Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. Water rugby became the most popular of these sports, but somehow the water polo name became attached to it, and it's been attached ever since. As played in England, the object of the game was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. The goaltender stood on the pool deck, ready to dive on any opponent who was about to score. Water polo quickly became a very rough sport, filled with underwater fights away from the ball, and it wasn't unusual for players to pass out for lack of air. In 1877, the sport was tamed in Scotland by the addition of goalposts. The Scots also replaced the original small, hard rubber ball with a soccer ball and adopted rules that prohibited taking the ball under the surface or "tackling" a player unless he had the ball.

Extractions: Established in 1992, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) unites the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States, to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. In addition, the MPSF has also served as an incubator for emerging women's sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Beginning its eleventh year of competition the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation successfully embraces change by allowing contraction and expansion of its intercollegiate athletics portfolio based on the constantly evolving needs or its member institutions. In 2002-2003 academic year, the MPSF will serve 32 member institutions competing at the NCAA Division I level in eight Olympic sports: men's soccer, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's gymnastics and men's volleyball. All MPSF champions compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men's soccer, men's and women's water polo, and men's volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events.

Her mother is Maureen O'Toole, the oldest but most respected member of the first U.S. women's Olympic water polo team. Kelly wasn't even a glimmer of the imagination when Maureen made her debut in 1977 at the international level as a member of the U.S. National Team. At 39, O'Toole has competed in more world championships than any other water polo Olympian and is considered by some to be the greatest women's player ever. The former University of Hawaii standout was named U.S. Water Polo Female Athlete of the Year five times and Women's World Water Polo Player of the Year seven times. She's been around long enough to have retired twice and had a baby. "I wouldn't trade it for the world," she said, referring to her decision to unretire a second time and become an Olympic pioneer.

Extractions: Star-Bulletin WHEN Yugoslavia beat the U.S. in overtime of the 1988 Olympic gold medal water polo match in Seoul, the moment left an indelible memory for Chris Duplanty. It was his first Olympic experience, and he saw things as they could have been. He was a backup goalie in that game and didn't have a hand in the fate of his team in that final game. As assistant coach to a red-hot U.S. women's water polo team heading to Sydney next week, Duplanty believes the gold is once again within reach. And this time, he can have a lot more to say about his team's fate. "Absolutely," said the 34-year-old who two years ago ended a competitive career that spanned Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta. Coming so close to gold in his first Olympics and then failing to earn even a bronze in either of his other two Olympics didn't discourage Duplanty. "One's career is a journey and not a single event," he said in a phone interview from his adidas office in Beaverton, Ore., last week.

Extractions: This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.
