Product Description
A Designer's Guide to VHDL Synthesis is intended forboth design engineers who want to use VHDL-based logic synthesis ASICsand for managers who need to gain a practical understanding of theissues involved in using this technology. The emphasis is placed moreon practical applications of VHDL and synthesis based on actualexperiences, rather than on a more theoretical approach to thelanguage. VHDL and logic synthesis tools provide very powerful capabilities forASIC design, but are also very complex and represent a radicaldeparture from traditional design methods. This situation has made itdifficult to get started in using this technology for both designersand management, since a major learning effort and `culture' change isrequired.A Designer's Guide to VHDL Synthesis has been writtento help design engineers and other professionals successfully make thetransition to a design methodology based on VHDL and log synthesisinstead of the more traditional schematic based approach. While thereare a number of texts on the VHDL language and its use in simulation,little has been written from a designer's viewpoint on how to use VHDLand logic synthesis to design real ASIC systems. The material in thisbook is based on experience gained in successfully using thesetechniques for ASIC design and relies heavily on realistic examples todemonstrate the principles involved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great tutorial
I am an EE but spent most of my career programming in C.This book is an excellent tutorial, beginning with the basics and gradually covering the more complex aspects of VHDL.It clearly explains the difference betweensequential (traditional) programming and concurrent programming--both areused in VHDL.It also clearly defines the differences between themodelling stage (not covered in detail) and the design stage (RegisterTransfer Level - which is covered in great detail).Finally, he explainshow to set up a test bench.Within 2 months of reading this book, otherengineers were coming to me for advice.I literally wore out the binding! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Lied about shipping!!!!!!
The sellers of this book, advertise a low shipping cost. But when you receive the package you are going to be surprised by the extra shipping charge that the Post Office is going to lay on you. That's right this seller stuffs this book into a small flat rate envelope that exceeds the size limitations. So the post office turns around and charges you the recipient. Of course you can deny picking it up, but if you're like me and need this book for school, you really have no time to send it back. My advice, only buy a book when Amazon stocks it, otherwise Amazon will do nothing to get your money back as in my case.

2-0 out of 5 stars terminology !!!
this is one of the terible book that i ever have in my life. This book i would say it is belong to digital terminology rather.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to combinational, sequential logic and vhd
Very easy to read and a good introduction to digital logic circuits.Too many books on VHDL try to teach the hardware design language assuming the reader knows how each of the logic circuits are modelled or the books skimp over timing issues.This book takes the time to show you how logic circuits operate, how timing works and then gives you the VHDL scripts to model the circuit.Though not particularly advanced with the projects that are presented in the book, I do like the emphasis on timing and troubleshooting circuits. Definately not a reference for the intermediate or advanced digital designer, but a good book to get you started thinking about how VHDL relates design process. The book loses a star for its overly simplistic coverage of CMOS and DSP technology. Get another book for that. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This textbook teaches VHDL using system examples combined with programmable logic and supported by laboratory exercises. While other textbooks concentrate only on language features, Circuit Design with VHDL offers a fully integrated presentation of VHDL and design concepts by including a large number of complete design examples, illustrative circuit diagrams, a review of fundamental design concepts, fully explained solutions, and simulation results. The text presents the information concisely yet completely, discussing in detail all indispensable features of the VHDL synthesis. The book is organized in a clear progression, with the first part covering the circuit level, treating foundations of VHDL and fundamental coding, and the second part covering the system level (units that might be located in a library for code sharing, reuse, and partitioning), expanding upon the earlier chapters to discuss system coding. Part I, "Circuit Design," examines in detail the background and coding techniques of VHDL, including code structure, data types, operators and attributes, concurrent and sequential statements and code, objects (signals, variables, and constants), design of finite state machines, and examples of additional circuit designs. Part II, "System Design," builds on the material already presented, adding elements intended mainly for library allocation; it examines packages and components, functions and procedures, and additional examples of system design. Appendixes on programmable logic devices (PLDs/FPGAs) and synthesis tools follow Part II. The book's highly original approach of teaching through extensive system examples as well as its unique integration of VHDL and design make it suitable both for use by students in computer science and electrical engineering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this is the one
i cant believe i overlooked such a perfect book for such a long time. I been searching every material to get a thorough knowledge of vhdl but never seen like this for a "beginner". most of us in college try to learn vhdl by tutorials i guess, but they are never enough. By the way, i must mention that this is not the book you learn digital design concept. This is just for the vhdl part- which is the best-. If you are a complete starter i recommend you to this order: study the digital design book of wakerly along with this book. and when you are ready to take a next step get the second amazing book "the fpga prototyping by vhdl examples"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but has a narrow focus
Pedroni's book is an inexpensive and great introduction to VHDL. However, you should know what you're buying.

Here's what the book is:
1. an excellent overview of all the major features in VHDL, independent of platform
2. a series of good examples that illustrate:
a. how to use an HDL to describe various logic circuits, including FIR/IIR filters and division circuits
b. good code style

Here's what the book is NOT:
1. an introduction to logic and digital circuits
2. an introduction to RTL design
3. an advanced discussion of VHDL synthesis or modelling

To make full use of this book you should have synthesis/modelling software (basic ISE or Quartus is fine) and an FPGA development board.

You also have to have a reasonable understanding of logic circuits before you read the book, or VHDL will not make much sense to you.

I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a good introductory or reference book. However, if you need an intro to logic circuits or a book covering advanced design techniques, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Thank you! the shipping was fast, and I could use my book the day that I needed. The book was in excellent conditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Great book for beginner. I'd special like the session of chapter 12.4-Digital filter, 12.5 neural-network. and 12.6 problem (solution example). Well, it would be better if the author add on "wavelet" section in the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best VHDL book out there
Not much else to say.This is the best VHDL book I've seen.

If you're new, it might help to buy "VHDL for Programmable Logic by Kevin Skahill" along with this book.I read through Skahill's book first which gave me a better idea of what's going on under the hood in VHDL.However, I quickly out grew Skahill's book and came running back to Pedroni.Flat out, this is the best VHDL book out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a good book
I learned VHDL and developed a number of working designs using this book. It features many examples which may be used as skeleton for design blocks.

It does not teach theory of digital design; it demonstrates how to implement design in VHDL so that it can be synthesized.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, but a little thin in description
This book covers the basic features of VHDL, but the explanation of some of the language features is a little thin. Sometimes, the book reads like a math text book that is full of proofs, but very little explanation of the proof (remember those books?). A reader who has some familiarity with VHDL will get more out of this book than someone who is just learning VHDL for the first time. However, the book does have some good VHDL examples which makes it a useful text.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent ,very nice.
Really i enjoyed reading this book.now i got confidence well on vhdl.The book is very well defined to the point. Previously I had two books but those were filled with unnecessary explaination and nonsense examples. This book explain the facts to the point with plenty of examples. I think that it best for the startup and also for the experienced peoples for their reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much design, not enough VHDL
I guess I was looking for a different book. I'm already quite familiar with hardware design, so I wasn't looking for a book to teach me that. I already have the IEEE VHDL standard document, but that's like reading a phone book. I wanted a readable handbook of the VHDL language - I never found that, so I settled for "VHDL for Designers" instead.

I come from a software background, programming in the large. I was looking for a book to teach me the language. For a programmer, that includes the record types (like C structs), 'generate' and 'generic' for parameterizing my design, recommended style for combining operator overloads with component definitions, proper use of libraries, packages, and multiple architectures, and so on.

This book is just the baby steps of VHDL. It's very focussed on its examples, and seems to give just enough VHDL for each example. It's OK for design at the "Hello world" level, but not much past that. It has most of the basic language constructs, but shallow discussion of them. The organization doesn't really lend itself to use as a language handbook.

Still, it does cover the basics. I'll just have to tough it out for the rest of the language. I still use the book, but I'm still looking for a better one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book in VHDL
This is the book one should have who is doing something or anything in VHDL. Previously I had two books but those were filled with unnecessary explaination and nonsense examples. This book explain the facts to the point with plenty of examples. I think that it best for the startup and also for the experienced peoples for their reference. ... Read more

Product Description
ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF DIGITAL SYSTEMS WITH VHDL integrates industry-standard hardware description language (VHDL) technology into the undergraduate digital logic course. Author Allen Dewey observes that the widespread use of VHDL in specifying digital system designs is driving change and innovation in industry, and defining a new skill set that engineering students must master to design, model, communicate, and implement digital systems. VHDL provides a formal mechanism for describing digital systems in a format easily processed by computers, succinctly capturing the basic concepts of digital systems engineering and harnessing the power of design automation technology. This book first presents combinational and sequential systems and their design, along with logic families and integrated circuits. It then interlocks these subjects with discussions of structural and data flow modeling, synchronous behavior, and algorithmic modeling of digital systems in VHDL. This dual-track organization of conceptual and VHDL-related material makes the book easily adaptable to one- or two-semester courses and a variety of teaching approaches. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook overall
First off, another reviewer mentioned disappointment that this is not primarily a VHDL book. Just to clarify, this is a textbook for an undergraduate class in digital logic design that happens to teach VHDL, so those looking for a text primarily on VHDL will be disappointed. With that said, it does a good job overall of introducing the subject. Its explanations are generally clear, and it introduces all the foundations in a well-organized manner.

My one complaint was the fairly poor index and reference material, both of which could have used a little more work. While this book certainly has reference material, it wasn't especially helpful overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good approach
There are not many books out there that can describe VHDL as good as this book does. I used this book as an introduction to Hardware logic in my EE classes and was always happy with the contents of the chapter. Although, some help was provided for the questions at the end of each chapter. In the advanced FPGA classes, this book provided a good reference whenever I forgot the basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Poorly Organized Text
Given the large number of VHDL books out there, this book comes up signficantly short.Although the title clearly implies this is a VHDL book, actual VHDL is not introduced until Chapter 11; the first ten chapters explain various digital design concepts.This type of instruction is better left to other sources.While the explanation of VHDL modeling is clear enough, the order in which concepts are explained are puzzling at best, and maddening at worst.The terribly incomplete index is also frustrating- it's not possible to look up VHDL constructs or keywords for syntax!My advice would be to explore other VHDL books- this one is best left alone. ... Product Description
From the Foreword..... Modern digital signal processing applications provide a largechallenge to the system designer. Algorithms are becoming increasinglycomplex, and yet they must be realized with tight performanceconstraints. Nevertheless, these DSP algorithms are often built frommany constituent canonical subtasks (e.g., IIR and FIR filters, FFTs)that can be reused in other subtasks. Design is then a problem ofcomposing these core entities into a cohesive whole to provide boththe intended functionality and the required performance. In order to organize the design process, there have been two majorapproaches. The top-down approach starts with an abstract, concise,functional description which can be quickly generated. On the otherhand, the bottom-up approach starts from a detailed low-level designwhere performance can be directly assessed, but where the requisitedesign and interface detail take a long time to generate. In thisbook, the authors show a way to effectively resolve this tension byretaining the high-level conciseness of VHDL while parameterizing itto get good fit to specific applications through reuse of core librarycomponents. Since they build on a pre-designed set of core elements,accurate area, speed and power estimates can be percolated to high-level design routines which explore the design space. Results areimpressive, and the cost model provided will prove to be very useful.Overall, the authors have provided an up-to-date approach, doing agood job at getting performance out of high-level design. The methodology provided makes good use of extant design tools, and isrealistic in terms of the industrial design process. The approach isinteresting in its own right, but is also of direct utility, and itwill give the existing DSP CAD tools a highly competitive alternative.The techniques described have been developed within ARPAs RASSP (RapidPrototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors) project, andshould be of great interest there, as well as to many industrialdesigners. Product Description
Rapid Prototyping of Digital Systems, Second Editionprovides an exciting and challenging laboratory component for anundergraduate digital logic design class. The more advanced topics andexercises are also appropriate for consideration at schools that havean upper level course in digital logic or programmable logic. Design engineers working in industry will also want to consider thisbook for a rapid introduction to FPLD technology and logic synthesisusing commercial CAD tools, especially if they have not had previousexperience with the new and rapidly evolving technology. Two tutorials on the Altera CAD tool environment, an overview ofprogrammable logic, and a design library with several easy-to-useinput and output functions were developed for this book to help thereader get started quickly. Early design examples use schematiccapture and library components. VHDL is used for more complex designsafter a short introduction to VHDL-based synthesis. The second edition of the text now includes Altera's 10.1 studentedition software which adds support for Windows 2000 and designs thatare three times larger using the new 70,000 gate UP 1X board. Alldesigns in the book's CD-Rom have been updated to work with theoriginal UP 1 board or the newer UP 1X board using the new Alterastudent version software. A coupon is included with the text forpurchase of the new UP 1X board. The additional logic and memory inthe UP 1X's FLEX 10K70 is useful on larger design projects such ascomputers and video games. In addition to the new software, the second edition includes an updatechapter on programmable logic, new robot sensors and projects,optional Verilog examples, and a meta assembler which can be used todevelop assemble language programs for the computer designs inChapters 8 and 13. ... Product Description
FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) can be found in applications such as smart phones, mp3 players, medical imaging devices, and for aerospace and defense technology. FPGAs consist of logic blocks and programmable interconnects. This allows an engineer to start with a blank slate and program the FPGA for a specific task, for instance, digital signal processing, or a specific device, for example, a software-defined radio. Due to the short time to market and ability to reprogram to fix bugs without having to respin FPGAs are in increasingly high demand.

This book is for the engineer that has not yet had any experience with this electrifying and growing field. The complex issue of FPGA design is broken down into four distinct phases - Design / Synthesis / Simulation / Place & Route. Numerous step-by-step examples along with source code accompany the discussion. A brief primer of one of the popular FPGA and hardware languages, VHDL, is incorporated for a simple yet comprehensive learning tool. While a general technology background is assumed, no direct hardware development understanding is needed. Also, included are details on tool-set up, verifaction techniques, and test benches. Reference material consists of a quick reference guide, reserved words, and common VHDL/FPGA terms.

  • Learn how to design and develop FPGAs -- no prior experience necessary!

  • Breaks down the complex design and development of FPGAs into easy-to-learn building blocks

  • Contains examples, helpful tips, and step-by-step tutorials for synthesis, implementation, simulation, and programming phases

1-0 out of 5 stars 3/4 filling, 1/4 (poor) content
When you read this book, you end up wasting your time on the numerous repetitions (often of common sense advices).

Only one example of FPGA design, with the listing filling pages with code that is nearly cut/paste with different values.

Too many useless screenshots (what is the point in displaying 3-4 runs of the tool with/without error, when you've only one line of the screenshot that changes ?) sometimes, screenshots are following to the point that the last one refers to 5-6 pages ago.

If you want to learn about FPGA, forget about this book... there is nearly nothing about the actual langage and I'm not even sure that the only example is good coding practice (if I compare with codes from OpenCores for example)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this book
I really hate to give such a negative review.You have to admire a person taking the risk of writing a book. However, it is obvious that either:

1.The other has done very little FPGA programming or
2.The author just threw together the book without any regard for accuracy.

I have a feeling it is a little of both.I wish there was a lower score than one star for this book.I believe that most people will find this book more harmful than helpful.

While reading the book, I have found numerous errors in the example snippits.For example, both examples for the shift register (listing 2-8 and 2-9) will simply not work.In listing 2-8, it appears the author is attempting to create a left shift register.However, during the left_shift process the code overwrites the contents of each bit before shifting.Of course this will result in filling the register with copies of the shift data.Clearly instead of the code being this:

Internal_shifted_data_out(0) <= shift_data;
Internal_shifted_data_out(1) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(0);
Internal_shifted_data_out(2) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(1);
Internal_shifted_data_out(3) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(2);
Internal_shifted_data_out(4) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(3);
Internal_shifted_data_out(5) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(4);

it should be this:

Internal_shifted_data_out(5) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(4);
Internal_shifted_data_out(4) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(3);
Internal_shifted_data_out(3) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(2);
Internal_shifted_data_out(2) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(1);
Internal_shifted_data_out(1) <= Internal_shifted_data_out(0);
Internal_shifted_data_out(0) <= shift_data;

Simulation of the two different codes verifies this problem.

There are numerous other errors scattered throughout the book.I would recommend not buying this book and just getting more accurate information available from the numerous websites.If you decide to get this book, I would bear in mind that most of the examples have significant bugs.

I do feel really bad about giving such a poor review but this book really isn't worth the paper it was printed on.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a very skimpy book
The back page is written really well, but the content is not half as good. It's skimpy and confusing. There are segments of codes scattered throughout the book. The author gives you an impression that the tutorials will provide the codes for the reader to download and try, but there is nowhere on the internet that the codes were available. Following the book, I went to the [...] and found the book companions site [...]. Well, this book is not even on the list. I wish the author and the publisher be more responsible. ... Read more
