Product Description
This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Water Pollution held in Bucharest and organized by the University Politehnica of Bucharest and the Wessex Institute of Technology of the UK with the collaboration of the WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment. The Conference, which started in 1991, provides a forum for inter-disciplinary discussion and dissemination of papers related to water quality and environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads or by bad management of water resources. These are issues of growing importance due to the worldwide increased demand for water by communities, industries, and agriculture. The future development of many countries will depend decisively upon how the increasing demand for water will be satisfied, and how the economic and environmental cost for that demand may be met.

Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modelling, data acquisition and measurement, to name but a few. In view of the scarcity of available data, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis. Thus, a continuous exchange of information between scientists from different countries is essential. ... Read more

Product Description
Based on their extensive research into the pollution-related activities of electrical utilities and companies in the pulp and paper industry, Freedman and Jaggi explore the fear that the cost of pollution abatement will damage a company's economic performance. Their findings show that while this may occur in the short run, the negative economic impact disappears over time. Authors then relate their findings to public policy issues and make significant policy recommendations. Environmentalists, corporate management, and people in government will find their findings useful and important, and quite possibly reassuring. ... Read more

Product Description

This volume explores the issues associated with the complex subject of water quality protection in an assessment of the successes and failures of the Clean Water Act over the past twenty years. In addition to examining traditional indicators of water quality, the authors consider how health concerns of the public have been addressed, and present a detailed examination of the ecological health of our waters. Taken together, these measures present a far more complete and balanced picture than raw water quality data alone.

As well as reviewing past effectiveness, the book includes specific recommendations for the reauthorization of the Act, which is to be considered by Congress in 1995. This balanced and insightful account will surely shape the debate among legislative and policy experts and citizen activists at all levels who are concerned with issues of water quality. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good information but an alarmist tone
The Clean Water Act is a landmark of environmental regulation in the United States.Though it is hardly perfect legislation, because of the CWA the Great Lakes, the Potomac River, and many other famous waters are no longer cesspools.

The authors of this book know this but prefer to give us a "Chicken Little" story in which disaster is always coming around the corner. No law, apparently, is good enough to meet the dangers of water pollution that we face.

For example, they present evidence that water pollution from industrial (point) sources has declined while the major increases in pollution come from nonpoint agricultural sources. This seems to me a straightforward argument for being satisfied with the provisions of the CWA while bemoaning the fact that it did not address agricultural sources.Instead, the authors would rather be disappointed in all of the results.

There's a lot of good information in this book, as my example suggests, but the author's attitude toward the successes of the CWA make the tone of the book frustrating. The raw materials of a balanced assessment can be found in this book but the editorialization insists that the sky is falling.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent critical review of progress under CWA.
CWA literature is overwhelming, dense, and confusing. This book is a refreshing change - the progress under the Clean Water Act is presented ina very simple manner.Good for basic technical and legal understanding ofthe subject.EPA and state-level programs and reports are brilliantlycritiqued (no wonder, the book is produced by NRDC!).The text issupported by excellent research of legislative history of the CWA.

OnlyChapter 2 (out of 8 chapters) is a little dull.In Chapter 2, the figurescould have been more illustrative, and the discussion of numbers could havebeen livelier.Overall, the most interesting and understandable book onCWA. ... Read more

Product Description

This book presents multi-disciplinary analyses of the environmental effects and implications in Bangladesh and India of the Ganges water diversion. The analyses demonstrate that the downstream part of the Ganges River basin in Bangladesh, which has a sensitive ecosystem, has become very vulnerable to water diversion and as a result it has caused significant damage to many economic sectors and ecosystems. Areas upstream of the Farakka Barrage in India have become more vulnerable to floods and riverbank erosion. The Kolkata Port has marginally benefited from the water diversion. In the Hooghly River estuary, populations of flora and fauna have thrived. In the downstream areas of Bangladesh costly adaptation measures have been adopted and in many cases damages are irreparable. A regional cooperative framework is presented to foster water resources and environmental development in the Ganges River basin.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Epic Story of the Effects of Water Diversion
I have been quite familiar with the Ganges Water Sharing Problem between India and Bangladesh which has been continuing for the last 55 years. The problem first arose when India commissioned the Farakka Barrage on April 1975 and continued unilateral water diversion from the Ganges River. Interventions on a natural system always creates some adverse environmental effects. However, the case of the Ganges is unique that a large area of sensitive ecosystem of Bangladesh is highly dependent on the freshwater supplies from the Ganges River.

I have read many piecemeal works on this issue in the last three decades. Atleast 4 books were published on this topic but their focus was limited to techno-political dimension of the problem. This anthology is the ever first attempt to quantify hydrological, morphological and ecological blunder caused by the Ganges water diversion. The book is very balanced in a sense that it covered effects of water diversion on both sides of the border. I congratuale the editor of this anthology which is a very well known water expert on South Asia for this candid effort. The chapters are well written, informative, precise and well edited. Graphics are of high quality and the overall production is neat. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, the adequacy of collected water quality dataand the performance of existing monitoring networks have beenseriously evaluated for two basic reasons. First, an efficientinformation system is required to satisfy the needs of water qualitymanagement plans and to aid in the decision-making process. Second, this system has to be realized under the constraints of limitedfinancial resources, sampling and analysis facilities, and manpower.Problems observed in available data and shortcomings of currentnetworks have led researchers to focus more critically on the designprocedures used.
The book is intended to present an up-to-date overview of the currentnetwork design procedures and develop basic guidelines to be followedin both the design and the redesign of water quality monitoringnetworks. The book treats the network design problem in acomprehensive and systematic framework, starting with objectives ofmonitoring and elaborating on various technical design features, e.g.selection of sampling sites, sampling frequencies, variables to bemonitored, and sampling duration. The design procedures presented arethose that the authors have recently applied in a number of nationaland international projects on the design and redesign of water qualitymonitoring networks. Thus, the book covers real case studies where notonly the methods described in the earlier titles are used but also newtechniques are introduced. Where earlier methods are used, they areassessed with respect to their efficiency and applicability to realcase problems.
Audience: Essentially, the framework adopted in the book appliesas well to other hydrometric data collection networks besides those ofwater quality. In this respect, it is expected that planners, designers, scientists, and engineers who are involved in hydrometricnetwork design will benefit from the in-depth approach assumed in thisbook. It will also be of interest to research and data centers, international programs and organizations related to environmentalmonitoring. The book may also be used as a reference text in graduatecourses of water resources and environmental engineering programs. ... Read more

Product Description
As pollution from cars, trucks, and land-based stationary sources has been more tightly controlled over the last 40 years, the contribution of ships and port operations to air pollution in port cities has become more important. In the same period, foreign trade has grown dramatically; thus, pollution from shipping and port operations would be growing as a percentage of total emissions, even if the emissions were regulated to the same degree as other sectors. This book provides information regarding pollution from ships and port facilities and discusses some of the measures being implemented and considered by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access. ... From the supplier: Polluted waters are destroying popular beaches, as the tide washes in garbage, raw sewage, oil, fecal bacteria and toxic algal blooms. Many sewage systems are run down, which is causing overflow and spillage into waters after heavy rains. Many municipal, state and federal standards for the quality of water are unenforced, which allows for the problems to continue.

Product Description
In 1996, after more than a decade of researching the effects of over-population and the consequent pollution of the greater metropolitan New York City area, Carl Sindermann published his observations and conclusions in Ocean Pollution: Effects on Living Resources and Humans, a mostly technical document that emphasized the pathological effects of coastal pollution. The stressed species inhabiting the coastal waters of New York Bight had been the subject of several laboratory programs, which when integrated with ongoing pollution studies, provided a superb opportunity to assess the effects of human impact upon a fragile coastal system.

Coastal Pollution: Effects on Living Resources and Humans is a highly lucid expansion and revision of that earlier book that preserves some of the technical aspects and enlightening vignettes recorded in the original. Organized into three distinct sections this work-
I. Recounts eight specific horror stories based mostly on the consequences of coastal pollution
II. Surveys the effects of coastal pollution on resource species such as fish and shellfish and marine mammals
III. Examines the effects of coastal pollution on humans

Sindermann ends the work by drawing conclusions and offering predictions for the future. Reflecting back over his notable career and beyond, the author ventures back as far as the 1950s in an effort to make readers appreciate the long historical record that is often forgotten due to our focus on the here ad now.

"Science practiced without occasional genuflection to its history is too flat and featureless - intense but without depth - stimulating but lacking an important link with the past. We can do better."

Intending to express insight that goes beyond the discussion of any one area, the author uses his experiences at the Sandy Hook laboratory as a lens to provide us with a poignant and well-documented understanding of the human impact on the inshore marine environment and its inhabitants, worldwide. ... Product Description
Concentrations (clarkes) of chemical elements in different components of the environment are indicative of the redistribution of the elements between the main spheres of the planet. Regional clarkes of chemical elements attest to the geochemical diversity of these spheres. The global ecological role of soil is that it, being a product of interaction between biotic and abiotic components of the environment, exerts its own considerable influence on them. This general statement acquires special significance under conditions of constantly growing technogenic impacts on the environment, including the hazardous chemical pollution. Furthermore, the real interaction between chemical elements in all the components of the biosphere is executed by various groups of chemical compounds specific for each of the components of the environment. In this context, the compounds of chemical elements in soils attract special attention. ... Read more
