1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless book; not helpful; gets 0 stars
I love books, but this one I may burn as kindling. I own a bunch of flower essence books, including several flower essences + animals. I've owned this book for years and it was a waste of money. Not helpful AT ALL! Full of fluff. Don't pay more than $5. One star is too many, but Amazon won't let a person choose 0 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for pet owners!
This book is a must have! I learned more about my cats in Lila's book than I did in all my years living with them. Her approach to explaining remedies that will help our pets is done in such a loving manner. Even if you don't have a pet now, this book will guide you in being a responsible pet owner when you do adopt a pet.I have found her remedies and flower/fruit essences to be very helpful in managing the health of my cats. The advice works!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing animal refrence
This book is for any loving pet owner. Whether it be cats or dogs you favor, this book will come as an amazing resource for anyone looking to help or better understand our four-legged friends. Ms. Devi offers a very thorough explanation of animal behavior and their reactions to the flower essences. She also does a surprisingly understandable walk-through of the flower essences. Definetly a five-star (*****) book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides remedies for helping pets
Flower remedies for humans have been covered, but Flower Essences For Animals is the first tailored to animals which provides remedies for helping pets. From using essences to understand animal behaviors to learning how different essences benefit different animals, Flower Essences For Animals provides an intriguing survey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Guiding Wisdom forOur Pets
I had found flower essences to be an extremely useful method for myself and other humans to heal some of worries and fears of everyday life, so I turned to Ms. Devi's book with great anticipation for how I might also improve my relationship with my pets ( 1 dog, 4 cats) and how the flower essences might improve their relationships with each other and feel better about themselves.Ms. Devi gives much guiding wisdom for better understanding the living situation from the pet's perspective, and how the flower essences can most help each pet according to their individual personalities and needs.I have seen my relationship with my pets grow even more meaningful and can attest to the fact that if you attend to their emotional needs, in addition to their physical needs, you will be rewarded with the tremendous well of unconditional love which our pets have available for us.I especially like the index of personality traits and symptoms at the end of the book - very helpful for those "quick-need" situations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on flower essences + animals (limited to Bach only, which is not good)
I've studied flower essences for over ten years. I own several books on flower essences + animals, and this is in the top four. I use it all the time for my several cats.

However, I am giving this book only four stars. As nice as this book is, it is limited to ONLY Bach's original 39 flower essences mainly from England. Nowadays, flower essences are much more than the first 39, including flowers from North America (Northern California, deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida); Scotland; Australia bush; New Zealand; South Africa; South America; Central America; to mention a few. Bach died young in 1936, leaving his work unfinished, and many people in the last 70 years have taken up where he left off, much expanding the number and quality of essences (depending on where in the world the flowers are indigenous).

Frankly, books on Bach's first 39 flower essences are so ubiquitous that I now avoid them in favor of books covering flower essences from other parts of the world besides England. Plants of England are not the only plants in existence! I am REAL tired of books getting published involving only Bach's original 39 essences. Even though Bach "bumped into" his first 39 essences, Bach's essences are not the holy grail of flower essences! Look further afield than Bach's essences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeopathic Care For Cats
If you've made the wise choice to explore alternative healthcare for your cat, you can't do better than to begin here. Compiled of the best advice from holistic vets from around the country, this book is a great opportunity to pick the brains of those vets who are walking the walk. I having nothing in the world against earnest cat-lovers who write books on homeopathic care for cats - many of them are extremely knowledgeable and experienced - but there's nothing like the extra little peace of mind that comes from knowing you're getting your advice from a recognized expert in the field.

Bear in mind that this book is now 9 years old. Obviously, the conclusions reached were based on information available at the time, and advances in our understanding may have rendered some of them outdated. But there will never be a definitive healthcare book, as our knowledge evolves continuously. On the whole, what you'll find in this book is excellent practical advice, and a great source to inform your decisions on how to address your cat's unique condition and circumstances.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Veterinarian's Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book!

It is loaded with great information for a more natural approach to pet care. There are stories from Veterinarians treating cats with diseases such as Feline Leukemia, and how the cat live out a happy normal life with the proper diet and supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my FAVORITES!www.ItsForTheAnimals.com
Dr. Winter is a co-founder of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assoc. (AHVMA).I really appreciated his great presentations at their Annual Conferences over the years. The one I treasure most was his guided meditation, as a Shaman leading us to that underground cave and connect with our Spirit Guides / Power Animals. Thank you, Dr. Winter!

His unique book, "The Holistic Veterinary Handbook", published in 1997 still provides otherwise unavailable information for the veterinarian and the pet owner. I found that the charts for dosages of supplements to be particularly helpful. A good reference book and it's one of my Favorites: [...].

The publisher, Galde Press states: "The veterinarian who wishes to treat companion animals ("pets") by healthy, non-invasive, holistic methods will find Dr. Winter's manual an indispensable guide. Everything's here, organized into easily accessible categories for all your veterinary needs, from cat psychology to ovarian cysts, from abscesses to fleas and worming. This is the one handy reference you can't do without. Includes client handouts.ISBN 1880090473, 8-1/2 x 11, 224 pgs.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a friend for "my best friend".
This is the first book review that I have ever written.I am drawn to do so because;"The Holistic Veterinary Handbook" by William Winter is such a gem.I am very thankful for William's hard work to compile such a great reference for a holistic approach to animal health.

William's veterinarian knowledge and schooling has been brought to a place of insight, understanding and wisdom through his gifts of writing, organization, clarity and seeing from a bigger picture a larger more "whole-listic" point of view for health.

"The Holistic Veterinary Handbook" is a quick, complete, and usable reference that resources from several modalities of treatment; diet, herbs, flower essences, vitamins, exercise, and massage just to name a few.

I also enjoyed how the book was lightly peppered with quotes of wisdom and consciousness from shamans and philosophers.

The handbook is complete with over 40 pages of handouts for clients. These handouts are time saving, well written for the layperson, and full of information that will help keep the client educated and involved with the healing and health their pets.

In short, I am very thankful for William's dedication to animal health demonstrated through the writing of this book....

5-0 out of 5 stars His Basics are Timeless
As man becomes more technologically advanced, the application of this knowledge tends to change society and its practices. In the field of communication for example, just look at the difference between the first Morse Code transmission and the Internet. But still, there is nothing like sitting down to dinner with a good friend and having a great talk. The same can be said about veterinary medicine. Although change has been huge and constantly upgrades, there are basics which will stay fundamental. Especially in the field of holistic veterinary medicine which already tends to be a throw-back to older medicinal practice, some of the basics are just common sense and timeless. Will's manual is a fine representation of these principles. It is always handy around our clinic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Pet Owners
Although Dr. Winter's manual is technically written for other holistic vets, I've gotten a lot out of it as a lay pet owner. I use it together with Anitra Frazier's New Natural Cat to try to understand what's going on with my guys when something doesn't seem quite right. It has helped me, with its clear layout of symptoms, factors and options, sort through both what and how serious a given problem might be. It also, under the "holistic challenge" heading in each section and through the numerous essays in the back, has helped me understand the difference between holistic and conventionalapproaches to health problems, which in turn has helped me be a better participant in my pet's care. The Holistic Veterinary Handbook isn't the only resource I use, but it's a valuable one. ... Read more

This is a great companion to the Modern Horse Herbal, which I also own. These books compliment each other and have become an invaluable part of my equine health library. You will refer to it often and I recommend it completely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and educational
This book is written with the care of the veteran equine (over 15 y.o.) in mind. However, all the information contained within is applicable to younger and/or performance horses, and covers topics such as herbs and methods of delivery, homeopathy, aromatherapy and massage. Well-written by the founder of Hilton Herbs in the UK, everything is in an orderly fashion. Treatments are listed in sections by disorder/problem. I like this book very much, but only wish the index was more in-depth, and there was a more general chapter on herbs and what to use each one for. Overall, a very good book and I recommend it. ... Junk. The author wants a 'good 'ol boy' pat on the back from other veterinarians."Atta boy, Davey, you tell 'em!Tell 'em all what quacks those alternative practitioners are.Atta boy!Sick 'em boy.Atta boy!"Oh why oh why doesn't Amazon allow for zero starts.Or even negative stars? The author does not know the first thing about alternative health care for man nor beast.Just a bias, non-open minded view. How do I know?Because he published the same kind of non-researched tripe about me.In one essay he lied about me at least three times. He probably thought I wouldn't see it.Don't believe ANYTHING this author writes.Go online and just read articles for free. This book is pure swill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased
The editor collected this set of articles in a very biased, one-sided and narrow fashion. No objectivity. The editor has obviously not had any experience dealing with horse situations where "modern/conventional" medicine has failed or under FEI competition rules where invasive techniques are illegal.

At least Dr. Ramey is consistent with his tenacious view of alternative therapies.I would be more interested if he were to turn the microscope on conventional vet medicine to see which procedures and techniques had the gold seal of the scientific method: double blinded, randomized and controlled.Medicine and the scientific method are both fantastic but there may be others....

5-0 out of 5 stars Bound to make the touchy-feelie crowd hysterical
An excellent scientific approach that will no doubt send the oddball "alternative" therapy fans into a complete swoon. However, they'll not be able to come up with a single serious scientific article to refute the science in this book -- after many decades of frantic, fruitless attempts.

The sad fact is that these "alternative" therapies simply do not work, as far as any scientific study has ever been able to tell. And the few little studies they occasionally cite are scientifically worthless, as a bit of research always reveals.

This always brings out the worst in the homeopathic/chiropractic/crystal therapy/needle-stickers, etc., and they usually revert to claims that it's all just a plot by the evil veterinary/pharmaceutical community. A glance at some of the critical reviews on this site are typical -- you'll notice that they don't refer to any scientific publications or peer-reviewed journal articles ... because, sadly, they can't.

This will, also sadly, do little to dissuade those desperate and gullible souls who will grasp at anything hoping to help their four-legged friend. After thirty years in dog & horse rescue, I understand the feeling all too well, but after seeing the results of alternative medicine vs. real veterinary medicine, I know that alternative medicine is 99% pure moonshine and marketing.

This book should be required reading for all horse, dog & cat owners, period. We all need to know the facts in order to do right by our furry friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not an objective viewpoint
This author is well-known for his disparagement of alternative therapies. Do not buy this book if you are looking into alternative therapies for your animals as the author is strictly a "Western Medicine" kind of
guy and very biased. Having used chiropractic, homeopathic, and acupressure on my horses, dogs, and cats, alternative therapy is extremely helpful when provided by a competent and trained professional. Research your practioner's training and background. See "Homeopathy for Horses" by Tim Couzens, "Veterinary Acupuncture" or "Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice" by Allen M. Schoen. All excellent reference for the holistic practitioner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Looked forward to a balanced and scientific review BUT
was very disappointed and felt the author did a disservice to balanced critical review and assessment. I did agree with a number of the findings in the books but the author should have provided less personal opinion and adhered to balanced scientific review rather than providing sweeping generalisations of certain therapeutic modalities. Absolutely regret having bought this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A dissappointing book
A book written by doctor who is interested only in TV appearances and radio shows than seeing patients who need help cannot be recommended. There is not even a single chapter regarding vomiting in dogs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe What You Read - Save Your Pet
I had looked into this book and decided to take my pet with cancer to his practice in South Salem NY called Smith Ridge Veterinary. Seemed to be very promising, so of course you believe a doctor. Yet people can write all they want on what they did to help animals but you really don't know. I believed it all and I am sorry I didn't look into this clinic further before going. I had a pet with cancer and after looking into many options which we went through surgery, chemo, nutritionist, I saw this book and went for a consultation. Of course he doesn't take new patients so one of his associates saw us. They tell you all they can do for the pet and if one thing doesn't work, there are many options. I went with the best option not to waste time and was told it would definitely help not hurt. I was informed the Vitamin IV Therapy would boost her system, get her to eat better and help even though the doctor thought my pet looked bright-eyed and active while there. We left her for the 3 day therapy. She came out worse than going in for this and frightened from whatever occurred while in their care. My pet wouldn't even eat once she got home and had to feed her through syringe the rest of her life and watched her deteriorate. I contacted them numerous times to find out what happened to her there. I questioned why she won't eat, why she had a nail missing and while going to my regular vet for help they wondered why her veins were in such poor shape. My pet even screamed which she never did in her life just before they brought her out to be discharged. All Dr. Goldstein's associate Dr. Ruskin would say is "she ate for us here I don't know why she won't eat for you". I begged for help and asked about an appetite stimulator that my regular vet could provide if Dr. Ruskin would tell us it is okay for her to take and Smith Ridge wanted to charge me for a phone consultation to answer the question which would be over $55 on top of over $1200 we spent there. We needed to question them because our regular vet doesn't know about the holistic's and cancer med's she was on and what would interfere. They never said we should bring her in because of her condition and offered no help. She is now gone and although I know it is cancer, her last days since being there were horrible for her and us. We watched her suffer at home. We lost our little pal and her sister's are lost without her. I can only hope others think before you believe what is written. You can say anything in a book- I know first hand from experience. Everyone has an opinion but I saw for myself, not through someone. Think before you do anything! I wish I had a second chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST have if you love your critters!
I am very impressed with the knowledge shared in Martin Goldsteins book.I have been educated on how to bring about my pets ultimate health and therefore incorporate this knowledge to better my own wellness.I will be passing this book on to anyone who loves their pets!

5-0 out of 5 stars MY BIBLE DR MARTIN GOLDSTEIN'S THE NATURE OF ANIMAL HEALING
I refer to this book as my BIBLE!!!I use it all the time, I refer it to friends of mine and have purchased it as a gift for numerous friends. No home should be without this book.I love the list of suppliers Dr. Goldstein provides in the back of the book, if not for his referral I don't know that McLeod the 1.5 yr old Golden Retriever I adopted would have ever survived the Lyme's Disease he had. It was so bad, he couldn't even jump.He had been on THREE ROUNDS of Antibiotics to no avail.I looked up Lyme's in Dr. Goldstein's book and purchased the remedy he suggested from the company he referred me to and I was amazed at the end results!!!I have used many of his remedies and referred my traditional vet to his suggestions.I am indebted to Dr. Goldstein for the health of my pets!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare treatment works!
Both my 13 year old Maltypoo and 15 year old Llasa Apso have been battling Cushings Disease for more than 3 years.I've tried various homeopathic and conventional medicines with some success but the side effects have been significant, anorexia, kidney issues and muscle wasting.Trilostane has been the most effective but only for a year or so.

Reading Dr. Goldstein's suggestion for treating Cushings, I was amazed to find that phosphatidyl serine often works in dogs who do not respond well to other treatments. After beginning 50 mg. morning and night on both dogs, their cortisol levels are now in the low/normal ranges, appetites normal and activity increased.Dr. Goldstein was the only vet to offer this treatment option which I've shared both with my holisitic and conventional vets whom I hope are passing this information along to their Cushings patients.

I've found so many other treatments that simply work wonders for my "furry kids."Dr. Goldstein is truly the "Gold Standard" among veterinarians.I'm so grateful for the extra time he's given us together in good health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start!
This book is a great overall place to start in the area of equine therapy and message.I found it a great addition to my other books on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars too acedemic
I was disappointed with this book because it is too acedemic. It covers a lot of theory but is not very practical with only a few diagrams. While a professional massage or physical therapist would enjoy reading it, a horse owner wanting easy to read instructions with diagrams, would be disappointed. I would borrow it from a library, but it is not worth buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little more technical than I had planned for
This book is extremely detailed in anatomy. Although I like it, it's a little more detailed and technical than I had in mind for massage and stretching. It's almost like a mini text book. I found it a little on the heavy side for reading. I think this book is only for the most serious of students. It is chock full of technical descriptions, diagrams and some good black and white photos. I found myself skipping around trying to find something I might want to try on my horse but this book really isn't good for that. It really is more of a manual for the student of equine massage and physical therapy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow going at first...
Technical jargon galore in the first few chapters but after that the rest is easier for us non-vets to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy to Understand
This book on equine massage therapy was very clear and easy to understand. It pinpointed specific places to do specific exercises, and gave clear pictures of the anatomy you were dealing with. How to do the exercises, andhow to improve your work with the horse in general, was very wellexplained, and made sense for someone who is not an expert. ... Read more
