogs' health by unquestioningly following recommendations promulgated by major pet food and pharmaceutical industries. Her shocking discoveries prompted Jan to help others learn vital lessons about protecting and caring for our canine companions.

Prior to reading the book, I considered myself a responsible animal guardian. As the problems continued, I sought answers from friends and associates. One day a friend sent us a gift: a copy of Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Today, I'm convinced that this gift probably saved Spirit's life. It certainly opened new doors of knowledge, understanding and advocating for our animal companions.

After all the tried and failed treatments for Spirit's ongoing bouts of severe diarrhea, recurring ear infections, watering eyes and a host of other problems, we discovered some simple life saving solutions. Below are a few of our discoveries.

*Defrosting Spirit's raw food medallions in the microwave proved to be the cause of her chronic diarrhea and the resulting dehydration. Microwaving the food alters the fat composition, producing diarrhea and other digestive problems for some dogs.

*After the third round of antibiotics for a recurrent ear infection, we tried a safe topical medication that treats ear infections resulting from bacterial and yeast infections. Spirit experienced immediate relief and the problem appears to be resolved.

*When I inquired about Spirit's watering eyes and the resultant staining of her fur, veterinarians at 2 clinics informed me that it was common to the breed and no reason for concern. I was advised to use over the counter tear stain removal products to keep her eyes and fur clear of the matting. However, the problem continued to worsen, leading me to seek additional help. Utilizing Jan's book, web site and blog and their articles on holistic care, I discontinued the tear stain products and tried a holistic medication for allergies. The improvement is amazing. Spirit has since seen a new veterinarian. He, like Jan, advised against the use of tear stain removal products, stating that these products could worsen the condition because the real cause isn't addressed.

One of the reasons Spirit's health progress is so remarkable is her condition at the time of the rescue relative to her condition today. Spirit is now a certified service dog assisting me with the challenges of living with a traumatic brain injury. In addition to helping me, Spirit shares her story with children and adults in the community. On one occasion she discovered a fire hazard outside of her apartment complex preventing possible injury, property danger and worse. Her keen senses and courage earned her an appreciative following and lots of praise from management. She taught, and continues to teach us, that with proper nutrition, health care and tender loving care, dogs have a lot to offer us humans.

When sharing Spirit's story, I always include the role of Jan, Chiclet (her tiny "co-author) and their ongoing quest to make life better for canine companions like Spirit. On a side note, Spirit's feline siblings, Lucy and Jazz, are also benefiting from the health, nutrition, safety and other information contained in Scared [...]

Informed consent
As a dog owner, it is my responsibility to make the best informed choices for my precious puppies. This book was enlightening to the max and opened my eyes to the ways in which the lives of our beloved pets are shortened by profit based veterinary medicine and "nutritionally complete dog foods".
Though I've been aware of the dangers of commercially prepared dog foods for some time, I had no idea of the dangers of vaccinations...especially giving little dogs like mine the SAME DOSE that big dogs get...come on!!
IMHO, this book is required reading for every dog owner who wants their precious pup to be around for many years beyond the "usual lifetime". An alternative approach to standard dog care can and does lengthen their lives and makes their lives far more comfortable. Isn't that what we would want for our own family members - because our pets ARE our family members.
