Product Description
FROM THE INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, industrial water pollution control has undergone vast changes. Public Law 92-500 passed in 1972 primarily targeted conventional pollutants such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and suspended solids and as a result wastewater treatment plants were designed to meet these objectives. In recent years volatile organics, priority pollutants, aquatic toxicity and some heavy metals have received attention in specific industrial effluents. In some cases nitrogen and phosphorus will have specific effluent limitations. If the wastewater contains volatile organics such as benzene or toluene, these organics must be removed prior to biological treatment or basins must be covered with off-gas treatment. The technology choice to meet these objectives in a cost-effective manner will be site specific. In 1976 EPA established effluent limitations for priority pollutants in the organic chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibre industries (OCPSF). These are pollutant specific guidelines expressed as an effluent concentration. Depending on the specific chemical involved, the biological treatment process or a source treatment technology may provide the most economical solution. Aquatic toxicity poses a major problem in industrial water pollution control. Because it is frequently non-specific it is difficult to identify appropriate cost effective technologies. As a general rule, biological treatment should be the first option with more costly physical chemical technologies employed only in cases where the toxicity-causing chemicals are non-biodegradable. ... Product Description
This new edition of a classic text has now been extensively updated to include the latest developments in risk analysis and water quality assessment and management. It takes into account the role of ecological water quality in integrated regional and transboundary water resources management, according to the latest UNESCO programmes and the new EU-Water Framework Directive.
This practice-oriented textbook is a unique tool for identifying and evaluating local and regional environmental risks from pollution hazards in groundwater, river water and coastal seawaters. The book explains different risk-based probabilistic methodologies and fuzzy logic-based approaches and includes various mathematical models for water quality simulation and theories, such as the decision analysis, the utility theory and the integrated risk-based multi-criteria assessment and management, in order to thoroughly evaluate several case studies from the real world.
Questions testing the reader?s understanding are given at the end of each chapter, and a useful appendix provides hints for answering them as well the solutions themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Academic's and practisioner's viewpoint
This book provides a complete treatment of uncertainty and risk as they relate to water pollution issues. Two different approaches are described: a stochastic or probabilistic (like the Monte Carlo simulation) and the fuzzyset theory. The latter is a new approach for the treatment of uncertainty, and provides a rigorous alternative where the former cannot be applied. The author starts with an introduction (Chapter 1) on the role ofengineering risk assessment in water pollution problems, followed byenvironmental risk assessment and management and an objective statement ofthe book. Then the book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 2 deals withthe risk identification problem using probabilistic and fuzzy-basedanalyses. The risk identification is followed by risk quantification inchapter 3, using a supply-demand formulation based on the moment methodsand Monte Carlo simulation. The temporal variability of reliability is alsodiscussedwith recommended models. Fuzzy regression analysis is also usedto quantify risk. System analysis is also introduced for components inparallel and in series. Chapters 4 and 5 provide information on riskassessment and risk management as they apply to water quality. Risk-baseddecision analysis is utilizedto performrisk management. The concepts ofconsequences, utility theoryand multiobjective decisionanalysisarealso covered. These chapters demonstrate the introduced concepts usingexample problems in coastal water pollution, river water quality andground water contamination. The last chapter includes three case studiesthat deal with the coastal pollution of a gulf in Greece, the water qualityof a river located in the same area, and the ground water pollution of anaquifer in Australia. The book also includes a list of references and asubject index. In summary, this book provides a completetreatment ofuncertainty and risk analysis as it applies to water pollution.Conequently, due to its originality and completeness, the book can be avaluable tool to engineers, students, educators, and consultants in variousareas related to water quality and water pollution. ... Product Description

When discussing the issue of contamination of the aquatic environment, water pollution is still the major aspect that has been regulated and extensively studied, but poor attention has been devoted to sediments. Sediments have been described as the sink or storage place and a source for contaminants entering river systems through various pathways. But bottom sediments have various functions in the environment, such as providing habitat for many aquatic organisms, and are an important component of aquatic ecosystems.

This volume of the Handbook deals with various aspects of sediment contamination such as the fate and behavior of persistent organic pollutants, the application of sediment toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) protocols, and the various ways to degrade toxic pollutants from sediments. Overall the book provides readers with the fundamental knowledge needed to better understand the complex issue of contaminated sediments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much information but understandable to the lay person.
Very good primer on issues related to water pollution and drinking water. After giving a very quickstudy of issues relating to water chemistry and microbiology, describes the causes of water pollution. He devotes anentire chapter to the issue of drinking water, but also discusses issuesrelating to pollution in lakes streams, and the ocean. He describes inunderstandable form, the effects on aquatic life of water pollution.Hisglossary is also most useful when you may have forgotten a term previouslydiscussed in the book.I am not an expert and possibly a more scientificperson would find fault with the book.Ditto-heads may consider him anenvironmental wacko, because of his recommendations for preventing waterpollution. For a basic understnding of the issues of water pollution, Ithink it is an outstanding book. ... Read more

Product Description
The main challenge to international environmental law is to strike an adequate balance between the discretion of states to undertake economically attractive activities and the need for constraint in order to protect the environment. Based on one particularly elaborate environmental regime (the regime for transboundary water pollution as it applies to the Netherlands) this book examines how international law has sought to replace discretion by constraint, and what limitations have been encountered with that endeavour.

The study provides a comprehensive assessment of the main assets and lacunae of the regime for transboundary water pollution. It discusses the applicable substantive and procedural rules (including new developments, such as the precautionary principle, the obligation to conduct environmental impact assessments); the combined use of legal rules (such as the 1992 Convention on the Protection of Transboundary Watercourses and the 1992 Paris Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic) and non-legal rules (such as the Rhine Act Programme), and the application of procedures to control the implementation of states' obligations.

Since many of the issues are not exclusively relevant to transboundary water pollution, the main conclusions of this study may prove directly applicable to other international environmental regimes. ... Read more

Excerpt: Water pollution in New Zealand is becoming an increasing concern for environmentalists and for regulatory bodies. Siltation due to land clearance has affected lakes, rivers, caves and bays in New Zealand. There are more than 800 water quality monitoring sites around New Zealand that are regularly sampled. Agriculture is the dominant use of land in New Zealand and has had the most widespread impact on water quality. In recent years water pollution has increased since stocking rates are becoming higher and there is an increasing use of fertilizers. Horticulture, arable farming and plantation forestry have a lesser impact than dairy farming. In 2001 Fish and Game New Zealand started the high profile "dirty dairying" campaign to highlight the effect of pollution from dairy farming intensification on the ecological health of freshwater environments. As a reaction to this campaign Fonterra, the largest dairy company in New Zealand, along with a number of government agencies instigated the Dairying and Clean Streams Accord to address water pollution due to dairy farming. The aim of the Accord is to limit the access of stock to waterways. Fonterra exports the majority of its produce and encouraging farmers to limit environmental impacts is a method of getting environmentally aware consumers to purchase their products. In a report released in October 2008 Fish and Game and Forest and Bird were highly critical of the Accord. Urban runoff is polluted with detergents, waste oil, litter a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24830798 ... Read more

Bus trip from Storrs, CT to upstate New York, modified by a fictitious drug similar in action to LSD, turns into a search for meaning for a 25 year old author/ artist/ college student. Mentored by an often sadistic shaman/teacher the M.C. is led through his own past, present and future in a barrage of sometimes euphoric, often terrifying confrontations with his own mind. If you have read any beat poet literature; you couldn't be hurt be checking it out (it's really more of an anti-beat response to beat poetry, but if you like Kerouac and Ginsberg and Bukowski - this novel is right up your alley.) L.S.D.= Logan's StoryTelling Drug. 25 = the approach of a "nothing" year in the M.C.'s life where he is, as many folks are, beset by an intense awareness of mortality (No new freedoms, half-way to 30, "Where do I go next?"-at 25 years old.) *** Talks with God from an Agnostic, return to the soft, warm darkness of the womb, sex, dealing with having been sexually abused, college life, spiritual growth, spiritual death,... It's a coming of age novel. It's a love story. It is a political commentary on what growing up in middle to lower class America does to a person. It is about struggling. It is about failing. It is about succeeding. It is a snap-shot of American life, wart and all. ... Read more
