Product Description
One third of the materials covered in this book were purchased by Henry Clay Folger (1857-1930), the American industrialist and eventual Chairman of the New York Company Standard Oil. The remaining two thirds were collected following his death. Together with his wife Emily Jordan Folger (1858-1936), Mr Folger assembled one of the most important private libraries in the United States of America. Their invaluable collection of books and manuscripts was bequeathed to the American people and is housed in the Folger Shakespeare Library, which endures as a monument to their dedication and generosity. Since the library s opening in April 1932, many further materials have been acquired, and today it has the third largest collection of early English prints in the world and the largest collection of Shakespeareana. This book covers all the known music manuscript materials in the library, occupying 168 dedicated entries. These sources range from fragmentary items to ones of considerable importance, and date from the ninth to the twentieth centuries. The great bulk of the music manuscripts have hitherto escaped examination, and many compositions are not recorded in relevant work lists in New Grove II. The music includes stage works, secular and sacred vocal pieces as well as instrumental compositions, some for small ensembles and others for large forces, and many are unique. The manuscript sources include autographs by well-known composers and musicians such as Hector Berlioz, Sir Henry Rowley Bishop, Charles Dibdin, John Liptrot Hatton, Felix Mendelssohn, Roger Quilter, Anton Rubinstein, Clara Schumann, Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan and Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli. Selected sources with music by Henry Purcell have been familiar to scholars for some decades, though the library owns further manuscripts of his music that have previously been overlooked. Other leading British composers represented in the library s hitherto unknown music manuscripts include Thomas Augustine Arne, William Byrd, George Frideric Handel, William Hayes, King Henry VIII and William Lawes. Continental composers feature among the library s sources, such as Gregor Aichinger, Christian Erbach, Charles-François Gounod, Francisco Guerrero, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Clemens non Papa, Gioachino Antonio Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi and Tomás Luis de Victoria, to mention only a handful of figures. A large number of sources and compositions are identified and revealed in the present book for the first time and until recently many of them were uncatalogued. Richard Charteris, Professor in Historical Musicology at the University of Sydney, has published extensively and the book provides invaluable insights into an important component of the library s collection. ... Product Description
It has often been said that love, both sacred and profane, is the only true subject of the lyric poem. Nothing better justifies this claim than the splendid poems in this volume, which range from the writings of ancient China to those of modern-day America and represent, at its most piercing, a universal experience of the human soul.

Includes poems by John Donne, Christina Rossetti, W. H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Robert Graves, e. e. cummings, Dorothy Parker, William Shakespeare, Sappho, Bhartrhari, Anna Akhmatova, and W. B. Yeats, among many others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely love poems
This is a small collection of just exquisite love poems divided into seven sections: Definitions and Persuasions; Love and Poetry; Praising the Loved One: Pleasures and Pain; Fidelity and INconstancy; Abscence, Estrangment, and Parting; and Love Past. Each piece is first rate and contributes to our understanding of love and love poetry. Some of the excellent pieces you'll find inside are: Michael Drayton, Christina Rossetti, Catullus, C.P. Cavafy, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Valery, Bhatrhari, Swinburne, Whitman, Marlowe, Roethke,Thomas Wyatt, Pushkin, Apollinaire, Dorothy Parker, Robert Frost, Arthur Gorges, Byron, Robert Graves, Pierre de Ronsard, Poe, Shakespeare, Neruda,Zenodotos, Andrew Marvell, Donne, Herrick, and selecections from the Song of Solomon. All in all, a beautiful collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very heart warming and sometimes funny
Most of the poems here are beautiful. Some convey the feeling of love gained and others tell the story of love lost or the perils of love.

I really like the poem "Thyrsis and Amaranta" by Jean De La Fontaine hilariously true!! It tells the story of a young man who is in love with a girl who doesn't even know he longs for her. He hints and clues his feelings to her and in the end-- well, if you've ever fallen in love and found out someone has already beaten you to the person you want to be with, you'll instantly get this poem.

There are other poems here that have haunting truths like "They That Have Power" by William Shakespeare. A must read for anyone who knows someone who uses their looks for the disadvantage of others.

This book is a must have for anyone who is interested in poetry. Anyone who is interested in love. And anyone who wants to laugh here and there at a general truth of people who are in love. A real good buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars I did not LOVE this book of LOVE POETRY...
Though this book was filled with a grand assortment of poems, it did not strike my fancy as I thought it would. When I first ran across the book, I was enthusiastic about reading it for the very reason that love poems are appealing to me, as I am a high school girl.

Before I began to scroll through the pages of poems, I had high expectations for this book. I envisioned myself basking in the sun in a hammock, reading endless love poems, all of which were appealing to my romantic nature. However, I found that the majority of these poems were dull and repetitive. They did not remind me of the romantic fantasy that can be found in fairy tales, or the type of romantic poem that lovers write to one another.

This book consisted of a variety of different authors as well, many who were either from a different origin or not well known. Not only were many of their poems repetitive, but also difficult to understand and envision in one's own mind.

While the majority of this book was not appealing to me, there were some poems in this book that I found I enjoyed. An example is, "When You Are Old," by WB Yeats. I enjoyed this poem because I was able to envision myself, years down the road, with the love of my life. I connected with this poem because I consistently imagine myself growing old with someone and loving him unconditionally, just as the poem insinuated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Understanding of Love
But true Love is a durable fire
In the mind ever burning;
Never sick, never old, never dead,
From itself never turning. ~Walter Ralegh

I am naturally drawn to tiny books and this book was no exception. I saw it and instantly fell in love with the red library binding and gold embossing on the fabric cover. This is one of those books you want to carry around with you in your pocket to read on a sunny day while sitting on a park bench.

While most of the poems were new to me, I did find lines to make any poet drown in the pure beauty of words. "In My Sky at Twilight" is a paraphrase of the 30th poem in Raindranath Tagore's The Gardener. The images are lush and mingle emotion with nature. "In Former Days" by Bhartrhari (5th Century) is witty and beautiful in its simplicity. Two lovers are so in love they forget their separateness and then drift back to being "you" and "me." The poem is a mere four lines and yet it provides a intimate look at how lovers feel when in love and when they drift apart. I loved a few lines in "The Palanquin" where a butterfly lands on delicate skin and transfers colors onto the lover's skin.

The poems are divided into 7 sections:

Definitions and Persuasions
Love and Poetry
Praising the Loved One
Pleasures and Pains
Fidelity and Inconstancy
Absence, Estrangement and Parting
Love Past

You may recognize poems by Lord Byron, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman and Dorothy Parker. I was pleasantly surprised by poems by Leconte De Lisle, Pablo Neruda and Dioskorides.

You will find a wide range of love poems. This book contains selections from ancient China to modern America. These poems present the universal experience of the human heart.

~The Rebecca Review

5-0 out of 5 stars "...said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write..."
This is both an excellent and beautiful collection of
love poetry collected from many different poets, male
and female, and from many different eras, and from
many different lands...but the focus is Love...and the
responses to Love...
The poems are grouped in sections. The titles of
the sections are: Definitions and Persuasions; Love
and Poetry; Praising the Loved One; Pleasures and
Pains; Fidelity and Inconstancy; Absence, Estrangement,
and Parting; Love Past.
The "selecter" and editor, Peter Washington, says
the best words about the nature, scope, and purpose
of this book in his "Foreword":"My selection of poems
for the anthology which follows has been guided by
simple principles. Each piece had to be first-rate
in its own way, and each had to contribute something
distinctive to our understanding of love.Where there
is similarity of mood, there is difference of emphasis;
where there is repetition of an idea, there is variety
in music. The juxtaposition of apparently comparable
lyrics brings out their differences, and although the
poems are arranged in broad categories which follow
an obvious sequence, it is the echoes they set up in
one another which enrich them all."
-- Peter Washington.
There are so many fine poems that it is very difficult
to pick a sample--but this is very fine indeed:
* * * * * * * * *
In the moonlit chamber, always she thinks of him
Soft wisps of silken willows, languor in the air
of spring.
Verdant were the grasses beyond the gates;
At their parting, she heard the horses neigh.

Draperies patterned of gold kingfishers;
Within, fragrant candle melts in tears.
Falling petals, the morning plaint of the cuckoo,
Green-gauze windows -- fragments of an illusive
dream.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction!!!
This book was a great historical fiction!!!This book was about Colonel Knox and his journey to FT. Ticonderoga to get guns for general Washington. The story had lots of action and I would definitely recommend it to history lovers!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars History Lesson
I thought the author should have used more dialogue. It reads like a history book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent historical storytelling for young boys
I read and review stories for young boys, because that's what I have. This was a hugely successful book. It's compelling to read aloud.Reit is a natural storyteller who paces the narrative very well with short chapters that appeal to little ones' attention span. His language is pitched just right--a few words had to be explained, but that stretches the young mind. And, it has the additional advantage of being a true story from our nation's origins.Books for youngsters hardly ever get better than this.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History

Product Description

Washington Irving (1783–1859) was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and the first to enjoy international acclaim. In addition to his long public service as a diplomat, Irving was amazingly prolific: His collected works fill forty volumes that encompass essays, history, travel writings, and multi-volume biographies of Columbus and Washington. But it is Irving’s mastery of suspense, characterization, tempo, and irony that transforms his fiction into virtuoso performances, earning him his reputation as the father of the American short story. Charles Neider has gathered all sixty-one of Irving's tales, originally scattered throughout his many collections of nonfiction essays and sketches, into one magnificent volume. Together, they reveal his wide range: besides the expected classics like "Rip Van Winkle," "The Spectre Bridegroom," "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," and "The Devil and Tom Walker," his fiction embraces realistic tales, ghost stories, parodies, legends, fables, and satires. For those familiar only with secondhand retellings of Irving's most famous tales, this collection offers the opportunity to step inside Washington Irving's imagination and partake of its innumerable and timeless pleasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful, wonderful collection of stories!!!
Washington Irving will always be the "Father of American Literature".This collection of stories is an excellent introduction as to why he was such a great writer.Of course, his two most famous tales are here -- "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle".You also have such gems as "The Stout Gentleman" and other various lesser-known tales from his books.Contrary to how many dull, modern critics today pass him off with disdain for not being "deep enough", these stories will prove otherwise. They are thought provoking and engaging.Take for instance, the narrator in "The Stout Gentleman".He is a traveler who becomes fascinated with a loud, demanding, unseen boarder who occupies a room upstairs at the inn where he happens to be staying. The brilliance of the story rests in the narrator's brief, consuming obsession with exactly who and what kind of a person the stout gentleman is.This collection only brings together all of Irving's fiction; however, his sketches, histories, and biographies are also highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and charming
I very much enjoy the writers of earlier times for their leisurely pace. This collection of Mr. Irving's tales did not disappoint me.Living in Louisiana, I found "The Creole Village" of particular interest; I only wish it had been longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Spicy Brew
Some give the sheaf to Charles Brockden Brown but I far prefer the mellow stylings of Washington Irving, the sage of Tarrytown. When I was a boy I was introduced to this splendid body of work by one of my grade school teachers, a collateral relative of Washington Irving, a man who hailed from upstate New York and who carried in his bloodlines some of the authentically spooky platelets of colonial America.During the Napoleonic period the US was not necessarily a pretty place to live in, and Irving's famous story THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN shows us some of the dark underbelly of American life. You really weren't safe out of your own good, and at night travel was even more dangerous.Plus, as anyone who's read the story of Ichabod Crane knows, people were just as prone to jeer and mock the funny-looking as they are today. The story is heartbreaking on two levels, the naturalistic and the symbolic. We all know someone like Ichabod Crane, and many of us find ourselves mirrored in his lonely gaze and terrifying gallop through Hessian country.Irving, like Hawthorne, wrote out many of his tales swearing they were as "his grandfather told him," and thus they are set in a period before his own, a misty place of the past that he knew how to make terrifyingly real and relevant.

My teacher also reminded us that Washington Irving was a very cultured man who believed, like Johnny Appleseed, in planting America with the fruits of other, older lands, so that among his stories you will find some from Europe, re-told to make them apropos and socially relevant for the rawness of a new world.

For horror and fright Washington Irving has few rivals, and the bonus is an added richness as of old apples carpeting a winter meadow, and thus this book, edited by a Twain expert, smells like spicy cider on New Years Eve; lots of good cheer along with your ghosts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Romance in Rural Settings
(This review refers to the PUFFIN Anthology.)

This Puffin anthology presents five of Irving's short stories--tales of fantasy, legend and unrequited love--all set in rural New York and Europe, orignally published in 1820.His literary genius
was quickly evident; the elegant style contributed to his
accolade as "the father of American literature."Despite minimal dialogue the author captivates serious readers with his lush descriptions of scenery, bizarre twists of fate or

imagination, often interspersed with touches of wry humor.

Examining the follies of the human mind, as well as the foibles of the human heart, Irving has chosen the following subjects:
romance, ghosts, ambition, naivety, and pedantry. RIP VAN WINKLE and THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW are set in Dutch New York; THE SPECTRE BRIDEGROOM in the forests of Germany. THE PRIDE OF THE VILLAGE takes place in rural, Hardyesque England, while MOUNTJOY returns readers to Yankee New York state. This anthology provides delectable reading for an armchair by the hearth--especially in chilly, hobgoblin weather--by a premier raconteur
and US diplomat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proof of the talent of an important American author
This wonderful collection proves once and for allthat there is more to Irving than "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The stories contained within this volume are wonderfully told and sparkle with imagination. The pieces from "The Alahambra" were the most impressive. ... Read more

Product Description
Process: Seattle Central Library is an intimate glimpse into the creation of one of the most unique buildings in the world through the camera of architectural photographer, Lara Swimmer. With over 90 spectacular images spanning the entire 32 months of construction, this book provides a tour of Seattle’s Central Library from the ground up. From the vision of principle architect, Rem Koolhaas, to the capabilities of the design and construction teams, these photographs trace the evolution of a landmark civic space.

"Through Swimmer’s lens, the process of construction is an art form in itself. Myriad layers of scaffolding somehow forming a logical sequence, or scenes of workers perched at gravity-defying angles, confirm the visions of grandeur inherent in large civic projects, as well as the human investment required to make them happen."

By dividing the process of construction into its core stages and components, Swimmer’s photography provides a look under the skin of one of Seattle’s most daring public edifices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A small gem
This small book is a gem. Swimmer photographed the process of building the new Seattle Central Library in 2002. The book begins with color renderings of the project before it was built and photographs of the demolition of the existing building. The bulk of it depicts the construction process, interior and exterior, of this public library designed by Rem Koolhaas. Selected quotations from Koolhass and others involved in the project highlight some of the design concepts and challenges. Those quotations are the only text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seatle Library
This book gave a great overview on the design and construction of the 6 yr old Seattle Library. Truly an architectural marvel. Once you have visited the library in person, the book answers many questions that may not have been asked or answered during the docent guided tour. I found that it certainly enhanced my experience after visiting this astounding library.

Ms. Swimmer was THE photographer present from the very beginning of the building process. She ventured where no other photographers could go, or have gone since.
