Rainier, and divides the state into western and eastern sections of quite contrasting physical (and corresponding economic) characteristics. The Cascades block the eastward movement of warm ocean air from the Alaska Current, creating abundant rainfall to the west and semiarid conditions to the east. Thus, the coastal region is one of the wettest areas in the country, averaging in higher elevations as much as 150 in. Have students create reports on where ferries go in Washington and how they are run. Plenty of information is available at this site as well as games and more. The Lighthouses of WA CURRENTLY THIS IS UNAVAILABLE. WE'RE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY. IT'S REALLY TOO BAD BECAUSE THIS IS A GREAT SITE! This is a fantastic site, full of gorgeous pictures and a wealth of historical information about lighthouses in Washington as well as Oregon and California. Have students list all the lighthouses in Washington state, then find and plot them on the map using a Washington state road map and the help of a Washington state gazetteer.
