ADC - good stuff
ADC maps are without a doubt the best out there. The reason the map focuses so much on Fairfax County is that Fairfax IS NoVa. But if you need to venture outside of FFX, ADC has a whole line of maps covering the other counties.

Title could be a bit more informative
This really should be titled "Fairfax County" because that's about all it covers.Or "DC suburbs" perhaps.I found the "Regional Northern Virginia" atlas to be a lot bigger help in househunting in Northern VA as it covers 4 whole counties.Just read the descriptions carefully to make sure which "Northern Virginia" atlas you need.ADC maps are fantastic though.

Excellent - highly recommended
When I moved to Northern Virginia, from India, I found myself having to learn very fast how to motor around the area. In this, ADC's Street Map of Northern Virginia was a life-saver for me. I have lost count of how manyhours I have spent poring over its pages to find out how to get to stores,offices and touristy places. The individual page maps are well laid outwith colors used thoughtfully to contrast, without being garish. The text,by and large, is easy on the eyes, barring the smaller street names whichrequire some squinting. Exhaustive index pages make finding streets andlocations a piece of cake. Best of all, the maps keep in mind the differingperspectives of drivers as well as pedestrians. In fact, now that I am wellfamiliar with the area, I often find myself flipping the pages just for thesheer peasure of it or to find something new. I must mention in particularthe layout maps of the local airports, which are a great help for theunwary. Schools need this
This wonderful book reminds us all that there was life before GPS, and people really just had to stumble around before they got their geography right. There just wasn't the tech. Most important, that affected history, and critical political thinking of the times. Can you imagine Thomas Jeffersons guess about what was really the Louisianna Purchase? Just how big was America?

Nice maps, but could use more details....
This is a great collection of selected maps from history -- my favorite is the one of a skinny North America, with the Pacific Ocean right on the other side of the Appalachains.The title is somewhat misleading, since the book is mostly a compilation of the maps that were published well before the Lewis and Clark expedition.The descriptions of each map are brief, and the author often references other maps that aren't included in the book; I find myself really wanting to see one depiction of the world or another that's described but not presented.Overall this is a pretty cool book, though, especially if you've never seen some of these old maps. ... Owing to their expectation that the New World lay in proximity to the East Indies or the Pacific Ocean, the Virginia Company of London in 1607 charged its first settlers to employ a number of men "for two months in the discovery of the river above you, and on the country about you." Captain John Smith was a member of that initial exploration of May 1607, and during the ensuing two years he was primarily responsible for planning and carrying out the discoveries. These explorations were carried out at great risk and hardship; in fact, it was during one of these journeys that Smith was captured by Opechancanough and--according to legend--was narrowly saved from death by the Indian princess, Pocahontas. While Smith and his crews did not find a Northwest Passage, their efforts, as preserved in the folding map which is the focal point of this small book, made invaluable contributions to Virginia geography, ethnology, and cartography.

In John Smith's Map of Virginia, Professor McCary describes the various expeditions made by the intrepid captain and then goes on to discuss the publishing history of the map itself through ten versions between 1612 and 1632. Among the notable features of the folding map, which is the focal point of this small book, are a drawing of the Indian chieftain Powhatan, Captain Smith's arms and motto, important features of the Virginia shore lines, rivers and creeks of Smith's day, hundreds of place names, and the location of 200 Indian villages in Virginia in the early seventeenth century. A good map, but with less detail than other state maps
The map is pretty good, but it does not have the level of detail that I have seen in Delorme guides for other states.

Great Atlas
I've used the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer books from Maine, Michigan, and Virginia for years.These are some of the best map books on the market.I never got lost traveling the back roads and logging trails of Downeast Maine back in the 80's as long as I had my atlas.The amount of detail never ceases to amaze me.I would recommend these books for every state you plan on visiting (especially if you like to travel the back roads as I do).

Hard to Find
I live in Va.and love to trout fish.I met with a game warden and he recommend this book.I looked everwhere and finally found it here.It has been very helpful!

Map review
I will be using this map for searching for civil war battle locations and I think it will do the job very well. It will get lots of use very soon and it will do the job.

Good map for the back roads
This is the best Atlas/Gazetteer I've found around at least for the areas I travel and can vouch for the details.It's a great resource for those times when you need to get off the main roads and see where the back roads take you.This map has a lot of the small details that I was looking for, trail heads, boat ramps, camp grounds, wineries, ferries, waterfalls, etc.The topo lines are pretty easy to read and elevations are well marked for this style of map.It's also pretty easy to cross reference to your GPS unit.

What this map lacks are the details you need for in-town travel, and that includes downtown in the small towns.When the roads get too tight you're gonna need a different map because this one only has one size (1:150k or 1"=2.4miles)I also think they should have included phone/web contact info for their places of interest and a couple of blank pages in the back for notes.(Quick tip: I covered the inside back cover with post-it notes so I can take notes and move them to the page I really need them on.)

Quality of the book is decent and should last long enough. The book is a bit big (15.5"h x 11"w) so don't plan on keeping this one in the glove compartment! ... Read more
