Tennessee's Online Water Quality Assessment The Division of Water Pollution Control is responsible for the administration of the Tennessee Water Quality Control Act of 1977 (T.C.A. 69-3-101). In addition, the Division is responsible for the non-coal surface mining program and illegal coal mining under the Tennessee Coal Surface Mining Law of 1980, as amended. Under the Water Quality Control Act, municipal, industrial and other discharges of wastewater must obtain a permit from the Division. Approximately, 1,700 permits have been issued under the federally delegated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). These permits establish pollution control and monitoring requirements based on protection of designated uses through implementation of water quality standards and other applicable state and federal rules. Additional information about the permits issued by the Division of Water Pollution Control is found in the Environmental Permitting Handbook The Division conducts inspections of facilities, samples discharges for compliance and pursues enforcement as necessary. Appeals of the Division's permitting and enforcement actions are heard by the Tennessee Water Quality Control Board.

Extractions: Water Environment Federation Supports EPA's Water Quality Trading Policy New Document Is Positive Step in Use of Trading to Achieve Water Quality Goals Source: Water Environment Federation ALEXANDRIA, VA The Water Environment Federation (WEF) today welcomed the release of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Water Quality Trading Policy. According to WEF Executive Director, Bill Bertera, "WEF supports many of the provisions in the Policy and believes it is a positive step towards recognizing trading as a tool to achieve water quality improvements. Overall, the Federation strongly supports the concept of trading as an innovative approach to reaching water quality goals." The purpose of the Policy is to encourage states, interstate agencies, and tribes to develop and implement voluntary water quality trading programs that facilitate implementation of TMDLs, reduce the costs of compliance with Clean Water Act regulations, establish incentives for voluntary reductions, and promote watershed-based initiatives. As a follow-up to EPA's "Framework for Watershed-Based Effluent Trading", the Policy draws upon lessons learned from pilot programs and state experiences developing water quality trading programs conducted since the September 1996 document was released.

Rivers are important natural resources particularly for agriculture, fisheries, recreational use, amenity value and as sources of drinking water. Around 13% of drinking water in NI is abstracted from rivers, and many waterways also support ecological habitats and species of national and international importance. Some of these uses can threaten the water quality of the rivers on which they depend, and there may be pollution from other activities in the surrounding catchment.
