ADTSEA - Status Of Future Traffic Safety Education Teacher Needs As many other institutions of higher education have done, west virginia Universitydiscontinued its driver education teacher certification program. http://www.adtsea.iup.edu/adtsea/TheChronicle/fall_98/status_of_future.htm
Extractions: West Virginia University The need to study traffic safety education teacher demographics and future needs of driver education teachers (DET) in WV had its impetus at the 1995 annual conference of the West Virginia Safety and Driver Education Association (WVSDEA). Neither the WVSDEA Board of Directors nor the West Virginia Department of Education had a specific resource directory with names, telephone/fax numbers, and e-mail postal addresses of all the DET in West Virginia (WV). In 1996, the WVSDEA Board of Directors and the Driver Education Section of the WV Department of Education requested that the West Virginia University Community Health Promotion Program develop a resource directory of DET in the state of WV, and determine the need for future DET in WV. Drs. Peter Shaffron and Kenard McPherson, professors in the School of Medicine, Department of Community Medicine, Community Health Promotion Program, performed the work to meet this request. As many other institutions of higher education have done, West Virginia University discontinued its driver education teacher certification program. The WVU driver education teacher certification program was discontinued because of low student enrollment. Enrollment had been minimal from 1985-1995 and was further reduced by the availability of a competing certificate in health education. The program was finally dropped when only one or two students were enrolling per course. In this case, however, the lack of interest in teacher preparation is not an indicator of personnel needs in driver education in the state of West Virginia.
Extractions: Controlled Testing Center The Praxis Series is an Educational Testing Service (ETS) program that provides tests and other services for states to use as part of their teacher certification process. The Praxis Series is also used by colleges and univeristies for entry into teacher education programs. Some professional associations also use these tests. Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessment This is to be taken early in your college career to measure your reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The two types of tests are the paper-based Pre-Professional Skills Test, and the Computer-Based Tests. The paper test is composed of a one hour multiple choice test in Reading and Mathematics, a 30-minute multiple choice Writing test, and a 30-minute essay section. The Computer version has computer-delivered questions that require selecting single or multiple responses, highlighting or reordering information, or providing a constructed response. Each computer test is two hours to allow for completion. Praxis II: Subject Assessment These subject examinations assess your knowledge of the subject you will teach. They also measure your general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge.

GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION IN WEST VIRGINIA: A THIRTY YEAR INVESTMENT and Science Educators in west virginia have nurtured the in the absence of certificationstandards for 3 Canadian Provinces; over 1000 teacher experiences) A http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2001AM/finalprogram/abstract_27328.htm
Extractions: Paper No. 153-0 GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION IN WEST VIRGINIA: A THIRTY YEAR INVESTMENT BEHLING, Robert E. For thirty years, Geologists and Science Educators in West Virginia have nurtured the training of in-service K-12 teachers in the absence of certification standards for Geoscience. In the past fifteen years, the intensity of offerings has dramatically increased through the support of two NSF grants, funding through the Eisenhower Professional Development Program, and most recently, a dedicated budget allocation from the state. We intentionally focused on in-service teachers to ensure immediate transfer to K-12 students. The salient features are: -Coordinated, systematic Field-based experiences (26 states; 3 Canadian Provinces; over 1000 teacher experiences) -A program emphasizing Geology and the Teaching of Science -A four-course telecourse seqence (each are field-based) -A web-based Physical Geology course and associated on-line Virtual Field Trips -Annual participation in the State Science Teachers Meeting through Share-a-thons and field trips -Support of WV teachers in nation-wide workshops and field experiences (where they assist professional geologists) Our design is based on the inclusion of geologists and science educators from more than one university/college, the state survey, and the State Department of Education. Additionally, K-12 teachers who have experienced sequenced training within the structure of the program have become teachers of their peers.
