4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy companion to Kiraly's BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Like Joe Eszterhas, the author of SHOWGIRLS and FLASHDANCE, the parents of Karsh Kiraly emigrated to the US from Hungary, where a repressive regime had limited their rights to work and practice free thought.Kiraly shares with Joe Eszterhas some of the same beliefs in the goodness of America, a land where you can make as much money and accure as much cultural capital as you possibly can.And Kiraly has had it all.In CHAMPIONSHIP VOLLEYBALL it is like having a coach over your shoulder at all times, a coach who is going to teach you to block, bump, pass and spike step by step, with careful diagrams and a consistent "you can do it" attitude.

Funny to think that a childhood cartwheel, in which he injured his hand badly by thrusting it into a gopher hole, led to a general lengthening of one arm and corresponding flexibility, which saw him in good stead when he became a teen.Kiraly proves over and over that when life hands you (or your parents) a lemon, you can turn around and make the finest lemonade from it.

One handy chart included in both editions of KK's CV is the list of VOLLEYBALL MILESTONES at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I've been coaching volleyball for 7 years now. This is the best book I've found on skills and strategies. It helped me go from the basics, which is all the farther high school volleyball got when I played, to the advanced game it is today. Easy to read and understand, also.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice. Not very thorough. Offers interesting concepts.
The book covers the basic techniques and tactics. It is mostly a description of the author's view of how to play, and less a complete description of the possibilities, implications, pros and cons of thevarious options.

If you want to know how Karch plays - there's some veryinteresting "inside information". This does not necessarily meanit suits your needs and abilities.

If you value your health, and want tomake real progress, skip the chapter about conditioning and strengthtraining - very unprofessional: For example, his gym leg training is kneeextensions, rather than leg press / squats, and his view of rest is 24hours off the gym (in his level he should retire for ~96 hours).

5-0 out of 5 stars Karch is King!
Volleyball's most decorated player in history [winner of 3 gold medals in the Olympics (2 indoor and 1 outdoor), over 130 career wins on the A.V.P. Tour, the #1 leader in career prize money, etc.], Karch Kiraly has yetanother career ahead of him in writing. Karch teaches you to become abetter volleyball player and the techiniques he uses to be 'numero uno.' Ithink it's well written and he's added more about the beach game.Everything that Karch does is 'golden!'

The best thing about my copy ofKarch's book is I had him sign it for me! So, go out to the next A.V.P.event or if you see him practicing, and ask him to do the same. I can'twait to read some of his other books in the near future!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book About Beach Volleyball!
The Grand-daddy of beach volleyball gives excellent pointers on training, strategy, and skills in this book.He also sheds some light on the state of the AVP pro beach volleyball tour. For the latest on the AVP and inside, behind-the-scene stories, I'd also recommend "Order On The Court" by Tom Burke (2008) as a must-read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lastima de fotografias.

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared for the masses...
Good book, but its only purpose is to appeal to "the masses." Most volleyball books are designed to help everyone; whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Let's face it, if you're trying to make a lot of money off a book...that's the best way to go. However, if you're already a good player, you're not going to benefit much from this book. You're much better off buying Mark Tanner's Smarter Volleyball. It actually talks about the "mental game," rather than the traditional pass, set, hit scenario that you see in most of these books. I've been Karch's biggest fan for most of my life, but to be honest...this book is a waste of time if you're actually wanting to get to a higher level of play. If you're just starting out, buy the book...but if you're looking for more indepth strategies, go with Mark Tanner's book or one of the "lesser known" authors...they're probably not in it for the "big" money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every volleyball player should buy this book!
This book has great photos and a balanced overall approach to beach volleyball. It's got all the basics covered and the stories that are peppered throughout the book make for interesting reading. I would probably have liked to hear more about the players and matches of the past, but I think Karch wanted this to be an instructional book rather than one for entertainment. Still I would have preferred more opinions and insights into the players and strategies. I hope that Karch does a second edition with the new AVP and it's rules.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
This book is great for the beginner. It does not go in depth into strategy, reading hitters, positioning, etc...It does give GREAT tips on imporving your overall game, endurance, shot placement, et al.There is a bit of humor mixed into the fray, which adds the human touch.

When I bought this book i was a beginner. My serves were poor, sets average, kills average, blocks average, and passes were mediocre. After just a few weeks i had a great jump serve, monster kills, and incredible blocks.I love it.

If you are a beginner and want to improve quickly - this is for you.If you have been around a bit - you might find something useful in here but you probably already know this stuff. In depth strategy is lacking. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't wasteyour money
This book is a waste of money.I am an assistant coach for a 5th grade girl's volleyball team.I was hoping to learn something new, get some creative ideas on coaching or building teamwork, or at least come away with one good drill. The book offers none of the above.it's very basic and there is nothing original in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching this age group
I've been around volleyball for many years as a player, coach and ref, so I wasn't looking for a primer on coaching. Although I've had many opportunities to teach fundamentals in a clinic settingI'm getting my first opportunity to coach JO youth for a season. This book was very helpful in getting me to understand that 14 year old girls are going to need a somewhat different approach than adult and high school players and gave me great ideas to help me be successful with them. The assistant coaches were also given the book sothat we all were, quite literally, on the same page during practices. Everyone thinks it is quite valuable and are committed to trying the book's approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Youth Volleyball
Book in excellent condition, took a few weeks to receive.Book is great for those interested in "remembering" how to play volleyball and how to help coach their own children or a team.Good foundation basic information.Helped my daughter with her serves. Would buy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for starting a youth program
I'm a varsity coach, so stepping back and teaching youth wanted to get a refresher course as we set up our youth program. This book is a big help, though for the experienced coach I would assume they know most of it but could use it as a refresher as well.Beginner coaches it would be great, especially for middle school level and below levels. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of Drills
Not a season goes by I don't give this book a twice over to look for some drill I might of missed, great read for new and experienced coaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh no, not another drill book! Well, kind of...
One problem with being a beginning coach is the constant and nagging suspicion that there is one absolute and definitive drill that will magically solve all of your problems for you.Well, no.It takes asystematic design of the practice and a good understanding to coach thesport. But what is a beginning coach to do?

This book is a good sourcefor drills, but Coach Wise presents the drills in a format that encouragespeople to think about the skill first and then go into the drills. This isa drill book but it is a little more than that. Each chapter breaks downthe essntials of the theme of the chapter and THEN goes into the drills. For those desperate for more drills, that does not prove to be enough of aside track to force them to think about what they are teaching, but forthose who do stop and reflect on the technique and skills required toperform the drills, it is a nice touch that proves to be very beneficial. Because of the scattered nature of the book, a name college coachwroteeach of the chapters, this is a compendium of knowledge which is quiteuneven in terms of writing. But is serves its purpose well.

I wouldrecommend Arie Selinger's book and Mike Hebert's book for more advancedcoaches and Bill Neville's book for beginning coaches who actually wants tocoach and not just throw the kids into a maze of drills.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD PLACE TO START.
This book has a lot of good basic drill for the technical game of volleyball. I must say, for the coach that does not have a lot of drill tucked away in his/her head, this book is a definiteasset. It has a lotof good solid drills that would help any coach. I would have like to haveseen some more technical drill, but on the other hand, if your team canhandle all of the drills provided, your doing alright..Well worth themoney.. Thanks ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not for experienced players/coaches
I have played volleyball at the college level. I have also done some coaching as a student assistant in college and an assistant coach for high school. I have been around volleyball for awhile and this book just told me everything I already knew. Some ideas were interesting, but it was just different ways of saying things I already knew. More catchy phrases. Overall I'm looking to return it, it was a waste of money for anyone who knows anything about volleyball. If you haven't played in awhile and are about to start coaching, it would be a good read. However, I graduated college a year ago and it was uninformative to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Little" descibes this book in more than one way.
I would strongly discourage purchasing this book. The actual book itself is approximately 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches and the standard page is full of awkward spacing, double spaced, and large font. Not to mention the book only has 102 pages... I'd be very curious as the overall word count. The book doesn't cover anything new or "insightful".It discusses the fundamentals of volleyball, a volleyball rally, and tosses in a quote here and there.

My background is I've played volleyball through college and have been an assistant at the high school and collegiate level, as well as being a head varsity coach for 4 years at the high school level.

5-0 out of 5 stars must read for beginning coaches
Mr. Betcher's book should be required reading for beginning coaches of all sports. It is well written, concise and has a vast store of information that would help coaches who are just beginning their journey.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not how you play volleyball
As a professional educator and long time volleyball coach and instructor, I am deeply disturbed by the new ruminations being proposed by Poole and his
supporters. From where the dissenters come I don't know, but their divisive machinations are destroying the game and misleading many of the more inexperienced volleyball players into thinking that volleyball is archaic, dated, and ripe for a philosophical overhaul. Well, it isn't. These volleyballistas and their propogana programs need to be curtailed at the base, there is no method. There is no sports instruction system. Volleyball is chaos, it is a microcosm of the unpredictablem forces of the universe that created and will destroy our fragile world. Therein lies the beauty of the game, to play is to reinact this drama of the heavenly bodies and gases and divine indifference. Volleyball is life and death intertwined with immutable inevitabilty, and no hubristic system will ever shelter the volleyball player from his predetermined glory and humiliation.Surprisingly however, Poole gives a very good summary of beach volleyball and lists some very popular spots to get in on a pickup game. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look into the world of Beach Volleyball & it's history
My wife and I are avid Pro Beach volleyball fans, dating back to 2005 after volunteering at our first AVP event in Cincinnati.Since that time we have had the privilege to work at tournaments around the US and have fallen in love with the sport. During a recent tournament back in Cinci, we had the good fortune of meeting the author, Tom Burke. As we flew back home to San Diego, I was totally engrossed in his book "Order on the Court". I'm not sure which part I enjoyed most, it was excellent from start to finish. The sport's history was chronicled back to the very beginning and his in-depth knowledge and analysis was highly illuminating from the early days up to 2008 when the book was released.

As the AVP recently announced it was closing it's doors, I kept hearing the old saying about history repeating itself. This is certainly the case when it comes to the AVP and current state of pro-beach volleyball in the US. Hopefully some of the excellent points made by Tom will be given some serious thought and consideration by the future leaders of sport and it will once again rise to prominance. This book is a great read not only for us rabid fans, but also newbies to the sport interested to learn more and those hopeful it will get back on track and transform into something bigger and better for the players and fans alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Olympic Fan
I am a casual fan of Olympic Beach Volleyball, who has attended two Women's Olympic Finals, and one AVP event. As an avid all around sports fan, I found that Order on the Court provided context and perspective by chronicling the up and down history of the USA's AVP, which is the tour that attempts to market ths sport as a professional event for the US sports fan consumer.Additionally, as Tom Burke juxtaposes the seemingly no-brainer appeal of the sport versus the business of running a tour one is able to understand the issues that cause the tour to struggle year in and year out with sponsors and fans.I learned a great deal about the inner-workings of the AVP from reading this book, and I walked away with a greater respect for the athletes who pursue their athletic dreams via beach volleyball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book! Inside Look at the Life & Times of Pro Beach Volleyball
This book rocks and lives up to all its promises! It certainly is a groundbreaking book for it covers not only the history of the pro beach volleyball sport but also all its present challenges and successes. The book is loaded with drama and comedy as it describes every facet of the sport: the AVP organization, the players, the media and sponsors, and even the fans. A definite must-have for any Sports or Olympics fan. ... Read more
