Lippman is an award-winning journalist who has worked in newspapers, wire services, television, and radio. He began this series while serving as public affairs officer for US Naval Antarctic Support Unit in Christchurch, New Zealand, as Plan of the Week notes for his command. When contacted by the USS Washington Associate Unit , he offered to post the series on their web page. He has continued and expanded the series before and after his discharge from the Navy. He has focused on the USS Washington in this series because of the ship's brilliant combat record and its unique distinction as the only American dreadnought ever to engage and sink an enemy dreadnought. Mr. Lippman also writes articles on World War II history for magazines. One of his articles was recently published in an anthology alongside those of historians Caleb Carr, Stanley Weintraub, and William Manchester. Extractions: and in memory of the ten million. This article is intended to provide some of the basic information about the Ukrainian experience in World War II. Ukraine's role in the war is basically unknown in the world. For example, one American encyclopedia of World War II does not even include an entry on Ukraine. For almost a half century Soviet and Ukrainian archives were closed to historians but today it is possible to do scholarly research in Ukraine and Moscow. This may finally provide a more accurate picture than has been possible with existing sources. Every Ukrainian family suffered losses in the war and many had victims of both Hitler and Stalin. Perhaps it is significant that out of three of my relatives who were victims of the war, two were shot by Stalin's USSR and one was shot by Hitler's Gestapo. Ukraine has thousands of World War II monuments. Very small villages often have a monument listing the names of the World War II dead. Ukrainian losses probably numbered 10 million or half of the entire USSR total and twenty per cent of the entire World War II total of fifty million dead. I would like to thank the University of Toronto for granting me a year of Research Leave (Sabbarical) which provided me with the time to research this article and my forthcoming book. - A.G.

They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language a code that the Japanese never broke. The idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary to the Navajos and one of the few non-Navajos who spoke their language fluently. Johnston, reared on the Navajo reservation, was a World War I veteran who knew of the military's search for a code that would withstand all attempts to decipher it. He also knew that Native American languagesnotably Choctawhad been used in World War I to encode messages. Johnston believed Navajo answered the military requirement for an undecipherable code because Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity. Its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, make it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. One estimate indicates that less than 30 non-Navajos, none of them Japanese, could understand the language at the outbreak of World War II.

Extractions: THE GREAT WAR The Great War ended in 1918. For many years afterwards its causes, and the conduct of all the participants were minutely picked-over, investigated and analysed. Subsequently, numerous books were written on all the War's aspects. Those soldiers who had fought in the trenches returned home and tried to resume normal lives - often by no means easy, especially for those who had been wounded, not only physically but also mentally by the horrors which they had experienced. However, although the momentous events of World War Two and the passage of time gradually dimmed people's memories, there were many who still remembered the events of those awful years. Gradually during the past fifteen years or so there has been, I believe, a re-awakening of interest in the Great War and I should like to use this WWW page to help encourage that trend. I believe that there is still a large amount of unpublished material in existence about the Great War. My intention is to add suitable and appropriate articles sent to me by interested readers to this page. In the First World War, Japan joined the Allied powers, but played only a minor role in fighting German colonial forces in East Asia. At the following Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Japan's proposal of amending a "racial equality clause" to the covenant of the League of Nations was rejected by the United States, Britain and Australia. Racist arrogance and discrimination towards the Japanese had plagued Japanese-Western relations since the forced opening of the country in the 1800s, and were again a major factor for the deterioration of relations in the decades preceeding World War 2. In 1924, for example, the US Congress passed the Exclusion Act that prohibited further immigration from Japan.
