Excerpt: Vietnamese dragons (Vietnamese: ) are symbolic creatures in the folklore and mythology of Vietnam. They were strongly influenced by Chinese dragon myths, comparable with other Oriental dragons. According to an ancient creation myth, the Vietnamese people are descended from a dragon and a fairy. To Vietnamese people, the dragon brings rain, essential for agriculture. It represents the emperor, the prosperity and power of the nation. Like the Chinese dragon, the Vietnamese dragon is the symbol of yang, representing the universe, life, existence, and growth. The 5th-generation grandson of Shennong, Lc Long Quân- king of the dragonkind living near the ông sea, married a goddess, Âu C who was the daughter of the birdkind king Lai. Âu C bore 100 eggs, which hatched into 100 sons. The first-born son became the king of Lc Vit, the first dynasty of Vietnam, and proclaimed himself Emperor Hùng Vng. The First was followed by Hùng Vng The Second, Hùng Vng The Third and so on, through 18 reigns. This is the origin of the Vietnamese proverb: "Con Rng, cháu Tiên" ("Children of Dragon, Grandchildren of Gods"). The Vietnamese dragon is the combined image of crocodile, snake, lizard and bird. Historically, the Vietnamese people lived near rivers, so they venerated crocodiles as "Giao Long", the first kind of Vietnamese dragon. Dust collector
I was not impressed at all.Not much effort was made to explain how and why the proverbs in Vietnamese and English match up.This one will sit on the shelf collecting dust.

A little bit weird
I tried reading this book to my kid.The problem is...I don't connect to the proverbs.I've never heard my parents use them.I don't really understand the words used.The explanation in English isn't too interesting.

interesting comparison of Vietnamese and Western Proverbs
Proverbs are part of how we instill values in children. It is interesting to see that some values are global when seeing these Vietnamese ones. There are 22 proverbs that have very similar meanings just with different wording between the Western and Vietnamese versions. I recognized most of the Western ones and could relate with all of them. A good selection of Vietnamese legends
Schultz' selection of 32 Vietnamese legends is one of the first English collection and translations of classic Vietnamese stories. Mr. Schultz was a retired Navy officer who lived in Vietnam in the late 1950s. The stories which he presents show some of the Chinese aspect of Vietnamese culture. Among them we find also a version of the Cinderella story in a Vietnamese cultural setting. In selecting and translating the tales Schultz was helped by native experts. The book is meant for the general public. It is written in a beautiful English style and gives the reader information on the imagination and the ideals of the Vietnamese people. Wonderful book even for children who learns English as a second language.
This is one of the greatest book, and is also a perfect book for the children who learns English as a second language. There are lots of useful idioms and phrasal verbs for beginning ESL students. I recommend every young non-native speaker to study with this fantastic book.

Darling children's book
This is a darling book to share with your children or grandchildren. It reminded me of hearing stories from my grandmother and has illustrations that match the story line perfectly. It drives a child's imagination and tells a simple, friendly story. I just read it to my granddaughter on Skype so I could show her the pictures as I read and it kept this 2 1/2 year old interested from beginning to end. Children from 2 to 10 will find it fun...and adults will love it too! More children's books should be written with this joyful storyline. The size of the book is easy to hold and the colors are bright and cheerful. Highly recommended.

Charming Read!
The Golden Slipper:A Vietnamese Legend is a version the common Cinderella story (there seems to be one just about everywhere doesn't there?).This is the story of Tam (Cinderella), Cam (the wicked stepsister, only one in this story), and Stepmother (no name is ever given, she is simply called Stepmother).We have all the traditional elements, Tam's father dies soon after marrying the stepmother (the story here suggests that it was perhaps of a broken heart over the way the Stepmother treated Tam), leaving the girl to the usual abuses (being made to work both the rice farm and clean the house and wait on her Stepmother and sister).Along the way, she is befriend by a small catfish, the "royal rooster," and the old farm horse; each of whom she treats with kindness...feeding both the catfish and the rooster from her own meager food bowl and by allowing the horse frequent stops to nibble on the grasses while working the fields.

As is always the case, the vain and spoiled stepsister and the stepmother head off to the Autumn Festival to meet the Prince while Tam is left at the farm to clean an entire cart of rice to pay for her spoiled sisters new festival clothes...and we all know how this plays out...though the WAY it plays out is given a Vietnamese twist and of course we have the usual happy ending.You'll have to read if you'd like to know how the "fairy god mother" and the "golden slipper" come into play here, and it's a charming twist on the traditional tale that won't leave lovers of Cinderella stories disappointed!I give it five stars, it's an excellent retelling with charming details that make it a nice change from what most of us are used to reading here in the United States.One final note, each book in this series comes with a one page summary of the legend, including other names it's been called and a bit about the history how the story developed and what its significance is, so you don't just get the story...you get the context as well! This is something that I really enjoy in this series and it's one of the reasons that I recommend it.

It's not a story like any other cinderella story. It was more magical and with the author's description and the illustrator's animation, you willfind it interesting. More than that, you will explore what adventures Tamwill lead you to. With a fairy, a fish, a harvest festival and a pair ofshoes, Tam had find her true destiny.
