Product Description
The proliferation and growth of Electronic Design Automation(EDA) has spawned many diverse and interesting technologies. One ofthe most prominent of these technologies is the VHSIC HardwareDescription Language, or VHDL. VHDL permits designers of digital modules, components, systems, andeven networks to describe their designs both structurally andbehaviorally. VHDL also allows simulation of the designs in order toinvestigate their performance prior to actually implementing them inhardware. Having gained the ability to simulate designs once encoded in VHDL,designers were naturally confronted with the issue of testingthese designs. VHDL did not explicitly address the requirement toinsert particular digital waveforms, often termed test vectorsor patterns, or to subsequently assess the correctness of theresponse from some digital entity. In a distributed design environment, or even in an isolated one wherethe design was subject to review or scrutiny by another organization,de-facto methods of testing and evaluating results provedfaulty. The reason was a lack of standardization. When organization Adesigned a circuit and tested it with their self-developed test toolsit had a certain behavior. When it was delivered to organization B andB tested it using their test tools, the behavior was different. Wasthe fault in the circuit, in A's tools, or in B's tools? The only wayto resolve this was for both organizations to agree on a testapparatus, validate its correctness and use it consistently. While VHDL was an IEEE standard language, and consistency among myriaddesigners was fairly well guaranteed, no such standard existed fortest waveform generation and assessment. Hence, the value ofstandardization in the design language was being negated by the lackof such a standard for testing. The Waveform and Vector Exchange Specification, or WAVES, wasconceived and designed to solve this testing problem -- and ithas. Being both a subset of VHDL itself, as well as an IEEE standard,it guarantees both conformity among multiple applications and easyintegration with VHDL units under test (UUTs). Using WAVES and VHDL for Effective Design and Testing will servemany purposes. For the WAVES beginner, its tutorial will make theapplication of WAVES in typical, standard usage straightforward andconvenient. For the more advanced user, the advanced topics willprovide insight into the nuances of these useful capabilities. For allusers, the tools, templates and examples given in the chapters, aswell as on the companion disk, will provide a practical startingfoundation for using WAVES and VHDL. ... Read more

Product Description
VHDL is a hardware description language that allows thespecification of a digital system over different levels ofabstraction. It supports behavior specification during the earlystages of a design process and structural specification during thelater implementation stages. Originally introduced as a hardwaredescription language that permitted the simulation of digital designs,VHDL is now increasingly used for design specifications that are givenas the input to synthesis tools which translate the specificationsinto netlists from which the physical systems can be built. Oneproblem with this is that not all of its constructs are useful insynthesis. VHDL has data structures, such as files and pointers, whichare useful for simulation but not for actual synthesis. As a result, synthesis tools accept only subsets of VHDL. VHDL Modeling forDigital Design Synthesis covers the synthesis aspects ofVHDL, keeping the simulation specifics to a minimum. Audience: Working professionals as well as graduate orundergraduate students who can use the book to get acquainted withVHDL and to learn how it can be used in modeling or digital design. ... Product Description
Digital Systems Design with VHDL and Synthesis presents an integrated approach to digital design principles, processes, and implementations to help the reader design much more complex systems within a shorter design cycle. This is accomplished by introducing digital design concepts, VHDL coding, VHDL simulation, synthesis commands, and strategies together.

The author focuses on the ultimate product of the design cycle: the implementation of a digital design. VHDL coding, synthesis methodologies and verification techniques are presented as tools to support the final design implementation. Readers will understand how to apply and adapt techniques for VHDL coding, verification, and synthesis to various situations.

Digital Systems Design with VHDL and Synthesis is a result of K.C. Chang's practical experience in both design and as an instructor. Many of the design techniques and considerations illustrated throughout the chapters are examples of viable designs. His teaching experience leads to a step-by-step presentation that addresses common mistakes and hard-to-understand concepts in a way that eases learning.

Unique features of the book include the following: VHDL code explained line by line to capture the logic behind the design concepts; VHDL is verified using VHDL test benches and simulation tools; Simulation waveforms are shown and explained to verify design correctness; VHDL code is synthesized and commands and strategies are discussed. Synthesized schematics and results are analyzed for area and timing; Variations on the design techniques and common mistakes are addressed; Demonstrated standard cell, gate array, and FPGA three design processes; Each with a complete design case study; Test bench, post-layout verification, and test vector generation processes.

Practical design concepts and examples are presented with VHDL code, simulation waveforms, and synthesized schematics so that readers can better understand their correspondence and relationships. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Read and Devoid of Coherent Explanation
I thought this book was completely lacking in what should have been it's primary focus: teaching the constructs and methodology of coding in VHDL, specifically for synthesizable hardware descriptions. The only thing the author did succeed in doing regularly was regurgitating VHDL syntax and standard packages while including pages and pages of code that was extremely poorly explained.

I had already learned Verilog so I am comfortable with what an HDL looks like and I could basically follow what Chang was trying to convey in his code, but not once did I feel that he adequately explain the mechanics or reasoning behind any of his code. The entire book used poor English, and clearly was not proof-read thoroughly by a competent editor. Here is an example passage picked at random:

"The latch enable signal LATCH_EN is generated as follows. A signal FRAMEn_DELAY is generated by delaying FRAMEn by one clock cycle using an inferred D-type flipflop, as shown in lines 22 to 29. LATCH_EN is obtained in line 30."

That's wonderful. This "explanation" is completely useless. It says nothing that isn't already apparent from the code listing. No further explanation is given as to what LATCH_EN is doing, why it's needed, etc. This example is par for the course. Furthermore, NOT A SINGLE COMMENT EXISTS IN ANY CODE LISTING, except when comment syntax is explained or as just a section separator.

I found this book completely inadequate for learning VHDL as a first HDL. If I hadn't already known Verilog, I would have to buy another book to get any insight into anything other than syntax and standard packages, but the use of English was so shaky and distracting that I wouldn't even recommend the book for that purpose. Almost anything would be better than this. Try "A VHDL Primer" or "A VHDL Synthesis Primer" from Bhasker. He wrote clear and concise Verilog books (of the same titles) and I'm sure he would not disappoint.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas, Mediocre Publishing
This book works through several interesting engineering examples. It isn't a book for learning VHDL, and it is sketchy on details about VHDL syntax. Also the 2 1/8 page Index is very short.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Synthesis titles
K.C. Chang's treatment of VHDL synthesis is good and it helps you get a grasp on what some of the tools will generate from your VHDL.

VHDL designers come in a couple of flavors, there are those who know how they want to do something and need to express it in VHDL, and there are those who know what they want something to do and need to know how to tell VHDL to synthesize that. This book caters a bit more to the first group, people who have in their head the circuit they want to synthesize.

In general, I recommend this book as a companion to Ashendon's book (The Designers Guide to VHDL) as that book treats the language more thouroughly. This book does jump right in and assume you've read Chang's other book on VHDL (but the again, the Ashendon book is better in that regard.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Who needs this book, and when?
When first starting VHDL, I picked up this book and found it somewhat hard to follow. After some initial reading, I had to give up and put it on the shelf, and then began looking for other easy books to read. One after another, I finally bought a dozen of VHDL books, some of which I wished I had not. Among these books, I found that Andrew Rushton's "VHDL for Logic Synthesis 2nd" is a wonderful beginner's reading; I got some VHDL coding skills with "Essential VHDL, RTL Syntheses Done Right" by Sundar Rajan; Peter Ashenden's "Designer's Guide to VHDL" is good, but too thick to read from cover to cover; Kevin Skahill taught me important programmable logic concept with "VHDL for Programmable Logic"...

After all these books, I still felt uncertain, lack of something. Then I came to understand that I needed some good real world design examples, something real, not just demo. I took this book again from the shelf, Woo, totally different now! This was what I needed now. The author doesn't waste time telling me which is better, Verilog or VHDL, or which is the more useful package, std_logic_arith or numeric_std. He just shows me with excellent examples what real world engineers do in their projects; so I gradually understand what I will do in face with real world problems. By now I learnt to know that when possible I'll use std_logic_arith package in my design in spite of its proprietary, because by doing so one can get rid of worrying about type conversions at the ports, and therefore avoid possible mistakes in the code; I know how to use logic hiding, source sharing, variable using skills to get better designs.

The author provides more examples in his new book: "Digital Systems Design With Vhdl and Synthesis: An Integrated Approach", but after reading them over and again, I still think the first book is better. In my opinion, it's really concise and to the point. Though there are some minor problems with it, such as incomplete references, lack of important package listings, I give it solid five stars!

2-0 out of 5 stars misleading condition
I bought this book used and under condition it said very good. The further descriptions said there may be markings on some pages but otherwise is like new. This was untrue, when I received the book there were pages missing. More importantly the pages I needed were missing. I did not buy this book to have crucial pages missing and I am very disappointed with the pretense under which it was purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Actually this is an excellent book to teach digital systems and VHDL, and Mr. Kleitz was happy in the content displayed by him. I use his book to teach Digital Systems and Introduction to VHDL courses and I have obtained excellent results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes you from zero knowledge to a firm foundation in an accessible format
Mr. Kleitz leaves no stone unturned in this excellent introduction to digital electronics. This book will take you from zero knowledge to a complete understanding of fundamental digital theory. Topics covered include: the basics of number systems and logic gates, Boolean algebra, arithmetic circuits, multi/demultiplexors, interfacing different logic families, flip-flops, counter circuits, shift registers, multivibrators, the 555 timer, A/D and D/A converters, digital design, several forms of memory, microprocessors, and microcontrollers. Concepts are explained from the bottom up using accessible language and clear diagrams. You will not find another digital electronics textbook that is written as clearly. In fact you would be hard pressed to find any technical textbook that does a better job of clearly explaining such challenging topics. Each topic progresses through theory of operation, circuitry examples, and finally implementation to a CPLD using both graphic design and VHDL in Quartus software. The Quartus software and all CPLD examples are included on a CD-ROM. Despite a previous review, I found VHDL coding was thoroughly explained for all covered digital topics. This book gives you a firm enough footing in VHDL that you will be able to pursue more advanced coding on your own. I have seen books that jump immediately into more advanced VHDL at the expense of a comfortable knowledge of the basics. It is also common in books that cover VHDL to only lightly cover the theory of operation and circuitry of the VHDL logic. This book empowers you to continue your learning by giving you an understanding of the hows and whys of digital electronics. Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish...

2-0 out of 5 stars The title is very misleading
The title is misleading

This book describes the very basics of the digital starting from logical elements and ending with shift and BCD registers. It barely touches Altera's Quartus 2 and VHDL language. If you are a student, who is just starting digital design class, maybe this is a good book. You'll learn the digital fundamentals very well (I would rate it 5 stars).
If you want to know how to program VHDL, advanced patterns or Quartus 2, this book is not for you!

Product Description
Ideal for a first course in digital electronics, yet comprehensive enough for use by students at the senior design project level and EET professionals, Digital Design with CPLD Applications and VHDL uses programmable logic as the primary vehicle for instructing readers in the principles of digital design. More specifically, emphasis is on Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) and the software tools used for their programming, with a decided shift away from fixed-function SSI and MSI devices.Immediately following discussion of digital fundamentals (e.g., Boolean algebra, logic minimization, combinational and sequential circuits), Digital Design with CPLD Applications and VHDL introduces its readers to Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs). Subsequent chapters on the MAX+PLUS II design environment, combinational logic functions, arithmetic circuits, latches and flip-flops, PLD architecture, counters and shift registers, and state machines are all based primarily on CPLDs and VHDL programming. By featuring VHDL and MAX+PLUS II applications throughout the book, readers are guaranteed exposure to this new digital paradigm as an integral part of their training, rather than as an optional add-on. Digital Design with CPLD Applications and VHDL also includes a CD-ROM that provides the reader with a complete digital design and prototyping system that can be used at school…or at home. Included are graphic design files, VHDL files, plus all of the simulation files from the examples presented in the book. Readers may opt to run simulations or program CPLDs with these ready-to-use, error-free files. Or, they may choose to use the files as templates for their own modifications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of digital principles on CPLDs
This book provides a good review of basic principles of digital design in the context of CPLDs.The designs included on the CD are for Altera's Quartus II, but can be modified for any VHDL based design. The author presents designs in both text (VHDL) and schematic form.

Although the book Digital Design Fourth International Edition by Mano is the standard text in digital design, this book provides some introduction to basic concepts, as well.In addition, the examples allow the reader to quickly jump into VHDL based designs on CPLDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CPLD book with practical examples
The teaching of digital electronics using CPLD is very useful, the book covers theory, truth table, gate level implementation. The examples show you how to create a module, for instance,a multiplexer. It doesnt only end here, it further demonstrate the application of the multiplexer. From there, you can have better understanding from gate level up to system level. I benefit a lot from this approach. The examples are very useful despite I am not writing in VHDL.

The book also explain the internal architecture of CPLD, starting from the history development of programmable logic devices. If you want to learn on CPLD, this is definitely the book for you, even if you are not using VHDL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This is a good book for beginners to digital logic and VHDL. It spends a lot of time explaining how different components like encoders, decoders, muxes, state machines, etc work. That's good for people who haven't been exposed to the material before. If you want to learn that stuff and apply it in VHDL, it's a great book. If you're just trying to learn one or another aspect, there are probably better books out there. If you want to learn VHDL from the book and already know a fair amount about digital logic, it's tough because you keep on skipping stuff you already know and and then later find out that there was VHDL information buried in that section on seven-segment displays. Similarly, people just trying to learn digital logic who are uninterested in VHDL will probably find that they spend a lot of time skipping past explanation of VHDL. Add in the fact that lots of space is taken up by screenshots of Altera software, and the book ends up containing surprisingly little information for its size. People who want a thorough discussion of digital logic or VHDL should look elsewhere. Beginners will probably be right at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to digital design
We used this book for an intro course on computer engineering.

The book, despite being the 1st edition, is very clear and concise, and I turned to it a number of times when the lectures weren't as clear and specific as they might be. Duecks book delves into a bit more detail with more examples {on things like flipflops, latches etc} than other similar books on the market. It also relates the material learned to actual computers looking at the structure of RAM in home PC's.

We didn't use the VHDL or CPLD portions of the book, so I cannot comment on their usefulness... but judging by the rest of the book they should be well written.

I recommend this book for a good introduction to digital electronics.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rules!!!
This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen.I do not know of another digital book like it.

Product Description

As almost no other technology, embedded systems is an essential element of many innovations in automotive engineering.  New functions and improvements of already existing functions, as well as the compliance with traffic regulations and customer requirements, have only become possible by the increasing use of electronic systems, especially in the fields of driving, safety, reliability, and functionality.  Along with the functionalities that increase in number and have to cooperate, the complexity of the entire system will increase.

Synergy effects resulting from distributed application functionalities via several electronic control devies, exchanging information through the network brings about more complex system architectures with many different sub-networks, operating with different velocities and different protocol implementations.

To manage the increasing complexity of these systems, a deterministic behaviour of the control units and the communication network must be provided for, in particular when dealing with a distributed functionality.

From Specification to Embedded Systems Application documents recent approaches and results presented at the International Embedded Systems Symposium (IESS 2005), which was held in August 2005 in Manaus (Brazil) and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

The topics which have been chosen for this working conference are very timely: design methodology, modeling, specification, software synthesis, power management, formal verification, testing, network, communication systems, distributed control systems, resource management and special aspects in system design.

Static methods are very successful in deriving crucial properties (e.g.timing behaviour) of safety critical systems. Some information in the analysed program are not available either because they cannot be determined statically or because they were intentionally sacrificed (i.e.abstracted) to make program analysis tractable. These abstractions make program simulation nondeterministic. This book describes the algorithms and semantics developed and used in building an abstraction-aware compiler that derives/generates pipeline analysis from an abstracted VHDL specification of the target microprocessor. This analysis is used in a commercial tool frame for deriving upper bound over execution time of critical tasks. This book is useful for computer scientists and engineers concerned with computing timing analyses based on VHDL specification of the target hardware. ... Product Description
The need for reliable performance of computerisedsystems is well-known, yet the security verificationof hardware systems is often none-existing orapplied in an ad-hoc manner. Hence in this book itis investigated how language-based securitytechniques can be adapted and applied to hardwarespecifications. A novel policy language is presented for expressingpermissible information flow using expressiveconstraints on the execution traces for programs.Based on the policy language a security property isproposed and shown to be a generalised intransitivenon-interference condition. The means to verify theproperty is provided in the terms of a staticinformation flow analysis. Practical implementations of embedded systems arevulnerable to side channel attacks. In particulartiming channels have had a great impact on thesecurity verification of algorithms forcryptography. In order to address this, anothersecurity property stating the absence of timingchannels is presented. Again, verification isprovided by a static analysis, which identifies thetiming behaviour of a program. ... Read more

Product Description
Embedded systems are usually composed of several interactingcomponents such as custom or application specific processors, ASICs,memory blocks, and the associated communication infrastructure. Thedevelopment of tools to support the design of such systems requires afurther step from high-level synthesis towards a higher abstractionlevel. The lack of design tools accepting a system-level specificationof a complete system, which may include both hardware and softwarecomponents, is one of the major bottlenecks in the design of embeddedsystems. Thus, more and more research efforts have been spent onissues related to system-level synthesis. This book addresses the two most active research areas of designautomation today: high-level synthesis and system-level synthesis. Inparticular, a transformational approach to synthesis from VHDLspecifications is described. System Synthesis with VHDL provides a coherent view of systemsynthesis which includes the high-level and the system-level synthesistasks. VHDL is used as a specification language and several issuesconcerning the use of VHDL for high-level and system-level synthesisare discussed. These include aspects from the compilation of VHDL intoan internal design representation to the synthesis of systemsspecified as interacting VHDL processes. The book emphasizes the use of a transformational approach to systemsynthesis. A Petri net based design representation is rigorouslydefined and used throughout the book as a basic vehicle forillustration of transformations and other design concepts. Iterativeimprovement heuristics, such as tabu search, simulated annealing andgenetic algorithms, are discussed and illustrated as strategies whichare used to guide the optimization process in a transformation-baseddesign environment. Advanced topics, including hardware/softwarepartitioning, test synthesis and low power synthesis are discussedfrom the perspective of a transformational approach to systemsynthesis. System Synthesis with VHDL can be used for advancedundergraduate or graduate courses in the area of design automationand, more specifically, of high-level and system-level synthesis. Atthe same time the book is intended for CAD developers and researchersas well as industrial designers of digital systems who are interestedin new algorithms and techniques supporting modern design tools andmethodologies. ...
